25 iPhone Games That Should Rock on the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Feb 2010 22:53:02 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/04/2010 at 2:53pm | by Andrew Hayward Apple's iPad announcement event didn't put an especially large focus on the gaming possibilities of the new device, but what was shown demonstrated how easily developers can modify current iPhone and iPod touch apps with just a brief time investment. We've already seen how updated versions of N.O.V.A. and Need for Speed: Shift will take advantage of the iPad, but it got us thinking -- how might some of the other best-selling or beloved iPhone games use the iPad's updated features to enhance the existing experience? Here's our list of 25 games we'd love to see enhanced for the iPad, but if you have your own dream app upgrade in mind, be sure to let us know in the comments! We love swapping Bejeweled 2's shimmering gems on our Macs, but we also dig the tactile feeling of actually flipping the gems in Read More

Updates Bonanza Including Updated Game Reviews
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Dec 2009 00:19:56 UTC +00:00
iTunes connect was down over the Holiday weekend, and as soon as it was back up, tons of updates went through the system. Many apps were updated, but a few were major stand-outs that were worth updating the reviews. Others are updates to games we already gave the highest rating to. Also there were updates to games we haven’t reviewed. The updated reviews: The second most updated app in the App Store, Doodle Jump, got another one. With so many updates this is already an absolute must. This update brings a new Yetti boss that appears around 30,000, and you have to defeat it to advance upwards. Implode! was already updated again bringing the total number of level to 100. The new set of ten is nature themed. Now there are boulders and hills that change the fall of the structures. A solid update making this game even better. As weird Read More

An app with everything but sales
Calendar16 Thu, 17 Dec 2009 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
TriplePoint PR's site has a post on their blog about Orbital [iTunes Link], an iPhone game released a while back that I presume is one of their clients. Obviously, they've done their job: we're talking about the game, which is $.99US or available in a lite free version [iTunes Link]. But they've also provided us with a little insight into just how things are going in the app's release, and the picture they paint says "not well." Oh, sure, it's been reviewed well, there's a little bit of buzz about it, and the game itself, says the firm, is good (trust them at your own risk, but they sound like they really do enjoy it). So what's the problem? It's not selling. To be fair, it is selling. They've sold less than 100,000 units, they say, and even half of that is a nice chunk of sales. But apparently that's not Read More
Orbital Free (Lite)
Calendar16 Tue, 01 Dec 2009 16:54:03 UTC +00:00
By Chris Hall on December 1st, 2009 Orbital Free, the lite version of Orbital, is out. Pick it up if you've never played the amazing full version. We haven’t posted many lite versions in the past, but the recent release of Orbital Free got my attention… not because the lite version does anything fancy, but because it’s an amazing game. I originally bought the game back in August after Jeff proclaimed that Orbital was the worlds hardest game. While I don’t necessarily think that it’s the worlds hardest (I wanted to strangle my phone after playing Jelly Car 2), it is a fantastic challenge that will keep you entertained for weeks. If you don’t have it already, pick up this lite version ASAP. You won’t regret it. Oh, and here’s a good quotable bit from the press release. “We’ve chosen to offer the free version of Orbital because of lessons learned Read More

ORBITAL Review: Orb-rybody Should Have This Game!
Calendar16 Tue, 10 Nov 2009 22:16:24 UTC +00:00
Tired of clones? Wait til you get your hands on this… ORBITAL is one of those games which has garnered critical acclaim and decent fanfare. It was only a matter of time ’til we cover this beautiful looking and equally satisfying game. Presentation While it isn’t as graphically intense as say Sandstorm, this futuristic game shines in its simplicity. From everything to the menu screen, with its bouncing logo and simple menus, to the in game details, such as the sparkle that follows each orb as its shot off. Not to be missed is the gravitational fields shown by the orbs. Orbital does an excellent job with the small details, the things that matter most. Controls The controls are simple. Simply tap anywhere on the screen to shoot off an orb where the cannon is aimed at. It’s as easy as that! Game play The goal of Orbital is to rack Read More

09.15.09        App Score: 9/10    , the new space-themed app from BitForge, is a stand-out game that can be played with one hand. It falls loosely into the brick-breaker category, but takes this straightforward concept adds a few new ideas, a bit of social media and packages it all up with gorgeous graphics. In fact, it’s so polished that I can’t immediately think of a better looking app. Don’t let Orbital’s shiny graphics and simple instructions lull you into thinking this iPhone app is child’s play. The rules are easy, but the gameplay takes strategy and skill. Much like pool, it’s all about the angles. If your aim is true, you’ll destroy each target after 3 collisions. If your aim is off, your orb will bounce erratically until the targets disappear with an explosion of color that almost eases the sting of losing. For most of this review, I’m only Read More

Kiss the day goodbye!
Jayisgames 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I had the pleasure of play testing this game before release and I LOVE IT. Bitforge has masterfully taken the core gameplay of Wouter Visser's awesome Gimme Friction Baby and created something all their own. Pure mode preserves the essence of the original, but adds lots of eye candy. Gravity mode adds gravitational forces that actually serve to evolve the classic gameplay in a way that is awesome fun! (The first time you arc a shot around a large hulking orb you'll know exactly what I'm talking about!) Higher scores are more frequent in Gravity mode, which will help to expand the audience for this under appreciated casual gameplay classic! Well done Bitforge!!
My new addiction

Firstly, the best looking game on my phone. Secondly, an achievement; improving on a game that many of the folks who played the original did not believe could be improved upon.

