Ford has joined forces with National Public Radio to bring NPR news programs and stations to select Ford vehicles with Ford SYNC AppLink. Since SYNC is powered by voice control, drivers can listen to NPR’s radio stations without even having to glance at their smartphone. The updated NPR app includes support for SYNC AppLink, which can then be set up in the car. Ford cites a growing trend in Internet radio usage as one of the motivations for this new in-car tech. Using cell phones to listen to online radio has grown 5 percent in the last year and 49 percent in the last three years, according to Ford. “With AppLink, drivers can manage smartphones through the in-car audio system or via the power of voice while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road,” said Doug VanDagens, Global Director of Connected Services at Ford. TUAW's Daily iPad app: NPR 2.0
Calendar16 Fri, 08 Jul 2011 16:30:00 UTC +00:00
NPR has rolled out a rather hefty update to its venerable and well-liked iPad app. As before, the app is kind of a digital magazine that mirrors the content mix on NPR, with world and U.S. news, the arts and music features. The iPad app is more fully featured than the NPR app for the iPhone, which contains mainly news. NPR does have a separate music app for the iPhone. You can listen to any NPR station live, and also access dozens of NPR programs like Car Talk, All Things Considered and Fresh Air on demand. Programs play in the background, so you can exit the app and use your iPad while still listening to the content of your choice. The app has an AirPlay icon, but it was dimmed. I'm not sure what is going on there. My other AirPlay-enabled apps worked fine, and I can find no settings on Read More
Instacast: The ultimate podcast manager for iPhone?
Calendar16 Tue, 05 Apr 2011 20:40:18 UTC +00:00
Instacast doesn't have the world's best interface, but it's a pretty awesome podcast manager all the same. I love podcasts. When I'm in the car, I like nothing better than to queue up shows like "This American Life," "Wiretap," and "A Prairie Home Companion," to name just a few. Of course, if I forget to sync my iPhone for a few days, I won't have the latest episodes on tap. The podcast manager (if you can call it that) that's built into iOS doesn't support streaming, and I can download new shows only over Wi-Fi. Enter Instacast, a podcast manager that not only overcomes these shortcomings, but also makes it easy to find other podcasts I might like. It accomplishes this latter feat by way of the Add screen, which is divided into Popular, Just Added, and Genres sections. There's also a search option, and a handy iPod button for subscribing Read More

Posted 10/04/2010 at 12:36pm | by Andrew Hayward Each new iPhone has offered fresh and fantastical ways to improve your daily life, but the epic tag-team of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 deliver the greatest set of tools and features to date. With the introduction of FaceTime video calls, multitasking, and the high resolution Retina display, the iPhone 4 has moved even further away from being just a powerful phone and web-surfing device. Between the built-in features and the hundreds of thousands of options in the App Store, not to mention a few key accessories, the iPhone 4 can be figuratively formed and changed to fit your daily needs, whether you’re planning your daily commute, knocking out items on your to-do list, or simply looking to try a new restaurant. Like many media companies, National Public Radio is scrambling to prepare an app in time for the iPad’s April 3 launch. But the standoff between Apple (AAPL) and Adobe has prompted NPR to take on another engineering project at the same time: It is building a version of its Web site designed specifically for the iPad. So if all goes as planned, iPad users who want to listen to NPR programming will have a couple choices next month. They can: I’ve heard about a handful of other big publishers who are altering some but not all of their Web sites to create iPad-optimized versions. That’s what The Wall Street Journal–like this Web site, the Journal is owned by News Corp. (NWS)–is doing, for instance: Visitors to the newspaper’s front page will see an iPad-specific, Flash-free page. But those who click deeper into the site will eventually find pages that haven’t been converted. Read More
Appular: From marketing/PR company to iPhone app publisher
Calendar16 Fri, 12 Mar 2010 10:43:03 UTC +00:00
Appular, which is a marketing and PR firm specialized in promoting iPhone titles, is taking the “publisher route.” What this means is that in some cases — when they like the application/game — they may act as a publisher and share the revenue generated from the app sales with the developer. As a result, their initial fees will be waived. To help with this plan, they brought former Freeverse CFO, Dino Decespedes, as their new Director of Publishing, on the heels of ngmoco’s purchase of Freeverse. Initially, he will be working with select developers by implementing proper business and marketing strategies, to go along with their app and game concepts. In case you wonder, Appular helped promote such iPhone apps as NPR News, Finger Physics, Simplenote, Flick Fishing, and many more. And now they are interesting in hearing from developers with upcoming apps and games, and will evaluate possible partnerships on Read More

I have been a huge fan of NPR's News app [iTunes link] since it was initially released in August, and so seeing the following item was especially heartwarming. Right before Christmas, NPR published a story on how a Los Angeles doctor utilized the NPR app to obtain the information needed to get the right stroke treatment drug for his sister. Tanya Gill, a Chicago art instructor, collapsed while shopping, and word went out to her family members that she had been rushed to the hospital. Her brother, Dr. Joe Hastings, told his wife about his sister's illness, who commented that it sounded like a story she heard about stroke treatment on NPR. Hastings accessed the story on the NPR app and e-mailed it to the rest of the family. He then contacted the doctors treating Gill and urged them to utilize the drug, tPA, mentioned in the story. Gill has since Read More

