The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More

EA Acquires Bight Games
Calendar16 Tue, 16 Aug 2011 23:30:22 UTC +00:00
EA has made another move to better its position in the casual and mobile space. Fresh off a $750 million (or more) acquisition of PopCap, the publisher has acquired Bight Games, the creators of a few notable iOS IPs, the Facebook free-to-play and iOS resource game Trade Nations [Free], and the helping hands behind a gaggle of licensed titles, including  [$.99 / HD] port and Legends of Wreslemania [$2.99]. While this acquisition comes as a surprise of sorts, the space EA continues to buy itself into shouldn’t. EA has acquired numerous social and mobile developers over the last year or so, cementing the fact that it wants in on the emerging digital market in a bad way. The purchase price hasn’t been made public, which according to Venture Beat, indicates that EA didn’t have to pay much for the Canada-based developer. But how much is “not much” after a $750 million dollar Read More
Men like hitting stuff. At least, the “manly-men” of the world do, according to EA. The studio has kicked off its own Fathers’ Day celebration on the App Store, slashing prices for several of its action and sports-oriented titles. Big names like FIFA 11 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Madden 11 have been reduced to pennies, while others are receiving generous discounts. Dead Space, for example, is now just $3. Overall, there’s over a dozen EA-published games available at 85-percent off the normal rate. We’re not sure how much longer the “Many-Man sale” -- no joke -- will last, so it’s probably wise to grab any of these while they’re on the cheap. If you’re interested in more deals, know that EA isn’t the only publisher hacking at its standard prices -- Gameloft and Firemint have their own going on right now.   #5   Today, 04:45 PM Junior Member Read More
EA wields an incredible amount of power on the App Store. Their game catalog is incredibly vast, and consists of tons of well known IP that even non-gamers are familiar with. When they pulled a similar stunt this holiday season, EA absolutely dominated the top sales list which was great for gamers who scored absolutely insane deals, but bad for other developers who had their Christmas dreams decimated by EA controlling the majority of the App Store top 100. We'll see what happens this time around with this similarly massive sale- This is definitely a great time to fill in your collection if you're missing any of these EA titles. It's hard to really provide any real recommendations here since so many of these games are so good. If you don't have Dead Space yet, I'd really download that. Same with NBA Jam. Also, it's hard to really say which is Read More
EA puts iOS catalog on sale for Memorial Day
Calendar16 Fri, 27 May 2011 12:00:00 UTC +00:00
With another holiday comes another big EA app sale. Nearly every game in EA's iOS catalog is on sale for just a buck or two, so if you've been waiting to pick up any of EA's games cheaper than usual, head to the App Store and search for the ones you want. We'll call a few good deals out for you right here: NBA Jam for the iPhone is only US$0.99, as is Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Over on the iPad, Reckless Racing HD is just a buck, and so are SimCity and Snood. If you want to spend a few dollars, Mr. Moneybags, Dead Space is just $2.99 on the iPhone, and the latest edition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour is the same price on the iPad. These are all great deals and well worth the price if you've been waiting to pick any Read More

NBA Jam iOS Gets Something Console Gamers Wont
Calendar16 Thu, 31 Mar 2011 16:37:02 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/31/2011 at 8:37am | by Andrew Groen It seems more than a little bit strange, but apparently after the mid-season NBA trade flurry the iOS version of NBA Jam will be receiving a big roster update to bring the game up to speed with the current situation in the NBA. What's so strange about that? Well, iOS and other mobile platforms are the only ones getting that update. Console gamers, many of whom paid ten times as much for the game at release, wont be getting it. It's not just a roster update though. The game will also be getting some as-yet-undisclosed tweaks to the gameplay. Some users have complained of bugs in the iOS version of the title so it's likely to just be some tightening of the game's code. Which is good, because we wouldn't change very much about NBA Jam [iTunes Link]. It's a fantastic game, and Read More
'NBA Jam' Gets a Roster Update
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Mar 2011 19:27:09 UTC +00:00
Here’s a weird one: NBA Jam [$4.99] on consoles won’t be receiving a roster update that reflects all the mid-season moves teams made as the NBA trade deadline closed, but the mobile version of the title will -- and has. Starting now, one can go on a massive losing skid as the Knicks led by Carmelo “Defense Is For Babies” Anthony or, even better, get some insight into Deron Williams' surely deep, deep depression as a member of the Nets. As if roster updates weren’t enough, EA has also thrown in some “tweaks” to the core experience. The patch notes aren’t available online, but I’m assuming some of the bugs users have been freaking out about since release have been addressed. Don't mind that Felton guy. He's gone now, too! If you’ve been on the fence about NBA Jam, well, this is as good of a time as ever to get Read More
App Review: NBA Jam
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Feb 2011 21:56:04 UTC +00:00
posted by Joe Rossignol on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 1:56 pm.   BOOMSHAKALAKA! NBA Jam is an extremely old franchise that Electronic Arts had way back when Sega was cool. It was a huge success that gave fun, arcade-styled gameplay. Unfortunately, it slowly faded away. Fortunately, EA has brought this franchise back to life! With an updated roster, NBA Jam lives up to its past prime as the arcade basketball game to play because of its great gameplay, gorgeous graphics, abundant audio, reams of replay value, and a huge bang for your buck. NBA Jam offers a fun, fast-paced gameplay that is unique to any sports game on the App Store. The game features its own set of rules, or better put, lack of rules. It is really just some untraditional basketball. The games are 2 on 2, not the traditional 5 on 5. The game also has no fouls Read More
This Week at 148Apps: February 13-20
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Feb 2011 03:26:25 UTC +00:00
By Kyle Flanigan on February 20th, 2011 What did you miss this week at 148Apps? We're here to help you find that out! Angry Birds, angry subscription customers, and angry reviews! This week, February 13-20, Apple launched subscription services for applications, meaning that developers must offer an in-app purchase option if they offer an outside-app purchase option, like a newspaper does through its website. For example, if Company A offers a monthly service charge of $10 for its articles, and it has an application on the App Store, it must now offer that same deal for the same price ($10) or less through its iOS application. Here’s the catch – that $10 is subject to Apple’s 30% commission policy. “Apple feels as though they are providing lots of new users for these services and Apple wants to be compensated for that. That makes sense. They are providing a service and bringing Read More
iOS GameTime: With a Head This Big, Who Needs a Brain?

