Macworld’s own cover: shot with an iPhone 4
Calendar16 Sun, 08 Aug 2010 18:19:37 UTC +00:00
image taken from the Macworld article linked to below This is just a quick nod to the folks at Macworld for creating such a cool iPhone 4 spread entirely on the iPhone 4. Photographer Peter Belanger usually shoots for Macworld with a more “serious” camera, but opted to try creating this latest issue with the iPhone 4 as judge, jury, and executioner (well, the photographic equivalents of those roles, I guess). Peter ended up treating the iPhone 4 like a first-class camera for the shoot, mounting it on a steady mechanical arm (don’t look at me like that — I don’t know the names for these things), and illuminating the shot up with professional lighting. He then used iPhone apps (Photoforge and Resize-Photo) to retouch the photo until it was perfect. You can see the end result at Macworld.com or on your local newsstands. Read More
Review: ColorBlast! for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 04 Aug 2010 18:33:37 UTC +00:00
image taken with permission from The Travelling Isle travel blog ColorBlast! is a selective colour painting app developed by two ex-Adobe engineers, but don ‘t worry: this isn ‘t one of those cases where the developers’ name dropping is the most exciting thing behind the app. ColorBlast! really can work like magic, and it’s hands-down the easiest ways to create a dramatic grey scale image with a punch of colour right on your iPhone. [I Am Canadian: you may notice that I spell 'color ' with a 'u ' in this article, but still spell the app as 'ColorBlast! '. These are not typos or inconsistencies, I am just Canadian.] Selective Colouring Before I expound on the magic of ColorBlasting (which is very different from Bear Blasting, by the way), it ‘s probably important for me to mention what the process is like in other iPhone apps. Pocket Pixels ‘ Color Read More
Photoforge ($2.99 – review), which does a better job of mimicking Photoshop functionality than Photoshop.com Mobile,  is now multi-tasking enabled. There isn’t any actual background task completion for saving large images, but you can simply leave the app and come back to it to finish saving a file. This newest update also boasts an optimized image processing engine, but it’s honestly been a while since I’ve used Photoforge for me to tell the difference. I’ve recently been using a mix of Camera+, TiltShiftGen, and Pixelmator on the Mac for my image manipulation needs. Read More

Posted 04/29/2010 at 1:56pm | by Ray Aguilera With 185,000 apps and counting, the App Store is a vast warehouse of digital goodies for your iPhone (and now iPad too). But like most mega-marts, the sheer size of it all makes the good stuff harder to find. We’ve scoured the Store, and found the best apps to help you use your iPhone to it’s fullest potential. Whether it’s games you seek, or productivity tools, we’ve got you covered. As it turns out, there really is an app for that, no matter what that is. The iPhone and iPod touch brought back fun to videogaming, with developers focussing on innovation, affordability, and novelty. Touchscreen and accelerometer controls also force designers to think different, resulting in games that are a glorious collision of classic and cutting-edge gameplay and technology. --Craig Grannell Steph Thirion · $2.99 Eliss is the perfect game for the iPhone’s Read More

Weekly App Store Picks: November 21, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 21 Nov 2009 17:00:44 UTC +00:00
Another week passing means another batch of fresh apps pop out of the Apple approval oven and land in the App Store. As ever, I’ve selected four of the best from this week’s releases for you to check out. My top pick for this week is TimeTuner, an absolutely essential clock radio app for just about anyone who uses an alarm clock. Plus, I’ve also been looking at WorkSnug, Harbor 3D and AutoStitch. The iPhone Clock app does a valiant job of waking me up, but sometimes even Apple’s own apps need a bit of jazzing up. Enter TimeTuner, a gorgeous alarm clock app with a chic, ever-so-slightly ’80′s style. The app includes a glowing green LED clock, alongside a customizable radio tuner. Even without the alarm clock functionality, the radio tuner alone is a powerful app, certainly worth more than a couple of bucks. Powered by Radio Time, the tuner Read More

Is that a PhotoForge in your pocket, or are you just — oh, ok, it is PhotoForge. I’ve been taking quite a while to review all of my favourite photo manipulation software, but I’ve finally reached the final one in my arsenal (for now). PhotoForge rounds out my posse of beret-wearing, artist apps (to which Photogene, TiltShift Gen, and AutoStitch also belong). Those other apps are ridiculously useful and all have their purpose, but none of them is quite the Swiss Army Paintbrush that PhotoForge is. Seriously. You can do almost anything with this $2.99 app: add filters, paint, erase, blur, clone, and even crop. It should be illegal to carry all of these tools in one app on your iPhone. Firing up the forge Before you get to crafting your photo you first have to load one up. Since I use this app pretty regularly, this presents one of my Read More
I’ve had a couple of people (exactly two) ask me about how I create some of these JAiB review title pictures, and even though they’re no great feat, I figured I’d share my quick How-To here. I got tired of trying to find random pictures that I thought looked good alongside the title of a review, so I thought I’d find the most iconic picture of the iPhone, the home screen, and just do some fancy pants picture of that. I’m absolute garbage with Photoshop so I’ve shied away from desktop image manipulation for the most part and have relied mainly on my iPhone to do the heavy lifting. My best buddies in this category are Photogene and Photoforge (review here). I use Photoforge to selectively blur and de-saturate my screenshots and then use Photogene to add those neat little speech bubbles. Now you might not want to follow this walkthrough Read More