There are so many news applications in the app store that it is sometimes difficult to figure out which one is the best. NPR News may or may not be the “best”, but it’s certainly one of the most useful and unique. Its strength comes in the form of radio, featuring live news broadcasts from all across the country. With this feature, NPR has leg up on the competition. The top stories occupy the front page of the app upon startup. A photo accompanies each story, but more importantly, most articles have an audio clip attached. This audio version of the story is a high quality, detailed report of the article. This is especially useful while driving or riding a bike. Usually, news applications only contain written articles or video clips, both of which require your visual attention. The NPR audio clips are perfect for driving and any other situation where Read More

The Week In iPhone Apps: Google Who ? [IPhone Apps]

Still, with this? Well, luckily there's plenty of other stuff to tide us over until the Google Voice fiasco resolves itself. Like zombies! And weddings, and exercise, and soundscapes, and urban art, and political activism, and jokes, and, and, and... The Onion Microfiche Reader: It's from the Onion, so it's pretty much guaranteed not to be not funny, but! For all the neat microfilm-esque presentation, this thing doesn't actually have any articles—just a bunch of those jokes-in-a-headline that the Onion is so good at. Still entertaining though. NPR News app updated, improved
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Sep 2009 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
The NPR News app [iTunes link] is quickly becoming a jack of all trades for news junkies and those wanting a quick fix of their favorite NPR program. The latest version, 1.1, adds sharing of stories via Facebook, Twitter and e-mail. You can now pause radio programs, as well as fast forward and rewind them. Finding local stations is easy by using the iPhone's location services, or you can choose to listen to just about every NPR station in the country. The news part of the app works pretty quickly on a 3G network, but I find the pop-up ads at the bottom irritating. I don't think there are enough news stories on screen at once, an issue it shares with the AP News app. The NPR app has been popular since the moment it was released, and the developers have continued to be responsive and add features on a regular Read More
NPR updates its iPhone app
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Sep 2009 07:16:11 UTC +00:00
NPR has updated its iPhone application, giving users more control over audio, images and sharing. Here’s what’s new in the version 1.1: In a nutshell, it’s a must-have for every NPR fan. AppStore link is here. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time should do. In addition to his interests in mobile phones, Dusan also loves to experiment with the latest web and mobile 2.0 services. The idea of accessing and managing your information from any device no matter where you are simply amazes him. Whether it's an online to-do list, note taking service or a video sharing social network, he's there to try it out. He Read More

Would Be 5 Stars if 4 Big Flaws Were Fixed
xyz1 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been using NPR Addict for several months and although I really liked the app, it soreley needed a playlist with a Play All capability. I was very happy to see that the NPR News app included a playlist. The playlist Play All works great but unfortunately the app has four big flaws compared to NPR Addict. The first is the inability to pause a story and resume playback from the pause (only option is to stop play and start over). The second is the inability to fast forward or rewind within a story. The third is an incomplete story list. For example, the NPR website and the NPR Addict app show the same stories available for yesterday's Weekend Edition Saturday broadcast. NPR News for some reason lists only about half of the stories. The fourth flaw is a long delay for stories to show up. New show episodes that have been available using NPR addict for 6 hrs still have not shown up in NPR News. If these four flaws were fixed in a new release I'd give it 5 stars.

Needs a PAUSE button. If you stop a story you have to start over at the beginning. Also FF & Rewind would be useful.
Awesome but flawed
Freston 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been waiting for this application since I first bought an iPhone, and it's a brilliant first step. Access to individual programs, home stations, and the web-based text summations all work like a charm with one major flaw: no pause function or capability to seek within the track. I understand this isn't probably going to ever be available for the live radio station following, but it really is a necessity for the individual program replay. Also, the text news function occasionally sticks and one ends up reading old news. If those two issues are fixed, this will probably be my most used app.
Needs some added features
goldensock 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Pretty amazing app! The interface is attractive and really easy to use. I would like to see an update that has a "pause" feature for the audio playback, that will allow you to pause audio, and resume playback from where you left off. As of now there is only "stop", which means you have to start the audio stream from the begining if you have to exit the audio or pause for any reason. Other than that, well done!

I just downloaded the NPR app and listened to a few news stories and read some others. Great app, although I wish I could save some stories as podcasts and/or review stories so that I can get stuff recommended. My new fav app.
Comparison with NPR Addict
Anwar The Bionic 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I use these NPR apps to listen to the on-demand stories. I don't use them to listen to live shows. This is a comparison between the "on demand" features of "NPR News" and "NPR Addict".

