Two popular iOS apps recently got significant updates, so fire up your iPhones/iPads/iPod touches and download your goodies. First, Netflix has redone the user interface for the app. It's a lot better to look at, shows more movies per page, and has a nice graphical representation of movies you have started but haven't finished, and how far along you are. The app also has some bug fixes and adds access for Latin America. Still no support for AirPlay, which is a bit of a downer. Meanwhile, Google has updated its official Gmail app. The new version supports nested label improvements, custom sounds (iOS 5 only) and what Google calls "numerous bug fixes" and UI improvements. The Gmail app is universal, while Netflix has separate apps for the iPhone and iPad. Read More
Netflix Releases a Redesigned iPad App
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Dec 2011 21:25:52 UTC +00:00
We teased you with the updated version of Netflix’s iPad app several weeks ago, and the redesign has officially gone live in the App Store. Netflix 2.0 for iOS brings with it a revamped iPad interface and several cosmetic changes. Requiring iOS 5, Netflix’s updated app is available for free in the App Store. What’s New in Version 2.0 The new layout is great, and it makes browsing Netflix a much more enjoyable experience on the iPad. Buttons and other controls are prominently displayed for quick access. You have multiple ways to browse different types of content, and all of the features from the previous app are still included. Netflix’s iOS app still doesn’t support AirPlay, however. Let us know what you think of the new Netflix iPad app in the comments! Read More
Netflix for iPad gets a sexy new interface
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Dec 2011 22:00:43 UTC +00:00
The vastly improved Netflix 2.0 for iPad. Last month, Android tablet owners were treated to a Netflix interface overhaul, one designed to help users "more easily discover the content they want to watch." Now it's the iPad's turn: just-released Netflix 2.0 brings a refreshed interface to Apple's tablet. The update is available now, and it's a required download: you can no longer run the previous version of the app. According to Netflix Product Manager Zal Bilimoria, "The new app is really a big step forward; it is much more immersive and provides greater focus on our growing catalog by displaying twice as many titles than the previous interface. In addition, through optimization for touch-enabled tablets, Netflix members can now swipe through rows and rows of titles featuring larger artwork." In my mind, the biggest improvement is the Continue Watching carousel, which shows thumbnails of the last six shows you were watching Read More

Netflix says updated iPad app coming soon
Calendar16 Tue, 15 Nov 2011 16:30:00 UTC +00:00
Netflix rolled out a new Android version of its tablet app that'll soon land on the iPad. The updated app has a redesigned user interface that's bigger and more beautiful. The app manages to fit extra movie thumbnails per screen and presents them in a visually appealing way. Similar to previous versions, the Netflix app lets you view your Instant Queue and continue watching content where you last left off. It also includes selections from Netfilx's recommendation engine and categories so you can easily find new content to watch. I've tested the app on the Motorola Xoom and can't wait for it to hit the iPad in the upcoming weeks. Read More
How to go PC free with iOS 5 and your iPhone or iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 14 Oct 2011 19:07:35 UTC +00:00
One big advantage of iOS 5 is the ability to use it independently of a Mac or PC. Ironic, since another key new feature is iCloud, which serves to bring the two closer together at the same time. Here’s how to cut the cord if you’d rather your mobile devices and traditional computers live separate (but connected) lives. Once you’ve completed the iOS 5 update, you no longer need to be connected to iTunes at all. For anything. No, really. It may be hard for a longtime Apple mobile user to wrap their head around, but all the business of setting up, activating and other initial duties can be handled away from the computer. This does come with a couple caveats, however: Apple now lets you navigate the entire process of getting your iPad or iPhone set up with helpful intro screens on the device itself. This looks much like what Read More

