Microsoft OneNote on Android: nice but late to the party
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Feb 2012 16:04:21 UTC +00:00
Microsoft added Android support for its OneNote mobile app, enabling smartphones and tablets running on Google’s mobile platform to take notes from their device. The software syncs through Microsoft’s Windows Live SkyDrive and to both OneNote for Microsoft Windows and the OneNote web app. OneNote for Android is free for the first 500 notes, and then costs a one-time fee of $4.99 for unlimited usage. The price is certainly right to try OneNote if you’re an Android user: 500 notes will tell you for sure if the app meets your needs. And for many users, it likely will. I say that as a long-time user of OneNote when I used my first Microsoft Tablet PC in 2004. I found OneNote to be a powerful organization tool as I could create different notebooks for different contexts, such as work, personal, blogging ideas, and more. The full software paired well with my tablet Read More

Microsoft OneNote now available for Android
Calendar16 Wed, 08 Feb 2012 03:09:21 UTC +00:00
Microsoft said it would bring its suite of Office apps to mobile devices and the company is staying true to its word. Microsoft previously released it’s popular note-taking app, OneNote, for the iPad, iPhone, and, of course, Windows Phone. Starting on Tuesday, the app is now available on Android. The Android app lets you edit OneNote documents on your phone and sync the changes between devices using Microsoft’s SkyDrive service. The app also includes the following features: The biggest drawback to the Android version is that it’s formatted for the phone. Though it would be perfect for a larger screen, the tablet app is not available yet and there’s no indication that Microsoft is readying one. If it’s still useful to you on the phone, you can grab the free OneNote for Android from the Android Market. It’ll be available in the following regions: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Read More

First Lync, and now OneNote! Amazing how much love Microsoft is showing Android these days! OneNote works well. I didn't experience any of the Live issues others were having. Synced all my Notebooks without any issue, and does a great job formatting for the small screen.

I'm glad this finally came. It's very cool that I can create notes on my phone, pc browser, or in one note, and sync to see the same thing in all 3 places. My only gripe is they should have done this 3 years ago.

If you could add text to a picture. If when add a page if it could stay in the page / notebook where working. This application has the potential to be best most useful smartphone application ever. stop handicapping it.

One Note is a solid note taking app with great cloud synchronization on skydrive but it uses over 25mb on my phones internal memory. I was forced to remove it. Microsoft must fix the app so that it uses less of my internal memory, transfer memory demand to my SD memory chip, before I reinstall.

Activating the product requres signing in with a Windows Live account. Multiple attempts over two days to sign into Windows Live from the OneNote app has been fruitless. I keep getting the following message: "Can't sign in," followed by, "We are unable to sign in becasue server is unavailable. Please try again later." The company's grammar (it should be "the server") is the least of Microsoft's problems with this product launch. The issue seems to be with the mobile app, because I can log into Windows Live from my laptop. For a company that defines the core value of Office as seemless integration, this is a huge mistake for their product team.

I love my One Note. Never had it until I got new laptop this year with Windows 7 & MO 2010. Wondered how I lived without it. I even like/live the app - wish it were a fully functional One Note though. Wish Microsoft would embrace Android & provide, even for purchase, full function versions of their most popular software, i.e. , One Note. I would for pay for pro version for my Android phone.
Kathleen 0.0 stars
Downloaded the app and set up a Windows Live account when prompted. Tried to sign in so that I could actually use the app and got this message: “We are unable to sign in because server is unavailable. Please try again later.” Tried about three times - no luck and no support. If I could give it less than one star to reflect the perfectly good hour of my life I wasted on this app, I would. Great job, Microsoft.

I use OneNote every day for work. Nice to have the mobile feature. I created a template for my mobile application for ease of use. Wish there was a "share this page" E-mail feature like the full OneNote version. Can't wait for future upgrades.

Flawless synchronization with SkyDrive. Works well with the free software limit of 500 notes. Biggest disappointment is the huge amount of data it stores in main memory - App2SD capabilities is really a "must have feature". Occupying +40 MiB (app + data) of storage in main memory is a definite show-stopper.
Dirk 0.0 stars
The syncing is very well thought out and easy to use, it's great if your going to use text only. As soon as drawing is added we have a five star app. I know I would be happy to pay for this feature...

