Path Adds Fresh Security Features to Mobile App
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Apr 2012 13:04:57 UTC +00:00
by Path, which drew criticism in February over privacy breaches, upgraded the security for its mobile app on Monday. The iOS and Android upgrade to 3.1.1, announced on Path’s blog, includes the hashing of user contact data so such information will be unintelligible to hackers, at least in theory. Such data, includes last names, phone numbers, email addresses, Twitter handles and Facebook IDs. Path, a social network that limits users’ networks to 50 people, initiated the new security features after a developer in February revealed that the Mac OS X version of the mobile app was sending users’ entire address book to Path’s servers without telling users. The revelation prompted Path CEO Dave Morin to issue an apology a few days later. Later that month, reports emerged that Path wasn’t the only company appropriating users’ address books — dozens of other apps for Apple’s iOS were, as well. Apple addressed the Read More
Path is out with version 2.1 of its mobile social networking app and it has a bunch of new sharing features in time for SXSW 2012, including a new API for developers to tap into Path and allow users to share virtually all activity on any service. The first to utilize this API is Nike+ in a partnership with Path. Hooking up your Nike+ account with your Path account can automatically share running activity with your friends on Path and optionally push it a step further and share on Facebook or Twitter. Path will show your running trail on a map and where along that trail people cheered you on. As usual, users following along with your life can smile or love this activity and comment natively within the app as well. This is just the beginning of what the developer API can offer and just like Facebook’s Graph API for Timeline, Read More

Path soups up photo features with iPhone app update
Calendar16 Thu, 02 Feb 2012 00:56:17 UTC +00:00
Path, the mobile app for cataloging your daily activities and sharing them with a relatively small circle of contacts, has updated its app for the iPhone with the debut Wednesday of version 2.0.5. The key new part of the update is the addition of a new effect called “Depth” that brings what’s known as tilt-shift capabilities to Path’s photo taking feature. Tilt-shift photography lets you adjust the depth of field to take photos in which certain items are in focus and others are out of focus. The proliferation of affordable, high quality digital cameras has made tilt-shift photography increasingly accessible and popular with mainstream shutterbugs, so it’s a nice addition to the Path app, which has had a big photo-sharing component since its inception. An example of tilt shift photography effects. It bears mention that there are a number of dedicated tilt-shift apps for iOS devices already on the market, and Read More

Unlike iOS applications, which are basically created for two form factors, Android apps need to be developed with dozens (if not hundreds) of device-types in mind. This is on top of the inconsistent operating system releases still mucking things up. While all of this fragmentation is a headache for developers, ignoring a platform with 50 percent market share would ultimately lead to their peril. My Android phone has been one of the few turning points in my blogging career. With Internet access, a hotspot and dozens of blogger-specific apps, my Android is one smartphone that keeps me working at any time (by choice or circumstance). 2011 was a big year for blogger apps as some (like WordPress) improved on existing features, while others (like Tumblr) completely revamped their Android app from the ground up. As mobile blogging really settles into its own, Android’s become a perfect playground for a generation of ready chroniclers. WordPress made an early entry onto the Android Market, and has steadily improved its mobile blogging platform accordingly. As one of the most widely-used blogging services for professionals, WordPress has a responsibility to incorporate as much of the backend functionality into its mobile version as it possibly can. 2011 brought some noteworthy updates that make its app feel more like the web Read More

A Bunch of Android Apps that Don't Suck - The Next Web
Calendar16 Thu, 08 Dec 2011 20:22:43 UTC +00:00
The days of a mobile device living or dying on the strength of its operating system are gone. Now, it’s all about the apps. An OS will make it pleasant to use those apps, and will probably give you a reason to use the device more, but the real value-add is the apps available in the device’s ecosystem. Apple’s iOS is undoubtedly the king when it comes to sheer volume of class-A apps. The list of marquee apps for the platform that are simply delightful to use is long. That’s not necessarily the case for Android, where the lower barrier-of-entry for app makers can at times be difficult to wade through the crap to find the gold. That’s why this list of ‘Android niceties‘ is welcome. It’s a Tumblr, shared by developers Steven Troughton Smith and Sam Steele on Twitter that I feel is pretty packed with good examples of Android apps that don’t suck. The list Read More

