TUAW review and giveaway: My Writing Nook for iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Jul 2010 17:30:00 UTC +00:00
If there's anything that I love writing about, it's writing apps. I'm constantly looking for new and useful apps that will let me write on any device at any time, and keep all of the devices nicely in sync. For that reason, when I heard about My Writing Nook for iPad (US$4.99) and the iPhone / iPod touch version called simply My Writing Nook ($2.99), I immediately contacted developer PT Software Solutions to give it a try. What I found is an uncomplicated app that is perfect for writing manuscripts from any device. Like many of the apps that I wrote about last year in preparation for NaNoWriMo, My Writing Nook is best for producing large quantities of text without worrying about formatting. The interface is spare, and for situations where you're just concerned about committing as many words as possible to virtual paper, that's what many writers want. In the Read More

Solid iPad app
Buddahgrrl 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Well done iPad app. I love the simplicity of this writing program. And the iPad app is solid and just as good if not better than the iPhone app.
Easy, convenient, streamlined and very useful.
Mr. Opinionated 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
The developer's responsive upgrades keep enhancing this already elegant app. I've been using My Writing Nook on the iPhone and it syncs beautifully with the equally simple and clean free website (mywritingnook.com). Besides writing I sometimes copy text onto the website and it shows up on the iPhone, and vice versa. Hassle free. Such a nice writing experience on the iPad! This will keep the creative juices flowing! . . . "Dark, like the inside of a closet with the lights off."
Yay word count!
Malaclyps 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Could do with a little more polish, but if you need an iPad writing environment with word count, this gets the job done!
An Indispensable App!
Finally Learning Spanish 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Soon after I got my iPad, I picked up this wonderful app. I love, love, love the live word count feature. For someone who lives by word count on a daily basis, it's just what I needed. With My Writing Nook synched to a wireless keyboard, I find myself enjoying this combination more than using my laptop-- the sync feature backs up my files easily, without dragging icons to a folder several times a day. Simple things, but timesavers, nonetheless. Keep up the great work!
Barebones writing app, but just what I needed to get the writing out!
Johnlox 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I love this app for iPad! it's not fancy nor does it have a lot of bells and whistles, yet that's just what I'd been looking for - a clutterless app that allows me to get the writing out Whenever the inspiration comes. Just hope Apple adds a tab key to the keyboard soon!
Exactly what it should be
Lowfuel 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
A writing app that let's you focus on writing. As a bonus, it syncs with the companion website.
Perfect writing app for the iPad
Wayne in NJ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
I have the iPhone version of this app and love it. I was really hoping for an iPad version, and this exceeded my expectations. The app is just as easy to use as the iPhone one, but with more features. And it's FAST! Really fast! Plus, it works with my new Bluetooth keyboard. I'm in writer heaven here.
Stay Away
TK Dennis 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
As of April 20th, this App has much to be desired. I will be asking for a refund indeed. Lost an hour worth the work. This app has very few features, and quite a few noticeable bugs. This might make great freeware but it's not worth 5 dollars.
Convenient, streamlined and very useful writing app
Mr. Opinionated 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
The developer's responsive upgrades keep enhancing this already elegant app. I'd been using My Writing Nook on the iPhone and it syncs automatically with the equally simple and clean free website (mywritingnook.com). In addition to using it for writing I sometimes copy text onto the website and it shows up on the iPhone, and vice versa. Hassle free. Handy automatic word count and autosave. Looks and feels sweet on the iPad. Well done.
Terrible
hubie.com 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
This is worth nothing more than free. Not even close to being ready for prime time. Document titles are limited to a certain number of letters. Documents can't be ordered the way you want - developer says you have to do it alphabetical. Come on. Synching brings stuff back from the Google site to the iPad that you've deleted from the iPad. Writing a book on this? You should be able to hit a button to add a chapter, add a title, add anything. No you can only add another document. But make sure you title it the right way!
