Apple showcases apps ready for the retina iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 16 Mar 2012 16:15:32 UTC +00:00
Apple wants you to enjoy that brand new retina iPad and has compiled a list of apps that are ready for the high-resolution display. It includes many of the big-name apps that were quick to get their app updated after Apple’s iPad announcement last week. The list includes entertainment apps, productivity apps, games, and more. Kelly spent the last three years covering mobile technology at places like BGR, Gizmodo and The Unofficial Apple Weblog. Before writing, she spent a few years working with and teaching others how to use Adobe Flash and Macromedia Director. Even earlier than that, she spent six years working on her Ph.D in Microbiology. When she's not writing, she can be found fishing the lakes and hiking the mountains of Western Maine with her husband and children. Read More

Apple's list will get you started, but it isn't exhaustive and only includes major apps like Tweetbot and Evernote. There are many other retina-ready apps that are not being showcased by Apple. We won't be able to list every single retina app in the App Store, but we will cover some of our favorites below. If there are any that we have missed, please let us know in the comments! And here is the list from Apple: Read More

A Collection of Sales to Start Your Weekend Right

The weekend is finally almost here, and before you settle in to listen to our podcast later today (you DO all listen to our podcast, right?) Unless you work on the weekends, in which case it's even more important to load up on some games to survive your laborious obligations. Crescent Moon Godzilab Telltale Games Konami Sega Miscellaneous These are the ones that stuck out to me, but of course there's always more sales and freebies to check out at AppShopper.com or on the free AppShopper app. For instance, EA is having one of their frequent sales on a bunch of games in their library. The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More
Gameloft puts games on sale for Halloween
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Oct 2011 17:00:00 UTC +00:00
We've already pointed out Sega's Halloween sales in the App Store and now Gameloft has announced deals of its own: most of its titles are on sale for just 99 cents. Unfortunately the pickings are slim, but a few good titles can be found, including the official Uno app, driving title Asphalt 6, World of Warcraft-esque Order and Chaos Online, Star Battalion, and the Gameloft Action Pack, which includes three games for a buck. I suspect we'll see more sales like this as the Halloween draws nearer. I'm not sure what it is about the holidays that make iOS developers want to put their apps on sale, but that's not a complaint. It's always nice to get inexpensive apps for even less than usual. Read More

Plenty Of Bargains From Gameloft This Halloween
Calendar16 Wed, 26 Oct 2011 14:30:04 UTC +00:00
By Jennifer Allen on October 26th, 2011 No tricks, just treats in this sale. Never one to miss an opportunity to offer some great price reductions, Gameloft has announced a sale in honor of Halloween. Six games in all are on offer at a bargain price of $0.99 each. The selection is a bit of a mixed bag, however. For the kids and general movie tie-in fans, there’s the choice of Shrek Forever After available in both iPhone and iPad varieties. The same discount is offered for the rather dubious Iron Man 2, again with a choice of iPhone or iPad. We’d recommend giving those two a miss. However, do consider MMORPG which is a pretty special homage to World of Warcraft. Racing fans may want to consider , the iPhone adaptation of the popular getaway driving console title. There’s a discount for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater clone too but it Read More
'Worms Crazy Golf' Review – A Hole in Worm
Calendar16 Mon, 24 Oct 2011 12:00:57 UTC +00:00
I have a weird amount of respect for the Worms franchise because not only has it lasted for almost two decades, it has consistently been a solid, albeit unchanging experience. The problem is, I've never actually been able to really get into the games, but with Team17's Worms Crazy Golf [$2.99 / HD], it's the first new experience that takes the oddness of the franchise and converts it into something a little easier to pick up and play. If you've ever played any of the Worms games dating back to the Amiga, you should have a good idea of what to expect with a golf game. The difference is that you're only controlling one worm instead of a battalion and your goal isn't to crush the opposing team, it's to hit a ball into a hole. The same control scheme from other Worms iOS ports comes into play here, you can Read More
We've heard some rumblings lately about Order & Chaos Online [$6.99] accounts getting hacked, and the attacks were recently confirmed by our pals over at PocketGamer. Order & Chaos, if you're unfamiliar, is Gameloft's fairly blatant riff on World of Warcraft, complete with characters, monsters, and areas that might look a more than a little familiar to anyone who has played WoW before. Anyway, the cause of this security breach as well as how deep this rabbit hole goes has yet to be revealed, although Gameloft says they're actively investigating. A thread on the official Order & Chaos forum indicates that players of both mobile and Facebook versions of the game have been hacked. If you've ever played Order & Chaos and you're the kind of person who still uses the same password for everything, it's a good idea to change all your others. While you're at it, check out this Read More

