On the heels of a $70 million million funding round, Evernote has acquired bestselling iPad handwriting app Penultimate for an undisclosed sum, the company announced on its blog. Penultimate creator Ben Zotto is joining Evernote to run its app development team, and will “lead the effort to put handwriting and digital ink functionality into other Evernote products and platforms.” Penultimate, which costs $0.99, will remain a separate application “and will get many much-requested Evernote-y improvements including full search and synchronization.” Apple lists Penultimate as its #4 most-downloaded paid iPad app. Evernote, which launched in 2008 and has 30 million users (up from 12.5 million less than a year ago) acquired image-sharing app Skitch last year and has raised over $166 million in funding. Valued at $1 billion in last week’s funding round, the company is preparing for an IPO as soon as the end of this year. Related research and analysis from GigaOM Read More

Why Evernote Bought the Best iPad Handwriting App
Calendar16 Mon, 07 May 2012 19:01:00 UTC +00:00
After closing a $70 million deal last week, Evernote announced today that it has acquired the handwriting app Penultimate, the fourth-best-selling iPad app of all time. Penultimate fans don't have to worry; when Evernote buys apps, they stick around. Evernote lovers should be excited to add this one to the family. Here's why. Penultimate creator Ben Zotto will lead a team implementing digital handwriting into other Evernote products. As for Penultimate itself, Zotto says that we'll "also start seeing Penultimate (finally!) on other devices." From both sides of the table, this sounds like a mutually beneficial arrangement. It Is Written The most powerful features of Evernote are its abilities to help you retrieve your stuff, no matter what format you stored it in. If you take a photo of a piece of paper, Evernote will scan the characters on it and let you find the image in search. It transcribes your audio recordings so you can Read More
Evernote kauft Notizbuch-App ‘Penultimate’
Calendar16 Mon, 07 May 2012 14:44:42 UTC +00:00
Evernote has acquired Penultimate, and I’ll be joining Evernote to help bring their significant resources to bear on making Penultimate better, faster. [...] Importantly, Penultimate is not going away: it remains an independent application, and will continue to espouse the virtues of ease of use, elegance, and “that special something” that have kept you coming back. Read More
Penultimate Just Became a Must-have App
Calendar16 Mon, 07 May 2012 14:45:26 UTC +00:00
Penultimate, one of the most popular handwriting apps for the iPad, has become part of the Evernote family – as in, Evernote has acquired the company that makes Penultimate. Cocoa Box’s Penultimate, the beautifully simple handwriting app for iPad, has been one of our favorites pretty much since it came out two years ago, so we’re very thrilled to announce that we’ve acquired the company and that Penultimate is now part of the Evernote family! This looks like very good news for users of Penultimate and Evernote as well as for anyone looking around for a great notes and / or handwriting app for iOS. I especially like seeing this section of the Evernote announcement: Penultimate creator, Ben Zotto, is joining Evernote to head up future app development. Penultimate will stay a separate, elegant application and will get many much-requested Evernote-y improvements including full search and synchronization. Ben will also lead Read More
Hot on the heels of its $70 million round, Evernote is making quick use of the new funds: today it announced that it has bought Penultimate, a digital handwriting app designed for the iPad. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Phil Libin, Evernote’s CEO, tells me that it is a cash-and-stock deal “to acquire the whole company.” Ben Zotto, the founder, will be joining Evernote as part of the deal. While many acquisitions of this kind often lead to the original app getting shut down, that doesn’t appear to be the case here: Evernote says that it will extend Penultimate to become available on “more platforms and devices,” while at the same time using Penultimate’s technology to enhance handwriting functions on its own app. Penultimate is a clever buy for Evernote because not only does it give the company new technology — but also potentially an opening to a wider Read More