I agree with Kathleen: Downloaded the app and set up a Windows Live account when prompted.

Won't let me log on using my windows live id. I can log on perfectly fine on the PC site. However, when I try to logon with the app it tells me login failed, go to PC site for help!!!!!!!

Where do I start with this app? First of all, EVERYTHING this app does can be done MUCH easier and faster combining pdfs into binders, or through google docs. 2nd, the ap is VERY clumsy. It's awkward to use and awkward to make changes to your tasks or notes after you add them. 3rd, no desktop widget? I thought the point was to have easy access to your notebooks. 4th "Sync Error: Can't sync because this section or notebook is renamed, moved or deleted." No joke!! That's actually what it says. "The whole point of syncing something is so that if you rename, move, or delete it the change will be reflected on all of your devices." -- Captain Obvious
John 0.0 stars
If you are using Windows 8 CP out 2/29/2012 you would understand the login w/ M$ account (.hotmail - .MSN) as it moves all you settings and preferences to skydrive to any computer you log on to, private, or public. Very good move when you get use to it's potential.

I noticed that the android version of onenote creates a Personal(web) notebook on my sky drive. If i delete it, android onenote just recreates it. If i use another notebook and try to add a note, it synchs to the Personal(Web), not the notebook i added it in. Can't find any setting to change the default notebook. Will all the other issues listed in the ratings, average app at best. Please try harder microsoft, this could be such a great app.
Richard 0.0 stars
Needs lots more of the features of the desktop version... like ink and file attachments. But it's not bad just now. Keep up the good work.

Finally! I was this ' ' close to switching to EverNote because of the lack of Android support. What is implemented works well (at least for me), but not all functions that I consider essential are implemented, yet. needed: *search ! (seriously. The usefulness of the app drops to anywhere between 30% to 70% depending on user) *sync to sharepoint and dropbox etc. (useless for serious usage without share point support) *create notes and tabs at any place (Frankly, I do not use Unfiled Notes section at all on my desktop!) *selective sync (select/exclude notebooks... all my notebooks have some GB) (select/exclude file types etc. For example, one may have a lot of large video/audio recordings in some notes that they want to sync only as-needed.) *etc.

This is a really cool up, OneNote is highly underrated as a piece of software. However, this app does need to have the abililty to add drawings. For example, I have this on my tablet, so it would be really useful in physics class if I could sketch some drawings. I don't want to have to click anything, since I have a docking keyboard, I want to be able to write with the docking keyboard and draw with my fingers immediately. If microsoft adds this option, then it is the microsoft that we know and love. thanks...

Been using onenote desktop forever. Finally this app came out for android. A few things wrong with it, but provided you sync to skydrive, which I do, more than adequate. Add Dropbox support, instant sync, and the ability to create new notes in existing notebooks, and it'll be perfect.
BlueManta 0.0 stars
I have been using one note on my desktop to share documents and collaborate with other people. The only missing part was the mobile app. I would have given it 5 stars if it didn't have limitations and allowed to create books, tabs and notes in any tab rather than creating all notes in the "unfiled notes" tab/folder and then force me to move them on the desktop. This limitation basically creates more work and is counter-productive. The name of this app would better be "None Note Reader".Too bad!
zjjtrans 0.0 stars
Instead of making organising notes smoothly over laptop, mobile and web server, it makes it rather painful to write a note and then put it into the correct folder. You can only organise notes in SkyDrive. The android app version doesn't provide cut and paste function, either, making it impossible to take notes when you find something useful online via your phone. Not recommended at all.
David 0.0 stars
Sucks. When I try to log in continues to tell me server is down. For two days now ... Really! Oh yea did I say it sucks. Thanks Bill G.

Very nice, now I like oneNote on my laptop even more. The app is still very new, so I hope more advanced features will be added over time.

I've been writing code for Microsoft platforms for 30+ years, using Microsoft tools and software for at least that long, and I can honestly say I've rarely been so disappointed in a piece of MS code in all that time. OneNote on the desktop has been indispensible to me; that said, the mobile version can't create new notebooks; it can only edit existing ones. It can't even create or rename sections in those notebooks. You can't email notes, or really do much of anything with them. Mobile OneNote is a feeble, neutered app of extremely limited usefulness compared to another note-taking app I've been using for some months now. I deeply regreat having spent the $5.00+ for this...toad.