Fantastic.Game!

Love the challenge and the visuals.
Awesomeness and pure-fun
Beans83 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is definitely a "one more... one more type of game". As soon as you lose a game, you can't help but to boot up another round. Visually, this game is stunning with firework-esque explosions! Gravity mode is my favorite one of the two modes available because the ball can actually curve from it's straight line of path. In the future, I'd like to see some kind of level changing mode where after a few score increases, the background changes and you are progressed to another "level". On top of that, the music could vary from level-to-level also! Wishful thinking but that would make the game totally nuts!
The king of just 1 more time games!
sashicon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
(update) to play your music, open up the app, then call yourself from a nearby phone, let it ring atleast 3 times then decline, when the screen go's back to the game hit the sleep button(top button), once screen is black hit the home button twice, what ever you were playing last will play once you hit the play button, while playing the game minus the soundfx, only works for iphoners, obviously, enjoy. Make sure your home button is set to operate your iPod before hand This game is the definition of just one more time gameplay, it's like trying to eat one chip, or one small sip of an ice cold pepsi when your really hungry or thirsty, it's impossible not to play more than a dozen rounds before you look up. The compolsive need to want to play again and again is worth the asking price alone, moreless the strategic gameplay combined flawlessly with quik ingame interface, geo-esq retro grfx, and a total skill based game, with the possibility of chance, when most games of the genre are mostly versa. This is one of those games that when the price drops to 99cents even if you paid 10$, it won't rub you the wrong way, infact this is the type of game that you hope drops to 99cents so everybody can play. I can't stress enough how extreamly addictive this game is, and it's the perfect game for commutors etc. My only gripe is that you can't play your own music, and after two years you'd think it'd be not only common practice, but almost elementry by now for every dev to implement such a basic function, so if like me you just can't play a game without listening to your own music, I'd wait till the update for such a feature, or the price drops, as cool as this game is had I known, I wouldna got it, there is not one game I'll ever play more than 2-5 times on the go, if I can't play my own music, till I get home, and by that time it's offten forgotten. I think the biggest reason any really good game doesn't do well and you can't play your own music, is mostlikely do to that fact, take 7DA for example ,that has to be not only one of, if not the best 3ps to date, but also one of the most underated games in the store, and I haven't played that game in months souly do to the fact that you can't play your own music, and I'm not going to sit there and listen to poo with a gameface on. And it has nothing to do with the actual gameplay, but it has everything to do with the amount of time I'm willing to invest in it. And I don't know what type of idevice other ppl have to act like gamse on their device are the best thing since sliced bread, but I have the one that apple made, and when I get home I gave my 360,s3, TV, and my girlfriend, known to most ppl as the Internet( kidding) no I'm not:) instantly turning my device to a brick when dealing with anything other than a phone call. You and all the devs need to get with the concept of simple options, the inability to play your own music is not a simple thing that won't really annoy ppl, it's not something you can get to at a later time, having your own music option is just as important as the game it self, especially for ppl who are on the go/commutors, (planes, trains, busses, etc.) and if your selection of music was that pleasing to the general population you'd be a composer, or producer, and not some 2bit hole in the wall developer that just makes really cool games, stick to what you do best "making good games" and leave me/others to what I/ we do best, which is playing them because most of us have no life outside of the virtual world, and LISTINING TO MY/ ARE OWN FREAKING MUSIC!!!!! see how I capt the last part, that means I'm serious and trying to make a fundamental punchline statement, so take that...somebody? Take it.
Amazing
Kingbling97 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A must get. Flawed gameplay? Heck no! Thats what makes it challenging otherwise the game would be boring. The moving cannon and death line are nescisary to the gameplay. Buy it for sure
I CANNOT STOP PLAYING!
Moigle 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This my new favorite app. Such simple, fun, and addictive gameplay. THE perfect iPhone / iPod Touch game design. And it's beautiful to watch, as well. I only wish there was a scoring system that would rate you (or reward you) depending upon how many "multi-pops" you get during a game. Oh, and maybe a smart bomb. 
It's all been said...
++ Dave Mac ++ 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
awesome! addicting!
Awesome, one problem
Castle91 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is addictive. The multiplayer mode is an excellent adaptation of the original, as is gravity mode. The huge combos make it interesting very quickly. My only beef with it is that there is no way to turn the sound off. If the developer added this functionality, this game would be the best thing of my whole life. Really.
Addicting as hell.
pachi72 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The gameplay reminds me of Geometry Wars mixed with Bust-a-move. A few things I would like. 1. Be able to control the canon. 2. Enable or disable the grid background. 3. Diferent backgrounds. 4. Play your own iPod music.
My new favorite game
WokaWokaWoka 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very addictive!
If you're only going to buy one game this year,
Jackzila 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
MAKE SURE ITS THIS ONE! Honestly one of the best/best looking games on the iPhone. I'm not going to repeat all the other reviews. But this game really is great and like all great games, simple (as far as what's involved) and fun! Orbital FTW
4 HOURS STRAIGHT!
Jefufu DunHAM.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is so addicting you won't even pay attention to the time! The gameplay is so simple (people wanting to aim the turret - if they updated it like that, this game would lose it's fame and get BORING!) yet so addictive! I agree with the reviewer before me, this game is the KING  of one more time games on the ! It doesn't matter who you are, you are going to  this game! Just two suggestions -  Local scores so that I can compete with friends/wife  A way to mute the music - sometimes I just want the sound effects But other than those this game is DA BMB! 5/5  for sure!
Love it
nolemonplease 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I freakin love this game. The only reason that I was sad the iPhone did not support Flash was that I wouldn't be able to play the online version of this game. But here it is! The original gameplay and more!
Beautiful and fun
Ryan Ashcraft 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazing graphics and physics. Very addicting. Online multiplayer needs to be improved.
Way too Addicting
Voan23 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is exactly as the title states. It's way too addicting. I love the graphics and the simplistic gameplay. The multiplayer is great and now my mom is playing it and won't give me back my iPod. -.- There should be a desktop version. A new scoring system that gives bonuses for doubles, triples, quadrooples, etc. would be nice as well.
Just freaking excellent
Josylen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
One of my top two favourite games currently on my iTouch (along with Wolfenstein RPG). A really colourful and fitting tribute to Gimmie Friction Baby. I love that it keeps the simplicity of the first game, but gravity mode is by far my favourite mode. I seriously can't put it down once I start playing.
Excellent
hnsca 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very simple and impressive game! May be more expensive but very interesting.
Pretty Entertaining
iluviphone!!!!! 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wasnt sure about paying 3 bucks for it but what the heck. i did. its good. i see myself playing this game quite often. good graphics and sound effects :)
flawed gameplay
Kaigui 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game looks nice but I found the gameplay flawed. You can't control the cannon, it just sweeps back and forth and you tap when you think you've got a good shot. If your shot crosses the death line JUST ONCE your game is over. These two things combined can make for some rather short gameplay, especially given the fact that every shot turns into another obstacle to destroy and another obstacle that can bounce your shot back over the death line. If the developers introduced extra lives, more levels and the ability to aim the cannon this could be a game with a little more depth. Now it is just way too quick and casual for my tastes and shouldn't cost more than $.99.
awesome