Evernote Acquires Popular Handwriting App Penultimate
Calendar16 Mon, 07 May 2012 14:11:15 UTC +00:00
by Evernote has acquired best-selling handwriting iPad app Penultimate. It is the fifth in a series of acquisitions that Evernote CEO Phil LIbin says will lead up to an IPO within the next few years. The $0.99 app, which allows users to take handwritten notes with a stylus or finger, has been downloaded more than 2 million times — making it the fourth most-popular paid iPad app. After the acquisition, Penultimate will remain an independent brand in the iTunes store and a paid app. The “one-man shop” behind the app, Ben Zotto, will join Evernote and help expand handwriting features in its products. Evernote’s first acquisition, image app Skitch, has also remained an independent app, but went from being paid to free when it was acquired. Evernote turned two other recent app acquisitions into Evernote Food and Instapaper-like Evernote Clearly, and a third will soon become an Evernote calendar app. “Penultimate Read More
Evernote buys Penultimate app developer Cocoa Box
Calendar16 Mon, 07 May 2012 15:00:00 UTC +00:00
Evernote is on the move, reporting a US$70 million financing round last week and plans to "grow its user base in new regions, expand its offering into new verticals and enable the company to make strategic acquisitions." One of those strategic acquisitions was just announced -- Evernote has purchased Cocoa Box, the developer of iPad note-taking app Penultimate. It's a perfect match of two products. Evernote (free, paid subscriptions available) brings not only storage and access of "everything" (notes, business cards, photos, drawings, web pages, food experiences, travel documents, ad inifinitum) to the Web, but also provides cross-platform apps to search and add to the data store. Last fall Evernote added Skitch to its stable of apps, and now the acquisition of Penultimate ($0.99) brings even more power to the Evernote ecosystem. Penultimate was recently listed by Apple as the fourth-best selling iPad app of all time in the United States. Read More
Zwei iPad-Notizbücher: Noteshelf und Penultimate
Calendar16 Wed, 14 Mar 2012 05:51:47 UTC +00:00
Read More

Zoom Mode is a Killer Feature When Writing on an iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Jul 2011 18:24:19 UTC +00:00
I have been playing with a number of different handwriting apps on the iPad these past couple of weeks in an effort to write out rough drafts before I type or dictate them to the computer. I started off with Penultimate and then moved onto Bamboo Paper and have finally settled on Noteshelf. My initial theory was that the smoothness of the inking would be the killer feature of these apps (and in that regard Bamboo Paper has won by a very, very long shot). However, I quickly learned that smooth ink is worth very little if the interface is not intelligently designed with the limitations of the iPad’s capacitive screen in mind. I’ve found that my hand will often be detected as an extra input while I write on the iPad with a finger or stylus, and despite numerous apps with different approaches to “Palm protection”, I still haven’t found Read More
Best iPhone and iPad Note-Taking Apps for Writers
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Jun 2011 17:35:30 UTC +00:00
There was a time when writers carried a notepad and pen with them, or left one on the nightstand for noting those midnight ideas.  Instead of carrying these two items around, the smartphone has become the modern day equivalent.  The standard iOS Notes app does for making very quick notes, but there are better apps out there if you’d like something a little more stylish and with a lot more functionality. Here are ten apps to help writers keep track of story ideas, character arcs, jokes or article headlines while out and about with their iPhone or iPad.  Instead of bundling in the old favorites – doesn’t everyone know that Evernote and Awesome Note are good by now? – we’ve gathered together some you may not have heard of before. Specifically for the iPad, Notes Plus lets you write your notes on the screen using your finger, plus annotate them with Read More

