Top 5 RSS news feed readers for iPhone, iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 05:09:11 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Friday, Sep 30, 2011 | Have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and curious which are the best, most must-have RSS feed reading apps you need to check out? We’ve already covered readers in general, from eBooks to comics, but this time we really wanted to focus on RSS news. So if you want to keep your syndication really simple, and yourself up to date with the latest new, read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended RSS feed readings apps for iOS. NetNewsWire is the granddaddy of iOS RSS readers and is still a favorite for many. It syncs with Google Reader, and while in version past that was a laborious process, improvements to both the app and iOS have made it much smoother these days. It’s now been given a whole new codebase and has been picked up by a new team of dedicated developers so Read More
The iPad Is Da/Arrivé/Here/Qui – Here Is How To Start
Calendar16 Fri, 28 May 2010 12:30:14 UTC +00:00
There you go, Apple has officially launched the iPad in 9 new countries today. Well, the iPad actually didn’t wait on Apple to go around the world, and one in four iPads bought in the US has already flown the country by now. Also, an important amount of pre-orders has already been delivered early throughout the week, so the launch is not really that much of a massive event. Anyway, for our international readers who just got their iPad, here is some help for you. Short after unpacking and starting the device, you’re going to feel like you don’t know what to do with it. This feeling is not going to leave right away as it takes a couple days to get used to this new toy. What you’re going to need are apps, and that’s where the fun starts: I would tell you to start with some free apps, so you Read More
The iPhone is home to a lot of great new developers, but it's also the new home for a lot of old-school Mac guys as well; Brent Simmons is of the second kind. His NetNewsWire is a classic Mac app that's been remade for the iPhone, and now the iPad, with the clean, quick simplicity that Simmons' work is known for. We caught up with him right after his "Best Practices for Content Apps" talk here at 360iDev in San Jose, CA this week, and had a quick chat about how the iPad version of NetNewsWire is doing. Jenny Blumberg of NewsGator's developer support team also joined us. Simmons told us both how the iPad version of his app has made more money than you'd expect, and what he's most excited about from Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 announcement last week. Read on for more. (Danke, David!)
10 iPad Apps You Should Buy Right Now
Calendar16 Mon, 05 Apr 2010 16:00:17 UTC +00:00
So, you got your shiny new iPad on Saturday and you’ve done all the basic stuff on it: web browsing, email, video. But now that the awesomeness of that has worn off, it’s time to get some new apps. Here are the ones you should buy first. Imagine holding the entire Netflix instant watch database in your hands. This is it. The app is free, but you’ll need a Netflix subscription if you don’t already have one. IMDb is an iPad-friendly version of the Internet Movie Database. So, while you’re watching movies with Netflix, you can settle arguments about them with this. Free. A perfectly optimized version of ABC’s website, so you can watch the iPad on Modern Family with an actual iPad. (Ironically, ABC currently has a Flash banner on its website advertising this app.) The popular browser-based content discovery extension has its first foray into the mobile app market. Free. Outstanding!
schaw 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a longtime user of the desktop NNW client who was disappointed in the translation to an iPhone app. The iPhone app was slow and essentially unusable with the number of feeds in my subscription list. I took a chance on the new iPad client and found an experience that rivaled the desktop app for speed and usability. The initial sync of some 10,000 items took about five minutes, but subsequent updates have been pretty quick. Navigation is a breeze and the app is very responsive. Top that off with a beautiful, graceful UI, and NNW on iPad is a smash hit. Thanks to Brent for his great taste in app design!
Buggy and expensive
MacKatie 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've paid for NetNewsWire three times now. On the iPhone, iPad and the Mac. Stuck with them despite their horrific and poorly planned transition to a Google backbone, when there are still bugs in the App and syncing. Now I spend another $10 and the iPad app crashes instantly on launch. Not sure why I keep coming back to this company. Least you could have done was upgrade the paid version of your iPhone app to work with the iPad.
Over priced for what it does
The Voyager 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had hope that this would be like the FREE Mac version, but this is a lessor version in my opinion and I am disappointed that it just hooks into google reader. My thought is that this apps value should be between $0.99 and $2.99 considering that you need to use google reader to manage your feeds anyway.
