New York Times updates iPad app to stop constant crashing
Calendar16 Tue, 28 Dec 2010 19:15:00 UTC +00:00
It's about time. Ever since the NYTimes for iPad app replaced the lame Editors' Choice app, it has been tough sledding trying to read the news. It often took a long time to load, and then before displaying a single story, it crashed. I reinstalled the app, and that made things better for a while until the crashes returned. I wasn't the only one having trouble. The app store reviews of the previous version were brutal. The app was updated over the holidays, and I'm happy to report it is far more stable. I can actually read the news without having to constantly relaunch the app. The only downside I experienced was I had to log in again. If I had been commuting or on a trip and didn't have that info it would have been a pain. The New York Times app is free, but in early 2011 it will Read More
Kobo Launching New Magazine and Newspaper eReader Service
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Nov 2010 13:04:40 UTC +00:00
Kobo expands its eReader service to include magazines and newspapers. If you prefer the shiny screen of an iPhone or iPad to the rough texture of a newspaper or glossy pages of a magazine then you’re in luck, as Kobo has announced it is expanding its eReader service to include dozens of US and Canadian periodicals. Those who download the free app are granted a two-week subscription to try out the service. If you like what you see, then you can choose to buy a monthly subscription for your chosen newspapers or magazines. “Kobo continues to build on our commitment of making sure that consumers have the best reading experience on any device with the largest selection of content worldwide, ” said Michael Serbinis, CEO of Kobo. “We’ve had tremendous success with eBooks and we’re very excited to expand the Kobo offering to include newspapers and magazines with a two-week free Read More
By Staff, Friday, Oct 15, 2010 | The New York Times has released a substantial update to their iPad newspaper reading app. The app — in a few words — is orders of magnitude better than the previous iPad offerings from NYTimes. Forbes reports: “The New York Times has finally unveiled the iPad app everyone knew was coming, the one that gives readers full access to the entire paper. It replaces the “Editor’s Choice” app, a truncated offering that Apple boss Steve Jobs reportedly hated.” Previously, The New York Times app for iPad was quite limited in functionality. However this new update adds not only polish, but also includes significant functionality extensions which should push mobile readership levels to new heights. While the iPad is a great platform for both magazines and newspapers alike, up until recently most notable publishers haven’t really taken full advantage of Apple’s tablet for pushing content Read More

Posted 10/04/2010 at 12:36pm | by Andrew Hayward Each new iPhone has offered fresh and fantastical ways to improve your daily life, but the epic tag-team of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 deliver the greatest set of tools and features to date. With the introduction of FaceTime video calls, multitasking, and the high resolution Retina display, the iPhone 4 has moved even further away from being just a powerful phone and web-surfing device. Between the built-in features and the hundreds of thousands of options in the App Store, not to mention a few key accessories, the iPhone 4 can be figuratively formed and changed to fit your daily needs, whether you’re planning your daily commute, knocking out items on your to-do list, or simply looking to try a new restaurant. Insgesamt erinnert ‘Times’ an die Editors’ Read More

Has the New York Times finally started charging people to read its news online? Not yet. But it sure looks like the Times is charging online readers if you visit Apple’s iTunes Store, which is selling two different New York Times (NYT) iPhone apps at 99 cents a pop. The Times has nothing to do with either app, both of which are called the “New York Times Mobile Reader.” And both are supposed to do the same thing: Spit out the paper, along with other Web content like podcasts, in iPhone-friendly form. You’d think the Times would want Apple (AAPL) to remove the miniprograms, if only to protect the value of the paper’s own app, which is both free and very good. When I pointed out the apps to a Times spokeswoman on Tuesday, she asked around and later confirmed that the two apps “are not authorized and our legal department Read More

Newspapers and magazines — the entire news print industry to be honest — have been suffering a long and torturous decline for much of the last decade as more of us turn to the Internet and electronic devices to get (increasingly personalized) news and other content. While publishers have generally been slow to adapt to shifting delivery platforms, change is — finally — afoot. Publishing supergiant Condé Nast is now taking its first tentative steps to embracing the digital realm with a series of iPhone apps designed to deliver its most popular titles electronically. Adage reports that the first title will be GQ magazine, released this December in the app store and priced at $2.99 (the regular print edition of the magazine costs as much as $4.99). Adage’s Nat Ives writes: The new app platform could help the company squeeze circulation and real ad revenue from digital. Because the apps will Read More
CNN Mobile: Feature-rich, Interactive, and Not Free
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Sep 2009 15:01:05 UTC +00:00