11 Excellent iPad Apps for Meetings & Presentations

by This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Meetings and presentations are a way of life in the business world. That said, there’s nothing worse than dragging around a bunch of files and equipment to meetings. It would be so nice to have everything that’s necessary for a presentation or meeting stores in one place. And if that one place was a thin and lightweight piece of technology — like an iPad — it would be even better. Every organization has its own definition of formal and informal meetings and presentations, depending upon its corporate culture, clients and individual responsibilities. Whether it’s a structured sales presentation or a casual brainstorming session, here are some iPad apps that help you do everything for a presentation, from creating slides to taking minutes. As iPads are beginning to gain traction in the corporate world, lots of apps that take notes are starting to see some time in the Top 25 section. One app I have heard of but never tried was Penultimate. This is extremely simple and straightforward not really offering a crazy amount of features but selecting basic ones to present. The app is one-hundred percent focused on providing an amazing writing experience on the device and I really have to say it delivers. Aside from having one of the coolest interfaces on the iPad in terms of blending with Apples default apps, Penultimate makes writing every stroke a fun experience. The app has little subtle details such as changing the width of the stroke based on speed and smoothing out your lines to really present the best looking writing you have done on an iPad. I could be going crazy but I Read More

iPhotographer: iOS Changes Photo Scouting For The Better

Looking for vantage points, judging the sun, or moon, taking test shots, and so much more go into a good planning session. All this work often leads to lugging backbreaking equipment around just for a simple test shot. iOS has changed the face of test shooting and planning by margins that my back is very thankful for. Notebooks be gone! I have an over abundance of Moleskines full of notes, drawings, doodles, and ideas. These have traveled with me every place I run off to, including the local tea house. The introduction of the iPad has drastically changed my dependence on the tried and true Moleskine and pen. Now, apps like Penultimate allow me to draw out my ideas on my iPad. Penultimate for iPad- app review

By Chad Garrett, Monday, Jul 12, 2010 | My latest productivity app this week? Penultimate for iPad. There are several competing “free hand” note taking apps on our favorite tablet device. After our recent TiPb at Work Post, I thought I would see if Penultimate tries to separate itself from other note apps on the iPad. Is being simple with just enough  of a “feature” to get the job done enough? Penultimate starts you off with a single notebook. That notebook serves as a tutorial to show you how to use Penultimate. The example notebook is excellent as it “teaches” you everything you need to know about the app. The basic setup is this; you can have virtually unlimited notes in your notebook. You tap the bottom right corner to go to the next page and the bottom left corner to go to the previous page. You have a pen, eraser Read More

iPad App Review: Penultimate
Calendar16 Fri, 28 May 2010 06:34:26 UTC +00:00
Rating: 8 out of 10Pros: Multiple notebooks, can email single page or entire notebook, wrist protection to eliminate unwanted marks.Cons: A bit strange to use your finger to write and stay neat, only 1 color ink, a bit pricey.Overall: Penultimate is a ever growing and expanding app that has great functionality and potential.  It works quite well but the thing I found difficult, and maybe its just my sausage fingers, is that I could not get much information on one page.  I would also like to see more than 3 styles of paper and one ink color.  That being said this developer listens to what customers want and implements then extremely fast.  I honestly can’t wait to see where the developer takes this app. You can learn more about Penultimate by visiting the developers website by clicking here as well as purchase the app in the app store for $2.99 by Read More
Inking iPad App Penultimate Gets Palm Rejection
Calendar16 Sat, 22 May 2010 13:55:05 UTC +00:00
Tablet lovers have been crying for a good inking solution for the iPad since its release. The capacitive digitizer isn’t designed for writing on the screen, but that doesn’t stop those who prefer to use ink for note-taking. There are already apps that provide inking, and third party pens that make it easier to do than by using the fingertip to write. What has been missing from the mix until now is the ability for inking apps to ignore the hand resting on the screen while writing. The palm (or wrist) sitting on the big iPad screen interferes with the writing process, as it is interpreted as a desire to write when the hand hits the screen. Ink note-taking app Penultimate was updated with a “wrist protection” setting, and it works pretty darn well. I believe this is the first app on the iPad with palm rejection. Penultimate uses a notebook Read More