Path, Timeline & Worship of The Self
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 18:30:00 UTC +00:00
An app called Path launched its version 2 do-over yesterday. "The smart journal that helps you share life with the ones you love," it calls itself now. I ignored this app until today. All I saw from version 1 was emoji spam in my Twitter stream. Let's take it as read that version 1 failed to catch on, hence version 2. How does an app help you "share life with the ones you love?" The tech "world," or "scene," or whatever it is, is in love with this app. It tingled with excitement when Path went "stealthish" in 2010. It launched later that year weirdly lacking in features, and the blogerati still fawned over it. What is it about Path? How does "love" arise from Objective-C and 3.5 inches of glass? By evoking the people in your life, of course. And Path does that, just as Facebook does. It's a life Read More
Path 2.0 now available, adds more social, less photos
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Nov 2011 16:37:23 UTC +00:00
Path, a photo-sharing social network, rolled out its 2.0 update today. The latest version moves Path beyond its photo-sharing roots and places an emphasis on smart, social journaling. The social network lets you friend 150 people, up from the 50-person limit it allowed in earlier versions. The familiar options to share photos and videos are still available, but now Path lets you share your thoughts, the music you like, your location and the people you’re with. You can even tell everyone when you wake and when you go to sleep. Path describes itself as a social network for personal, smart journaling. It limits your friends list, so you can have a close, personalized experience. You can freely share your thoughts and ideas that are too intimate for larger networks like Twitter or Facebook. The new Path app has a neat, clean interface, but there are a few bugs that diminish the overall experience. I used the iOS version and was unable to share a photo from my library. Hopefully, this and other minor glitches will be fixed in a quick Read More

Android proves a promising crossroad for app developers expanding beyond iOS. Path has finally introduced its photo-sharing app to the Android Market with an open beta version. A couple of familiar apps were also upgraded this week: Skype added video chat and Foursquare added notifications ahead of iOS users. Path, a California-based startup, has taken a different approach to mobile photo sharing. It’s all about privacy, limiting you to 50 of your nearest and dearest friends. The idea is to have a controlled sharing experience, initially restricting photo-sharing only within its app. Broader sharing capabilities for porting photos to Twitter has been added to the iOS version through an extra app called With, but this week’s Android launch is an early version with fewer features. Add location and friend tags to your photo uploads, with emoticons to indicate how you feel about a posted picture. You can also chat with friends Read More

Path: Social networking app comes to Android
Calendar16 Mon, 04 Jul 2011 19:22:27 UTC +00:00
By Prasoon Kumar, The Mobile Indian, New Delhi, July 04, 2011 Category: Applications Sub Category: Utility Path, the social networking app available for some months on iOS, has now been released on the Android Market as well. Those who are new to the news about Path, need to know that it created a buzz at the time of its launch because it was a social networking app, yet it restricted the number of contacts to just 50. It was launched, by design, for the users who preferred to use a quieter social networking app. It has most of the social networking features that users look for in a mobile app, and users of both the versions — Android and iPhone will be able to interact with one another with the app or the web version of the app. Although Path has followed the predictable path of launching the iOS app first, Read More
Path for Android now available for download - TNW Apps
Calendar16 Fri, 01 Jul 2011 16:20:48 UTC +00:00
It’s been a long, interesting road for Path. If you’re not familiar, Path is a mobile-based social network where you’re encouraged to share to a small circle of friends. It is hard-limited to 50 people in each person’s network, and it’s based primarily on the sharing of photos and videos. I’ve been in the Path for Android beta for the past few weeks. It’s what got me addicted to the services that Path is offering. However, it was closed and by invitation only so I couldn’t share that with you. Now, according to the blog over at the Path site, it is available to all in the Android Market: We will continue to iterate and release updates with more features frequently. As we move through this beta period, expect things to improve rapidly. We first took a look at Path a few months ago, before the Android beta opened. Soon after, Path joined Read More

Glad it's finally on Android I've been interested in using Path for a while, so I'm glad that it's not iPhone only anymore. I agree that it requests an unreasonable number of permissions on Facebook, but I just promptly went to my Facebook app privacy settings and revoked most of them... not the way it should work, but easy enough to do.

