NAVIGON launched the second generation of its iPhone navigation app, which “completely redefines core elements of iPhone navigation,” including a new map management function and an in app purchase option for quarterly map updates. As a result, users will be able to choose which map regions to download to their device, thus saving some storage space of their iPhone. Moreover, separating the app and maps also simplifies future updates, as users can update the app (about 40MB) without reinstalling the maps multiple times. For instance, users who own the USA version can pick the states they want immediately and download additional regions at a later time. NAVIGON 2.0 is also the first iPhone navigation app to offer quarterly map updates. The FreshMaps service uses map and POI database from NAVTEQ to ensure the most accurate data possible. In addition, this release of NAVIGON also comes with some UI improvements. It is Read More
Navigon 2.0 for iPhone offers new name, download options
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Nov 2011 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
Updated to include force-quit fix for missing favorites. If you're already a Navigon GPS app owner you'll find a significant free update at the app store today. If you haven't chosen a GPS navigation solution yet, Navigon has given you good reason to check the product out. Navigon 2.0 is a complete rethink of the app, with new GUI elements, and the ability to selectively download just the states you want maps for. Never get to the West coast? Save space by not putting those maps on your iPhone at all. Users of the North America and USA versions in particular will benefit, so map storage can be measured in megabytes rather than gigabytes. Even owners of the regional versions can save a lot of storage space. The result is a lot of extra room on your iPhone or iPad for music, movies, or apps. Even better for fence sitters, Navigon Read More
Since its release, Navigon’s MobileNavigator has been at the forefront of the Navigation category in Apple’s iOS App Store. It was the first of the name brand apps to be released for the iPhone, and it has stayed ahead of the pack, at least as far as features were concerned, ever since. MobileNavigator has also lead in another respect that isn’t so positive- size. The country and continent versions of the app come in well over the competition, which aren’t exactly small themselves. Sure, you’ve got all of those wonderful features, but when you only have 8 or 16 GB of space on your iOS device, giving up over 2 GB to one app is a hard pill to swallow. Well, Navigon is out in front of the pack again with their latest upgrade to version 2.0 of MobileNavigator. Now, you can add or subtract individual state maps at will so Read More
You can add augmented reality to the feature list for the Navigon app. The company calls it Reality Scanner, and it shows destinations and nearby points of interest by superimposing that information over a live camera view. This is a feature best used by pedestrians; I'd hate to see someone driving and waving his iPhone around to use this. Navigon is also adding what it calls Safety Camera alerts, which is a way to warn drivers of speed and red light cameras along the route. The information comes from the RoadTraps data base. The app works with US speed and red light cameras and is available as an in-app purchase of US$4.99 for a lifetime subscription. Navigon is also adding Traffic Check, which provides a quick graphic that appears after you plan a route, detailing traffic jams ahead of you. There is no charge for this service, and it does not Read More
There are plenty of apps that find restaurants, hospitals and other things near you using the iPhone's GPS. Localscope, a US$1.99 app, is the most complete and easy to use solution I've seen. Localscope easily lets you find destinations using Google or Bing, Foursquare, Twitter and Wikimapia. You don't have to re-enter your search terms, just slide from one search engine to another. One side benefit was that in my area of Southern Arizona, Google had far more information than Bing. The app makes it easy to compare search results. You can also search using your contacts or recent searches. Results can be viewed as a list, on a map, or using augmented reality, which is basically a live camera view with the direction of destinations superimposed on the screen. Phone numbers of destinations are provided, as well as websites for more info. A really nice feature is integration with both Read More

Where To? adds augmented reality
Calendar16 Sat, 05 Feb 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
I've looked at Where To? in the past, and found it a well thought out way to find points of interest in your vicinity. Another plus is that it integrates with the Navigon and TomTom apps so that you can send information for precise navigation. Now the app has added a new wrinkle: augmented reality. Basically that means, in either portrait or landscape mode, your camera will activate, and points of interest in categories that you select can be seen layered over the real-time image. The closer the location, the bigger the marker. Generally, I think augmented reality is overblown and not all that helpful, but the developers of Where To? have overcome some of the hazards of the feature and made it easier to use. When lots of labels appear very close together, you can zoom in and move them apart. Improvements have also been made to eliminate compass lag, Read More

Save 50 percent on MobileNavigator GPS apps
Calendar16 Fri, 13 Aug 2010 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
Navigon's MobileNavigator packs more features than just about any other GPS app--and it's on sale for half off. Standalone GPS navigators are pretty cheap these days, but when it comes to getting the most bang for the buck, it's hard to beat an app-equipped iPhone. One of the most popular navigation apps for the iPhone, Navigon's MobileNavigator North America, normally sells for $79.99, but in honor of the company's first-year App Store anniversary, it's on sale for $39.99. This half-off sale, which is good through Sunday, August 15, also extends to MobileNavigator USA (now $24.99); MobileNavigator Canada ($24.99); and MyRegion East, Central, and West ($14.99 each, down from $29.99). Navigon has discounted its prices for in-app purchases as well. Traffic Live, normally $24.99, is on sale for $12.99, while Panorama View 3D, which shows a more topographical view of your surroundings--and looks really cool--is now just $4.99. All versions of MobileNavigator Read More

Just the right price
djzapp 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.0
At the original price of $50, I may as well by a navigation device for the car, But for the $50 i would spend I get separate hardware ect. Now this being at $25 it is perfect. More than willing to pay this price for this product.
Doesn't work on iPad
?L0stS0ul? 2.0 stars Version: 1.6.0
The software looks great if I could do more then just simulations. It seems to require a much more accurate gps then the iPad has. It constantly says gps status of 80m and that is not good enough to navigate. Oh well. At least I didn't pay full price for this.
iTunes problem