OK, I've had my iPad for exactly 19 days today. Over that time, just about everyone who knows that I have the device has asked the same question: "So, how do you like it?" The easy answer is that I love this device in a very unnatural way, but there's more to the answer than that. I've learned a lot about myself and how I use my computers through the time I spend with the iPad every day. The iPad provides a different computing experience than, say, a MacBook. While some actions, such as e-mail and browsing, are quite familiar and comfortable, things like using iWork are very different due to the method of interacting with the device. Fortunately, I've found the experience to be a positive one, and I sometimes find myself tapping on the screen of my iMac to try to open or move things. What follows is a Read More

To look at my office, you wouldn't know right away that I'm a digital kind of guy. Rather than pull up a text editor on any one of the digital devices that surround me, I'd rather grab a pen and scrawl a note on a Post-it™ note. Eventually, the notes are either trashed or fall under some piece of equipment, so they're definitely not for long-term use. Over the years, I've also accumulated a pile of loose-leaf binders, Moleskines, and other notebooks containing the detritus from my brain. Now that I am iPad-equipped, I finally want to move my note-taking over to the digital age. I've looked at a number of iPad apps, and most of them didn't fit my main requirement of being able to make multiple notebooks for different tasks. When I saw Penultimate from Cocoa Box Design (US$2.99 for early adopters), i finally pulled the trigger on buying Read More

Awesome!!!

Don't purchase anything else, this is the perfect note taking, memo writing, organizer. I tried four other apps trying to find this functionality along with writing recognition that wasn't a piece of garbage. Most of those apps took my writing and turned it into scribbles. Others just couldn't organize anything and left me better off we a real pad of paper and a pen. This is perfect, now I can throw away my pads of paper and vie already started moving my work notes into this.
Gel Ink Rocks
tinmen 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The "ink" in this app makes the writing look very nice. Lay out, design, function are all great. Only thing I'd like to see is the ability to zoom the page a little to get better density on the page - at current 1:1 zoom it is hard to get legibility on anything but big swoopy letters. Adobe Ideas is no where near as attractive or easy to use as Penultimate, but it does allow you to zoom in as you write which allows you to pack a page more densely (however it also requires you to pan around and keep track of where you are one page which is a total pain.). Overall, this is a great effort.
Finally an app worth spending money on!