This uses Facebook to find people you know and create a list of people you might want to add to your feed.

"...private way to share. " With Facebook only login? Nonsense; crap; nothing private about that.

Why facebook authentication? I would possibly like to try this app, but with the only authentication option being through facebook, I am turned away.

Post settings should be in the app, not the website and enable apps2sd

Should ask permission before posting to Facebook I took a photo and was surprised that it got automatically posted to my Facebook wall. The app should explicitly ask me before posting to Facebook. I thought the point of Path was to have more privacy for my photos.

When you add someone from Facebook it posts to their wall (so all the people you didn't invite can see). WTF?! #fail To dependent on FB. Uninstalled.

Requiring Facebook Connect to select friends? FAIL. The whole point of this is to do something different and focused, and without fb. Uninstall.

Beautiful app, but occasionally uploads two copies of a single photo. (Same tags and everything.)

Doesn't work properly. Loses posts, needs Facebook, too many permissions. Use Google+ Circles instead, far simpler & more flexible than Path.

dissapointing Looking for an alternative to poolparty. This isn't it. The problem is it shares your photo with all your friends in your list, which makes it no different from posting to facebook. Theres some pictures I want to share with friends and others just with family. Poolparty did this perfectly. Also for some reason I can never be able to enter in a text about the picture I'm posting. Compared to the IOS version this is incredibly lacking. Shame on them for giving Android users half assed product.

potentially good Couldn't get friends to use it so I waited for a Pool Party invite but now Slide is getting shutdown so I'm trying Path out again. Can you really only share photos taken with the stock camera in the app? Definitely should allow other photos to be shared because other apps have greater features than the stock Android camera app.

Great Potential... While this app is currently really only 'pretty' and it's functionality is at a VERY BARE minimum, this app could potentially rock. 3 stars for potential, (it currently really deserves a 1 star rating). It could earn 5 stars if out of beta it is at the level of the iphone app. I am looking forward to using this... but at this point (in beta) it is a waste of space.

Couldn't get friends to use it so I waited for a Pool Party invite but now Slide is getting shutdown so I'm trying Path out again. Can you really only share photos taken with the stock camera in the app? Definitely should allow other photos to be shared because other apps have greater features than the stock Android camera app.

Looking for an alternative to poolparty.

I took a photo and was surprised that it got automatically posted to my Facebook wall. The app should explicitly ask me before posting to Facebook. I thought the point of Path was to have more privacy for my photos.

Do the devs have what it takes? Path has the POTENTIAL to take me away from foursquare but it needs better support. I have used the iPhone app and it is sexy. Get better servers and keep the platform bias subdued and you'll have an awesome mobile social network.

its a cool app but every now and then it does something to tick me off.. i hate that you cant delete a post like if i have a typo and i missed a word i cant edit or delete it.. and lately its been reposting my moments so i will have 7 moments that says the same thing ANNOYING!! and when it auto update my locations it never say the right location. so if those thing will get fixed i will be a happy camper ^_^

Path bills itself as private place for your "close" friends, and yet they added a search function to app so anyone can find me? Better when ppl can only find u through their OWN contacts. Also don't want path uploading my contacts to their server. Why necessary? I don't want to be friend requested by everyone like Facebook. Very nice layout & functions though.

If you're going to release an app for Android then develop it properly or don't release it at all. This Android app is basically a crippled version of the iPhone version. No filters when you take/share photos. Unable to delete posts. Don't bother. I wish I had two more hands, so I could give you four thumbs down!
Lani 0.0 stars
Seriously, why can't the User go back and edit posts? There is NO labeling of posts with regard to time and date, keeps double and triple posting and several rimes I've been creating a post and the phone rings or I get a text and the post disappears!! This is so shameful how inferior Android apps are to iPhone. I'm really starting to think Apple is paying developers to screw up Android apps on purpose. There can be NO OTHER explanation for why NOTHING works on Android. Ridiculous...
Jace 0.0 stars
Really fun to use, interesting concept. Kind of primitive in its whole. I have been using it for a few days and I find that it doesn't let you scroll easily. There should be a way to filter through different types of posts, such as pictures only or posts only. There may be something that is more journal-post focused, as currently the actual content takes up only about 60% of the width in a caption, making it difficult to separate from replies and is beginning to feel cramped, especially with longer posts.

