By – The New York Post recently began enforcing a paywall as over the weekend, visitors were surprised when they navigated to the Post's site on their iPad and were greeted with a message telling them to pick up the iPad app. There is a workaround. We found that some browsers, such as Fraktol and iLunascape allowed us to view the website, while browsers like Atomic Lite and Mobile Safari did not. Crappy Opera for iPad showed us the mobile website, but that's better than the paywall. If the browser has a private mode or a way to change/block the user agent, you may still be able to see it, but we can confirm that as of the time of our writing, the browsers we mentioned above will work.    Related Posts Read More
Opera Mini For iPad

Opera has released a version of it’s alternate web browser for the iPad. It was originally a big drama to get another browser on Apple’s iOS next to Safari but Apple eventually allowed it. Opera has been available on the iPhone for a while but now works on the iPad too. The app is pretty good over all and has some great features. Opera loads webpages on their servers and then compresses the data to load faster on your device. It’s great when you have a slow connection or you want to save bandwidth on your iPhone or iPad data plan. It also has a password storing system and multiple tab support. I do have a few problems though. Too often it loads the mobile version of the website and there’s no way to get out of it. Facebook is a perfect example. That is VERY frustrating. It would be nice Read More

It’ll be interesting to see if Apple gives Safari a facelift in the upcoming iOS 5 update. It’s already rumored that several areas like voice control will receive an overhaul, but will the tiny browser see any improvements? If you’re not currently happy with Apple’s default browser, there are several alternatives in the App Store. iCab and Atomic are awesome choices, but what about Opera Mini? Even if you didn’t like the browser before, you might want to check out the latest update… I’ve tried Opera Mini as a browser replacement on my iPhone before, and let’s just say it didn’t last long. But when I started noticing several media outlets reporting the major update, I had to check it out again. The improved user interface is gorgeous and features convenient access to favorite websites and browser settings. Tapping the O launches a neat and easy to read menu. In my opinion, Read More
posted by Joe Rossignol on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 1:34 pm.   Opera Mini, which was released for iPhone and iPod touch just over a year ago, has now been updated to include support for the iPad and iPad 2. The alternative web browser, which also gained Retina Display support, comes to the iPad in version 6.0 and with a variety of new features. The overall design of the web browser has been given a facelift, including brand new menus, and there is new social networking functionality that will allow you to share URLs to Twitter, Facebook, and other social websites from directly within the app. If you’re the owner of an iPad with 3G connectivity, this app might be beneficial to you because of its “90% compression of data traffic for speed and cost savings, making both your patience and wallet happy on slower connections or when roaming.” “I Read More
Opera Mini 6 lands on iPad, iPhone
Calendar16 Tue, 24 May 2011 20:40:19 UTC +00:00
If you’re sick of the standard Safari browser on the iPhone or the iPad, then you’ll be happy to know that Opera Mini 6 is now available of iOS and it has been optimized for whichever screen you’re using. The new update of Opera Mini 6 includes: I’ve played around with Opera Mini 6 briefly on my iPad and it felt really good. Pages load quickly, you have pinch to zoom and it feels fast. If you recall, Opera Mini landing on the iOS platform was kind of a big deal because Apple didn’t allow apps which are “redundant.” The company got around that though and it has seen great success in the iOS space. Opera Mini 6 is able to be faster than Safari because it uses proxy technology – your requests are sent to an Opera server, the page is compressed and it’s shot back to you. The idea Read More
Opera Mini Updated, Goes Universal, Gets Even Better
Calendar16 Tue, 24 May 2011 18:15:10 UTC +00:00
One of the few truly excellent alternative browsers for any smartphone, not just iOS, is Opera Mini.  It has always been good to use and the last update to version 5 enhanced its tabbed browsing and improved the handy Speed Dial feature on the iPhone. Opera Mini has now been updated to version 6 and the good news is, it has become a universal app for the iPhone and the iPad.  It’s not just that either, as it now supports the iPhone 4’s Retina Display and has been given a visual makeover too.  Aside from the new-look interface, pinch-to-zoom has been made smoother, new pages can be opened in the background and there is direct sharing for Facebook and Twitter too. That’s in addition to the 3G-friendly data-compression system, where Opera’s servers help improve loading times by squeezing the data down before sending it to your browser. First impressions while giving Read More