Netflix Adds Subtitles to iPad, iPhone App
Calendar16 Fri, 13 May 2011 18:55:23 UTC +00:00
Netflix has expanded the availability of closed captioning on its streaming service with the latest update of its iOS application. [Hat tip to Zatz Not Funny!] With the update, the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch join a growing list of consumer electronics devices that support streaming subtitles through the service. Netflix has been hard at work adding subtitles to its streaming library, ever since first announcing their availability about a year ago. But it has struggled to do so, mainly due to a lack of standards. Still, Netflix is making some headway. In February, Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt announced subtitles were available for 3,500 TV and movie titles, which make up about 30 percent of all streaming. (A complete list of assets with subtitles can be found at movies.netflix.com/Subtitles.) By the end of the year, Netflix hopes to increase that to titles that 80 percent of all streaming. Netflix for iOS updated, now sporting English subtitles

Netflix may have rolled out support for the first few Android smartphones yesterday, however it seems they remembered to give the iOS users some love in the form of a small update. The updated version of Netflix for iOS (version 1.3) can be found in the App Store and remains available as a free download. Of course, you need a Netflix subscription to actually use it though. Otherwise, in terms of the new features in this release—subtitles. Introducing Subtitles! Now you can follow the action when watching foreign language content, or when listening to the audio is not possible, such as when working out, or in loud environments. That said, not every movie has subtitles available. Read More

The subtitles of course are optional and can be turned on or off. The app has also been updated to fully support iOS 4.3.3 and iOS 4.2.8 for Verizon users. Apple has been leading the way on accessibility features and it’s great to see App Store apps following that lead. Anyone been waiting for subtitles? How are they? Read More
Netflix adds captioning to iOS apps
Calendar16 Thu, 12 May 2011 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Adding captioning to movies in Netflix for the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone is going to be a big deal for a lot of people, and Netflix has added that feature today. It's already present when you watch Netflix movies with a browser on a desktop or laptop, but now mobile users can take advantage of captions as well. Unfortunately, not all films have this feature. If there is captioning, a little voice balloon icon will appear on the volume control. Tap it and select English, which is the only option for now. I tried it in several movies, and about half of those I sampled have the feature. The captions are in yellow text and are easy to read. Captions are going to be really great for the hearing impaired, or even nice for watching a movie in a crowded environment. As of this writing, the version listed in the Read More
'Netflix' Review – A Lot of Promise, But Falls Short
Calendar16 Fri, 01 Apr 2011 17:29:04 UTC +00:00
This was posted on April Fool's day I ran across what looked to be a little gem of a game in the App Store recently called Netflix [Free]. After a quick perusal of the screenshots, I quickly downloaded this free universal app. I was shocked at how many different titles it contained across many genres, easily trumping even the best all-in-one game box games on the App Store. Unfortunately, my experience with Netflix has been abysmal, and is akin to a bait-and-switch scam which should have never been allowed in the App Store. To be fair, Netflix does contain an impressive list of titles. As I searched through the library of available games I came across such gems as BloodRayne, House of the Dead, Postal, Doom, and many, many more. My mouth was literally salivating as I though about being able to play these games anywhere and anytime on my iOS Read More

Wither iPad? A Testimonial On Its Usefulness
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Mar 2011 17:45:00 UTC +00:00
(image source: Apple, Inc) With the release of the iPad 2, there has been a lot of commentary on the overall usefulness of the iPad. Even amongst the iSource staff, there is some debate as to whether or not the iPad is a truly useful device, or merely an expensive toy. Here’s my take. When the iPad was announced a year ago, I had no plans at all to buy it. Like many others, I concluded that it was little more than a large iPod Touch; and I simply didn’t see a need for one, especially considering that I had a perfectly usable iPhone. When my friend Mike got one, I played around with it a bit; but ultimately, I came to the same conclusion – a big iPod. Much later, when I started traveling for work again, I finally realized how useful the iPad could be and decided to take Read More
Netflix for iPad Gets a Facelift
Calendar16 Sat, 05 Mar 2011 17:46:00 UTC +00:00
By – Netflix is one of our favorite services that’s available today. It lets us watch unlimited streaming movies and rent DVDs for less than $10 a month. What’s best is that most of our toys actually have support for the service. Whether it’s Apple TV, the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPhone, iPod touch or the iPad, we have a way to watch great movies instantly…so long as there’s an internet connection. Still, of all the Netflix apps we’ve tried, the iPad by far had the worst interface. It was slow and cumbersome. Mostly because it was really nothing more than the website ported onto the iPad’s interface. Strangely, even then, it ran much slower than the actual Netflix site did on the tablet computer. Now it looks like the Netflix App will be improving significantly thanks to a recent update. Now, the application looks as if it’s actually made Read More
Netflix has recently updated the Netflix interface on the iPad, though it seems a little strange as to how they did that. I can say that after firing up the Netflix app on my iPad I have an updated version and layout. That said, I cannot remember downloading and installing an update to the Netflix app itself. And furthermore, checking the iOS App Store listing shows the Netflix app has last been updated on December 21, 2010. Strange, but what we can tell you is that the iPad version of Netflix is now more like the iPhone version of Netflix. In other words some of the features such as DVD queue management have gone away. Still, while it may be missing some the simplified looking version with options to go Home, to Genres, Search or browse the Instant Queue make it seem a little more user friendly. Bottom line, it seems Read More