Gameloft Sticking with Universal Builds for New Releases
Calendar16 Fri, 19 Aug 2011 12:00:22 UTC +00:00
If you’ve noticed a trend with most of Gameloft’s new releases having Universal support over the past few months, it isn’t just a coincidence. Talking with Pocket Gamer during the Gamescon ’11 conference in Germany, Gameloft PR Manager Gregory Wintgens stated that from here on out the iOS mega-developer plans to “release everything as Universal” rather than the long standing practice of having separate versions for iPhone/iPod touch and the iPad. Starting with Order & Chaos Online [$6.99] back in April, Gameloft has been releasing almost all of their games as Universal builds. Now, due to your keen sense of detail, you might be saying “Hey! Not ALL of their recent releases have been Universal, I’m calling shenanigans!”, and you would be correct. This is because certain licensing agreements don’t allow for Universal builds, thus some new releases will still come with two separate versions. Also, I think there were a Read More
In case you didn't know, Unity provides the glue that makes a considerable amount of iOS games work. It's a game engine, development environment, and multi-platform publishing tool rolled into one easy to use package. (You can read all about it here.) The magic behind Unity is what brings the world of Aralon [$4.99] to life, and what allows you to level up in Order & Chaos Online [$6.99]. Similarly, it's what allows Gameloft to take Order & Chaos and seamlessly turn it into a Facebook game. The engine isn't limited to 3D either, it's what's behind fantastic 2D platformers like Max and the Magic Marker [99¢] and too many other games to list. Recently, Unity 3.4 was released which brings a whole boat load of new features, functionality, and other tweaks. So many, in fact, that it's hard to pick out which to highlight. Personally, I'm excited for better water Read More