I like the idea of keeping a notepad with me and sharing some of my thoughts. It very clear, very easy to use. The cons I have would be that the app is a wee too much iPhonish on an android device. e.g. the "music" part, search on iTunes is not very appropriate. But in sum, I love this app.

Great idea and hopefully will work well soon but some big problems...multiple notifications of same update with Samsung Galaxy S2. Also keeps duplicating uploads which would be fine if you could delete the duplicate - but you can't! So at the moment the nice sounding "journal" its advertised as looks more like a scrapbook with mistakes and duplicates everywhere...

Once we have video support and filters for pics should be a more complete app. Haven't yet been able to share a place despite being able to see location in google maps.....Really like the presentation, beautiful layout. Simple, and relatively easy to use.

The latest update seems to have spoiled the view counter. It says 7 friends viewed but when I click into the post, it says 1 friend viewed. Pls fix. The counter is Path's sticky factor. It's also got notification problems. I get notified twice per event. On Nexus S, Android 4.0.3

Good app. The android version now lets you delete moments. Hit the smiley button and there should be a trash can right next to the comment field. Bug (double notifications, multiple uploads, slow notifications) and server downtimes (these are the worst) MUST be addressed asap. I'm on the verge of uninstalling the app. Also, why does iPhone get all the love? Filters? Videos? 3 stars for the concept. Minus 3 for the service and features.
Slick Willis 0.0 stars
Keep getting "unable to connect to server" error. Without any type if server status page I'm not sure if it's the app our their servers. The ios version is 10x better. I tried to get a hold of Path for assistance but they haven't replied to several of my emails and tweets. Also the communication if what's going on is terrible. There is no server status or layout for future update plans for users to look at. This is very frustrating considering how much I WANT to like it, but can't because of the bugs.

A list of pro's, then a list cons - w/ fix/add requests: Pros: 1. Beautiful layout, responsive to touch commands and quick loading. 2. Path timeline beats facebook's timeline any day. It is slick and concise. 3. Photos uploads, and photo fetches are fast. 4. Post-to features are fast. 5. Notification settings yield precise push notifications. Cons: 1. Music listening: There's no iTunes on Android. C'mon guys. 2. Allow edit of posts on the website. Not necessary to fully implement the app as a website page, but it'd be nice to edit your own path as far as emotions, deletions, and statuses like listening to, people you are with, thoughts. 3. Please add Google+ to list of Post-to sites. Please. 4. Please add upload/view Video feature. Video is a big part of our "Paths" IRL. lol :P Thanks for the app and the work!

Path for Android is ridiculous near Path for iOS, and I can't see a reason why the iOS app is so much more beautiful. C'mon guys, you can do better.

This is what I wanted in a social network. Pls fix the issue with LG GT540 comments/emo black popup menu goes out of screen towards very left.

[I have a HTC Inspire] This app has a really nice design and function, but it could use improvements. Auto location doesn't work, which is a huge problem. It doesn't seem like it's pinging the GPS correctly. When I checked the option to sleep, it showed me as somewhere 40 miles away. Settings accessible only through web page, not the Android app. The Android version doesn't contain the Lenses option that iPhone has.
Jon 5.0 stars
Im in love with Path, it is so fast it beats fb! And on top of that it updates fb and twitter as well.. all in one place.
Manis 3.0 stars
I like the network itself very much, but the app could be much better. It looks like they took the iOS version and made it run on Android. Very sad. It'd have much more potential! And there still is no ICS-glory :(
andreas 1.0 stars
So after all the fuss about Path mining user's address books, they provide T&Cs after registering. Don't have formal accept or deny AND CRITICALLY don't provide their privacy policy. Total fail, shame on you for dragging 33 other social networks into this mess.