Nice with caveats
Steven Gould 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
As far as I'm concerned, this program would be perfect with the addition of basic formatting (I want the ability to underline. Don't really need to bold or italicize but some might.) Also, in landscape mode, this really needs to have the option to disappear the sidebar so there is nothing but large text on the screen. That's it. As a basic fiction writing tool its just about perfect, getting out of the way and syncing with the "cloud" so I don't have to worry about integrating my work into scrivener on my desktop.

Good for plain old writing
Joebok 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Good for writing on the go. With the companion website you have access to your stuff wherever you have net access. You can work disconnected on your iPad and sync it up later when you have a connection. Note: this app only supports plain text. It is for writing, not formatting, text. I can see the appeal of this approach, however I think it would be a great feature to allow underline, bold, and italics.
Hopefully it will improve
dwortz 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
As it stands, the only real reason I'll be using this app is because it gives me the ability to lock my files. Other than that it offers me no real features. One of the biggest let downs is that you can't export your files in any type of desktop compatible format. Emailing each chapter one at a time to myself is not a good way to get my book onto my Mac. It claims to have Google docs support and asks for your username and password to connect, but It won't sync. It just says there is no connection and/or my information is wrong... Neither of which is true. It has a few font choices, which is nice, but for drafts, I don't care much about that. It has a built in dictionary and thesaurus which I will find handy I'm sure, and a real time word counter that I honestly have not worried about since I was in grade school and had to write essays. To me this isn't worth 5 bucks, and if I could have sampled it first, I wouldn't have purchased it. What I would really love to see is a good novel writing application. I would easily pay 20 bucks for an app that allows me to take notes, create a list of characters, fill in background information on them and an easy way to really organize my documents. I am really hoping that Mariner Software tackles this and makes a great app. It is desperately needed on the iPad app store. Unfortunately this is not an app that I can recommend as is. It needs more professional features, and it needs to have the features it does have, fixed! Hopefully the developer is at least still developing this app and has plans to improve upon it. If your looking for the ability to lock your files, then this is it. But if your looking for something that gives you a decent writing experience, stick to Pages by Apple for now. It has a million more bells and whistles, has great design and an easy to use interface. Add to that the ability to export files in a variety of formats you can use on your desktop machine and it's a no brainer.
I love this app!
Toddmann 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
I've never reviewed an app before, but I couldn't pass up the chance to tell everyone about how wonderful this writing tool is. I love to write, and with this app, I have the ability to whip out my writing at a moments notice...when ever the muse hits me. I hope all you eager writers out there give this app a chance. It was a little tricky learning how to get back and forth from the web page to the app at first, but now it's as simple as can be. Very cool application, and I hope you guys continue to do upgrades.
Me encanta!!!
MGGR 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Worth the $$
CelestialWolf 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
Don't listen to diplomattm. I've been using this app on my iPad and iPhone and I've never had any problems on either. Also, for the record, Google Docs only allows editing for spreadsheets- NOT word docs on the iPhone or iPad. If you're looking for a notebook where you can sync across multiple devices AND have word count, this is the app for you. I'm quite happy with this product. As for improvements, I'd have to agree with a previous review. Hiding the side bar in landscape would be great as well as more fonts to choose from. It's well worth the money.
Fantastic!
Dan (WA) 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
Highly recommend. Very tight and clean.
Can I get back my 10 bucks for Pages?
DaChipsta 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
I am a full-time, professional freelance writer. I need two things to do my job, a word count and a thesaurus. The Pages app has precisely zero of these. My Writing Nook has both and costs half as much. For plain text composition, there's nothing better in the App Store. Online syncing is nice, and email output is all I need (and nothing worse than Pages). The app has a few niggling little software bugs, which I'm sure the developer is on top of. Otherwise and regardless, highly recommended.
Incredible App!
T.Matthews 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
This is the first app I've found that fully supports external keyboards - something Docs To Go lacks - and the ability to access the documents easily on other computers without having to import/export all the time. The only added feature I'd like to see would be the ability to sync the txt files with Google Docs since they are already on Google's servers and use our Google ID.
