How a pilot uses the iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 17 Apr 2012 13:00:08 UTC +00:00
Foreflight takes a navigation chart and overlays current satellite weather imagery, in this case, fog in San Francisco. It’s become somewhat controversial when and how air passengers use mobile devices. But the idea of pilots using them, specifically Apple’s iPad, is gaining broader acceptance. At least four major airlines are either testing or allowing pilots to replace their flight manuals and paper charts with the 9.7-inch, 1.5-pound tablet. Most passengers probably don’t care what their pilot uses to fly the plane as long as they arrive on time and with as little turbulence as possible. But I can tell you as someone who lives with a pilot, using his iPad to prepare for flights is the best thing to happen to him in a decade of flying. Just as contributor Mark Crump told us how he uses mobile devices and apps to re-learn guitar after 20 years, I talked to my husband Read More

Arguable the single best PDF app for iPad that lets you read and annotate PDF documents, highlight text, make notes, draw with your finger and save these changes in a compatible format just got better. New version introduces support for the shiny new iPad and its fancy Retina Display, making the text (and other content for that matter) look much sharper. As a result, it’s even easier to read on your beloved tablet, fill-out the forms or whatever you happen to use PDF Expert for. But that’s not all. Version 4.0 also comes with support for embedded audio and video, so it’s better suited for demonstration purposes and going through educational materials in schools and universities. Finally, PDF Attachments and PDF Portfolio capabilities now come included, re-establishing PDF Expert as the “most powerful PDF editor in the AppStore.” It costs 10 bucks but it’s worth every penny or at least I Read More
Readdle PDF Expert receives major update in version 4.0
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Apr 2012 18:40:00 UTC +00:00
A lot of us here at TUAW use Readdle's PDF Expert (US$9.99) to view, annotate, and organize Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The app has always provided a useful and fast way to mark up PDFs, and there's a new update available that adds some very useful features. PDF Expert 4.0 now supports the Retina display of the new iPad, a feature that works incredibly well. Readdle went through all of the UI elements of PDF Expert and updated them for the higher resolution screen. The result on a new iPad is amazing. The rendering of PDFs has been optimized for the Retina display as well, and text and graphics appear much sharper than in the previous version. While trying out the updated PDF Expert, I found that the handwriting capture for annotation seemed much smoother on the new iPad. My writing looked less like scrawls on an iPad screen Read More
The baseline of iOS document sync and editing rests with Apple's iCloud, which allows the company's three productivity apps (Keynote, Numbers and Pages) to automatically back up, synchronize versions across devices and accept uploaded files via the web browser -- or, if you're sneaky, you can use a Mac folder that ties into the cloud storage service. That's all well and good, but it doesn't deliver the syncing magic of services like Dropbox, Box.com, Egnyte or SugarSync for easy and rapid file access on the iPad. Of course, getting your files onto the iPad is only half the trip -- specifically, half of the round trip. "Round tripping" files means that your iPad productivity apps need to be able to save modified documents back to the cloud, creating new versions automatically rather than having to be manually emailed, uploaded or copied over. Cracking that challenge is a key advantage for apps Read More

App developer Readdle has been very busy lately. A big update arrived recently for its PDF Expert software, and now the company is also launching a brand new note-taking and PDF annotation iPad app called Remarks. Here’s a hands on look at what the app offers users. Remarks, like PDF Expert, offers PDF annotation and filling tools, but it’s a much more streamlined tool than that app, with a focus on making it easy to mark up and share documents, as well as create your own notes and notebooks independent of any pre-existing PDFs that can also be marked up and shared with other Remarks users for collaborative work. Remarks is that rare beast among PDF tools, either on or off the iPad: it features a simple, straightforward interface and everything work very quickly, with speedy response times for turning pages, adding notes, and basically anything else you’d want to do. Doxie Go mobile scanner cuts the wires, sort of...
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Dec 2011 02:00:00 UTC +00:00
Apparent Corporations Doxie scanner has been a hit since it arrived a few years back. It's small, lightweight, and pretty well perfect for mobile use. So when I heard that the company had come out with a new scanner called Doxie Go ($199) that allegedly removes the need to have a computer around when you need to scan something, I got a bit excited. Read on for a full review of the Doxie Go. When I first saw the PR blasts for the Doxie Go, my thought was that they'd figured out a way to build in Wi-Fi for a scan-to-cloud solution. Nope. Maybe it would use an iPhone or iPad as a go-between for scanning on the road? Not really. So how do they do PC-free scanning? It's quite simple, actually. The scanner has some built-in memory, and also has an SD slot for expanding storage. No SD cards on Read More