Galaxy S 4g always fc's while posting and checking in at same time? Isn't that the point? Photos don't attach either..

I actually rather love this li'l social blogging tool. I've used several different blogs over the years, so I wasn't sold on it at first--but I registered to see a friend's video, and just immediately fell for the smooth, almost liquid-like interface. Awesome.

I've been trying to log in on galaxy tab.7.0 plus but error msg always shown is 'FAILED TO LOG IN AT THIS TIME. PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER.' So when exactly is the BEST time to log in? I can never log in to Path, then!

Es un todo en uno, facebook + twitter + foursquare, ojala lo desarrollen para otros sistemas operativos, con eso seria 5 estrellas.

Since my phone screen got supported I really enjoy Path. I like the feature to share posts to other networks a lot. But only one thing is not working for me well. I can't listen to the songs I want to share. Some are playing, some are not. I don't know what causes that. But everything else is really good. I can't compare it to the iPhone version, cause I don't have one. So, I'm giving 4 stars for the current version.

Path has had some bumps in the road, but the developers/owners seem to adapt quickly and learn from mistakes and feedback. I'd like to see G+ integration (social and pics), Flickr, and more in depth expansion of gamification features. Great app for sharing your social media brand with a more intimate circle of friends, or broadcast across a broader spectrum via integration with Twitter, Foursquare, and Facebook.

The Android version sucks! Why so different from the iPhone version? And why don't we get the cool camera function and timely update? Ok, we got the update, but it is still nowhere near the capabilities of the iPhone version.

The app is pretty cool itself and almost better than any other social network I've been on, buuut it has too many glitches. It forecloses entirely too much and it doesn't play the songs I'm currently listening to. I would also love if it came with more features like messaging and things. besides that it's a really cool app!

I love this app! Very simple interface, easy to share what you are doing across multiple social networks or just keeping it to Path. I really like how pictures and videos are huge and easy to see. Notifying when you are sleeping and awake I thought was kind of pointless at first but I really enjoy it. It's cool to see when people actually go to bed, how many hours of sleep they got, and the quotes usually make me smile.

There are only two things I feel that are missing. 1. Sharing control (a la Google+) 2. Offline photos and chosing later which ones are worth uploading. Otherwise, by far the simplest and best photo app for android mounted on a private social network that keeps it to what's really important. Edit: It's three, actually. 3. The teardrop effect.

Glenn 4.0 stars
Great app but why is the android version so limited in capabilities as compared to the iOS version. I wish it had auto updating for location and the rest of ios features. Also the finding people in your phone address book does not work as smoothly as searching for a path user manually. Lastly the option to edit a picture would be nice. Otherwise this is an awesome concept and I use this app everyday, keep up on the improvements and you will have a more users migrate from other social networks.
Sherms 4.0 stars
Super simple. Exactly what social networking used to be. Facebook and such has become to complicated and cluttered. What would make Path amazing is if there was a way to isolate the types of post. To be able to only look at photos would rival instagram. Only look at commens would rival twitter. To only look at locations would rival foursquare . And all the above would rival Facebook and Google +...keep it up
Bastard 5.0 stars
I've been using Path on my Galaxy Nexus for a couple of months. Fast, sleek interface, just an all around beautiful app. I use it for pic sharing and commenting on Path alone or share on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Foursquare. The integration with these other services is simple, works every time, and is headache-free! I also love the added options of Sleep/Awake and posting songs links. The interface is so sleek and a pleasure to look at.

Its just another networking but I like the UI and adding songs feature. More often than having 'something on my mind' i prefer to listen to songs. Also woke up/sleeping is cool :D

I haven't been actively using it but I'm trying to move off facebook towards a more intimate network with my friends. I feel like path is great for that. Maybe add some things like "are you sure you want to _insert action here_ b/c I accidentally laughed when I thought I was winking! Otherwise it's fun and new!

This is a very good app. But i can't understand that this app drains my battery. It happens also on iphone. Now using my Galaxy W, i can edit the photo before upload it, which makes it more fun. Beside how it affects the battery, every thing else are good
Den 5.0 stars
I have not had many force closes as of late, plus the developers are working hard to catch the Android version up to the feature list of the iPhone version. This app works great on my D2G and it is a cool personal journal that you can use to share little and big moments with a select group of friends and family.

