Calendar16 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 05:09:11 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Sep 30, 2011 | Have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and curious which are the best, most must-have RSS feed reading apps you need to check out? We’ve already covered readers in general, from eBooks to comics, but this time we really wanted to focus on RSS news. So if you want to keep your syndication really simple, and yourself up to date with the latest new, read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended RSS feed readings apps for iOS. NetNewsWire is the granddaddy of iOS RSS readers and is still a favorite for many. It syncs with Google Reader, and while in version past that was a laborious process, improvements to both the app and iOS have made it much smoother these days. It’s now been given a whole new codebase and has been picked up by a new team of dedicated developers so Read More

Typical Day With the iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Jun 2010 15:32:07 UTC +00:00
My recent look at a typical day with the Sprint EVO 4G was well received and I started getting requests for a similar look at a day with the iPad. Not one to ignore good requests, this post covers a typical day with the iPad in Mobile Tech Manor. I should point out that the iPad is so different from most gadgets I write about and I’m not sure there is a “typical” day. Perhaps I should more accurately present a “recent day” with the iPad. It is still dark outside when the merciless alarm rouses me from a deep sleep and I stumble out of bed to greet the day. The iPad is lying on the night stand where I left it last night, having read an e-book before bedtime. It has not been charging overnight, as the extended battery life you’ve heard about on the iPad is not fiction. Read More
Voices that Matter iPhone: "From iPhone to iPad" panel
Calendar16 Tue, 27 Apr 2010 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
To end the first day of the Voices that Matter iPhone conference in Seattle last weekend, a group of veteran iPhone developers sat down for a roundtable panel and talked about the iPad. August Trometer (Yowza!!), Brent Simmons (NetNewsWire), Kyle Kinkade (Tap Tap Revenge), Daniel Pasco of Black Pixel, Tim Wood of The Omni Group, and TUAW's own Erica Sadun were questioned by moderator Chuck Toporek about the differences between the iPhone and the iPad and a few of the pressing issues that both devices are likely to face in the future. Even though the panel ended the day (and all of the attendees and panelists were craving the eventual beer and pizza that would be available later in the evening), it was a lively discussion that offered both insight and frank opinions from these developers. Read on to hear what they said about Flash on the iPhone, app pricing, and Read More
This Week in Mobile Tech Manor #84: Free Network Upgrade
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Apr 2010 11:15:11 UTC +00:00
At long last Friday rolls around, and that can only mean it’s time to think back on the week. The home office, Mobile Tech Manor, was as busy as can be with some new gadgets arriving. I bought too many RSS readers for the iPad and am waffling between two of them. I have been on a quest to find me some 4G in the area, with no luck. Come on in and let’s visit for a while. Enter the Gadgets A couple of toys showed up at the Manor and I had fun playing with them. Sort of. The first to arrive was the Sprint Overdrive, the 4G capable modem that functions as a Wi-Fi router to share the 4G. I’m sure it would share it fine if I could just find some. The Sprint 4G coverage map shows the area around Mobile Tech Manor to be blanketed with 4G, Read More
The iPhone is home to a lot of great new developers, but it's also the new home for a lot of old-school Mac guys as well; Brent Simmons is of the second kind. His NetNewsWire is a classic Mac app that's been remade for the iPhone, and now the iPad, with the clean, quick simplicity that Simmons' work is known for. We caught up with him right after his "Best Practices for Content Apps" talk here at 360iDev in San Jose, CA this week, and had a quick chat about how the iPad version of NetNewsWire is doing. Jenny Blumberg of NewsGator's developer support team also joined us. Simmons told us both how the iPad version of his app has made more money than you'd expect, and what he's most excited about from Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 announcement last week. Read on for more. I Finally Found a Favorite iPhone RSS Reader App
Calendar16 Thu, 01 Oct 2009 14:09:28 UTC +00:00
My favorite iPhone RSS ‘app ‘ has always (since Day 1 with the V1 iPhone) been the Google Reader web app.  I ‘ve tried lots of native apps ever since they first started appearing in the App Store “ Byline, Boltreader, Feeds, Doppler, Newsstand, smartRSS, and others.  None that I tried ever left me wanting to use it regularly, and I always reverted back to GReader after spending time with others.  Until the last week or so.  The NetNewsWire app has kind of snuck up on me ever since I started using it.  I had mixed feelings when I first tried out its new 2.0 version “ but it has grown on me a lot since then. The thing is, I now find I haven ‘t looked at GReader on the iPhone in over a week.  I ‘ve been using NetNewsWire all the time, and finding it a pleasure to use.  Read More
NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone Brings Google Reader Sync