Opera rolled out version 6 of its popular web browser for iOS today. The latest version of Opera Mini now supports the iPad and the Retina Display of the iPhone 4, two major upgrades that should bring a smile to the face of iOS users. Opera Mini 6 also adds smoother panning and improved pinch-to-zoom to bring the user experience on par with mobile Safari. Other salient features include the ability to share pages directly with social networks (Twitter, Facebook and My Opera) as well as support for Arabic, Chinese and similar non-Latin languages. Over a year after its launch on the iPhone, Norway-based browser maker Opera Software has at last ported its Opera Mini mobile browser to the larger form factor of the Apple iPad. The new universal iOS application, Opera Mini 6, brings a full-featured Web browser to both tablet and phone, offering a customized start page, tabbed browsing, password saving, social sharing and more. With Opera Mini 6, iPad users have what feels like a "real" Web browser on their tablet computers, thanks to features like the customizable start page which you fill with your own favorite websites, for example. It also introduces improved tabbed browsing without Safari's 8-page (iPhone) or 9-page (iPad) limit. In the new Opera Mini 6, you press the "tabs" button at the top of the screen to show your open tabs in a scrollable interface. The tabs lay on top of each other just slightly, allowing you Read More

Opera Mini for iPad set for debut

According to a report from Macworld, the iPad is about to get its own version of the popular Opera Mini web browser. The new iPad-centric version will supposedly be released at the Mobile World Congress event starting in Barcelona next week, along with updated versions for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry mobile platforms. Speaking with Macworld, Opera CEO Lars Boilesen said that "Our developers have been hard at work building the mobile browser of the future for both consumers and mobile operators." Back in 2008 it was reported that Apple wouldn't allow Opera to place their mobile browser in the App Store to compete with Safari, but in April of 2010 it was finally approved for use on the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad and is currently available as a free download from the App Store. Of course, it has to use WebKit for the browsing engine, but it maintains Read More

Layar, Opera Mini top GetJar app awards

Applications like Opera Mini, Layar and Lookout topped GetJar’s first annual Gettie Awards. Team IntoMobile was there last night and it was quite an interesting experience. I’ll get to the winners first, as GetJar was seeking the best Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, iPhone and Android apps. The winners received some monetary reward (I don’t think it was straight fat stacks of cash but some sort of developer compensation) and the acclaim of the mobile world. The Java app winner was WaveSecure Backup, Nimbuzz nabbed the Symbian award and Opera Mini grabbed the top spot for Windows Mobile. Tap Tap Revenge 3 was named the best app for the Apple iPhone, Lookout nabbed the best Android app and Layar was named the top overall mobile program. “It was an honor for GetJar to host this celebration for the mobile developers that shape and drive our industry,” Patrick Mork, CMO of GeJar, Read More
Ditch Safari - Install a Faster Browser on Your iPhone
Calendar16 Thu, 13 May 2010 18:34:33 UTC +00:00
Posted 05/13/2010 at 10:34am | by Michelle Delio The App Store’s loaded with browsers intended to provide a speedier, richer experience—after all, Mobile Safari leaves ample room for improvement. With the exception of Opera Mini, all the competing browsers are built using the same WebKit code base (WebKit is the open-source browser engine at the heart of Safari), so any performance gains come from added features like improved tabbing, faster scrolling, image/ad blockers, and page compression. Some of these features are useful and do contribute to faster, more efficient browsing. That said, all third-party browsers running on iPhone and iPad are inherently handicapped. Since you can’t chose an alternative app as your default web browser, basic activities like opening links from other apps aren’t a matter of click and open. And given their second-class-citizen status as non-system apps, third-party browsers can’t run in the background, so there’s no behind-the-scenes rendering or Read More