Amazing app! I was a little worried about writing with my finger but it feels so natural with this app. The design is pleasing to the eye and the overall performance is A++. All I ask for is the ability to jump to the first page or better yet allow us to bookmark pages for easy access! Great app! I recommend it!
This is where it's at.
tbka 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Beautifully crafted. The "how-to" notebook that comes with the app made it even more enjoyable. Definitely looking forward to other high quality apps to come from this developer. Amazing work!
Nice app, but what about pen colors?
alas... 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great response when just writing with my finger. Nice to have the different paper styles. Might be cool to have at least the usual red, blue and black pen options associated with note taking.
Wonderful!
MaxBic 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great interface, simple to use, feels natural. Its replaced Apples Notes app already. Would be great if each Notebook had it's name embossed on it's cover in a nice font. Price can't be beat either.
The best handwriting app for iPad
jbstafford 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Penultimate is great for handwriting notes or doing quick sketches on the iPad. It's very easy and intuitive to use. The interface is beautiful. I use it all the time.
Love this app!
sjbrown 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's pretty simple which makes it easy to use for anything like quick notes, shopping lists, and a quick game of hangman or tic-tac-toe with your twelve-year old! The categorization feature (by being able to have multiple notebooks) is nice though I haven't had to use it yet-I just keep using the paper from the how-to. I think I agree with the poster who said it might be nice to get an embossed image of your title on the front of the notebooks. Some other things: I'd like to keep it's primary functions simple but to add more paper choices (colors, looks) and different colors of pens, etc. It might be nice if you could have a choice as to whether a sheet in a notebook could be marked like by turning down the corner for a bookmark or an actual virtual bookmark for a place I think is important but don't want to email. Also, it might be nice if a page in a notebook as well as a whole notebook could have a different color choice for paper altogether. For example, a color that could be written on or used as a divider within the same notebook or a whole notebook of pink paper for keeping a pregnancy or women's notebook to track notes for the doctor. Other than these things, I can't imagine anything else to make it better! Solid app!
Almost there
OmManiPadmeHung 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very clean UI and the writing lines are smooth unlike other writing/note taking apps. Will give it 5 stars if can choose red, blue and black ink. Also have the title and info labeled on the notebook cover.
Almost 5 stars
carouzal 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
My only complaint is the animation when changing documents is too slow. Please allow an option to turn off the animation. That is the only thing keeping it from being a 5 star app.
Best writing app
Harryzone2 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well designed and great functionality. Other writing apps not nearly as smooth as this one. Would be a great five star if we could change pen and paper colors. But for the price I rated it five star anyway. Good job developer. Most iPad apps disappoint. This doesn't!
Very good first version
MovieDave 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a terrific app for quick sketches and short, quick notes. I absolutely LOVE the Moleskine look and feel -- it's be great to have options of book covers (black covers with white pages, etc). Writing with finger works as well as I guess it could, but for longer notes, it'd be great to have a keyboard option (I know - it'd ruin the feel of the app, but it would add real functionality). I may buy a pogo stylus to see if I can write smaller... Love, too, the email functions. For quick sketches -- the app works terrific. Overall, a great version 1. Looking forward to some enhancements in future versions.
Easy to use
ShyFly99 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the note taking app that I've been looking for. It is not complicated to navigate or change tools, and writing is easy! You can't type on this app, but I personally don't need that. The ink looks beautiful, as do the pages and notebooks. I highly recommend it.
Worth every Penny, what I was totally looking for
qtran101 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
With this app and a stylus for iPad, you are ready to go. You can email single pages or entire notebooks. My only gripes, which are tiny is that when you create a new notebook, you are not prompted to give it a name. You have to exit the current notebook view to rename your notebook. Also, when you change the page type, it changes it for the entire notebook and not that single page, but maybe that was thru design. What would be cool if future version could allow you to import pics from photo app.
Nice start
jpsweet 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very nice app. Beautiful and simply to use. Two suggestions - please add two finger zoom (or other zoom option) for more precise drawing and add delete confirmation to avoid accidental page deletes.
Nice app
Avitron 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Reasonable price , wish it had a zoom feature tool or a writhing size feature . Thickness in ink and color . Nice app thank's
Good but missing features
bostonte 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Needs different color ink and the ability to make the graph paper grid larger. The graph paper is too small to be useful when you have to draw with your finger.
the nicest note taking app on the ipad
Ryan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
but it would be nice to add the ability to write on pdfs aswell, maybe you guys could make another cool app for that. cant wait to get my pogo sketch
Pretty but unusable
gentryunderwood 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The aesthetics of this app should certainly be commended - it's beautiful. But if this or any app has a chance of actually replacing a real notebook in day-to-day use it will have to support the wresting of a wrist on the glass and zooming in with a pinch to overcome the resolution limitations of the device. As a software designer I applaud the developers' intent to keep this simple, but without the addition of these two 'features' the tool will remain little more than a novelty.
Phenomenal
nato64 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't praise this app enough. Everything is so thought out. When you get to the bottom of a page, you just tap the number to go to a new page in the same notebook. It's fantastic. And I don't know why or how, nor do I care, but my sketches and notes are much more legible on this app than others! The interpretation of finger input is somehow more advanced and looks far better in this app over others.
Pages, Keynote, Numbers and Penultimate.
takayukiadr 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Though with rough edges, this is fully functional note taking app that deserves my mental spot for iWork quality apps - which, until now, has been occupied by iWork apps only. This app more than accommodates all my need for hand drawn figures and quick nite taking. I would still choose to take my college notes with Pages ( recommended template "Draft Paper), simply because I hate writing a paragraph any longer than three lines, but for "don't forget the milk" sort of business I might have, I know which app jump to. Penultimate nicely fills the gap for iPad occasions where QWERTY keyboard may be a overkill, but not worth writing it down on a piece of paper (which, I have learnt from my experience, is doomed to be lost, or to be slaughtered in the washing machine) I would appreciate to see the notebook zooming in and out, just like Pages do, and I would appreciate more carefully designed "No new notebook- create new?" touch box. But I'm sure the Penultimate had been half obligated to leave the developer's cradle, probably to confirm the positive review and good grossing. As I had came across Penultimate on the App ranking list, I'm sure the developers are fining up the edges as I write this review. Recommended for all early adopters wanting to find another way to be pragmatically digital with iPad, and for all of the late adopters I know.
Just OK
Daddyo01545 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
It is an OK app, but there are better ones out there. Should have the ability to change pen size and colors.
GREAT! :) (w/ one HUGE request)
DaRkz0mbie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Using this app feels so natural, especially with the Pogo stylus. One request is to somehow have an optional feature to be able to have the app recognize if your palm is resting on the screen, while still being able to write. I'm not sure if it's at all possible for the hardware to tell the difference, or if somehow there lies a workaround to provide this functionality, but if so, great!!! Thanks for this app...
Buggy and not great
Hed937 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Downloaded this app but found that it is impossible to rename a book as you cannot confirm the changes. Hopefully they will sort this out! If you get this to jot down notes in conjunction with drawings etc you will probably be disappointed! It is very tricky to write more than three words per line and it would be better if you could mix typed text with 'finger drawn' text and pictures. Bit of a waste of money really and hoping for v2
Very good app
SevenStarGod 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Things I would like to see in future updates: 1. A pen color palette / adjustable pen size 2. Different book covers to choose from
Dropbox user approves!
Craig Wright 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
Dropbox is my cloud storage system of choice, so this feature is wonderful for me. It also means I can very easily share notebooks with my girlfriend for collaborative cartooning. Thanks for the great new feature!
Still simply the best; always improving