I've been unable to upload photo since I started using this app. Had to use Path desktop settings webpage to change profile pictures and cover photo. Even then it still won't accept photos with .png format. All of the photos that were failed to upload were the ones that's taken from the gallery, not directly from Path camera app. This app is great, but the difficulties in uploading photos make it sucks. I hope it'll be fixed soon.

Path is like a combination of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare all-in-one! And its phone app is amazing! It's fast and very convenient for a quick post. What I like about it the most is its very simple, but attractive platform. That + sign that throws out icons as you click it -- for you to share things -- was very creative and interactive. Also, the fact that you can share music that you're listening to! Pretty neat! I highly recommend this app for use to the full extent!

The App Path looks Great and did really impress me with the features.. Its snazzy and very cool..!! Right up there as far as the apps for social networking are concerned. Probably, Facebook needs to look into this particular app and see "How it needs to be done..!!" Cheers to the team and my congratulations to them to bring out such a marvel. Thank you. Keep it rolling..!! \m/

The application is simple by its design. Like the location search. But the problem is when I update my FB with this application, sometimes it will not posted in my FB wall this is the only thing that I faced as bug or something. Think the developers will clear this with in the latest version.
Cameron 4.0 stars
This app is simply fantastic. Its simple and lots of fun to use, I like it a whole lot more than Facebook. My only issue with this app is the location services. A lot of the time I'll say i'm going to sleep but it won't say in the right area and the same fit when I wake up. Our it will sometimes even get where i'm going to sleep right but I'll wake up somewhere different. Overall great app, just wish they would improve the location services.

Much more personal & private! It's a journal/social network in one! Just what I was looking for. Perfect for me and my family! Plus I can still share to Facebook if I choose and can very easily lock my thought/moment with the lock button. The only thing that would make it better would be notification sounds!

I have to admit at first I was like....stalker status!! But the security is actually pretty amazing and this app is really good for just jotting those little thoughts down, all the funny little things people say, for remembering why you took that picture of what seems like absolutely nothing! This app is genius!
半缘 4.0 stars
It costs too many data usage, more than instagram, Google reader and so on. I think this is huge and unacceptable. And notification is boring and fool. Last thing , wish could turn off wifi, start airplane mode automatically when "go to sleep".

I must say this was a pleasant surprise. Two things from five stars: No Instagram integration, and I can't seem to be able to delete posts...

It doesn't look like any thought was given to large screen devices (tablets). Screen rotation switches on a whim. Yes it looks great but functionality is lacking.

Best mobile social app yet. It's actually a pleasure to use. Only rated 4 stars because pics taken with Path fail to send if you try and attach it to an email

Under intermittent wifi connection the behavior of the buffering is weird. First you don't know what is in the queue so you end up with duplicates. There is no progress bar of uploads neither so the UX is kinda difficult to get use to
Sergio 5.0 stars
It's a bit harsh on the battery and it also needs Google+, instagram sharing. As well as to manage notifications. Too many icons on the notification panels. Add LED support too.

This is by far the most beautiful, yet simple, design when it comes to quick social interaction apps that I've seen. Love it so far. Though I can see how the lack of marketing of it could cause there to be not enough users to make it fun. I'll definitely recommend it to my friends.

I am addicted to Social Media. I have Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+. I love the other things like Instagram and YouTube! Path I would say is better than Google+. It's my third favourite social network. I like the options it has to post to your "wall/profile" page. Mobile layout of Facebook is still better when viewing the sidebar options. It takes some getting used to, but I don't truly consider it overly addicting. I think as time goes by, I'll become a little more addicted with using Path, but time will tell. I would have liked it if the songs played all the way through and not just 30 seconds or how ever long it runs. I haven't tried all the features in terms of posting of what I'm doing or going, etc. But I can say this, the sleeping for how long post is a little odd but interesting. I think Facebook & Twitter should get some ideas from Path. My Big Three: Twitter, Facebook, Path.
