Yeah I know the NOOK Tablet got all the media attention this week, but that doesn’t mean Barnes & Noble forgot about users who enjoy using the Nook app on their Android tablets and smartphones. Quite the contrary, the company has also revamped its Android app, making it look much better while also adding few new features, including: It’s a small update that will definitely help you get more on-the-go entertainment, presuming you like reading ebooks and magazines (with Newsstand) on your Android-based device. And of course, you can still purchase ebooks from your phone or tablet or lend them if you fancy so. The last option is very neat and Nook is the only application that allows the capability (which is something B&N strongly emphasizes). Obviously 1 million apps in comparison to the numbers downloaded (notice they didn’t say “sold”) is fairly paltry but it’s a great start. Crooks There is a known issue with books sometimes not loading on the Android app. Google it. In the event that you purchase a book that will not load, these thieves will not give you a refund and put you through an endless customer service loop without ever offering any serious assistance. When I upgraded to the latest nightly build (214), it works fine. I expect it to work fine under the today-released version 7.1. There are now more choices in the settings such as a "cream" background. The problem is that this app does not work well with all home wireless routers. In fact it will not even allow a download to install on some routers. I don't know what Barnes and Noble has done to their system but even logging into the My Nook Library through their website was blocked. Several weeks back I had no problems with this. The rest of their site remained open. If you take your device to a different hotspot you will be able not only to load the app but also reclaim you books. This seems to be a fairly recent development. My tablet recently crashed and while I was able to get every other app back at home but this one would not load until I went to the public library and used their WIFI. After trying everything I could think of someone suggest that I unplug the router and check if my internet connected to the site. It did. I like the ability to highlight and make notes but although there is a symbol indicating a note, I can't open them when I see them, but have to go back to the table of contents note list, which is awkward. Navigating the shop is very difficult: the categories are too broad, the user reviews are missing or unhelpful, the personalized suggestions are not helpful. I spent half an hour going through the list the other day just to give up. Then i got on the kindle book store for the first time and immediately found a book to read. If I hadn't already invested hundreds into nook books I would switch immediately. The 3.1 update tries to address these issues and does show promise, but does not go far enough. There are more categories but that just makes it worse when all the books are miscategorized! The fonts and margins are better but still broken. I then went to the website to re-download my books and they have been deleted from my account. Troy I just installed the latest update on my HTC Flyer tablet. It deleted all of my books. I tried to download my books again, but I can't sync to my Nook library anymore. I get the error message, "Problem occurred while trying to synchronize library. Please try again later." I restarted my Flyer twice and tried again but still got the same message. I tried to go to shop, but got another error message, "Internal error: Exception executing the command." Never had this problem until recently. Very poor. 3/25 - the latest version STILL won't open books already bought from bn, citing a bullcrap credit card problem. A new cc "feature" causes this. The content was already purchased, and my credit card is up to date. It is a major security flaw being forced to enter cc details into every android device you own instead of bn using whats on file. I think it is in all of them but most clearly visible in the night lay out (white text on a black background) – a thin bright line that runs along the right and bottom edges and completely distracts from the text layout when you are reading. When turning a page, the edges are choppy and the whole feel and look is ugly. Please take a look at the Google Play Books app for a better way and implement it. Numerous times I have been shut out and had to reinstall to access my purchases, more than once with a message about credit card issues. First, I have excellent credit. Second, I ALREADY PURCHASED THESE TITLES! No credit card necessary! I'm deleting Nook from all my devices. (droid x) Nickname unavailable This is the second worst e-book reader I've ever used. Page change sweeps are usually misinterpreted and change to the previous page rather than the next one. Un-bookmarking a page is difficult, and frustrating. After the reader is closed, it reopens to your bookshelf instead of to the book you were reading. Text selection is more difficult than anywhere else I've encountered in the Android world, and that says a lot. All in all, this is a painful application to use. Displays text, you can read it, turn pages, and so on. Beyond that, stick with an actual Nook instead. Yes, you can take notes on the app. Can you easily view them? Nope. Not even close. Can you send them to people or export them? Absolutely not. At least, I couldn't find out if it was possible. The support page only linked to an FAQ. No manual could be found. The application is almost purposely flawed, probably to encourage Nook Color and Tablet purchasing. Brett Assuming you have Google Play, find Nook in the store and there should be a check box above the rate meter to allow updates. Make sure it is un-checked. So far it's a good app but then again, I just started using it. Robert Believe it or not, I traded in my Blackberry for an Android based phone primarily to get the Nook app. We are die hard NOOK fans in all it's forms, but awhile back B&N stopped supporting the Blackberry. When my Verizon renewal came due I traded in for the Samsung Stratoshere, rushed home, and downloaded this app. It only took a few minutes for my library to become available. The look is excellent and movement through the books is smooth BUT the app does not seem to remember what book I am reading. Every time I open the app, it takes me to the library and I have to scroll through to reload the book I am reading. It isn't a major deal breaker, but it is irritating. Scroll through the reviews and it becomes clear that I'm not the only one that finds this a disappointment. I was recently frightened that I had lost all my save notes and highlights for all the books I had downloaded, as the update apparently wiped the library of all my books even though they had all been downloaded to my tablet already. Though all it took was an internet connection to get my library back to normal. B&N scared me good there, though, I see no harm so no foul. Nook is still waaay better than Kindle. I get to the screen where i can choose my book, well when i do, it loads, then it will vibrate once..then again and then go back to the main screen. Carmen I don't know what the hell happened to this app. One day it worked, then there was an "update" and then it doesn't work anymore. It was more like a "downgrade"!! I'm really disappointed in Nook. I gave my Nook Color to my husband since I got a tablet, I figured I could download the Nook app and still enjoy my books. Boy was I wrong!! So guess what, I switched over and downloaded the Kindle app and it works like a champ. I recommend that you switch to Kindle and don't download the Nook app. Sharon update sucks! Deborah I love being able to read from my Android phone, but it is extremely aggravating to have to uninstall and reinstall the app in order to be able to download preordered books once they become available.