Other news outlets like The New York Times, France24, the Associated Press, and NPR have had free apps out for some time. CNN is taking something of a risk in making its offering a non-free download, but obviously hopes its feature set makes it attractive enough. The free (with ads) content includes both video on demand and live breaking news reports, with push notifications when live newscasts are available. The text-based news is fairly standard, with a photo and headline/subhead for each story. Rotate the phone to landscape orientation, though, and you get a CoverFlow-style photo flow that you can navigate to find the story you're interested in. CNN Mobile makes some interesting steps in the direction of social media, with the capability to forward news stories to Facebook, Twitter and SMS. And the ability to upload photos or video (3GS only) directly to CNN's iReport site from the iPhone holds Read More
AP Mobile updated but still falls short
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Jun 2009 01:30:00 UTC +00:00
The AP News [App Store] iPhone/iPod touch app that rolled out ugly earlier in the week has updated to version 2.01 and fixed that nasty problem that wouldn't let you run the app reliably if you had the previous AP Mobile app already on your phone. That has been fixed, but the app still suffers from more bugs than the centerfield lights at a night baseball game. When you update to the latest version you will likely lose all your preferences, and as we reported, setting preferences is no small task. The AP still insists on showing you a front page that wastes 1/3 of its space with a large photo and video icon. Usually, people come to a news app to read the news, but that concept seems lost on the AP. The result of this bad design decision is that only 3 stories show up on the front page, Read More
1 Billion Apps Later - Here Are Some of Our Favorites
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Apr 2009 22:30:01 UTC +00:00
Today, Apple announced that its customers have now downloaded a whopping one billion applications from its App Store. Here at ReadWriteWeb, quite a few of us have iPhones, so we thought that this would be a good time to feature some of our favorite apps. We download and test a lot of iPhone apps, but here are the ones that have stood the test of time for us. The App Store is now home to over 35,000 applications, so this is obviously only a small selection of applications, but these are the apps that we don't hesitate to recommend to our friends. We couldn't get feedback from everybody on the RWW team (and our BlackBerry users weren't very forthcoming with suggestions either), but here are the recommendations from Richard MacManus (R), Marshall Kirkpatrick (M), Frederic Lardinois (F), and Phil Glockner (P). Extra! Extra! You don't have to pay extra to get Wall Street Journal content on your iPhone. Good news for news junkies and anyone who can still stomach reading about the stock market: The Wall Street Journal just took the wraps off an eponymous iPhone app, offering news, video, and even podcasts. Better still, there's no charge for the app--or the content. That may surprise Journal subscribers who pay a little more than $100 per year for unrestricted Web access. But it puts the app on an even footing with The New York Times and USA Today apps, among others, which also provide news at no charge. The Journal app bears a striking resemblance to the Times app, with a five-icon toolbar that spans the bottom of the screen and a banner ad just above that. (Hey, somebody has to foot the bill.) But this isn't just the Times repackaged. For Read More

NYT great ap
Matttnyc 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This ap is great. I think what some people don't realize when complaining of slow speed is that it is actually loading up a whole day or more of articles and you are able to still read them even when you don't have cell or wifi service available like in a subway or on an airplane. So if you just give it sent time to download in the morning you are good to go!
Great Application. Needs Some Work.....
mbonham1 4.0 stars Version: 1.01
I'm an enthusiastic NYT reader and read the mobile web version from my iPhone daily. This application is a pretty good start. It uses the basic iPhone UI, and you can edit the four tiles at the bottom of the screen. The primary advantage to using this application, instead of the NYT website, is that the application downloads alll the stories; enabling you to read the paper offline (e.g., airplane mode or "no service'). NYT has already updated this app once to reduce the size of the ad, and I'm hoping they'll continue to improve it. The two major problems are that the stories don't appear to be updated regularly. When you compare the stories on the website with the application after it's been "updated", most of the current news stories don't appear in the application. So, if you're only interested in late breaking stories, stick with the website. Also, as noted by almsot everyone, the current update process is very, very sllooowwww. I have been updating in the morning, and it has been taking at least 3 to 5 minutes (over wifi) to retrieve the stories. Also of note is that if you go into the iphone settings, you can change the number of days of news that the application stores (1 - 7 days). Overall, it's a keeper, but I'm hoping to see another update soon.....
This could be great, but it isn't ready.
eab6287 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This application looks very appealing and has the functions laid out well, but it does not yet perform properly. Loading is VERY slow even on broadband connected WiFi. Some of the thumbnail images for articles don't load at all (the normal NYT website is rendered perfectly and fully in much less time).
Excellent
Jason Clark 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
After a minute or two of updating, there's a huge amount of news downloaded and available for offline viewing. Just start reading. And the stories scroll all the way down... no artificial "paging".