Best Media Apps for the iPad
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Dec 2010 23:32:52 UTC +00:00
The historical media verticals of radio, television, print and Web evaporate inside the frame of an iPad—it’s all just content, backlighted and inviting, waiting for the swipe of a finger. Long-form narrative and news has found a reliable wing man in the iPad. On the desktop, we clink links, scan the result and then click some more, drilling down in search of information, but never actually reading much of anything. Because of its screen size and relative heft, the iPad allows and encourages the user to quit typing so much, lean back and actually read something. And in the process, it renews the romance of reading: People want to touch what they are learning about and the iPad enables that intimate relationship, along with reading something longer than a Twitter post or a news alert. A few of my favorites: NEWS (FREE): With its smartly organized grid on the left and Read More

Netflix App Now Supports Video Out
Calendar16 Tue, 05 Oct 2010 16:11:38 UTC +00:00
By – First the good news: The Netflix App now supports video out. The bad news? Those of you with anything other than the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G are out of luck. This may seem like a bad thing, but keep in mind that you may have a great Netflix-enabled device in your living room right now. Some of the most popular consumer electronics are all capable of playing back streaming video on your TV: the Wii, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 as well as many of the set-top boxes currently available. The plus side is that they aren’t limited by their battery life and most of those will output in HD. Something neither the iPod Touch nor the iPhone 4 can do (That is with video out to your TV). Either way, if your iPhone or iPod Touch is your set-top box for now, have a Read More

Netflix iPhone App Updated, Now Streams to TV
Calendar16 Tue, 05 Oct 2010 15:25:31 UTC +00:00
The Netflix iPhone application has just been updated to a new version which now supports "video out" on the iPhone 4 and the 4th generation iPod Touch devices. That means that Netflix subscribers can now use the app to stream the on-demand programming from their mobile handheld to their TV set using a connector cable like this one available for sale in the Apple store. Who needs an Apple TV now? This small but important update to the iPhone application doesn't deliver any other new features, only the video out functionality and miscellaneous bug fixes. But for many Netflix subscribers, this is going to be big news. So, why would a Netflix user need to stream from a mobile device to the TV? Why wouldn't they just watch a DVD instead? For one thing, DVDs-by-mail takes time - the mobile option provides instant gratification. And although Netflix streaming is supported through Read More