Außerdem verstecken sich in Read More

Daily iPad App: PDF Expert
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Sep 2011 19:00:00 UTC +00:00
We've covered PDF Expert a bit before, but this week they rolled out a 3.0 update that greatly enhances the functionality in the app. When the iPad debuted, one of the first apps to rocket to the top of the charts was GoodReader, and with good reason: it was a better PDF reader than Apple's built-in iBooks app. GoodReader wasn't perfect, and hasn't evolved that much. I bought GoodReader and used it for a long time until I had a chance to use PDF Expert. Now I'm sold: PDF Expert is likely the ultimate iOS PDF app out there right now. Even if you're just reading PDFs, PDF Expert has an edge. I found it caches large PDF files effectively, so swiping through pages isn't an exercise in futility. The responsiveness of the app has to be experienced, it's just that good. New to 3.0 is a Recents button, so recently-used Read More
iOS druckt PDFs
Calendar16 Fri, 12 Aug 2011 17:17:59 UTC +00:00
PDF Expert (7.99 €; iPhone Read More

PDF Expert Gets Even Better With Recent Update
Calendar16 Tue, 08 Feb 2011 16:30:49 UTC +00:00
By Blake Grundman on February 8th, 2011 A great app gets even better, thanks to an App Store update Like it or not, the PDF document format is here to stay.  Originally created as Adobe’s proprietary attempt to undercut Microsoft’s document format, the PDF has not only become widespread, but in some cases it has even become the defacto standard.  One such case is when documents need to be filled out and filed on the web.  Unfortunately, the were no options to handle this kind of interaction on the iPad until PDF Expert came around. The app was so well received that it managed to land a four and a half star rating here at 148Apps, in our official review.  Along with the obvious ability to read PDFs on the iPad, some of the other standout features included the ability to both highlight and notate the text, as well as efficiently Read More
Macworld Expo 2011: iOS App Trends from the Show Floor
Calendar16 Sat, 29 Jan 2011 18:00:22 UTC +00:00
Posted 01/29/2011 at 10:00am | by J.R. Bookwalter One of the coolest additions to last year’s Macworld Expo was the addition of the Mobile Applications Showcase, a section of the show floor dedicated to iOS developers and their wares, which returns for Macworld Expo 2011. MacLife.com hit the show floor at Macworld Expo 2011 to find out what iOS developers are up to with their current and forthcoming products, as well as what trends we might see in the near-term. The expo floor was quite busy on the second of three days, with one of the more popular areas being the Mobile Applications Showcase. One of the more popular trends this year is for apps dedicated to relaxation and better sleep -- no surprise given the hustle and bustle of our technology-driven world. By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Dec 22, 2010 | Handwriting recognition by way of PhatPad and form filling by way of PDF Expert are two great productivity boons to hit the iPad this week. PhatPad by PhatWare is the iPhone version of their PhatNotes app and brings with it a ton of functionality: PDF Expert by Readdle for iPad has been updated to not only let you annotate PDFs but also: Video and screenshots after the break. Posted 11/03/2010 at 4:56am | by J.R. Bookwalter If you prefer Google Calendar to Apple’s iCal (and their MobileMe cloud syncing solution), developer Readdle has you covered with an updated version of their slick Calendars app, bringing Google Tasks and universal compatibility to the table. Readdle, the developer of iOS productivity apps such as ReaddleDocs and PDF Expert, has announced Calendars 2.0, a significant update to their Google-loving app for tracking events and information on the search giant’s online calendar. Headlining the features of Calendars 2.0 is new full integration with Google Tasks. Users can now create, delete and modify tasks from within the app, with all edits being synchronized back to their Google account immediately. iPad users will also appreciate Calendars 2.0, which now sports universal compatibility so the same app works great on either the iPhone/iPod touch or on Apple’s tablet device. The new version features a redesigned user Read More

