Description

Note Taker HD is a serious app for writing handwritten notes, diagrams, etc., on the iPad. It can shrink your writing so you can easily fit a lot of text on a page. You can read the reduced-size "ink" as if you had written those letters with a very fine pen.

Pages are flexibly organized by tags, date/time last modified, favorites, and more, with a scrolling list of thumbnail ima... Read More

How an iPad Speeds Reporting from NASCAR's Pit Row
Calendar16 Fri, 25 May 2012 18:28:00 UTC +00:00
Dave Burns has been covering stock car racing from pit road for seventeen years, including spending the past twelve covering NASCAR's premiere Sprint Cup Series. These days he's a Pit Reporter for ESPN, covering Nationwide and Sprint Cup practices, qualifying, and races, all over the course of a single weekend -- every weekend -- for months at a time. Working the pit lane means dealing with dozens of teams, drivers, mechanics, and more; all while keeping viewers informed across hours of live programming. When he started covering NASCAR for NBC in 2001, Burns developed a sophisticated note-taking system that "catered to our programming, the way my brain worked, and portability." He started with half-sized legal pads and advanced to custom-bound pads that he would print and bind at home. He has since accumulated hundreds of binders filled with information. "I have boxes and boxes of notepads that impressed the crew chiefs Read More
Two of the things that enchanted me most at Macworld | iWorld 2012 was the Jot stylus and a preview of Readdle's Remarks app. I've spent the past week looking at different note-taking apps to use with my new Jot Pro while waiting for Remarks to come out. The preview held not one, not two, but three TUAW writers enthralled as the Readdle folks showed it off. Does it live up to the hype? It really does. I have two specific tasks for any note-taking app for the iPad - it should handle the hand drafts I do of comic strips, and it should handle a PDF workflow I've developed for my day job. In both areas, it excelled. In handwriting mode, Remarks edges out Note Taker HD in responsiveness when it comes to using a stylus. It's able to keep up with my quick cursive without the stylus petering out, Read More

Great Product but Needs Multiple Page Support
KenInSeattle 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is an extremely well thought out product produced by a great developer. I saw the demo video and immediately said, "I gotta give this a try!" Within a few minutes, it was clear that my iPad had just increased a hundred fold as a practical business device because I sit in a lot of meetings and take a lot of notes. Also, the ability to tag notes means that I can sort through notes easily-- and PDF export makes it easy to backup and work with others. My only request (and it is an important one) is to add an obvious button at the bottom for adding additional pages to the same note. I take pages and pages of notes at a sitting and it becomes impractical to have one page per file. Add that feature and I'd give it six stars out of five.
The most Innovative note-taking app.
Fuzzyguy 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
It's an excellent approach to the inherent problem with the iPad, which is lack of proper stylus support. This is undoubtedly a very unique solution and all praises to the developer for coming up with the idea. And given that this is the first version so I hope they refine and update to make it even better, specially the note organization, if they can introduce a folder system for storing notes then one can make different folders and subfolders for organizing the notes. Again, this is a great app and as long as there is no real stylus support this is our savior. Thanks.
Exactly what I was looking for
Arpad9 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
I first found the iphone app when looking for a simple note taking app. There are two typs of note taking apps: 1. Type and organize 2. "Doodle" or electronic ink. The type apps have the obvious problem of the soft keyboard and they don't allow you to write naturally. Taking notes at a keyboard is never as good as with a pen. This is the best electronic ink app I've found. Many of them allow you to write on the screen but without a decent input interface - your writing comes out as if you were writing on a computer screen - or like a 3 year old. This one has a great input interface that allows me to write in my natural handwriting with my finger. I can only imagine how much better it will be when I order the stylus. While it has become one of the most used apps on my ipad (I started with the iphone app at 2x), the problem with this app, is that it lacks many of the features of the "type and organize apps." I'll just leave it at this: while I love this app, here are some things it sorely needs: - A good organizing/filing system. - Select and move or copy and paste. Once you've done your writing, the only way back is erase and rewrite. This can be a major annoyance and doesn't allow you to rearrange a page. - The features from the iphone app of the same name (email/transcribing). - Export / import. Wouldn't it be great to write on top of existing images or (as another app does) pdf's?!! - Would handwriting recognition be too much to ask? Imagine... Overall very well done and well worth the price.
Makes Hand writing on iPad realistic option
Jonathon P 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is a well-designed app that makes it possible to hand write notes on the iPad. While there are several apps that let you write by hand, you can't seriously use them. This app shrinks your writing as you write and enables me to write out long notes almost as well as on paper. My only request is for line smoothing to make the handwriting look better.
Best note taking app for iPad
Andrew Eick 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
I've tried a few other iPad note taking apps, and this by far the best. Although I have the app on my iPhone, it really needs the added space of the iPad to be useful. The problem with other apps is the issue that you rest your palm on the iPad while writing. Your palm print smudges your notes and confuses the writing. Not so with this app. Due to the 'mini writing area', you can comfortable rest your palm on the iPad and it does not interfere with your notes. No need to "palm print canceling technology" The auto-advance feature took a bit of getting used to. I would like it better if the team moved the "manual advance" button above the 'return button' (since my stylus is already next to return anyway. Another issue I noticed is that every note is one page. A 'book' metaphor would help -- where every project has a book, and every meeting is several pages of notes. I've only used the app for two full day meetings, but it worked great with my stylus to take notes electronically rather than in my notebook. Highly recommended
Excellent!