That’s where the beauty of this update comes in. Imagine being on vacation with your family and you all want to watch a movie together. Netflix has updated their iOS application with video out, so you can hook up your iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4g (sadly, those are the only supported models), to a TV for big-screen streaming. A welcome addition, especially for those without an Apple TV or console that supports Netflix’s Instant Queue. What’s New In Version 1.1.1 Check it out on the App Store. Read More
Netflix Streaming Coming to Canada
Calendar16 Tue, 21 Sep 2010 22:01:31 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 3:01 pm.   According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will be bringing the streaming portion of its video rental service to Canadian users. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is rumored be going to Toronto, Canada tomorrow for the announcement. At the moment, there is no word on whether or not physical DVD rentals will be coming to Canucks, but it is certainly a possibility. Netflix entering the Canadian market, its first foreign expansion, has local video distribution players girding for cutthroat competition as still more Internet content-streaming behemoths like Apple TV and Boxee get set to launch north of the border. They and other players like cable giants Rogers Communications and Quebecor Media have been bolstering their online video offerings in recent months in anticipation of Netflix’s expansion northwards, and lowering the cost of their data plans. by The app, which is free for Netflix subscribers (subscriptions start at $8.99 per month), works with iPhones or iPod touch devices running iOS 3.1.3 or later. Like its iPad app, Netflix for the iPhone allows users to search for movies and TV shows as well as playing titles already in their Instant Q. The app has not been optimized for iOS 4 or for the iPhone 4, but we expect that some of those updates may come in the future. The app operates very similarly to both its iPad counterpart and the newest Netflix interface on Roku. It makes us curious if an iOS iTV app might not be on the horizon too. The only real downside of the app is that like its iPad counterpart (and like the set-top box Netflix solutions), it isn’t possible to manage your DVD or Blu-ray queue from the application itself. This means you Read More
Netflix Comes to the iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 27 Aug 2010 14:00:42 UTC +00:00
Previously only available for the iPad, the official Netflix app is now available for the iPhone too, which should see a massive increase in both the amount of downloads and the amount of people enjoying streaming content out and about.  Obviously you’ll need to be a Netflix subscriber to enjoy this one, but once you’re up and running, the app syncs with your queue straight away, even remembering where you stopped the last program you were watching! If that sounds good, how about offline streaming and online streaming over Wi-Fi and 3G, then?  Yes, if you want to download something to watch later, you can do, with the content stored on your iPhone with no interaction with iTunes necessary, or if you have a sudden desire to watch something in particular, you won’t have to find a Wi-Fi hotspot, as 3G streaming is enabled! Aside from this, the other options are Read More

Netflix App Released for iPhone/iPod touch

Today, while most of the U.S. was sleeping, Apple approved the Netflix update which brings universal support for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. On the iPad, it doesn’t do much beyond adding a new icon, but I couldn’t access Netflix until I updated. The home page shows you different categories, then lists a couple movies from each. One of the interesting things about the app is that the tabs on the bottom are translucent, so you can see the content below them when you’re scrolling through a list. From what I can tell, the application is a browser that just loads a custom mobile site. When your playback times out, it’ll ask you if you want to resume. It also does this when you switch back to it from another app using fast app switching in iOS 4. Playback loading is what you’d expect from a streaming app. Not terribly fast, Read More

A movement to watch what we want, where we want, when we want. For me, personally, there’s no way I can rid myself of my cable bill. My wife is the chief TV watcher in the family who also pays the bills, so, well, we’re getting cable. However, were I to be a single guy, I’d not pay for cable; I just can’t justify the money. How to Watch Netflix Movies on Your iPhone 4

A few weeks ago we learned how to watch Netflix on a jailbroken iPhone. Netflix now has its official iPhone app in the App Store. Click here for more info. Step 1: Download the Netflix app for iPad to iTunes. Step 2: Right click on the Netflix app you just downloaded and select ‘Show in Windows Explorer’ if you’re on a PC, or ‘Show in Finder’ if you’re on a Mac. Step 3: Rename Netflix 1.0.4.ipa to Netflix 1.0.4.zip and extract the zip file to your desktop. Step 4: Look for the Payload folder inside the extracted folder. iPad App Roundup: 6 Television & Movie Apps