Reviews

Awesome features!
Krantikaari 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
. Works as advertised . Cool integration with drop box and other online storages . Nice reading as iBooks! . PDF highlighting and notes are great too!
Great tool to get things done.
iDisk active user 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I can review the agreements and highlight important parts on the go. Thanks!
Excellent
MWR1 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Excellent and very fast, even with large pdfs. It saves notes and highlights back to adobe reader pro on the desktop. 4 out of 5 because there is one kind of note in adobe pro that it does not currently support, the 'highlight and add note' notes that actually attach to the highlighted section of text. Also, there is no integration with sugarsync, which I prefer to dropbox. I hope both of these features will be available in future. Very nice though.
the best PDF reader for booklovers
synecdoche1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
THIS is the Kindle killer. I've pretty literally tried all the PDF readers, trying to best exploit the great iPad advantage for booklovers: the virtues of digital reading and carrying and storage without losing a sense of real books. The iPad's PDF rendering is the answer, showing the wonderful typefaces and designs of the original books. But most PDF readers are deficient for this task. Well, finally, PDF Expert has all the features a booklover seeks, including instant page-turning. The simulated swipe of paper page-turning is phony and unsettling to the eyes. These pages change instantly to keep the reading experience going. A book is words and type and the images created in the mind. This is the perfect PDF reader to give that and vanish as the intermediary. And the easy fingertip passage-marking is brilliant. I am a totally happy reader now, thanks to Google Books, Internet Archive, and PDF Expert.
Extremely intuitive UI
J.M.- H 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
PDF Expert UI is what makes the app shine. The interface is extremely intuitive. The set of annotation tools includes only essential tools, making the application pretty simple. Along with the annotation summary, I need the ability to send the list of changes by email. This feature is presented in iAnnotate. But I need this feature in PDF Expert as I want to use only this application to work with PDF documents.
Cannot Manually fill forms, never mind auto fill
cheekyjeremy 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I know there is a lot of hype about auto fill forms as a feature to follow, but this app doesn't allow even manual fill of forms. You cannot type anything into this app other than post it notes. Therefore filling in a form is impossible with this app. The drawing and highlighting features work well
Crash happy
Funderful 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Downloaded this app to compare with iAnnotate, largely because so many people write positively about Readdle. While I am reasonably happy with Aji's app, I was most interested in PDF Expert for the integration with Dropbox. Unfortunately, this app continuously crashes every time I try to run it. I have tried restarting my device numerous times to no avail. The app continues to start and the immediately crash. Granted, I am running the OS 4.2 beta, so hopefully whatever bug I'm encountering gets ironed out between now and November. Until then, I can't give it a fully vetted or positive review.
iOS 4.2
rumberg 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Just a head up that this app doesn't work on 4.2 beta 2. It starts up then shuts down right away. I'm sure it will be a great app once it is compatible with the new firmware.
Needs improvement on document organization
Dr Snickets 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app would be perfect if it had the same document organization options as Goodreader. My list of articles and textbooks are neatly organized in Goodreader in separate folders (uploaded as a .zip file), but in pdfexpert, there's just one long list of pdf. I hope a future update will take come design queues from goodreader. Other than that, the ability to highlight text with a stylus or finger is brilliant!
Does not have full dropbox integration
wesalwan 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is the most deceptive app description I've ever seen in the app store. There is an explicit claim that files can be both uploaded and downloaded from dropbox. That's not the case. There's no way to upload files back to dropbox. It's baffling that Readdle would entice dropbox users in this way with an outright lie. If it weren't for this deception I'd give it five stars.
Frustration and Annoyance
Stark101 1.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
All the cool reviews and functions are great except that they don't mention how some PDF files become blurry and checker boarded and makes it impossibly frustrating to turn pages etc. Until this problem is fixed don't buy. No point being able to take notes on something you can't see or works in a way that makes you wanna throw your iPad across the room. When I contacted them I was given elaborate instructions on how to reformat my PDF to fit their app. Hahah. One star. Not changing.
Dropbox integration
wesalwan 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Excellent usability but the uploading process for dropbox is confusing and cumbersome. And will crash with larger PDFs.
Ultimate PDF annotation tool
Ani G. 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Truth be told, PDF Expert is perfect for people who do work with PDF files on a daily basis. As for me, I use it daily for my lecture slides: I can make notes, highlight, underline and cross out. Thanks for adding the ability to organize files, now it's even better. Absolutely recommended for people who work with PDF files.
Shows promise, still missing some useful features
iAneel 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
Nice, unobtrusive interface. Seems to handle large/complex PDFs well. Easy to get documents in. Easy to make annotations. It's less good at seeing what annotations you've made. The list shows that you've made a highlight, but not the text you've highlighted, so it's hard to find a particular annotation. I'd like to be able to treat my highlights as an outline and use them to navigate the complete PDF, but the annotation list doesn't currently allow that.
THE BEST OF THE BEST!!
wclyffe3 5.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
No question this is the best app for PDF viewing and markup!

