Evernote

| FREE | Evernote Corp.
Evernote for Android was updated to version 3 way back in the middle of April. At that time, the update was described as being huge. And since then, Evernote for Android has seen some additional updates, including the one that integrated Skitch in August. And while we would like to see every update come described as being huge, this latest is on the smaller side. This latest update comes as a point release to version 3, it arrives as version 3.4 and while it is on the smaller side as compared — it seems to have a few goodies that will make it worth your time to update. That being said, Evernote for Android measures in as a 7.5M file and maintains the requirement of Android 1.6 or later for use. And as it had been in the past — Evernote remains free to download and free to use. However on that note, there is also a Premium account available, which will set you back $5 per month or $45 per year. In terms of this latest update, according to the “what’s new” section in the Android Market, here is what you can expect to see; Otherwise, for those who are new to Evernote, here are some of the key features; And for those considering going Premium, that brings goodies including the removal of the ads (on the desktop apps) along with the ability to upload larger files, top priority support, faster image recognition and the ability to PIN Lock your mobile app. Read More

WidgetLocker Lockscreen

| FREE | TeslaCoil Software
Amazon has had their Android Appstore with the free app of the day, however it looks like they have kicked off a new promotional offering dubbed Geek Week. The Geek Week promotion includes a select group of apps that appear to have a discount of 50 percent or greater. And sure, 50 percent off on a $2 app may not be all that exciting for everyone, however there are some more expensive apps on the list including EasyTether and Root Explorer which normally sell for $9.99 and $3.99 respectively. As to the discount, EasyTether is selling for $4.99 and Root Explorer is selling for $0.99. That being said, in total there are eight apps included in the Geek Week promotion and they break down as follows; All said and done, we realize that all of these apps may not be for every user, especially the SetCPU app which is for users that are rooted. Still, at the same time with deals such as the $24.95 down to $12.99 offering for Xtralogic Remote Desktop they are hard to pass up if you have considered them in the past. Plus, for $0.99 the Backup Everything app is one that most users would most likely benefit from having for those just in case scenarios. Read More

Amazon Student

| FREE | AMZN Mobile LLC
The newly-launched Amazon Student app for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch is pretty similar to the company’s original iPhone app, except it comes with new features that cater specifically to students. Amazon says the free app could help students buy and sell textbooks a lot more easily. The app’s new built-in scanner functionality is front and center as a few of the app’s features rely on it. For example, to get the best price available for a certain book, borrow one from a friend or a bookstore, and scan its bar code by a taking a picture of it. The app would then be able to show you a list of prices for the book. And if you’re the one selling, scan your book’s bar code to see if it’s eligible for Amazon’s Textbook Buyback program – you get an Amazon gift card if it is. Using the app, students could also avail of various perks like free two-day shipping for various products like laptops, video games, TVs, and even toasters among many other things. Read More

Gmail

| FREE | Google Inc.
There are Star Wars geeks, stamp geeks and rubber band geeks. There are also, however, massive amounts of email geeks, since nothing else would still explain why RIM is still in business and the amount of Blackberries still sold or why Facebook’s little email announcement got so much attention. This is just us using a pretty roundabout and not at all related to the subject method of letting you know there’s a new version of the Gmail app in the Android Market, and it comes with a slew of improvements. That email geeks will love and the rest of the world maybe slightly nod at, if that. So, to our understanding, enhanced priority inbox support, a dashing new compose email feature and in-line responses are the major new changes to be expected here. Enhanced priority inbox support means you can see importance markers straight in the main message list, apparently, so… that’s always nice. We’re sure someone somewhere will find this useful, so thanks for Gmail 2.3.2, we guess, Google. You’re alright. Read More

SCVNGR

| FREE | SCVNGR
SCVNGR, the location based Android and iPhone app has been updated to version 3.5, code-named “Vulcan.” This updated version of the game will feature better functionality, not to mention a better, well, everything. SCVNGR 3.5 now offers five new features including a better dashboard, Activity Stream 2.0, Social Maps, commenting and rewards. Most notably revamped is the way the dashboard and the Friend Feed are arranged. The dashboard is rearranged to group various functions into what they are calling “buckets.” These buckets include the Friend Feed, Places, Settings, and other functions. The Friend Feed itself features all the usual activities, but they are now sectioned off into their own groups. Even the Friend Feed functions are now grouped together differently and include the check-in function, challenge function, and photos. The Friend Feed groups are now based on the user’s activity and the place from which he used the Friend Feed functions. The SCVNGR app integrates well with Facebook’s Places application and makes using it even more fun. Both the SCVNGR iPhone and Android OS apps are available free from the Android Market and Apple iTunes; enjoy! Read More