Calendar16 Fri, 25 Sep 2009 11:48:50 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Sep 25, 2009 | NetNewsWire [Free with ads - iTunes link] and NetNewsWire Premium [$1.99 - iTunes link] for iPhone, the mobile version of NetNewsWire for Mac and FeedDemon for Windows, have just hit 2.0 and brings a lot of compelling features to the table — especially for RSS geeks: It’s enough that I’m finally going to go all in on Google Reader and NNW 2.0 (at least for the next week — we’ll see if it sticks). Screens after the break. If you give NetNewsWire 2.0 a go as well, let us know what you think. Read More
NetNewsWire 2.2
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Sep 2009 14:20:49 UTC +00:00
NetNewsWire was one of the original rss fead readers that was offered for free and gave users a decent experience. Slowly more and more apps came out and I eventually weaned myself from the app, as I began using the ever-awesome Google Reader. But now, NetNewsWire is back, and has seen some amazing interface tweaks and the addition of its biggest selling point, syncing perfectly with Google Reader. Now wherever I am, I can view my feeds. It was already possible by using the Google Reader web app for accessing your feeds, but this new iteration makes it simple and the interface is butter smooth. But once again it is not without its issues and problems. The new NetNewsWire only syncs with Google Reader. That means all your old feeds (if you were a previous user) have to be migrated to Google Reader if you want to use the app. Once Read More
NetNewsWire for OS X and iPhone Officially Released
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Sep 2009 14:11:24 UTC +00:00
NewsGator released todayNetNewsWire 3.2 for OS X. At the end of July, NewsGator announced the ending of its news feed subscription service and released a beta version of NetNewsWire 3.2 with Google Reader synchronization. The way NewsGator handled the ending of its service and migration to Google Reader left a lot to be desired. After sending out an email advising people to immediately switch to the beta, it received many complaints due to the numerous bugs and the large embedded ad in the bottom left of the window. The ad was removed for remaining betas — until today, when it was brought back at half the previous size. To remove the ad you must purchase a license for $10. I’m not sure if this is a special introductory price or not, but for me $10 is a great deal and buying a license was a no-brainer. As well as many bug fixes Read More

iPhone/iPod touch: Ever since the FeedDemon/ NetNewsWire RSS readers announced exclusive Google Reader syncing, we've been waiting for that anywhere-you-go goodness to arrive on iPhones. Now it has, and NetNewsWire 2.0 is almost certainly better than Google Reader's mobile site. To be fair, Google Reader's mobile view is still a great option for Android, Palm Pre, and other non-iPhone browsers that want a look at what's new in their RSS collections. But the NetNewsWire app doesn't require a new browser window, won't lose your place if you venture off to read a link, stores items for offline reading, and offers some great navigation and sharing options, while all the time syncing what you read and star back to your Reader account. Of course, if you're using another reader for your feed needs, NetNewsWire can easily work from your OPML file (assuming you're okay with creating a Google account for backup syncing). Read More
iTunes 9.0.1 und NetNewsWire 2.0
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Sep 2009 07:02:52 UTC +00:00
My6Sense: A Smarter Feed Reader for the iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 30 Jul 2009 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
Google Reader offers a nifty mobile interface, and apps like Byline (iTunes link) and NetNewsWire (iTunes link) are well-designed native apps that allow iPhone users to keep up with their feeds. But slogging through a few hundred subscriptions on the iPhone's small screen can quickly turn into a frustrating experience. My6Sense, which launched the first beta of its web-based mobile feed reader last December, is now finally ready to release its native iPhone app. Thanks to the app's ability to organize your feeds according to a personalized recommendation system that automatically learns from your preferences as you browse through your feeds, keeping up with hundreds of feeds on the iPhone is now easier than ever before. Note: the app should have been available in the App Store by now, but Apple, as usual, is rather tardy. My6sense expects the app to go live soon, but the exact time is up to Read More

Reviews

Disappointing, virtually unusable for lots of feeds
Alderete 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have been a NetNewsWire user on my Mac for about as long as the application has existed, paying for the application back when it was a commercial product. And I really like it, on the desktop.
Nice idea, but
macguyincali 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Those of us who are power users of NetNewsWire on the mac and have a lot of subscriptions, the iPhone application gets so bogged down downloading feeds that it is virtually unusable. I'm hoping they give us some more options for at least choosing a smaller subset of subscriptions or at least make it snappier with the larger set. I have yet to be able to successfully use it as it spends freezes up while waiting to download the hundreds of feeds I have.