Gandalf W Clown 4.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
A great app for sure. The Readdle connection is fantastic. Tech support is superb answering my annoying questions. Highly recommend.
Poor Bookmarking Capabilities & Functionality - Otherwise a Good App!
Nick name Ron 3.0 stars Version: 1.1.0
I like most everything about PDF Export so far, with the exception of it's extremely poor bookmarking capabilities and functionality. Why they didn't create it to function the same way they did in ReaddleDocs is beyond my understanding. The first function that is missing is the ability to add a new bookmark on the fly using the selected text. They had a similar function in ReaddleDocs until the last update and they removed it. Why? I don't know, but It really gripes me! Currently to create a bookmark containing text from the document itself, you first must select and copy the text you want to use. Then click on the + icon to add a bookmark, then you have to click on the x to remove the page number text that is used as the default bookmark name, then you have to tap and hold, and finally paste the text from memory (clipboard) to use as your bookmark. Oh and don't forget to click the "Done" icon or all that work is for nothing. What a hassle! Instead they need to include the ability to add a new bookmark on the fly. Currently when selecting text, the popup menu contains the following commands: Highlight, Underline, Strikeout, Note, and Copy. Well they need to add one more command labeled "Add Bookmark" and then let you edit that text if desired before saving the new bookmark. I sure hope they add this option to the next update, it would be a huge time saver! It's evident they rushed PDF export out the door before the bookmark functions even worked properly. When adding bookmarks, they don't maintain their chronological order! Maybe it's just a bug and they'll fix it soon, but I mean come on, how much testing would it of took to realize that doesn't work properly before they put the app on the market. I haven't yet figured out what order the bookmarks are being saved in, but it's not much good the way it is. Additionally, the only bookmark editing capability PDF Expert has is the ability to DELETE a bookmark! What the heck? Why do they even bother using the word edit? There is no editing function! They got it right with ReaddleDocs but totally missed the boat with PDF export. ReaddleDocs provides the ability to edit the text and reposition the order of bookmarks in the table of content. These functions need to be added to PDF Expert too. Once that's accomplished, I'll be able to give it 4 stars. At least the annotations I've made to my PDF files while using ReaddleDocs carry over to PDF Expert to include any notes I've added. However, bookmarks made in ReaddleDocs do NOT carry over to PDF Expert, so that's a real shame. I've spent a lot of time in ReaddleDocs bookmarking my PDF files to create a nice table of contents but will now have to re-create those bookmarks in PDF Expert. The same basic file editing functions are available in PDF Expert as are available in ReaddleDocs. They include: Copy, move, delete, mail, Zip. The settings currently available are also all pretty much the same as ReaddleDocs: Passkey Lock, Wi-Fi Drive, Viewers - Highlight links toggle switch, Auto Open on Startup or File Download, Support and a Legal Notes information file. It appears to have the same "Add Server" ability as ReaddleDocs. Also with PDF Expert (as with ReaddleDocs) you have the ability to Lock Page Scroll (I haven't figured this one out yet?) Send by E-mail, Text Reflow, and Open in other apps. You don't have the ability in PDF Expert that you do in ReaddleDocs to add Mail Servers such as GMail, Hotmail, MobileMe, AOL Mail, Yahoo Mail Plus and other E-Mail Service using POP3 or IMAP type accounts. So I suppose that's the big difference in ReaddleDocs and PDF Expert and since PDF Expert is mainly designed to read only PDF's while ReaddleDocs is designed to read so much more. I haven't noticed any problems with blurry files or slow page turning as one reviewer mentioned. Also another reviewer may have been wrong about the apps ability to upload/download files unless he was having a specific problem with Dropbox (I don't use Dropbox) however PDF Export DOES in-fact have the ability to upload and download files to an iDisk without an issue, I would assume it works the same way with Dropbox. I too at first didn't see how to accomplish this task, and thought the application description in iTunes was deceiving. However, I finally discovered how to do it after playing around with the app a bit further. It's also well documented in the user guide. Some other suggestions if implemented, would allow me to give PDF Expert 5 stars. 1. They need to enable the highlighter with the ability to remember which color was used last. I was told they have plans to add this feature, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. 2. The ability to use more than one method of annotation on the same selected text. For example, I would like to be able to highlight and underline selected text at the same time. Apple Preview allows you to do that with a PDF document on the Mac, perhaps you can't do that on the iPad I'm not sure, but it would be nice! 3. They also need to implement the magnifying glass revealing the line of text you are selecting. That would make it much easier to select text. I'll have to admit at first I was reluctant to convert from ReaddleDocs to PDF Expert, primarily because of the problems involving the bookmarking functionality. But I suspect they will soon rectify these problems (as least I hope so!). After experimenting a little further with PDF Expert, I've decided to make it my PDF reader of choice and understand that I will still have a need for ReaddleDocs, its just too bad they can't merge the two apps into one "Do All" app, that would be the bomb!
Very nice

This has become my favorite PDF app. Annotation capabilities are great. I was using a competing app and switched to PDF Expert. Simpler two-way syncing with dropbox would be a great addition.
Very nice tool - worth the $$

Read other reviews before buying this, and it has lived up to it's rating. This tool has allowed me to add annotations to student papers as I'm grading, using my iPad. I can save pdf files to Dropbox and open them for annotating in PDF Expert, then copy the graded files back to my computer using ITunes. Unfortunately comments are lost when emailing directly from the app, so found it best to upload batches of files at a time. Very nice, simple annotation interface, and the comments save with document so students can easily read my notes inline. Using a BoxWave stylus makes handwritten notes easier, but the only thing I would like is smoother/finer writing and drawing, similar to the feel of Penultimate.

I like this app better than Readle Docs, because it allows for both highlighting and underlining of PDF docs. So far, I've had no problems, and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone who has to deal with PDFs on an iPad.