Not that great
Shake Love 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I rewrote my review when I realized I was thinking of a different APP. this game isn't great it's ok for a short period of time. Ok buy for .99
Eh, just okay... could be better
Jordan Carlson 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Graphics are stunning, gameplay is intuitive, but I'm left wanting more. I like to reach goals and find I spend more time with games that allow me to achieve something. After ten minutes with this game, I lose interest because it's the same thing every time... Launch the sphere, watch it grow, make it disappear. I really think there is room to grow and hope an update will bring in more interesting gameplay. • Create levels/universes where the spheres orbit differently or move under different physical constraints • Create static objects • Create special orbes that explode into smaller orbes on contact and in the process knock out other orbes. • Peer-to-peer connectivity • More music I really see potential with this game but until the creators update the game, I don't see myself playing this unless I can't find anything else to do.
Not that great
Snowman5050 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Not as good as I hoped for lost interest pretty fast. Wish there was a lite version
Now, this is fun!
Citizen Cyber 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't play too many games on the iPhone, but I do love this one. It really hooks you and draws you in. It's like shooting fireworks, and the gravity feature adds an extra dimension to the game play. Be prepared to spend some cycles on this one.
A Simple Opinion
Okwaard 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Basically, this game is fun genius work. Plenty of entertainment, Good gameplay, a lot of addicting terms, great multiplayer, and neat online stuff. I'm a bit bad at the game, though. My excuse is that it's too hard, but it's not true. It takes time to get used to and, before you know it, you'll be hitting the hundreds. The game hasn't failed me yet and continues to thrill me. I gave it 4-stars mainly because I only give 5-stars to games or apps that completely astonish me in terms of excitement and addicting attributes. Anyways, try out the game. It was created professionally and is worth your pennies (or nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, etc.).
A Heavenly Experience!
thegamerocks06 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I can truly say that this game is the BEST game i have on my iPod! It's truly addictive nature has got me hooked! I enjoy the game's simplicity and it's soothing look! I enjoy this soo much! Thumbs up to the dev's!