Been using the client app for a few years and have loved it. Now I can view it on the go! Love it!!! Works well too.

I has such high hopes for this app. I though it could be a replacement for google docs the advantage being with this you can work offline and then sync when you have network coverage. However I found it clumsy and unintuitive to use. Slower than something this simple should be as well. I've found gnotes for offline note taking (and auto sync to online), also free.
John 0.0 stars
"Server unavailable". What? Why do I have to log in to Skydrive? Can't I just sync to the One Note files on my computer over WiFi? Uninstalling.
hugh 0.0 stars
Plenty of note keepers out the already. no ink?! Better if it sync'd with pc, or easily emailed out files. Uninstalling until it has ink and better interop.
Nick 0.0 stars
The app does not support handwritten (inked) notes at all, it just displays a loading failed indicator wherever these notes are. This is a major problem for someone who uses Onenote to capture class notes on his tablet. I was hoping to be able to use this app to look up my class notes when I am not at a computer, but the lack of support for handwritten notes makes this just about useless for me. I would really like to see at least the picture of the handwriting displayed, even if I can't interact with it. Or, if this is even too much to ask for, maybe convert the handwriting to text to display on the phone. (This is not a solution by itself. Handwriting recognition is not accurate enough to convert all my notes for eternity. This would have to just be a way of displaying the notes on the phone.)
Paladin 0.0 stars
Can't add new sections, can't rename sections, can't take audio notes, no handwriting recognition, and can't open encrypted sections just to name a few shortcomings. What if I don't want to use Skydrive and just want to sync to my local machine, or some other cloud provider? Definitely disappointing, but I will await future upgrades and hope...

Asks me to sign in to Windows Live, then tells me "Sorry, that page isn't available on mobile browsers. You can view it on your PC, or try viewing the PC version here." - which kind of defeats the object - then when you try to view the PC version it tells me "You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect email address or password." - even after just one attempt. Only Microsoft could make something so simple into something so difficult. Uninstalled.

Checklists, bullets, numbered lists come out screwy, letters written behind bullets/boxes. Xperia x10

I like it. It's a basic, trimmed down version I can use to take notes and sync via my Live account. Tested all features, but doesn't appear to let me file my notes; they all go "Unfiled." Let me file my notes and create sections, then I'll add two more stars.

Good enough, but has some problems like that it has 18mb and cant be moved to sd (and my phone only has 200mb). I like microsoft stuff but this app could be better

Don't care to have a special email just to use an app. Unfortunatlly this is how Microsoft does business. If you do not have a Microsoft email and do not want one don't waste your time.
Kolina 0.0 stars
I like the idea of being able to see my notes when I login to my live email and I love the Word-like functionality on the web side...
Gary 0.0 stars
I downloaded this app expecting more, and am not amused that the app alone takes 19MB in main system memory, and is not able to be moved to SD. To make matters worse, I tried to open the app and was unable to finish registration with my Live account (servers temporarily unavailable). So basically, I have an App that take up 19MB, and does nothing....delete.

I have been waiting for onenote to come to my phone. So far it works great, thanks.
wanorris 0.0 stars
It's great that this is out, but it's hard to believe that it lacks core features like cut and paste support. You also can't do basic things like create a new tab in your notebook. I love OneNote, but I'm sticking with Evernote until this is a little more complete.
Kamil 0.0 stars
Do you really need my phone number, address and birthdate Microsoft, just so I can create a to do list? Really? Waste of time.

Been using OneNote at work the past few months and was great until I found out there was no app for it to sync with my Thunderbolt. I no longer have that issue. Sure, there's a few quirks and wish list items I'd want on the app. But for a first release, it's great. 500 Note limit is acceptable. People need to quit whining about it not being enough - it's a FREE app and 500 is plenty for everyday stuff including work! A single 'note' can contan lots of information! If you need more, then you need more horsepower than a phone app, in my opinion. Good start Microsoft - though a little late to the dance on the Droid platform. Fix some of the glitches and add some of the wish list features and it'd be a very solid app for all Droid phones.
Hoang 0.0 stars
I am kind of shocked that I could not cut/copy the notes from some other notebook/apps and paste to Onenote, nor editing within the Onenote. Also the texts cannot be zoomed in nor out to resize the texts in order to read. So far without these features, it already deters me from using this app. It would be Nice If the attached picture could be resized within a desirable place within the note. I look forward to see your new update with these features in order for me to start using it.