Get Your iOS Swashbuckle On With Gameloft's Backstab
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Jun 2011 17:24:34 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/23/2011 at 9:24am | by Andrew Groen You'd be forgiven for mistaking the recently released iOS game Backstab for a mid-level PSP game, but it's actually the latest surprise from the iPhone 3GS/4 hardware. Companies like Gameloft continue to push the graphical envelope on the system, and if Backstab is any indication there's plenty of room left for games to grow on the platform. Backstab is a game very much in the same topical vein as Pirates of the Caribbean, while its gameplay seems to resemble the Assassin's Creed series with its copious amounts of climbing and stabbing. This is something of a refreshing new take for Gameloft as it's not an obvious ripoff of any single game. It takes inspiration from multiple games, but after Order & Chaos and Sacred Odyssey we're happy with just about anything original. Backstab was released earlier today with iPhone/iPod and universal versions that Read More
Order & Chaos Online
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Jun 2011 16:27:35 UTC +00:00
I was really challenged by the idea of anyone pulling off a true MMORPG on iOS devices. who is going to be the first company to bring something like World of Warcraft to the iPhone. Well, Gameloft is definitely up to the challenge with the game “Order & Chaos Online” . First I will tell you some details about this iPhone app, and let you know the distinct features that make the iPhone game worth playing on your iPod Touch. There is not much of a story in Order & Chaos, you seem to be mostly questing. There are two defined story lines. You can fight for order or for chaos. You choose from four races to design your character, and you can design up to four characters on one account. The races are the humans and elves fighting for order, and the orcs and the undead fighting for chaos. You Read More
Gameloft starts the Father's Day app sales
Calendar16 Fri, 17 Jun 2011 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
I suspect we'll see quite a few app sales pop up over this upcoming Father's Day weekend, partly because any holiday these days tends to attract a few lowered prices in the App Store, and partly because there will likely be a few lucky dads out there picking up a new iPhone or iPad 2 for their parenting trouble. Gameloft's the first company with a slew of sales on, including Final Fantasy ripoff Eternal Legacy, NFL 2011, Real Soccer 2011, WoW ripoff Order and Chaos Online, and Spider-man: Total Mayhem, all for the low, low price of just US 99 cents. Gameloft also has a Twitter contest going on, but it requires a pretty gnarly retweet, so you'll have to decide if a $10 iTunes card is worth spamming all of your followers. Or do what I do, and keep a separate Twitter account just for silly RT contests like this Read More
Gameloft Throws A Kickin' $.99 Sale For Father's Day
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Jun 2011 19:31:18 UTC +00:00
It’s written in the United States’ constitution that every holiday must be honored with a sale or two on the App Store. No joke -- it’s a new law according to yet another wiki page that I just finished vandalizing. If you're interested, the law is sandwiched between the “freedom of press” thing and that other law about how all American babies should be named after me. Anyway, it’s with great honor that I tell you about Gameloft’s massive $.99 Father’s Day sale, a sale meant to stir your loins and your wallet. I can’t pin down a rhyme or reason for what games are being offered at their discounted rates, but hey, they’re cheap and I think that’s all that matters at the end of the day. Here’s the list. The first link you’ll see is connected to a write-up of ours about the game, while the second will take Read More
Game Time: My Life as a Seven-Foot Elf Warrior
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Jun 2011 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
Posted 06/09/2011 at 1:30pm | by Nic Vargus I’ve never been big into MMOs. I don’t want to pay a subscription and the hanging carrot gameplay and ominous warnings from friends (“promise me you’ll never play an MMO”) made them sound less than appealing. So when I heard Gameloft was making a World of Warcraft spinoff (which you can get here), I didn’t really care. My only previous experience with MMOs was a long time ago. While I loved it, I had since parted ways with the huge world and didn’t intend on returning. But then I read about how Order and Chaos had made like a trillion dollars in four seconds, and I knew what had to be done. I had to go back. Not literally, thank God. But after a few minutes of pondering the races (the Skeletal Undead, fat martians Ogres, Humans, and Elves) the choice was clear. I Read More
Some people might have chuckled at the resemblance of Gameloft's Order and Chaos Online to the popular World of Warcraft. It's actually a near clone of the very popular Blizzard Entertainment title, squeezed down into the iPhone. But it turns out Gameloft will be the one who laughs last. The game has reportedly already brought in a million dollars in revenue, just in its first 20 days of existence. That's pretty impressive. I presume that total includes the game's actual sale price of US$6.99, along with any other in-app purchases made. Of course, that initial revenue will probably be hard to replicate, but there's definitely a following for this one. That will encourage Gameloft to support it (more on that in a second), and it may even encourage other companies to step up with their own MMO titles for iOS. Including Blizzard eventually? We can only hope. Speaking of that support, Read More

JUST SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR FAMILY & JOB RIGHT NOW!
Scott Daly 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Yes it's that much fun and the best time waster ever! To date, the App Store has had very few massively-multiplayer-online (MMO) games, and even fewer quality MMOs. Gameloft is the first to change that in a blatant attempt to cash in on the success that popular MMOs on the PC and Mac have had. The company’s first iOS MMO, titled Order & Chaos, can be downloaded right now practically worldwide. It also claims the title of being one of Gameloft’s first universal titles (a trend we hope they continue), so you can buy one version and play it on your iPhone/iPod touch and iPad.The $6.99 price-of-entry gets you a three-month subscription. If you are inclined to waste, uh spend, more time in the world of Order & Chaos, then options for additional game-time are $.99 for a month, $1.99 for three months, or $2.99 for six months. These are reasonable prices compared to the typical standard of a $15/month subscription. A concern some may have since this isn’t a free game is that gold and “runes” for special in-game boosts can be purchased for hefty sums through in-app purchases.Four races, a thousand skills, and two-thousand pieces of equipment await you in an obviously World of Warcraft-inspired online world. Early impressions are pointing to a conclusion that Order & Chaos gets the job done for a simple, decent-looking iOS MMO fix, but isn’t particularly deep and lacks lore/story.
Awesome!
Serinbow 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Been following this game since they had info on toucharcade and I'm excited its finally here! Graphics are great, and so far its enjoyable to play. For the cost of a large whopper combo, how can you not buy this game? This MMO is going to be huge!
PLEASE FIX

