5 Stellar Ways to Explore Space Using Social Media
Calendar16 Mon, 22 Mar 2010 16:33:36 UTC +00:00
Space — the final frontier, and all that jazz. As the folk over at the Hubble Telescope website say, “Your body may be trapped at your desk, but your imagination can roam the far reaches of the universe, thanks to the wonders of the web.” Here’s a spaced-out selection of sites and social media resources that will have you reading the thoughts of astronauts, taking a virtual tour of the International Space Station, and viewing galaxies far, far away. Get your space geek fix below, and, as always, please do share any resources we’ve overlooked in the comments box. There’s a ton of space agencies around the globe, together boasting an estimated $44 billion annual budget to find out more about space. While capabilities vary dramatically from country to country (not all have basic launch capability, let alone manned spaceflight, and the only two with lunar landing capability are NASA and Read More
EFF: Apple Owns Your Apps (and Maybe Your Soul?)
Calendar16 Tue, 09 Mar 2010 14:12:40 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/09/2010 at 6:12am | by J.R. Bookwalter While most developers won’t hesitate for a moment to sign Apple’s iPhone Developer Program License Agreement in blood to have even a piece of the App Store action, a new legal analysis reveals some disturbing reasons as to why you might want to think twice. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has gotten their hands on a copy of Apple’s iPhone Developer Program License Agreement and have distilled a few choice nuggets which should give most developers pause before they drink the Kool-Aid, as it were. Thanks to the existence of the NASA iPhone app, the EFF was able to use the Freedom of Information Act to ask the space agency for a copy of the license agreement dated March 17, 2009, and here’s some of what they discovered. Section 10.4 of the agreement “prohibits developers, including government agencies such as NASA, from making any Read More

Keep your eyes on the Sun safely with free 3D Sun app
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:00:00 UTC +00:00
I really love to find cool, free apps, and I have a good one for you. 3D Sun, developed in collaboration with NASA scientists, will alert you to solar flares and storms which can disrupt communications on earth and trigger spectacular northern lights. Activating the push feature provides instant notification of major solar activity.. Clicking on the app will give you detailed information, as well as a current picture of the surface of the sun provided by the NASA 'Stereo' satellites. You can rotate the view of the sun with your fingers, and pinch in and out to zoom. The 2 satellites don't have a 360 degree view, so there will be a dark sliver where the cameras can't see. Using this app is a lot safer than trying to see these phenomena with the naked eye or even using some of the not-so-safe solar filters that are around. In addition Read More

Space junkies with an iPhone or iPod touch, listen up: NASA released an app compiling pretty much everything going on in the space program to give you access to images, mission info, countdown clocks, and more, all in one place. This free app is packed with continually-updated information about NASA's missions, launch calendars, and a boatload of other info related to its space exploration programs. You can follow the agency's Twitter feeds, catch up on blog posts from various departments, watch videos, and even read up on historical moments of the space program. The NASA App provides up-to-the-minute information on exactly where in orbit the International Space Station (ISS) is, and also the Space Shuttle when it's on a mission. If you allow the app access to your location, it will even tell you when the ISS and Shuttle will pass by overhead. Speaking of the Shuttle, this is a particularly Read More

Each month, the best new iPhone apps—and some older ones—are considered for admission into Gizmodo's Essential iPhone Apps Directory. Who will join? Who will live? Who will die? Layar: There's the obvious reason to be excited about this: Layar, the first camera-based AR app to really blow us (or anyone) away, has quietly slipped into the App Store. As with the Android version, the app overlays all kinds of information onto a live view of the world around you. And the less obvious, but ultimately more important one: Layar layers, which let you install user-generated overlays of all different kinds of information, like this one, which tracks government bailout spending. Free. Tweetie 2: From Matt's review: It's the most polished Twitter app yet, oozing slickness with every swipe. Yet, it's exploding with new features, and still really fast. It manages to cram in every possible feature you could possibly want in Read More
Weekly App Store Picks: October 31, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 31 Oct 2009 15:00:57 UTC +00:00
As another week passes, the seams of Apple’s App Store have been stretched even further with a deluge of new releases. Digging through the latest apps, I’ve selected four fresh picks for you to check out. It’s Halloween and so my top pick for this week is Alive 4-ever, a top-down zombie shooter with plenty of guts and gore to go around. I’ve also been checking out TowerMadness Zero, NASA and WordPress 2. As it’s Halloween, I thought that at least one of my top picks this week should be themed for the occasion. Despite the clumsy sounding name, Alive 4-Ever is a surprisingly polished top-down shooter. The plot is simple and disgustingly cliché: for whatever reason, a zombie apocalypse happens, you take to the streets to rescue other survivors. The game takes its inspiration from some of the best zombie titles out there, including Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead. Read More