Not perfect, but BEST for WRITERS, so far
KCS2010 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
PROS Clean, attractive interface and writing space Syncs with google account Can email self Password protection Word count Dictionary and thesaurus CONS Can't treat title differently from body copy font change affects all docs, not just current doc WISH LIST subfolders in list of docs (no writing app has this, but if you write a lot, it's important) desktop/online version (the others don't have this either, but I like this app enough to wish it did :-)
great app
Blt50203 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
I have been using this app on my iPhone for awhile and now that it's come to the iPad I couldn't be happier. The developer is great about communication and taking users wants into future upgrades. I especially like the sidebar, which allows me to quickly switch to different things I am working on. If I had one request it would be to hide the sidebar when in landscape mode to maximize screen space. Of all my writing apps, including pages, this is the one I find myself using.
Janky, at best.
katzilla349 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
Am I missing search functionality somewhere? Title and Global Content and Document Content search capabilities seem to be missing, so unless I missed it somewhere, this is a big deal breaker for me. Is it just me or are the doc titles exceptionally limited?
Great for writers
Toosad 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.7
I use this regularly to write my monthly column. Word count and synchronization are great features. Maybe integration with dropbox?
Useful Features
curiousyellow 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
I bought this slightly pricy app because of three features: It expands my TextExpander macros (abbreviations), I could type in text in my Bluetooth keyboard, and I could create text in a large serif font, making it easier to read, proofread, and edit, even in poor visibility conditions without my eyeglasses. When I finish a note, I just copy it and paste it into Simplenote for uploading to the cloud and my laptop and other devices My Writing Nook also makes its own backup to the cloud, using a Google interface. At this time I know of no other iPad app that does all three.
Procrastinator
Tiffany VH 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
This is a great little app with a large punch. My only complaint is the dictionary and thesaurus feature. Lame! I am a poet and rely on these features. Having the ability to keep all of my work synced has changed my rate of production. I find it convenient to work on multiple pieces at once. The color coding system allows me to track progress on multiple poems; giving me a visual reference of where I am in my editing processes. I also love having my most current version anywhere. In the past I wrote by hand in my journals. This app gave me everything I needed to stop using my journals. Who knew it was possible?
DISCRIPTION FOR THIS APPLICATION: GROSSLY MISLEADING!!!
savagecoffee 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.5
This was the only app that specifically stated it had a Word Count function. That's about the only thing that made this worth spending money on at all, but not more than $0.99!!! This is the only application that I've bought so far that I've felt ripped off by. Titles have a limit on number of characters you can use - this makes the visual for the app discription seem GROSSLY MISLEADING!!! You CAN'T HAVE SEPARATE FILES FOR SEPARATE STORIES in progress - you HAVE TO DO CREATIVE ABREVIATIONS to get chapters to different stories to line up on the Documents list, because titles auto arrange alphabetically after they're saved. Again: VISUAL IN APP DESCRIPTION GROSSLY MISLEADING!!!
Excellent text editor
JohnnyTheQ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
This is a wonderful text editor for the iPad that syncs seamlessly to a powerful and convenient web app. The developer is very responsive and helpful. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a handy tool for your note-taking and novel scribbling!
What I was looking for!
Casey Freeland 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
This app is going to get a lot of use on my iPad. I have several writing and text programs and this is what I was looking for. Project driven, color-coded entries, easy to use and a companion online program when my iPad is not around. It's perfect. Thank you.
Great App. . . .
Mrowley 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
Great app for basic writing across multiple devices. I love that your text documents are essentially backed up online to access anywhere. The idea is great: an uncluttered writing app where you can always keep documents up to date. I just have a couple of suggestions. For anything other than note-taking, even the simplest text editor needs an indent function, so I hope to see some way for tabbing in future updates. Allowing different fonts for individual documents would be nice, but not essential. However, basic styles like bold, italics and underline would be extremely useful, as well. Overall, I think this app would be perfect if it included the barebones basics in Apple's Textedit-- plus the fantastic features already included, like word count.
Whoot! Do like!
Eryal 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.6
I really enjoy this app, it has a wonderful way to sort different documents that are all pertaining to the same story. One of the few apps I have I was happy to pay the fee for. My only problem so far is I can't get it to sync up. I even got a new google account and still have not been able to sync. But other than that it's great! I enjoy the options available and have been having a great time.