Less awful than the iPhone version but still fundamentally flawed
celkins 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This version is prettier than the iPhone version, but it still has the same flawed handling of unread items. Just as in the iPhone version, items remain in the latest news list after you mark them as read, and even after you relaunch the app. Neither version has any way to view only unread items without having to navigate around items you've already read. Don't waste your money like I did. Look for something with intelligent handling of unread items. (I'm holding out for an iPad version of Reeder, the iPhone version of which is nearly perfect.)
Not bad but overpriced.
NeedApple 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I bought this not realizing the excellent Newsrack reader for iPhone went universal. And the iPad version built in, that I got as a free upgrade, is better than this. This is a perfectly functional reader if you have none, but it should be priced at $5. And if you own newsrack, don't bother.
Not bad
Dsnt 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love the display, which looks great on the iPad. I wish it had was the ability to share and read shared news items, and to view only new items. It seems to pull up the same articles even after they are read.
Much better than the iPhone version
ThatMichael 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not as good as the desktop version, but it's fast and overall not to shabby. Would feel much better about this purchase if the price was more like $5.
Needs Improvement
SilverRubicon 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Could use a little work. Selecting a group/folder does not display all the articles in the group. This causes issues when using the iPad in page view as the article list is a drop down menu and requires you to select the menu and choose another article. The 'star' system is not working. All of my articles are currently marked with a star within NNW but not Google Reader (they shouldn't be). Plenty of room for improvement and at $10, maybe too expensive at the moment.
Gorgeous but not yet perfect
JB SF 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been playing with my iPad all day and this app represents my favorite aspect of the product: consuming news and information. The iPad turns out to be the perfect device for this use as it isn't cumbersome like my laptop and offers much better readability than the small iPhone screen. While Safari demonstrates this extremely well, for my purposes, this app does it better. The screen-shots don't do the usability and convenience of the new interface full justice. This is much closer in all functional aspects to the desktop version than the iPhone app. I knocked off one star simply for the few bugs I've encountered that I'm sure will be fixed in a future update. The pop-up navigation button occasionally disappears when in an article and a few of my Google Reader subs didn't make it to the list (could be a Google issue but they show up in my desktop and iPhone RSS readers). Otherwise this is a great app and well worth the money for anyone who reads a ton of news/blogs from a variety of sources.
Miles beyond iPhone version!!
EmEmEm 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was disappointed with the iPhone version but this is really fantastic. Maybe even better than the desktop! It's really natural and just right for iPad. Well done, guys.
Great, but definitely a 1.0
Mucow 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I made a leap with this one, since I was sorely disappointed with the iPhone version. I'm happy to say this is a fantastic app - I had no trouble syncing with google reader, and the app does a great job of staying out of the way and just presenting feeds in a simple, obvious way. A few minor quibbles: the ability to view only unread items would be fantastic, and I've run into a bug where new items don't immediately appear in the "all items" list, only in their feed list. Assuming these get fixed, it's a great RSS reader that's clean and minimal. $10 was a bit steep, though.
Great app but still no shared items support?
stuDLycaPs 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
The iPad version is beautiful... but $10 and still no shared items support? Every other Google-synced reader has this.
Most Used App
bumpish 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a longtime NNW user on the desktop, and this iPad version is very good. Yes, I have paid for the app three times, but I think people complaining about that are losing sight of both how much work is required to make a version for iPad, and how highly skilled one must be to do that work well. He has succeeded in translating the NNW experience to the iPad. This is the best experience for Google Reader users on the iPad.
A leap of faith that paid off.
jpmarr 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Why is instapaper pro a free update but my premium version of netnewswire a ten dollar update? I was annoyed at the cost of this and other apps. Did I want to spend the money? I decided on a leap of faith and hit the buy button. I have to say, this is a great app. Well worth the money I spent.
Syncing still doesn't work
KeithSN 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Are you guys even testing sync anymore? Yes, it syncs subscriptions but what I care about most is the read counts which are broken between the desktop NNW and the iPad.