NASA app released to the App Store
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Oct 2009 19:42:56 UTC +00:00
NASA, the US spec agency dedicated to the exploration of space, has announced the release of an iPhone application available for free download right now. The app enables people to be updated to the very latest in NASA happenings, including real-time updates of orbit locations of NASA spacecraft in real-time (sounds like something a spy could definitely use to his advantage, now that we think about it). More from the listing for the app: — The NASA software makes extensive use of built-in iPhone features and usability to offer compelling yet concise information in a clear and intuitive way. Receive and share dynamic NASA mission updates, out-of-this-world images, and intriguing video links. Follow the path and progress of space exploration in real time while tracking the global orbits of your favorite spacecraft, all in the palm of your hand. — We’re fascinated by the new usage of the iPhone for information Read More
iPhone apps may not be rocket science to create “ but we do have an official NASA iPhone app now, to keep track of those folks building and flying in rockets. I grew up in an era when every new NASA mission was a BIG deal “ all over the TV, talked about tons at school, loads of us growing up dreaming of being the next Neil Armstrong, and all that jazz.  We bought astronaut action figures and built DIY rocket ships “ and oh boy would we have gone for this iPhone app! Here ‘s a little slice of the app ‘s intro on its App Store page: By downloading this first-ever NASA application for the iPhone, you will enjoy fast, direct access to accurate, up-to-date space mission content from a wide range of U.S. Space Agency sources And here are some of its main features: NASA Missions Mission orbit Read More

NASA on the iPhone: [N]ice [A]pp, [S]pace [A]ce!
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Oct 2009 12:52:10 UTC +00:00
By – Maybe I'm just getting old, but no one seems to want to grow up and become an astronaut anymore.  At least not like in the 60's, when the Space Race was in full swing and the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo crews were heroes, instead of the glorified truck drivers of the Space Shuttle program. Still, that hasn't stopped NASA from entering the modern age with their very first iPhone app.  The free program lets you keep tabs on space missions current (where's the International Space Station now?) and future (the next-generation of Moon and Mars explorations), plus tons of photos, videos, and status updates via Twitter. There are a lot of space geeks out there. You know the type; they wake up in the early hours of the morning to watch launch coverage or live feeds from the International Space Station, they follow NASA astronauts on Twitter, and they're married to people in the space biz. Oh, wait -- that's me! Yeah, I'm a bona-fide space geek and proud of it, so I was thrilled to hear that the official NASA iPhone app [iTunes Link] is now available free of charge. The app was created by the New Media Team at NASA Ames Research Center, and for their first app it's surprisingly robust, bug-free and full of features. The front screen of the app provides a window into current and future NASA missions. Along the bottom of the display are buttons for missions, images, videos, and updates. The updates are fairly current -- there were 11 posts Read More

Rowland Rose 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app has just about everything you could want related to NASA. Feeds organized by mission, videos, news, AIOD and NASA IOD. Great job NASA!
Great app for a lunch junkie!!!