If you’re a movie and/or television buff, then the iPad may be your new best friend. We’ve got a round up of six different apps to help you consume your favorite televisions shows and movies. Enjoy! Netflix has made a name for itself with its excellent service, and many were surprised when it announced it would be coming to the iPad before the iPhone (on launch day, too). The Netflix app is basically a one-window browser that loads a tailored version of the site, allowing you to watch any movie in its instant-watch collection. You can also manage your movie queue, adding or deleting movies as you please. The app isn’t very polished, but it works. I’ve watched the entire three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender on it without incident. The app is free; the subscription, however, isn’t, and it’ll run you $9 a month. By Jeremy Sikora, Wednesday, May 19, 2010 | Today the free Netflix iPad application was updated to support video output via Apple’s optional dock connector to VGA adapter. This lets you watch your video on a much larger display. It’s a feature I have been waiting for since the application was available and a much welcomed addition to this app! To watch instant content you do need a Netflix subscription and if you plan on using that VGA adapter (available from Apple Online) to watch an iTunes video you can forget about it as Apple hasn’t enabled that for anything other than their A/V composite and component cables. As such, those new to the platform might want a refresher on Mac history. In 2008, the documentary Welcome to Macintosh appeared on the scene, introducing a new generation of Mac fans to some of the early luminaries in the Mac universe like Andy Hertzfeld and Guy Kawasaki. At Macworld Expo 2009, another documentary premiered called Macheads. This second film was tagged "a fanboy documentary," and it explored the good and bad sides of Mac love through interviews with hard core fans like Violet Blue. Netflix is revolutionizing the way we get movies. Before, one would have to drive to the video store to select a movie and drive back once that movie was due. With Netflix, the movie comes to you in the mail and more recently, streamed over the internet. Now Netflix has released an app for the iPad so you can always be near your movies. The app syncs up with your preexisting account or lets new users sign up for a free trial. Once in the app, you can browse through the large collection of videos offered for instant streaming. Although most of the popular movies or recently released titles are not available, there are quite a few blockbuster films to view. When you can't instant stream a video, you can add it to your queue to be mailed over to you. The app itself didn't really seem to be optimized for Read More
Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. Wi-Fi Edition: Can An iPad Replace Your iPhone?
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Apr 2010 21:52:06 UTC +00:00
Posted 04/08/2010 at 1:52pm | by J.R. That got us thinking: What would it be like to spend a day with only the iPad? With that challenge in mind, we (mostly) stuck our trusty iPhone 3GS away for a full day and “made do” with only the Wi-Fi model of iPad. As it turns out, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. We have yet to find any iPhone apps that don’t also run on the iPad -- even seemingly more complex ones such as SlingPlayer Mobile or Skype work just fine -- so most of the iPhone functionality can already be duplicated just by installing the same apps you already use. It's pretty clear that new iPad owners are hitting the app store in droves. Books, games and movies are all flying off the virtual shelves. Since you may be suffering from sensory overload, or just looking for some ideas, here are some things I've seen that might be worth a look. I tried Time Magazine (U.S. $4.99) and Popular Science ($4.99) magazines on the iPad. The both look striking on the luscious iPad screen, but neither one really excited me enough to get me to subscribe. Time had nice use of video. Pop Sci looked stunning, but didn't have a lot of text. I think both magazines will need to come down below 5 bucks an issue to attract readers. 10 iPad Apps You Should Buy Right Now
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 16:00:17 UTC +00:00
So, you got your shiny new iPad on Saturday and you’ve done all the basic stuff on it: web browsing, email, video. But now that the awesomeness of that has worn off, it’s time to get some new apps. Here are the ones you should buy first. Imagine holding the entire Netflix instant watch database in your hands. This is it. The app is free, but you’ll need a Netflix subscription if you don’t already have one. IMDb is an iPad-friendly version of the Internet Movie Database. iPad: The First Real Family Computer
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 15:38:13 UTC +00:00
With the iPad's arrival this weekend, a holiday weekend for many Americans, this new iPad owner had the chance to see the device in action. In fact, "see" is the operative word here. Not, "play with myself," as is the case with most new tech gadgets I purchase. Instead, I simply watched from a distance as, over the course of the day, the iPad found its way into the hands of nearly every family member from ages 4 months to 87 years old. The incredible thing? No one walked away confused, frustrated or disappointed. It did precisely what they wanted it to do and with such ease that my tech support was not required - not even once - allowing me to sit back and relax...with an old-fashioned, paper-based magazine. After hearing the hoopla from the iPad launch, the crowd of "not-so-early" adopters has likely been left wondering if this is Read More