Slow and crashes
God_Mode 2.0 stars Version: 1.01
The safari version of the NYT is a much better experience. This app crashes very frequently and is very slow to load. Only good thing is the convenient categories of the stories. Avoid this app.
Slowwwwwww
rentalkarma 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is unbearably slow on EDGE, and intolerably slow on WiFi. The website is better. Sorry.
Great, but...
boogie2dabeat 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love the new app, but I need a email button!!! I forward tons of articles. Sticking to the old mobile version for now.
runs very slowly and crashes every time
LuanD 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Why does Apple even allow this app to be downloaded? NYTimes' content is great but the app quits suddenly every time it is used. I gave up using it.
Cool
H III 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Faster than Safari for reading NY Times. Articles include small ads near bottom. Some pages under More were very slow at loading but they're better for me now.
Good start
Andrman 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Clean app and I will enjoy the offline functionality. A glaring shortcoming is that it takes you to the top of an article when switching between portrait and landscape modes- not cool.
Nice design, but too slow and unreliable
JamesAstro 2.0 stars Version: 1.01
The user interface seems nice and simple. I'm able to download the "Latest News" section just fine. However, most other sections don't download anything. For example, I tried to read "Technology" news several times today. It never worked. If they can fix the reliability this might become a 4-star app.
Finally Works as Advertised!
plasticbugs 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Since the latest update, this app does indeed work as I had hoped it would. The complete text of each article (along with pictures) downloads in the morning when launch the app, which takes about 15 minutes over Wi-Fi. Make sure you disable Auto-Lock when updating: General > Auto-Lock > Never. Then, throughout the day, I am able to read the NY Times even when on the subway to and from work or on the subway platform - no Edge or Wi-Fi connection necessary - even works in Airplane Mode. At times it is a little unstable/crashy, but most apps on 2.0 still are at this point. Also, it's the New York Times for free (including Sundays!) so who am I to complain? Five Stars.
Incredible App for devoted NYT readers
Stem cell 5.0 stars Version: 1.01
Not intended to replace reading the Times with Safari, but as a great alternative for certain situations when web access is not available, i.e. on the airplane or with an Ipod Touch when a hotspot is not available. Even better, you can load up to an entire week of the Times that can be read off-line. I just load up the day's issue on my home wi-fi in the morning and then have the option to read it without web access anytime during the day.
Crashes constantly
Sherman the Tank 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This would be the best way to read the NYT if it didn't crash constantly. How hard can it be to fix?
Cool but...
Tim Don 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
...slow at times, and where is the food section?! Hungry!
Sublime
suckeffect 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Makes the iPhone a first-class way to enjoy my favorite news site.
Horrible. Crashes ALL the time...
RedVanRyzin 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Loads slow if at all. Lots of issues. Needs major work.
Pretty, but slow and kludgy
hotzet 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the first app or web page that's really made the iPhone feel slow to me. Scrolling is jerky at best and doesn't have the lightning-fast response I've come to expect from the iPhone; even over a fast WiFi connection, it feels like it takes too long to load. When it says its 'updating,' it never gives me a status report and just seems to keep on downloading indefinitely, so I don't know its up to or if I can go to the subway and read news without a connection. Still, it is the best graphical presentation of the Times I've seen on a mobile device.
Easy To Navigate
bpearltx 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good application. Nice, clean interface. Small ad on bottom screen, but doesn't detract too much from viewing.
Bad reviews fail to truly understand the app
Bojado72 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
As some others have said, this app loads a great deal of news so you should give it 5-10 minutes or so before leaving home if using wifi. Overall it is a great app if you understand how to use it.
Excellent. WAS crashing frequently but they've put out an upgrade.
RaisorSharp 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I use this everyday to read the quality news put out by NY times. It was crashing but the update helped.
Easy to use!
J. Sawdust 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Look forward to updates.
Requires Dedicated User
John Corso 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
I fire this up every morning and let it load stories that I read all day. Even on a solid Wi-Fi signal, this takes 15 minutes and two or three crashes. I have to set the phone's auto-lock to "never" (and remember to re-set it afterwards) and keep checking for crashes. I'm uncertain how much of this is necessary; the "Updating" display seems very reluctant to go away, and may be buggy. The app has a great design and delivers great content, but needs work.
Almost there
Ian Eng 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Looks beautiful, but scrolling was choppy, and the app is a little rough around the edges.
Nice job...
dhayman 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
This is a very nice interface to the NYT. Apparently the new update (September 14) has done something about the slow loading, because it went quite acceptably well for me on a number of occasions, and I did not have the earlier version. However, there does seem to be a problem with random closings, occasionally. Its not crashing (locking up), it just...closes. But at least when you open it again, its at the top of the same article you were reading. Still, its slightly annoying. That is something I am sure a future update will address, but overall, this is a keeper. I love it.