Great start .. Just a few Adjustments need to be made
Axle daze 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's a wow clone.. If ya like wow you will like the game and of what I have played I like a lot but.... You terms of agreement should be up front before purchase a lot of people aren't gonna agree w your invasiveness to there device and a few clauses are kinda creepy. In game purchase of gold and items is a big no no in subscription bases mmorpgs 1 it's shady 2 playing field is not even those w more money will simply move ahead and that's not good for a balanced mmo Although there are some great things w game it's a bit of a shady practice they are showing us out of the gate.before you buy know that you will be spending a ton catching up to those that have money to buy there position and make sure you are completely comfortable w there terms which hopefully you can find online. With that said it's a good game just be certain you know what your getting into. Giving one star for shady practices 5 if they adjust this.
The only game I've ever waited for on iOS
bernizz1e 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
It's a mini version of World of Warcraft so what's not to like about it when it comes to MMO fans

Great work. Best mmo given the restraints of a mobile device I'd still play this over guild wars or WoW
It could have been great...
Ddeschenne 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.8
This game could have been great if it weren't for the rampant programming errors which make hacking common and recurrent on the same accounts. The data stream was unencrypted for the first several months after the game was released and now, even after encryption, the code has been broken and hackers have open access. When one is hacked, gameloft does little to nothing to stop the hacker and restore the victims account. They seem completely incapable of fixing the holes in the system, and unable to track activity such that account restoration would be easy and quick. The other problem is that the items stolen by hackers, including gold coins, are purchased by the user with real world money, so when one is hacked, they are potentially, and in some cases actually, losing thousands of real world dollars, which are not being refunded. Basically, theft is rampant, unchecked, and unpunished. The graphics are great, but for some reason the developers chose to use rather pornographic looking nude "harpies" with full frontal nudity in your face the whole time you are fighting them. The game is somewhat fun, though it gets boring after you level your characters to 60 and have them fully geared. Not much new to do. The game is advertised for ages 9 and up and the terms of use agreement lays out rules forbidding profanity, sexual dialogue, etc, but the developers did nothing in the programming to restrict these, as other games have successfully done, and their moderator function is a joke - nothing is done despite ample evidence of people talking about criminal sexual activity in global chat windows where everyone, including children, can see it. Profanity is rampant on aloof the servers. In general, the game could have been great, but the developers have missed the mark on many frontside they are doing little to nothing to fill the gaps.
Excellent

Amazing game very addictive but the only problem is that the pets need to attack.
Awesome
Puzzlebot769 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.8
This game is awesome but just one suggestion, instead of making the spell ring a circle put it as line across the bottom of the screen because it would just be more convenient for players.Other than that the game is awesome.
Great Casual MMO

Pkuytgfr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.8
Enjoyable questing fun. Highly addictive. Only criticism is the length of time to fix bugs (poison antidote quest, mushroom wyrgest quest, boy following character in spider woods)
Good game

HGLESSER 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.8
Have no idea what game the 4 and 5 star reviewers are playing -this title cannot be the one they are writing about... At first, game was probably good... Now, with more and more players, Gameloft's servers are overloaded. Constant server interruptions... Numerous "cannot connect" messages... A waste of time. Plus this is certainly NOT family fare, Where some of the gamers got their filthy mouths is beyond belief! There does not seem to be any attempt at ensuring a clean game environment and the game play is hindered by so much crude behavior. Stay with WoW and save your money until Gameloft can address their server issues and some form of game ethics control is brought to bear, Great graphics, a somewhat usable interface cannot save this title from the garbage heap.