Thank you for the improvements
anes doc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I use this application hourly!! I thought it was just ok in its initial release, but with the numerous improvements the application is becoming a "must-have" that is friendly to use. Thank you for the update. The updated program is much better than the average three-stars it has at the time of this review.
Mark as unread
Swingler 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The one thing that makes this app unusable for me is the lack of a "mark as unread" button, so I can go and follow up on a story later when I am at my desktop. Besides general slowness, it looks like it's got decent potental...but the current web-client is far more usable right now.
Bzzzt, try again NewsGator.
CDubber 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sadly, the dedicated iPhone/iPod app is more cumbersome to use and loads far more slowly than the NewsGator Mobile site on my iPhone. This app needs a major overhaul right out of the gate. Very disappointing.
A Great App
DWPJR 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I use NNW of my Mac as well as my iPhone. This recent update introduced some great features, and it hasn't crashed once. I would like to see the ability to manage clippings on the phone, and I liked the previous version's way of managing read items. I want to still be able to look back through some feeds from time to time. This new way to manage removes them once you mark them as read. Can this be an option in future versions?
Awesome!
Awakened08 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The latest update fixes almost all of the issues I had with the original release and performance is much improved. This is by far my favorite app and I can't wait until all of your revisions are pushed out by Apple. It's applications like this that make being an iPhone owner a such a pleasure.
Slow
torifile 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've wanted NNW on my iPhone for a long time. It's my most used app on my Mac. Obviously, I'm a news junkie so I've got a lot of feeds. The app is really slow to load news items. Very disappointing.
Disappointing
TBonge 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was excited that this would be the killer app for me, but it just does not work well. It's slow and locks up. I do have hundreds of feeds though so it might work if you don't have too many. I will stick to the newsgator web app and hope they release an update for this one.
Works Fine | Limited features, but more to come...
iamse7en 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The Good: syncs with your Newsgator account so all your unread feeds can be read on-the-go; web pages can be viewed within the application (this is my favorite feature because many feeds only have partial syndication) The Bad: syncing/downloading takes a bit long; it crashes every so often; very limited features: no emailing/sharing articles, no viewing of clippings folder, etc; interface needs work: article titles' font too big, number of unreads don't show if feed name is too long, and a few other little things The Bottom Line: NetNewsWire has it's problems and limited features, but it works fine and there is much improvement and many new features to come. This is a very promising app and I'm happy they released it even though it's a very early prototype.
Simple, easy to use, great
overthehillpunk 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I use NNW for iPhone more than any other app. I travel a lot and am in sales so it helps to keep in touch with my customers, competitors and vertical. I use clippings often, to read mire indepth on my desktop. My only wish is a capability to add/remove feeds from this device.
Good first shot
Neil from NY 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I like this so far, but would hope that we see some new features in future updates. Especially:
For me, large quantity of feeds synced from desktop leads to slow performance and crashes
Rob in Oakland 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have a lot of feeds from my desktop version - things synced up nicely, but while it was working for me, it was very slow. And now it is in a unrecoverable crash state -- each time it launched it either crashes immediately, or tries to load the feed currently in focus, but then crashes before it can. Going to try uninstalling and reinstalling.
Launched Prematurely
VMedina 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Can't get it to work at all. Entered my account information, watched it sync up and then...nothing. No feeds. Went to newsgator.com added the location as an additional (why wouldn't you just tell me to do that NNW?) and still, nothing. I guess it sounds like a great app....just doesn't work like a great app.
It's ok
1060WestAddison 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
It's ok
I use this everyday!
FreeRangeMonkey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.8
While this app had some initial problems, they have been fixed. I use it everyday to check my feeds. It syncs with newsgator which means I can check feeds online or at home and everything is synced always. I do wish that you could view your clippings from the iPhone and that there was a way to mark something unread. But other than that, I have no complaints! Great app!!
On track to be the best iPhone RSS reader.
punkassjim 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Funny, in my mind its only real competitor is Newsgator Online.
Downgrade?
robz 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Is there a way that I can downgrade to the older app? I really don't like how this update removes all read feeds. I like the abilty to to back an check. Arg
Love nnw on mac but ...
GuitarToolkit 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Synching via newsgator, which is part of the iphone solution, delays updates on osx badly enough that I've had to disable it
Good but needs some basic features added
commuter999 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Really need to be able to read "read items", this is more important for news bulletin like BART advisories. There are other feed I sometimes do a quick read and go back and read it again. Ability to read clippings is good too otherwise no sense to allow you to save it from the iPhone. I know I can read it with the web or OSX client but should be able to do it on the iPhone too. I understand it is free, but why not make it closer to the free product on OSX.