The OneNote files on my desktop and laptop can sync to Skydrive so they stay in tune. Why can't this sync to the files in Skydrive this way. The files this app syncs to are not in the same place. Why? I don't want to have to work in two different places that won't sync up. It's still not ready to replace Evernote for me.
EddiePhoenix 0.0 stars
I use onenote extensively at work and my phone and tablet are both connected everywhich way to my company systems except onenote. I thought this would fix that... it doesn't. Cant open shared notebooks on my network and no pen input. Guess i will have to continue using evernote for my handwritten notes.

Can't show handwriting. Feels very sluggish. Very unintuitive controls and menus. The idea is there, but if it has the OneNote brand they should be of similar caliber

The Idea - FIVE STARS!! The actual application - OMG!! There is nothing to get the 'ol blood pressure up like working away on an important check list for a trip on the One Note Web App, and suddenly see "Can't contact server..." hidden in the upper right of your screen. Gee. How long has that been there? Hmmm... Can't save... Copy to a Word Document? CTRL-A doesn't select all - gotta do it with the mouse... Etc. Etc. Back on the Android tablet (later, re-entered it ALL), I've though of a missed item - no problem, add it!! ...except that it is now in mico-character mode with NO WAY to control the font size!!! Argh. And don't even try to sign up for a Windows Live ID via your Android Tablet - unless you love to watch phone number digits dance around as you attempt to fill in the mandatory entry!!!

Easy to edit, create new pages. Looking forward to additional craters - sketch, formatting, send notes, share to onenote, screen capture...and a better tablet layout. In the meantime, it has been quite functional for what it does.

This is a poorly executed clone of Evernote. For those of us actually looking for something with one note functionality (attaching, linking, and organizing pdf's and other documents the way that one note does on the pc) we'll have to keep searching. Developers, the door is wide open, as Microsoft has, in their usual way, screwed this opportunity up beyond recovery. Uninstalled
Rob 0.0 stars
Still use Evernote for actual quick note taking but since I use OneNote 2010 at work all day this was a no brainer. Works great synced to my Skydrive and formatting stays the same when it syncs. Could use more robust editing and could be faster to sync(Evernote is MUCH faster)

Note: this review is for the free version. From the descriptions it sounds like you don't get more features with the paid version, just access to a higher volume of notes. This app totally fails to bring the best parts of OneNote's functionality to Android. THERE IS NO SEARCH FUNCTION. I do not understand how Microsoft thought it would be ok to release this app without a search function. The beautiful layout that only OneNote has---with each layer of organization visible at the same time (Notebook, tab, page)---isn't available. The app is even uglier and less navigable than Evernote. You can see either the list of notebooks, or the list of tabs, or the list of pages, or a page. You cannot see any of those things at the same time. Want to see another page? You have to go back up to the list of tabs. Want to see the list of tabs WHILE you're looking at your notes? Too bad. The page you're looking for isn't in this notebook? Back up you go, to the list of notebooks. What was it you were looking for again? You've forgotten by now. Well, go back down to the page you were on and search for the thing you wanted----OH WAIT, THERE IS NO SEARCH FUNCTION.

GET your program up to par and it'd be worth paying for the program, but I have no intention of paying for Microsoft storage when I already have a far superior dropbox service. Give us the same folder setup as the Windows program and drop this live ID crap!

I guess it depends on what features you used from one note. Handwriting? No. So forget using it on a tablet without a keyboard attached. Embedded graphics/emails/calendars? No. Basically, just use skydrive instead - or find a new tool (which is what I've sadly been relegated to)

I have hundreds of old notes in OneNote synchronized to my SkyDrive. I was looking for a specific piece of information so I downloaded this app and synchronized my notes to my phone. Then I tried to find the piece of information that I knew was buried somewhere in my notes. How would I do this? Look through hundreds of notes in a needle-in-a-haystack exercise! No thank you!