How to Make Your Opera Mini Browser Sing
Calendar16 Mon, 19 Apr 2010 15:16:33 UTC +00:00
The Opera Mini Web browser for the iPhone was downloaded 1 million times on its first day in the iTunes store. So now that you have it, there are some tips and tricks to make it more useful. Some are pretty obvious, some are not. One thing you can’t do with Opera is use it from within apps. When you tap on an application that takes you to the Web, your only choice is Apple’s own Safari. It’s automatic. An overlooked advantage is that all of the transmissions to and from the Opera Mini Browser over the air on the iPhone are encrypted, which is not true of Safari, said an Opera spokesman. Many people have not caught on to the “long click,” which operates a number of features. A long click just means holding your finger on a link, icon or search box until a menu pops up. For instance, Read More
Opera Mini on the iPhone: Nice Toy, Could it Ever Be More?
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Apr 2010 15:00:37 UTC +00:00
I couldn’t wait to try out the new Opera Mini browser for the iPhone, so I didn’t. I downloaded it via my iTunes UK account (it was released there much earlier than over here) and set about running it through its paces. This is what I found. First of all, let me be clear: Opera Mini will never replace mobile Safari on the iPhone. Not, at least, until Apple makes available to users the ability to switch which apps open by default when performing certain actions. As long as Safari is the default web browser across the platform, Opera Mini really can’t be much more than a well-executed novelty. I did however say well executed. Using Opera Mini is definitely a pleasurable experience. From the snappy loading times that come from having the pages pre-rendered on Opera’s servers and pushed out to the phone at lightning speeds, to the pop-up tab Read More
Fail: Opera Mini Web browser and Acid3 benchmark
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Apr 2010 07:44:20 UTC +00:00
is a suite of tests which benchmarks a browser’s performance in standards compliance and page rendering. Desktop versions of Opera fair pretty well, but Opera Mini Web browser falls (alot) somewhat lower than that. iPhone Safari scores 100/100, but fails the last portion, an image render. Opera Mini Web browser makes do with a score of 74/100 AND fails the last image. At least it betters Internet explorer and Sony PSP’s Netfront browsers which added all together, barely crack 50/100! Opera Software ASA, Opera Mini Web browser, FREE! TouchMyApps readers have noticed Opera webpage rendering issues, though there are other opinions, which favour its browsing speed. Opera Mini Web browser needs to catch up with its desktop version, but considering a first release on the iDevice, is far better than Microsoft’s offerings. In terms of thes standard Acid3 suite of tests, the current pack of mobile web browsers is led by Read More
As you probably know by now, Apple surprisingly decided not to stick to its sacrosanct “non-duplication of core functionality” rule with the Opera mini browser. This generated quite some buzz and curiosity actually, which propelled the Opera mini for iPhone browser at the top of every App Store and cumulating over a million downloads on launch day. Great news for its developers obviously, but I’m having some serious doubts about whether this will last. I mean; the app is just horrendous. Alright, I admit it’s damn fast, but at what cost? The rendering is terrible and you have to fight with a clunky zoom to actually see anything. Have you tried checking your gmail account on it? Good, don’t. First of all you’re putting yourself at risk; secondly, it looks like what you get on a RAZR V2…. I’m not saying it’s bad they allowed it, au contraire it makes Safari looks Read More

Opera’s browser tops App Stores worldwide
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Apr 2010 19:41:03 UTC +00:00
Well, it looks like Opera’s big public push to get on the iPhone has resonated with customers because the browsing app is topping the free category in multiple markets. If you recall, Apple didn’t let any non-Webkit browser into its App Store because it “duplicated functionality.” Opera was able to get its Mini browser approved because it cleverly said the server-side technology wasn’t against Apple’s developer terms of service. This logic, along with some public pressure, now means there are a lot of iPhone users testing out Opera’s product. As you can see from the video below, the main advantage of Opera Mini is speed. The server-side browser has been optimized to deliver pages over low bandwidth, so iPhone users perpetually stuck on EDGE should find it appealing. There’s also web browser caching and a “speed dial” homepage that creates visual bookmarks for your favorite sites. I’ve played with it on Read More