Generally very well done!
siliconkibou 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Personally, I found NetNewsWire to work generally flawlessly. It is a smidge sluggish with lots of feeds (I have around 50), but we're talking about a split-second hesitation every now and then. I've already read dozens of articles with it, and never felt like I was struggling with the system.
NewsGator for iPhone works better
DJ Rizzo 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
NewsGator web app for iPhone works much better and allows you to do things like mark an individual story as read from the feed list (if this can do it, it's not as obvious as NewsGator's method). Main benefit here is it is nice to be able to have some of the feeds available off line.
Handy but...
iheartbangs 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.10
Nice app and pretty handy! But sometimes the new post don't show up? I have a feed for new apps in the app store.. But they don't show up here.. But when I go to the website.. They are posted.. So why not in the app but they get posted in the sites? Fix this please!!
Need to fix those bugs
OzHeart 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
1.0.9 has been an absolute pain at the moment and have just downgraded back to 1.0.8. 1.0.9 has a bad bug where it won't clear those old read items and at the same time mask any of the new feeds. Really annoying. Otherwise this is a very good software for RSS feeds. Just have to look forward to the next version release.
Good first version
jbessey 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Definitely some room to improve, but a good first release. Better than any of the web interfaces, and I love that I can read items without a network connection. The built-in web browser could use some work (see Twitterific) and stability could be better, but otherwise it's a great experience.
Crashes constantly - STILL!
CherrySoda12435 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.10
At least 3-5 crashes per session, and the article you were reading is gone (marked as read) when you do a (slow) re-open. Great when it works, but constant unpredictable crashes which lose the article I'm reading make it an exercise in frustration.
Great Little App
hdtravel 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I went to the Newsgator Website and created an account and added a bunch of feeds.
Please, add option to disable refresh on start up
iPhoneControl 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.9
Would be nice to have the option to disable auto refresh on start up.
It was a five star app.
cyclingplatypus 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
This was a five star app then the developer started the switch from newsgator to google reader syncing and during that time it became pretty unusable and now that the new version is available the developer has done what so many other developers have done, shafted long time customers. Instead of grandfathering the users that have been there since the beginning and put up with the virtually unusable app and upgrading them to the premium version and introducing the now "premium" version as the ad-supported version and upgrading the version that was previously available to the premium and changing it from free to pay. Now they want current users to pay to remove ads from the iPhone version and pay again to remove them from the desktop version as well, even those who paid for the desktop app before it was freeware. I understand the need/want to make money from apps but when you alienate loyal customers like this it kind if makes us want to seek out different solutions.
Greatness
reallythecrash 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
I thought this app was great before, but with the recent update it has [finally] reinvented itself. Sync to google reader is great, and new collapsing menus are a nice addition. Of the apps that I own, this one has had the best update/changes. I give this one my personal "best improvement award". I suggest bad reviewers give it another shot.
Great update
Depths of One 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
Thanks for the 2.0 update. Syncs with Google Reader nicely and I can read my starred items and mark new ones.
Great update
claudius753 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
A lot of people are complaining about losing their feeds and the switch to Google Reader. If you used NNW then you had to have an account with Newsgator. Did you not get the emails notifying you of the change months ago? I had stopped using NNW both on the Mac and the iPhone a while ago as I had switched to Google Reader. Now I will start using it again since everything syncs and this app is better than trying to use Google Reader in Mobile Safari. And everyone, you don't have to lose your feeds. You can export them on the desktop as an opml file and import them into Google Reader.
2.0 is not an improvement
Ballesta 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
OK, I love the 'Send to Instapaper' feature. That is about it for improvements though - many things went downhill for me: (i) scrolling through a list of items in a feed, each item shows the date and the name of the feed - that is uselless clutter since the same info already sits on top of the screen. (ii) Color coding for read and unread items seems inverted to me - the black read items seem to stand out above the blue unread. (iii) The Feeds list shows a snippet of the newest item in a field - why should the newest item represent the feed? The previous list with just a feed name and an unread count badge worked much better. (iv) where the bleep are my clippings!?! (v) the unread count badge on the App icon doesn't work. (vi) ads. Yes, I can pay for the ad-free premium version, but until the above is fixed, no chance i'm paying.
Made a 5 star App 0 stars
TLinTucson 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
Total crap now. Too bad. Was one of the best news reader apps before the update. I don't give a crap about Google Reader.