I'm a note/handwriting app junkie with over a dozen, but keep going back to Penultimate with stylus. Simple, elegant, easy to use, anytime one would formerly use a pen and paper (I don't carry them anymore). Now with Dropbox and Evernote sync, there is none better, and may delete others.
great app for sketches
Shaheen Gandhi 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
i use penultimate any time i need to sketch something quickly and email it to myself. there's no better app for that out there. i honestly don't use it much for note taking, but it is indispensable for quick sketches and diagrams that i need digitized.
Love the dropbox support
True Lefty 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
Would also be nice to have box.net support option, zoom, pass code option. Still love this app.
Pumped up kicks
Max Z 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
Whoa, evernote and dropbox support. Didn't see this one coming from the folks at Penultimate but they just knocked my socks off!!! I'm a power user of both of those services so this is a welcome addition to the Penultimate features. As for the handwriting, fluid, easy and effortless. Love this app!
Used This App Since I Discovered It ...
John Philpin 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
... And it has never disappointed. Never. And then this new version is released - oh how good is that. Evernote and Dropbox integration. Very cool. No - very USEFUL.Totally does what it says on the tin - and more besides - a definite example of 'understate and over prove'.
Best Yet

The Jan 10 update sends this app to the head of the class once again. I am very happy with the new ability to write and draw and take photos with Penultimate and then send the lot to my Dropbox or to Evernote. Makes my life a lot easier and more productive. How could anyone do without this app?
Wow. Best gets better!
d1willis 5.0 stars Version: 3.3
The ink feel in Penultimate is best by far. Very enjoyable to write and draw. The update to integrate Dropbox and Evernote is wonderful. Feature suggestion....I would love to be able to paste PDFs into my notebooks, hope that is coming.
Every time

Each update is five stars. The best and most improved writing app on the market.
Another great update - Evernote support!