Opera Mini is a web browser for the iPhone. A web browser? Why would you want that, you already have Safari, right? Good question… Opera Mini seems to be an application that was built just because they could do it. It’s really only useful for a small number of people — those that only have access to really bad Edge data. And it needs to be really bad to make Opera Mini useful. The goal of Opera Mini is to speed up the rendering of web pages by doing all of the hard work on the server and then sending down low bandwidth images to the client on your iPhone. And, in theory it works, but in practice, not so Read More

Debut: Opera Mini Web browser – The fat lady has sung
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Apr 2010 07:18:13 UTC +00:00
My wager: Apple will never let a competitor’s web browser into the App Store, cost me a particularly good horse. I may be the only one not happy about the debut of Opera Mini Web Browser. Had you met Hillie, the pony-horse, you’d be equally upset. It’s small consolation that in her place is the only current alternative to Apple’s one-horse webkit monopoly lead by iPhone Safari. Opera Mini is cute; it has all the pertinent functions in easy-to-reach places and better in-app settings than iPhone Safari. It also generally handles website formatting better than good ol’ WebKit and has a lovely implementation of tabbed browsing. Overall, it’s a ‘good’ experience which would bring in a TouchMyApps rating of Grab. In some cases, it loads slower than Safari and iPhone OS controls are substituted for blocky, oddly-placed alternatives _almost_ as if Opera Software ASA wanted nothing more than to spite Apple Read More

Speedy little browser!
bluecinnabar 5.0 stars Version: 5.0
It's definitely quick. I've visited sites heavy on graphics and photos and those don't slow down this browser at all. It'll take a while to get used to the single tap zoom (the trick is to drag after tapping if you don't want to zoom. All in all very nice and kudos to Apple for approving this!
oops... missed the mark!

opera may be popular on other platforms, but sorry guys, you failed here. this browser was slower than safari, totally lacked the intuitiveness of safari and was horribly clunky. it's pretty clear that this thing got approved after apple got into the guts of this thing and realized that it offered nothing close to competition. doesn't come close to "replacing core functionality." it's too awful for that.
It stuck at the beginning
User2010asdf 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
It doesn't run at all after open it,& stuck at the beginning, only keep blinking and rotate the icon on the top bar. Must it use 3g? I only hav wifi..man this is dissapointing..
The browser you

Finally it is here! A browser that doesn't reload a webpage when you view it after switching from another tab. The speed is amazing, it is like suddenly the connection speed has doubled and cache size increased dramatically. Opera earned its title 'The fastest browser on earth' once again.
Apple has nothing to fear
FlydogAZ 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
I'm surprised at how bad this browser is. It does not automatically resize pages to fit. Manually resizing them is a hopelessly futile exercise; it is jittery and the page never quite zooms in or out to the correct size. The other controls are just not very intuitive. As far as speed, it seems slower in wi-fi. Not much difference in 3g. Sometimes there is a split second delay that is not there with Safari. In sum, a huge miss.
Awesome features, needs some tweaks.

Opera for iPhone is here; it's fast; it remembers passwords (unlike some iPhone browsers); and it has both a quick-link start page AND well-implemented tabs. The zooming and scrolling is rapid, and very, very fluid. Too fluid, in fact. Unlike every other iPhone app I have used, I can't scroll in a straight line while reading a news site. Hope they can fix that. Having a couple problems loading sites that work fine in Mobile Safari ... maybe because Opera routes & compresses data through their own servers? Also, PDFs open in .... Safari. Hmm. Wonder why. If I could set this as my default browser, I would.
Opera mini

This app is totally awesome... It's so much better than safari!
Doesn't Function
tjbode 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
Every time I launch the app it just pops up a blank screen with "Opera Mini" and a spinning loading icon. Nothing ever happens. I do not know what is wrong, but until it it fixed Opera Mini receives 1 star.
First Review!