StupidForeigner 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
Awesome. The iPhone version was a neat toy, but this is a real productivity boost. I second the multi page notebook with an add page button request. That would make it perfect. Update: I've now played with it for a few hours and its still great. The eraser that automatically turns off is genius. Using the bottom inking mode eliminates the "can't rest my hand" issue that all the other apps have. This app has now officially banished Penultimate from my home screen. Suggestions: 1. Multipage notebooks and an option to automatically go to the next page when hitting return in the last line. 2. Blue and red ink options would be nice. There's plenty of room in the UI for them. 3. More output options would also be nice, for example opening the PDF in an external program like GoodReader. Direct upload to Dropbox would be a dream, but I don't know how feasible that is...
Best note taking app by far, but needs voice record/notebooks
CTStudentNurse 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
I can't express how much I love this app. I've tried every single note taking app available for the iPad to date, but none come close to the ease of note taking capability that this program offers. It works well with just your finger, but with a pogo sketch stylus it works even better. I would have to say that speed of writing using the pogo is on par to that with traditional paper and pen. I just wish that it had a few more features that some of the other apps offer, such as notebook capability and voice record. Voice record is a must for me in my lengthy 8 hour lectures, and until multitasking becomes a feature on the iPad OS I will need this functionality built into my note taking program. Also, the option to save pages into a dedicated folder/notebook would be ideal. I have noticed with other notebook style programs that the lag becomes a major issue as soon as you start to accumulate multiple pages. I think that is partially why this app works so well, providing minimal lag experience. However, I would think that the response rate would be preserved if the app allowed you to later combine all the relevant pages into various labeled folders for easy organization. This app will definitely replace my notebooks for school. I just hope I don't have to purchase an external digital voice recorder so that I can use this program in place of some others. Please add this voice functionality!!! It would make this app very tough to beat, and definitely worth more than the current $4.99 price tag. I look forward to future updates.
Handwriting Notepad That Works!
Modemax 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
Very innovative and clever features make this a great note taking app using handwriting, which is for me, significantly faster than typing on the iPad keyboard. This, so far, is the only handwriting app that does not exhibit lag when writing which allows for natural and fast handwriting. A must for a notebook app. Well Done! Wishlist: Please add the paper background to the PDF when emailing. Add more paper backgrounds. Add different colored inks (red and blue).
Excellent ad-hoc note taking tool
Illuminarti 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
Tried several apps and settled on this one - love the innovative user interface; fairly easy to get used to the zoomed writing area feature, especially with auto advance and newline button. Going to try it with a stylus as well, although the finger-based entry works well, I find. Looking forward to seeing how it develops - colored ink, multi-page documents etc would make this even more useful.
The best note app on the iPad
annieb443 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
This app is certainly the best note-taking app on the iPad. This app allowed me to take two full pages of notes during a meeting this morning. The ability to rest your palm at the bottom of the iPad while writing gives this app an edge over competitors. Adding notebook support, and the option for text entry would make this a 5 star app for me. Line smoothing would also be great.
best note taking app
dvmrp 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is excellent, best note taking software in iPad I ever tried. It'd be even great if I can change the color of the pen.
Finally
MsPossum 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
Finally an app to write notes with at meetings on my iPad! I am using this with a Pogo Sketch and so far so good (Not so good results for my left-handed friend however). I have not used this enough yet to have any suggestions for updates. Hopefully a multi-page option is available as that is a necessary option. Another great option would be the ability to arrange notes into notebooks like some of the other apps out there. Otherwise this is definitely the best note-taking iPad app out there. You will not be disappointed.
The best I've tested, but writing with one's finger is still weird
BTHathaway369 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
I've tried several of the note taking apps and have to say this is the most usable of the bunch. I took to it quickly and the Edit 2 mode is fairly intuitive. I won't harp on the multi-page aspects. Enough has been said and I do not doubt those features will come soon. My only request is that in Edit 2 mode, one could tap the right edge of the page in the writing window to generate a carriage return. So often I have to reach all the way right to hit the return button and then all the way left to start writing. Seems as though there's more motion involved than necessary but it's not a big deal by any means. Bottom line. I've tried four other note takers and have deleted them all. This one I will keep and use. P.S. Wish these apps could do something with my handwriting. Still looks terrible! :-) P.P.S. The star rating will improve once the app can automatically organize pages into notebooks. Managing individual pages is a cumbersome design limitation.
Great Design, Soon to Be Great for Lecturing
EMiPad 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is a thoughtfully designed app. Dan responded within 8 hours to my question regarding VGA support. VGA is scheduled for the next update. I teach a large hall lecture course. With Note Taker and VGA, I can finally leave my tablet at home. Note Taker + iPad = all the benefits of a tablet with none of the OS boot wait time.