Posted 02/16/2011 at 1:00pm | by Nic Vargus In this very special edition of GameTime we explore the possibility that the larger a protagonist's head is, the less intelligence required to enjoy the game. Now don't get us wrong, all the games we played for this very special edition of GameTime™ are awesome, but they aren't what you'd call "puzzlers" or "thinkin' games." Free App Minis Talking Babies is the kind of game that isn't really a game at all. In it, babies with titanic têtes repeat everything you say in cute voices, dance around at the press of a button, and trick you into in-app purchases. In other words, nothing about this game is exceptional except the babies' heads. It's really not surprising that none of these babies have necks. You can also tickle the babies' stomachs to make them giggle. So, you know, it has that going for it. Read More

NBA Jam for iPhone slam dunks its way into the App Store!
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 21:12:22 UTC +00:00
By Brian Tufo, Thursday, Feb 10, 2011 | NBA Jam by EA Sports has made its way into the App Store and onto iPhone and iPod touch! If you are wondering whether this the same game that you — and everyone else — loved to play on SNES, the answer is yes! EA Sports has brought back the action-packed in-your-face NBA thriller! The game is just as fun as it way years ago and includes all of the current NBA teams, filled with some current stars as well as stars from yesteryears. You have to beat challenges to unlock certain older players but it is fun enough to make it worth your while. Also available are in-app purchases that will allow you to gain access to even more items in the game. So far, after a short time with the game, it seems as if it is spot on with the Read More
Review: Electronic Arts NBA Jam by EA Sports
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 17:33:00 UTC +00:00
Company: Electronic Arts Price: $5 Compatible: iPhones, iPod touches, iPads* Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Thursday, February 10, 2011 Category: Games - iPad, iPhone + iPod Some classic arcade games are ideally suited to the iPhone and iPod touch. Thanks to virtual control innovations that were trailblazed by others and perfected by Electronic Arts, the just-released NBA Jam by EA Sports ($5, version 1.0.0) is one of them. Based heavily upon the original 1993 release with nods to its successors, the iOS version of NBA Jam captures the spirit of the breakthrough two-on-two basketball game and maintains all of its innovations -- plus some that were subsequently introduced -- but also misses two obvious slam dunk opportunities. Released in the heyday of one-on-one fighting games such as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, Midway’s original NBA Jam took brilliant creative license with the sport of basketball, removing the visual clutter and squealing shoes Read More
'NBA Jam' Review – This Game is On Fire!!
Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 04:18:50 UTC +00:00
Back in the early and mid-90s, NBA Jam exploded in popularity in arcades and on home consoles everywhere with its over-the-top take on NBA basketball. Throwing down monster dunks, catching fire, and trash talking your opponent were all things that made NBA Jam such a blast back then, and that core entertainment was successfully transitioned into the franchise reboot that hit consoles in late 2010. Now an iOS version of NBA Jam [$4.99] based on the 2010 console version has hit the App Store, and despite a couple of omissions it overwhelmingly satisfies in every way if you were ever a fan of the original NBA Jam series. The familiar NBA Jam gameplay returns here featuring a relatively rule-free game of 2-on-2 basketball with an emphasis on pulling off insane physics-defying dunks and ridiculous shooting sprees. Besides adhering to a 24 second shot clock and a no goaltending rule, pretty much Read More