Amazing
drhundertwasser 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Was prepared for low expectations from a version 1 app, but this is fantastic. Fast! Well organized, elegant, fun options (save pictures to your iphone camera roll!). Well done NASA.
Not bad, but missing ground viewing opportunities and other features
The Original Spoo 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Would be a perfect app if they used GPS to know your location and showed you when a satellite/vehicle was viewable from your location. Other 3rd party apps have this. Also could have augmented reality feature where if I point my iPhone to a passing satellite, it projects its name, info, etc. Kind of like urban spoon or yelp! does with restaurants. Some buttons at the top are too close together. But a nice first attempt at an app from NASA.
Looks great!
pbtran 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Fabulous images & vids and love the filtering feature. It works on both iPhone & iPod Touch 3.x and the keyword search is awesome!!!
Good job NASA!
b0r3dguy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app! Keep up the good work....our tax dollars at work!
not bad for a first outing
d-wa 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Content and layout are nice, default mission selection/filter is a little unusually focused (Odyssey??? Express???). Mission and icon/graphic "hooks" could be improved - the mission names and satellite images all blur together to those who don't know NASA's programs, subcaptions telling what the missions *achieve* would help. Hoping that the framework is used eventually to go beyond just a "push more content out to people" tool, and add features that engage the public two-way. User surveys, quizzes (ala the NASA web site), live overpass spotting or push notification (mentioned by others here), etc are options. Also could bring in the earth-focused angle by crowdsourcing - have folks submit (tagged with GPS) live reports of weather, severe weather, disasters, fires, even climate (first bloom of plant types, etc). Get the public - especially kids - interacting with NASA, not just being consumers ...
Amateur Astronomer
Temec 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This was worth waiting for. Perfectly organized. Don't miss the Search and Filter functions. Thank you, NASA!
Fills media issues; no TV
Morpheus-Indy 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Many iPhone users know the pain of using the official NASA home pages, which are mainly Flash-operated and don't work with MobileSafari. This app all but fixes that issue. While the app is a bit heavy on the style over substance line in the opening menu, it's ability to give access to NASA's image and video content is spot-on. The only downside is a lack of a connection to the NASA TV stream. While there is a site I know of to get the TV stream for the iPhone, I would give this fine app its fifth star if streaming were built-in. Nice work!
Love it just one request
eepgonewild 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Can you stream Nasa Tv from the app much like CNN streams live tv. that would make it perfect. still 5 stars because it's a great app.
Excellent
aus-city 5.0 stars Version: 1.0

rivkid007 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's great to see the official NASA app in the app store!
Great way to learn about NASA's missions with thousands of beautiful space & astronomy photos
grvaughan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great start for NASA's iPhone app, already you can learn about lots of NASA's missions and projects, see 50 videos, over 1,300 NASA spaceflight images, and over 5,200 beautiful Astronomy Picture of the Day images. This is a great educational tool & a great way for anyone to learn more about the space program.
Cool
dual64bit 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Neat app - worth the download!
Just a wee bit more
Dennis1701 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Add live mission video, then it would be five star.
Excellent job
Chaalz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app seems well thought out. You can even save images to your iPhones camera roll. Small details like that go a long way.

Jared 09 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Absolutely love this application! All of the great NASA mission information, countdown clocks and the ISS and other trackers. It’s also great to have all of the NASA & Astronomy images there and easy to browse. The videos and twitter feeds are great too. Also love that I can email and share stuff with others. Can’t wait for future versions and more features (how about visible path times using the GPS on the phone and NASA TV streaming). Keep up the great work!!!
No NASA TV link? Lame.
gthoennes 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was excited to see this in the App Store, but seriously disappointed that there is no function for watching NASA TV. How lame is that? I can browse the NASA site and find all the information I want on my desktop (although NASA TV no longer works with Snow Leopard), but how the iPhone app would be most usefull is when I'm away from my desktop machine and want to see a launch. I'll stick with Space Geek ($1.99 at the app store) which has a button for NASA TV and does a great job of letting you watch a LIVE STREAM. NASA is an outstanding agency that constantly blows me away, but its a NO GO for this launch!
Limited functionality
Wolf127 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was disappointed in NASA's iPhone app. Not only was it not up to date, as was advertised, but its information was extremely limited. One major feature is missing. Where is NASA TV?
It's ok