3-Time Repeat Customer
GaryWG 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
For me also, this is the 3rd time I've bought NetNewsWire. Perhaps I am just brand-loyal but I stick with NNW because it continues to offer a straightforward, easy news reading experience that places my content first-and-foremost. The desktop version is great because just pressing the space bar sends the reader to the next unread article. The iPad version is almost as good, placing the "next unread" button in the upper right-hand corner. I would give the app another star if there was an even easier way to move to the next unread article or if the the toolbar could be placed on the bottom of the screen instead of the top. Also, I would give it yet another star except for a serious bug (at least with version 1.0) that may or may not be caused by launching the app repeatedly and switching orientations. This seems to cause the app to stop launching altogether and require a re-install from the iTunes store. That's frustrating, but not a show-stopper for an otherwise great app. I expect that the developer will fix this bug asap.
Not bad but crashes and won't open now.
MrSkoTA 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
App started working fine. Little that I used it, it looked decent but now crashes every time I open it, even after restart.
Awesome but crashy
helvetica_ 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love it but it crashes and then refuses to boot forever and I have to reinstall :( very annoying. Please fix! Otherwise amazing
Perfect
Delphaio 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is such a great implementation of Google reader. Much more along the lines of the desktop app than the iPhone version.
Crashes
redskinsfan4ever 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Worked for a day. Now crashes on launch. Reboot didn't help. Also missing features such as show only unread. Next unread button at top is annoying. Hard to see it and your hand covers the screen. For $10, this is a pretty disappointing initial release. Waiting for mobilerss or reeder on iPad.
Please add sharing and the ability to like.
Dis-Cult 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
UI is very nice, j ust needs the ability to like items and share them.
Works, but needs some tweaks
jeffl98 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bought it, ran it, cool. Then it started crashing on open. Tried rebooting the device, same problem. Deleted the app from the iPad then re-installed from iTunes. It works again. Nice overall interface. Built-in browser works well. I don't like the way read articles are displayed. I check in more than once per day and the read articles are displayed interspersed with unread articles. Hiding read articles would be preferable (like Google Reader does). Offline mode works as expected.
Decent...
iphone4e 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was horrified by the usability issues the iPhone client suffers from, but this seems better. Still some oddities, though, like feeds with no unread items constantly being there - why? I'd love for there to be a dedicated UX guy for the NetNewsWire family. I assume the guy who did Postage was supposed to work on that or graphics, if he did the graphics, good job, if he was supposed to do UX...it was a waste. Basically, with all the NetNewsWire apps, you can tell someone was trying, and trying really hard at that, but they're simply also-rans that are only popular until alternatives appear. I wish they'd focus on mitigating the poor UX before worrying about the backend.
good but
demiurgical 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
image caching option please. thanks.
I have installed this app 3 times already
Gh05T R1d3R 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Like the title says and it keeps crashing right now it won't even start this is crap feeddler was free and works better and by better I mean "starts" which is a great feature in an rss reader
Not worth the money
ljmjag 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
There are almost no custom settings. I can't cache my feeds for offline viewing, can't post to Facebook, can't keep feeds which have no new posts on my list of feeds to review. There are other, better and less expensive feed readers for the iPad available. I've used both Feedler and Newsrack and find them both to be a better value with greater customization and features.
Underwhelmed
democrazy 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
For the money, I'm underwhelmed. I had hoped for more customization and at the very least a "mark as read/unread" button like the free Mac version has. In fact, I wish it was more like the Mac version. This seems to have been a quick iPad-ization of the iPhone version without any justification for the much too high price, and I say that even though this is my reader of choice.
Perfect Syncing
IAmJoshBrown 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is the first reader that makes my life/reading easier. I've used the original Mac client for over 2 years and been using NetNewsWire on my iPhone for over a year. Loved the syncing. Now that I have my iPad it's even better. No matter what device I'm sitting in front of all my feeds are perfectly up to date. The sleek sexy design doesn't hurt either. The iPad app did crash a lot on the first version. I sent a Tweet expressing my frustration and within minutes the developers were Tweeting me back asking for crash logs to help me resolve my problem. After version 2 all has been stable. Appreciate the personal touch and quick help. My 1 feature request would be to have the ability to subscribe/unsubscribe to feeds directly within the iPhone and iPad apps. But other than that, one of my most functional new old/new apps.