By Jeremy Sikora, Saturday, Apr 3, 2010 | You say you just picked up a new iPad and wanted to sit back and watch your favorite episode of Lost or perhaps a blockbuster movie? If you are a Netflix member you can do just that with the official Netflix iPad application! [iTunes Link - Free] All you have to do is download the Netflix app from the App Store and you can instantly watch TV shows and movies directly on your iPad. Once you start the app you will be taken to the Netflix website that seems to be optimized for iPad and you will enter in your password and username and everything will be familiar. If you start to watch a movie from your computer or TV and want to resume it on your iPad, you can. Even better is that since the app uses the web interface you have Read More
Im Heft enthalten ist die bereits verlinkte Stephen Fry-Kolumne: I have met five British Prime Ministers, two American Presidents, Nelson Mandela, Michael Jackson and the Queen. My hour with Steve Jobs certainly made me more nervous than any of those encounters. Die 64 Megabyte der Anwendung soll nur die eine Ausgabe beinhalten und keine Möglichkeit der Aktualisierung zulassen. Time Magazine kostet auf bedrucktem Papier derzeit $20 US-Dollar Read More

Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 18:00:42 UTC +00:00
In less than 24-hours the iPad will finally be released. Now, the hardware, however sexy it might be, is not why so many people are itching to buy the device: It’s all about the apps! In the ramp-up to the iPad release, more and more applications have been announced or previewed and now that the apps are live in iTunes, we already know what apps will be available on day one. Over the last few weeks, we’ve thought a lot about what apps we most want to try on the iPad upon its release and these ten represent some of our favorites. The selection of applications is varied — from games to web services to whole new product types. However successful the iPad ends up being will hinge in part on the apps available for the device. If these ten are any indication — iPad users have a lot to look Read More
The Best iPad Apps At Launch
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 18:09:19 UTC +00:00
In preparation for the launch of the iPad tomorrow, iPad Apps are live in iTunes and we’re sorting through the best ones as fast as we can. But with more than 2,000 iPad apps in the App Store, the choices are already daunting. To help you find the best apps at launch, we’ve put together the definitive list below. It includes all the iPad apps reviewed on TechCrunch, as well as other promising ones we have not gotten to yet. If you have a favorite you think should go on this list, tell us why in comments. Here is our list, which we will keep updating through the launch of the iPad: Apple’s answer to the Amazon Kindle, iBooks turns the iPad into an electronic book reader with 60,000 books at launch to choose from (the app is free, the e-books are not). Although the Kindle has many more titles (450,000), Read More
If you're anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new iPad, you might want to head over to the app store, where a couple thousand iPad apps are already available for purchase. You can shop now, and sync with the iPad when it arrives. However, the question is what to buy? The current top sellers are Apple's iWork apps: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, so you'll get no help from that list. Instead, check out this crop of must-have apps that are already in the store and ready to be installed on day one. My picks ended up being equal parts free and paid apps, proving that you don't need to spend a fortune to equip the shiny new device you've already spent a fortune on. I wrote about the possibility of a Netflix streaming video app earlier this week, and now it's actually available in the store. It's definitely a must-have for Read More
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Apr 2, 2010 | The streaming video apps for iPad are now in the US iTunes App Store so if you’ve been waiting to get your mobile TV and Movies on, go grab Netflix [Free - iTunes link] and ABC Player [Free - iTunes link]. Netflix makes use of your existing Netflix unlimited membership (yeah, you need one of those but you can grab a free trial to test it out). Once you’re set up, you can pretty much watch the content you want, when and where you want. Browse and manage your queue from the iPad, watch on your TV, PC, or iPad and resume right where you left off. ABC Player lets you watch full episodes of LOST, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Desperate Housewives, and more. Search and schedule make it easy to find what you need and viewing history means even though it’s streaming, Read More