I tried the Public Radio tuner for so long and it cannot compare to this one! Way fewer dropped streams, ability to add playlists of news is awesome, and reading articles while listening to news is also a huge plus. Great app, I've been debating when to donate to NPR, but since this app arrived, I've decided they deserve my money now. A+
Not Worth the Hassle
Chatty Momma 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I downloaded this app today after a positive review on Mashable and it has nothing but problems as far as I'm concerned. It looks great and is easy to navigate, but once you read one story and try to pull up another the only thing that changes is the headline. No matter how many stories I tried to access, I was stuck on just one. If you start the app over again it works for one story too. Lame!
Medialytics Tracking engine....thanks.
sols99 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was seriously in love with this app until I discovered you use the Medialytics Tracking engine. How unfortunate...NPR is the source I use for all of my news but I am seriously dissapointed by your choice to use the Medialets ad framework. Get rid of it! No usage statistics!!
Privacy Invasion Warning
ghendar 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Uses Medialets which, among other invasive things, tracks your physical location, usage patterns and even what sex and age you are across applications. Shame on you NPR!
Spyware
Guitarsenal 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The second I saw the notice about installing tracking software I quit the app and uninstalled it. No way. No how...
Still has 2 major flaws
Anwar The Bionic 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
The v1.1 fixed some major problems. However, the update did NOT fix 2 other major problems that keep me from using this App: 1) The story list only displays a few stories. For example, All Things Considered only displays 14 stories for 9/11/09. There were actually 21 stories for the 9/11/09 show. 14 stories are available PERIOD. What if I wanted to listen to some stories from 9/10/09 or earlier that week? I can with the "NPR Addict" iPhone app, but not with this official one. I need to be able to load more older stories. On NPR.org, I queue up several stories from different days (I can't listen every day, so I listen to stories from different days at once). This isn't an option with this NPR app. 2) The story list cuts off the story's title. So for example, for the 9/11/09 show: -"Sen. Levin Seeks Major Changes in Afghan War" shows up as "Sen. Levin Seeks Major Changes..." -"Post-Sept. 11, Colleges Take On Law Enforcement Role" shows up as "Post-Sept 11, Colleges Take On..." I want to be able to see the full title on the story list. I see two options to do this: let the title continue onto the next line, or allow us to view the story list in landscape mode. With Landscape mode, screen width would be 4.5 inches instead of 2.4 inches. Until these 2 problems are fixed, I can't use your great NPR News iPhone App. I'll keep it downloaded so I can monitor when it is updated next, but I'll still be using "NPR Addict" for my mobile NPR news. !!! Special note !!! Shows such as Marketplace, This American Life, and A Priarie Home Companion are NOT NPR shows, and therefore are not part of this NPR app.
Would be the coolest app. if it worked.
GENMTV 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
I love NPR and I love the idea of this app. but it quits out of the program everytime I go to delete or marked as read the articles in my playlist. Could not figure out why so I removed the app. from the Iphone.

Highly Irritating
Jon Land 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
The playlist feature would be great if it worked. Whenever an article gets outdated the whole app crashes. I can't believe this hasn't been fixed yet.
Still cannot post to Twitter
Oscar F. 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
Even with this new update, the app still thinks I'm offline when trying to post to Twitter. Sharing via email or Facebook works fine, although it should post as a link to my FB wall like every other app instead of changing my status. I'm uninstalling this for now.
Brilliant!

KombuchaKid 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Great Great GREAT app. was reading some of the other 1 star reviews and can only say that if you don't want your location to be known, then you should not carry a GPS phone...idiot. lots of apps use this and it is for filtering content. I really doubt NPR is trying to kill you (which not be such a bad idea for the gene pool now that I mention it...)
Love it, but...
DG. 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
NPR has one of the best news/radio apps out there--well let's face it, the only real news AND radio app. I love the interface, the approach to ads, playlists (fixed!), and quality of product. My only issue is that of the news compiling every time I open the app without removing the old top stories. I still have news articles from months ago on the list, every article ever loaded since originally downloading the app. While it may be nice for some who enjoy being a human library of current events long past, it would be nice to get rid of them. Am I missing some basic 'clear cache' button?
Playlist bugs fixed!
Modug 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
This app is finally worth downloading if you like to listen to NPR! They have fixed the crashing playlist bug. Articles still load slowly though.
Where is the clear old stuuf?
HAMsmoke 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
We get great news on this app. But it stays there forever - or so it seems. I deleted this app before because I held a few hundred "top stories", but some were so old - it's simply not news anymore. If you could figure out how we can clear playlists, you can certainly let us clear the saved article cache. Or do it automatically every 2 or 3 days. Really.
Steps Back
Cragly 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.2
A good step, but NPR still doesn't quite 'get' internet delivery of their content - if you want to time shift their big programs, you have to do it piece-by-piece, and attached to each story are TWO advertisements for their underwriters. So if you make a playlist of 9 or 10 stories, you hear 18-20 ads, the same two over and over again. NPR has to pay the bills, but the online experience really shouldn't be worse than the old radio model when the whole point is that it could be so much better.
Great app for news junkies!
JS.Fortnight.A 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.3
Works great since app update (01/04/09), one of my first and favorite apps for my phone.
Japan
jadesmrf 3.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I live in japan so it's really nice to be able to listen to my fav radio stations on long train rides or at home. However, You should be able to close the app and do other things on your phone while listening, like iPhone music player. Also if the wifi is interrupted I lose my place and have to start the program over. This happened every time I was listening to radio lab. :(