YouTube

| FREE | Google Inc.
While YouTube has always come pre-installed on Android devices-it is a part of Google so of course it does-Google finally updated the app and made it available to download form the Android Market as a standalone version for Froyo 2.2 users. This version of the YouTube Android app offers the same features as the older version, but with a few extras thrown in to make it easier to use. The usual features include the ability for users to search, watch, and upload videos to YouTube. The updated version for Froyo 2.2 offers even more functionality including screen rotation to make the video toggle to full screen when the user rotates his Droid device into landscape mode. In page playback is also available and offers users the ability to read comments while watching videos. New player controls also make it easier to search, download, and watch videos from the Android 2.2 device and the updated user interface is a bit more useful, not to mention nicer to look at. It is also a smart app because it recommends videos based on what the user has watched before. Now, if only this YouTube app were available as a standalone version for all Android users… Read More

Walgreens

| FREE | Walgreen Co.
Walgreen’s is known for making their customers’ lives easier with iOS apps allowing them to chat with a pharmacist and refill prescriptions from their iPhone by entering a prescription number. However, the company’s current iPhone apps do not scan barcodes, so it is entirely possible for someone to enter the wrong number, thus ensuring that when the customer goes to the store to pick up their prescription, it is not available yet. The new Walgreen’s Mobile Android app does scan barcodes, meaning never again will an Android user face a hard time when showing up at the counter to receive his refill. Simply taking a photo of the prescription barcode allows the Walgreen’s Mobile Android app to scan it and order the refill. Also available from this new Android App is the ability for users to order photos, locate Walgreen’s locations offering flu shots, and even search out bargains on merchandise. While the Android app is not yet available from Walgreen’s Mobile website, it is available for download from the Android Market and other third party websites. Read More

AppESP

| FREE | AppStoreHQ
An app platform that tells users what Android apps they want to use? AppStoreHQ has the AppESP Android app for that and it is available free from the Android Market. Using the AppESP “Discovery Engine,” AppESP works by analyzing the most downloaded apps of all Android users, apps used by friends and by using what the company calls, “Zeitgeist,” a media tracking agent. AppESP can then recommend, based on the results of the analysis, which Android apps would suit the AppESP user and it does so every day. Every conspiracy theorist knows what Zeitgeist is, but in Android App land, it is something completely different-sort of. It analyzes various forms of media, such as tweets, Facebook updates, or anything else that mentions specific Android apps. After recommending the Android apps to the user, the user then has a choice of whether to ignore the recommendation or accept it. AppESP changes its recommendations daily based on what the user did the day before. This means that if the user ignores a recommended Android app, AppESP will remember that choice and not recommend similar apps. Read More

There was a bit of good news and bad news for Skype users sporting an Android smartphone yesterday. It seems that Verizon has lost the exclusive on the app and the good news was that a Skype app was available for all in the Android Market. The bad news came for those in the US when they realized that the app was restricted to Wi-Fi. In other words, no 3G calling was allowed. Well, things change and although this is not an official release — Skype for Android is now available with support for 3G. Bottom line here, this app is not going to be found in the official Android Market. Instead the app is coming by way of Droid Forums user Xeudoxus who is perhaps better known in the Android community for DarkEdge and xUltimate. Either way though, the Skype app has been modified and re-uploaded for your downloading (and 3G calling) pleasures. You can grab a copy of the app from his member page over on the Droid Forums. As for getting the app installed. Really not much to worry about. First, go ahead and uninstall the official Skype app, and then download the app either directly to your phone or to your computer. Keep in mind, if you download to your computer you will then need to transfer the downloaded .apk file over to the microSD card in your phone. In terms of actually being able to install the file, simple, just click “Install” to run and install it as you would other sideloaded apps. Of course you do need to make sure you have the the box checked for “Unknown sources” which can be found by going to Menu -> Settings -> Applications. And for those wondering, you do not need to be rooted. Read More

Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back

| FREE | Verizon Wireless
Back towards the end of September, Verizon offered up the official details for the launch of the R2-D2 Edition Droid 2. Being a huge Star Wars fan I naturally wanted the phone, but given I am not eligible for an upgrade (and not willing to pay full retail) I convinced myself that I would hold off and ‘settle’ for the Empire Strikes Back app that was going to be released. App screenshots courtesy: Droid-Life Well, in a little bit of good news, that Empire Strikes Back app is now available for those sporting a Verizon branded Droid smartphone (running Android 2.1 or later). The app is free to download, though there is a $2.99 fee in order to download premium content. And worth noting, the $2.99 fee is not charged through your typical Google Checkout account but instead as a carrier billing from Verizon. There is also no option to get a refund, read on for more details on why you may want a refund. That aside though, the Empire Strikes Back app comes touting features and goodies to include; With that, $2.99 for some live wallpapers, new sounds and a few photos for wallpaper sounds fairly reasonable. Except in this case there is a but. I was all set to go ahead and download the app, and then I starting reading the reviews. Needless to say, they are bad. I will save you the headache of having to read them all, but lets just say that terms such as force close and lock up and uninstall are used often. In other words, downloading is fine for free, but make sure you are willing to potentially lose your $2.99 should you go ahead and make the purchase. As for me, I do not have the app, nor the phone.