Interesting solution to writing on the iPad
manatee87 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is the best solution I have found to writing on the iPad. It is useful for taking meeting minutes and class notes. It does not turn the notes into searchable text, but still -- it has allowed me to replace my paper notebooks with the iPad. It takes a while to get used to entering text in the box, and aligning text when continuing a line, but it becomes easy after a while. It also takes a while to get used to moving the text box around on the screen, to enter text around drawings. Still, it's the best solution I've found for taking notes on the iPad. I recommend it!
Good start
fungusamongus 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
Works well but detailed view writing performance is very slow compared to iphone version. It is frustrating and laggy - seems like it should be smoother on this faster platform. Writing is not fluid - curved letters drawn at a normal pace end up as a lot of line segments. Please fix this -it is annoying.
So cool
tbreiss 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
The auto advance feature really makes this app. I was able to take notes at my meeting this morning just like I was writing on a note pad. Almost. My only issues are those that have been mentioned by others. I get not wanting to do notebooks but rather use tags so that pages can be in more than one "notebook"' etc... But I would like to then have "multi-page" pages so that all my notes from one meeting could be in one document. Creating another page is definitely more disruptive than turning a new page in a real notebook. In the other note taking apps you can just tap to get a new page and continue on. Add some pen options, not too many, but it would be nice to emulate the 10 color multi-pen that a friend had in college. And maybe a hi-liter.
A great app
Drakfyre 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
I bought this mostly because I felt I owed at LEAST $5 to the creator of the spreadsheet. I wasn't planning on using it. That being said, I love this app now. It's great for diagraming and is very intuitive.
The best
mcnearcj 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is the best note taking app for the iPad. I'm starting summer classes next week and can't wait to put this to use. Pair this with a pogo sketch stylus and it's even more amazing.
Great App!
Drkazndmon 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is the best note taking app in the app store as of now. The only thing missing is a notebook feature to organize all the notes. It would also be nice to have a way to make a new page after you are done with your current page without going back to main menu. With these two features, this app would be perfect!
Please add folder/notebook support
Wanting it to work!! 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
This is an amazing app and has almost eliminated my need to carry around a notebook. Please consider adding folder support. I typically create 5-12 pages of notes a day and just having individual pages can be a bit cumbersome and unorganized, being able to group pages of notes together in a folder or notebook (sub- notebook or sub folder) would be so helpful. Also consider moving or hiding the erase button, being down in the lower right corner it is easy to trigger the erase button if you rest your hand/wrist on the screen. I thank this app has amazing potential and could definitely be made into a 5 star app...it is so close now. Thanks for the time and development!
Feature requests
Turist_Omer 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
Very very nice application. But please let me create separate notebooks beforehand. Adding tags to each page is not effective. I should be able to choose a notebook or a topic, and keep adding to that, and possibly print it to pdf as a whole. Then I will increase my rating. Another way for me to increase my rating is for you to allow me to use the keyboard also. Writng formulas by hand is easy, but typing is not. Also, the font smoothing idea for the shrunk versions is very nice, please also implement it. Thanks
Best hand writing app
Scott Baldwin Photography 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
I have tried several hand writing apps but was disappointed in them. This one has a better and more flexible interface and I am very happy with the results.
The best I've seen
Ricci1989 5.0 stars Version: 2.1
This app is clearly the best note taking app for the iPad. Having a secondary window at the bottom of the screen for writing allows me to rest my hand. The ability to zoom-in then write allows for smaller script that looks well formatted. Although it's great, this app would be even better if writing smoothness was like Penultimate. But even without that, it's still the best note taking app out there.
Best handwriting note taking app as of 5/18/10
Tom_H_Chicago 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
If you want to get rid of your paper notebooks, get this app plus a Pogo Sketch stylus. I have tried all the note taking apps as they've come out. This is the best so far. Not quite as smooth a flow to writing as Penultimate (my previous favorite), but better design to get more writing on a page and a bit better organization of your work than Penultimate. What Bricklin needs to do to make this a five star in next release: 1) a second level of grouping/categorization - you can use Tags to get one level of categorization, but the fact that this app just creates single pages screams for grouping of pages into multi-page notebooks or alternatively a 2nd tier of tagging. My use case is a consultant who works on multiple clients, does multiple projects at a client and during that project, will take multiple pages of notes for meetings that happen on particular days/times. Think of students taking multiple classes with several lectures per class and several pages of notes per lecture. 2) ability to import content - e.g., PDF file from my previous note taking app so I can keep all my notes in one place - also would be great for annotating other content (e.g., a Powerpoint someone sends me to review - I can take into Keynote which won't let me save changes to PPT format, so would be great if I could annotate the PDF that Keynote does let me save) 3) option to turn off the thumbnail - pretty worthless and ugly 4) move the Advance button to the right of the handwriting window 5) Page Actions should have an e-mail option (now buried in settings) 6) option to make the e-mail default subject line be the name of the page 7) option to change the thickness of pen