I am surprised Apple approved Opera for the iPhone. That being said, the browser is very fast and intuitive, and time will tell wether it becomes my main mobile browser. Plus, it's free so you can't go wrong.
Doesn't work
Battousai8728 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
Just sits on load screen
Loads site faster but they looks terrible.
rbl00 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
I certainly does load webpages faster than Mobile Safari, but the pages look terrible. The images look pixelated and the text is all jagged. The standard way a browser works is gone too, when you tap on a link expecting it to follow that link it doesn't, instead it zooms in and then you need to tap on it again to follow the link, annoying. I've also found that a lot of sites look messed up where text is wrapping in the wrong spot and content is overlapping, it seems to not render sites properly (or at least not the same as Mobil Safari, which to me looks to be the right way).
Seriously?
Bsneddz 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
Very disappointed. Of course it's easy for Opera to load pages quickly when it loads the WAP versions. Without zooming into any text it's absolutely unreadable making it almost worthless. Even unzoomed you can make out text in mobile safari. Opera has a long way to go before I consider reinstalling this app.
Letdown
Lanigiro 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
I had hoped that this would be as fast as shown in videos. Instead, it seems to be about three times slower, it doesn't have the polish of Mobile Safari, and it's way less...graceful in loading pages. This is all from a iPhone 3gs with 3g on btw, if it matters. It also seems to format pages as if it were just a regular non-smartphone. The pages just don't look near as good as in Safari. Maybe some updates will fix all of this?
DISSAPOINTMENT
Meebo Inc. 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
What kind of picture (and page in general) rendering is that? Why are page elements missing? Why is there only 2 zoom sizes? Where is zoom-out in landscape? No tap on the status-bar to go to the top. Not worth the transition from Safari.
Definetly mini
Derekscrazy 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
Not a replacement for safari. It still feels too much like the "mobile web" for me. I won't be using this browser when safari is such a better experience.
Wicked Fast, HORRIBLE Rendering
Baxterdown 2.0 stars Version: 5.0
Pages load very fast. Rendering is about 80% of what websites should look like. I went to three sites with dropdown menus I visit regularly. One behaved strangly, I couldn't get the other two to work. The dropdown menus simply would not appear no matter what I tried. Sorry Opera, the fat lady came close by it didn't sing.
Fast it a Understatement-Best Browser on the iPhone to date!

A Great Browser for the iPhone and it FREE
Don't fix what's not broken.
Talkaboutdesogm 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
Don't get me wrong i think that apple approving this app is great but there are so many things that are wrong about this App. Stick with safari.
Finally!
zer0hvk 5.0 stars Version: 5.0
I'm glad this was approved by Apple and I'm really glad it got developed, even though Safari is a masterful mobile browser, there's a thing or two it can learn from Opera Mini.
Not relacing Safari
8:28 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
Pages zoom in annoying. Not at all as smooth as Safari. Videos embedded in pages that use flash don't work. They do in Safari fo iPhone. (i.e. nytimes.com) It looks clunky. It is fast but the experence is nothing like Safari. Blah. This is blah.
Clunky, doesn't improve on Safari
John_Boy_84 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
I read about this online and thought iId try it out. Maybe the compression aspect would be worth it on EDGE, but I can't see a reason to stop using Safari. Zooming in and out was clunky compared to pinch zooming in Safari, and scrolling around on a page was nowhere as smooth.
Does not render well
cmal 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
It badly renders pages.
doesn't work
the original cool ethan 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
I just get a white screen and with the little red bar at the top that says opera mini. FAIL
Not good enough
DKUSA 1.0 stars Version: 5.0
It's faster than Safari, but that's about all it got going for it. The rendering is HORRIBLE. When you are not zoomed in the sentences are unreadable lines - it looks like the screen is busted. The interface is pretty ugly too.
Wow, finally!
Choreilly 4.0 stars Version: 5.0
Nice initial release. It seems a bit faster than Safari. WIN!