Another failure
Alphabool 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.3
Why can't NYT get this mobile platform right? This app is slow and finicky; I have to constantly worry if it's ready for my keypress or if it will crash. Though article retrieval & presentation is improved, the app is maddeningly slow and inefficient. In comparison with the AP and WSJ app, the NYT app comes up way short. They need to stop adding features and start finding a feasible way to present all the great NY Times writing in a usable manner. At least the devs had the humility to add a "reset" button!
This app is a POS
Useless2 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.2
It used to work but the new upgrade killed it. This app is a POS.
Very Buggy!
Cbburrows 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Worked well at first with the new upgrade. Now it is slow and crashes frequently. Needs another update
Such mixed feelings about this app
Lucky_S_Club 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.2
As of version 2.0.2 the developers keep adding worthwhile features (I love the option to turn off landscape mode), but the app just gets worse and worse in terms of freezing, crashing, and frequent unresponsiveness. At the best of times this has the most sluggish interface of any app I've ever used. Flick-to-scroll basically doesn't work. More like flick and 5 to 15 seconds later the screen will scroll if you're lucky. More often the app will just crash. It crashes during start up more than 75% of the time. New in 2.0.2 is freezing: the app doesn't crash, but it just doesn't do anything; it hangs and you either have to force-quit by holding the home button, or when that doesn't work force-restarting the phone. Resetting the app by clearing caches etc in settings improves the situation for a launch or two, but soon things return to "normal" -- crash, crash, hang, crash, crash.
Do NOT download ver 2.0.2!
tpdgvii 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.2
WORST app on my iPhone! The last version was unstable and degraded over time to the point it constantly crashed. This version does nothing but freeze my iPhone! Guys, get it right for ONCE! USA Today's app and the AP Mobile News app both work fine, why can't yours?
2.0 is terrible
Old version was better 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Crashes,slow.
Banner Ads
Ncdukeboy 1.0 stars Version: 3.3
Ok, so today I get another email from the Desperate Times to sign up for their smartphone subscription for $5 for 12 weeks thereafter normal rate of $15 a month applies. So I take the bait and pay the $5 bucks and sign up. Now I understand and accept that if I want to read something for free from the NYT or other newspapers via a smartphone I will be subjected to banner ads. I have no problem with that.My problem is that after paying the trial subscription, logging in, and now reading the NYT as a paid smartphone user, I was shocked to continue to see cheap banner ads keep popping up on articles no matter what section I was reading. They even appeared in the Obit section. This is just plain pathetic.I am not really a NYT avid fan but I do think they are still a pretty decent national paper but they keep making mistakes after mistakes.I seriously doubt I will continue to subscribe after the trial ends.
Waaay too expensive
YesNoCancel 2.0 stars Version: 3.3
I want the NY Times to survive, but $195/year is not going to happen. At the very least, please turn off updates for all the sections I can't even read (see previous sentence).
new version is not crash down any more
Yunzhilei 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
Fortunately, NYTimes fix this app bug, hope for keeping advanced and quality continuously.
Excellent app
neo.theone13 4.0 stars Version: 3.3
I subscribed to the New York Times Online and Smartphone edition. I must admit the app is well designed to deliver the content.
Updates just keep getting worse.
Bardo State 1.0 stars Version: 3.3
Previous updates nuked saved articles. Then they fixed that but the articles were no longer saved in chronological order. Now with the latest update unless you're a subscriber you can't even save any of the "freebie" Top Stories. Just make everything subscribers-only and stop screwing around with such stupidity.
Make the ads go away
VfrKen 1.0 stars Version: 3.3
As a paying subscriber, it is unacceptable for banner ads to be on all the time. I expect better of a national/world paper.
Stop the banner ads
Rubino6055 2.0 stars Version: 3.3
The banner ads will not go away and make it impossible to view the page. Really hard to believe the Times cannot come up with a better looking app.
worst news app ever
David Gartner 1.0 stars Version: 3.3
Strange lags all the time and annoying ads without an option to remove them, even with subscription.
Not Good at all
Langston Hughes 1.0 stars Version: 3.3
App does not load from newsstand
Seriously Bugged
Nick Franke 1.0 stars Version: 3.3
The app is filled with bugs. Every time it updates it takes several minutes to complete even on wifi. About half the time updating causes it to freeze and of you try and restart it will crash every time you open it. You eventually just have to delete the app entirely and reinstall it. This app is seriously bugged.