What a scam
MarkyD 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
First off, you're FORCED to 'log in' with a Google account. That's absolutely stupid. I sincerely hope this app is making a connection directly to Google and not having the NewsGator servers play 'moron in the middle'. Second, YOU CAN NOT ADD FEEDS DIRECTLY. That makes this program absolutely useless to me. The iPad is a STAND ALONE device. Don't make me go other places to add my content. Very stupid. For $10 I expected a REAL program. This is one of the rare times I'm frustrated that I can't get a refund. NewsGator should be ashamed of themselves for scamming people like this. This rating should be a 0 but it won't let me do that. You don't deserve even a 1.
Not yet mature, but very very useful
reppepreppep 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This initial version is missing a few things like marking unread and more control over feeds, but it's already more powerful than the (very good) iPhone version, and the large screen makes reading text easy and pleasant.
Gorgous but flawed
Bazb 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Previously wrote a gushing review of nnw, but man is this app buggy or what. Still has a great ui but news rack is cheeper and with fewer bugs - sorry ---previous review-- Lovely design, smooth as butter to use. Was using a free rss reader and was hesitant about dropping the 10 bucks. But would you spend $10 for safari? Course you would - its worth it for this app, everything is gorgeous from the login page to the well thought out layout.
I love it!
walkerfenton 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm so glad that you took the time to rewrite this app work for the iPad. Its an absolutely beautiful app- and so fast... Well done! One wish- shared items support for Google reader. Thx!
Great; just have a couple wants
squintastic 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Bug Report: In Portrait mode, the Feeds button in the upper-left corner sometimes disappears when you go to a webpage within the app. ---- Update: I have a feature request for the developer. How cool would it be if we could "swipe" to the next article? Similar to those comic book apps and magazine apps. Or even "page turning" like the book apps might be cool. You can't horizontally scroll in any of these RSS articles, so it's not like the swiping feature would conflict with that. Anyway, I think it'd be cool. The "Next Unread" button is a little small and sometimes in a weird spot, depending on how I'm sitting and which hand I have free. It'd usually be nice if I could just haphazardly swipe or turn to the next article (or previous). Speaking of previous, if you don't add swipe or turn gestures, can you add a "Go to Previous" button? ---- Original review: This is a good effort. I wasn't too impressed with the iPhone app, but this is much better. The iPad was made for this kind of app. The app was crashing and even when I turned off my iPad and turned it back on, it still wouldn't load. So I had to remove the app and reinstall, but that wasn't a big deal because all my feeds are stored on the Google server. It's been a few days and I haven't had that issue again, so I think all is well. I noticed I'm not able to save images from the app. I would like to be able to do this without having to open pages in Safari.
Clumsy
ikarus79m 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
It's really hard to put my finger on what I don't like about NetNewsWire for iPad. Clumsy may be a word that comes to mind. There's very few options. I can't hide certain feeds. I cant hide unread items. I can't change font sizes. I can't turn off the annoying "are you sure you want to mark all as unread" warning. But "yes!!!!"' I am sure! For the hundredth time! Yes!!!! Besides these flaws the app seems a little bit sluggish and my finger has to travel way too much across the screen. It's not a terrible app, but it's not good either. And it's definitely much less than I used to expect from NetNewsWire. It's better than the TERRIBLE iPhone app, but that doesn't say much. I used to be a hardcore NetNewsWire fan — still use the desktop app — but even there I'm beginning to lose patience. For iPhone I have switched to "Reeder", a far superior RSS reader in my opinion. Only because they have not yet released their iPad application did I give NetNewsWire another try. I wish I hadn't, because even the iPhone version of "Reeder" is somehow easier to use on iPad than this native application. As soon as "Reeder" is released for iPad, I'll switch. As soon as they release their desktop app, I'll switch. I'm saddened that Brent and team dropped the ball so hard, but I'm glad that others are stepping up to the plate. So long NetNewsWire.
Nailed It
zbrimhall 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
NewsGator got it right. I don't use NetNewsWire for iPhone anymore, but NewNewsWire for iPad is drop-dead gorgeous and works a treat. Next to NetNewsWire for Mac, I think it's the best feed reader out there.