Weekly App Store Picks: September 26, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 26 Sep 2009 16:00:19 UTC +00:00
As another week draws to a close, the App Store expands even further with a torrent of new toys and tools. As ever, I’ve hand-picked four recent iPhone releases for you to take a look at. This week I’ve given our picks a creative vibe, selecting four different apps that let you engage with your artistic and cultural side. My top pick for the week is Xewton Music Studio, plus I’ve been looking at Snapture, GraffitiGeo and McSweeney’s. Armed with an iPhone, there’s never been so much choice for making music on the move. Despite all the choice, the recording app I keep coming back to is FourTrack. It’s a fully-featured 4 track recorder, complete with bouncing, panning, metronome and Wi-Fi sharing. When it comes to full on audio sequencing and sketching out bigger ideas, I head for Intua’s BeatMaker. The app costs twenty bucks, but for producers it’s definitely worth Read More

App Review: PhotoForge
Calendar16 Mon, 18 May 2009 09:11:44 UTC +00:00
Some apps seem ripe for the iPhone: games, Twitter clients, podcast players and many others. Who though, would think to create an application that contains several of the essential photo manipulation tools found in more grown up software like Photoshop? GhostBird would… and did. With PhotoForge, you effectively get two apps in one. It’s an image manipulation utility and also a painting app. Although I suspect the developers see the image manipulation side as the main selling point, for me, it’s the painting aspect that’s of most interest. I’m not suggesting its bad at twiddling with your photos, it’s actually very good at it and includes an impressive range of tools. It’s just, for me, it suffers from an inherent problem regarding photo editing on the iPhone. But I’ll come to that later. The opening screen (indeed, the only one) gives the first clue that this isn’t your average paint app. Read More
Image manipulation goodness with PhotoForge for the iPhone
Calendar16 Sun, 17 May 2009 17:42:29 UTC +00:00
Next time you want to do image manipulation, retouching, effects, and color correction to your photo shot from your iPhone, you dont have to transfer that image to your computer. PhotoForge from GhostBird Software is a $4.99 Photo Manipulation app which can do almost everything that your desktop app can do. PhotoForge is a superb photographer’s tool, providing digital darkroom capabilities and is also a tool for creating incredible works of art and illustrations easily. PhotoForge allows you to put together an image, combining filters, brushes, and effects. They may be hand-painted, or a composite of photographic images mixed with painting. The variety is pretty much unlimited, and the interface is simple to use. The filters and effects can be layered to produce even more dynamic results. It’s easy to see that creating cool photos with special effects is becoming an interesting little cottage industry on the iPhone. Very little for Read More

**WIN A COPY FOR YOURSELF!!!** Written By: Daniel Scott GhostBird Software’s photo editing tool is pure magic. PhotoForge ($4.99) PhotoForge is a highly optimized editing and painting application designed for the iPhone and iPod touch. It can be used for image manipulation, retouching, effects, and color correction, as well as a painter’s tool. It is indispensable for creating original artwork, or editing photos on your mobile device. My Take Features Ok, if you work at all in Photoshop it is NICE to see the grayscale/transparent checkerboard, something familiar to see.  All the tools are on the top and bottom of the screen.  Easy to use, just tap the bottom left corner folder icon and pick an existing picture from your library, or snap a new one.  There’s only one color space, RGB of course and it’s off to editing with your finger. After I played around with a photo, I saved Read More

Getting closer to Photoshop all the time
Atmoosh 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This looks to be a really good image editor for the iPhone. Has a lot of "PhotoShop"-like features. The most important thing is that the picture quality at the end of the processing is really very good. Much better than the original iPhone camera image. Also, when it recompresses it, detail is not lost. It does need a crop tool and a way to soften the edges of the brushes, but otherwise, a worthwhile investment.
I love it
jgitana4 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really great app, I have played around with it a little bit but I already love it. Especially the clone tool, I have tried others but they were a little confusing to use. This one is really easy ... Could use a how to section like at the beginning .

good so far
markymarktoo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The magnifying tool works very well extremely responsive. Smudge works well and so does clone. The curves is a nice touch, it acts similar to photoshop so if you like that type of control than you'll like this. Unfortunately the filters are not adjustable but they are interesting. One thing I don't like is the eraser is hard edge and erases only at 100%. There is no adjustment for this and it only works when you import a photo. If you paint with no photo the eraser does not work at all. You can probably work around this by opening a blank photo so it will work if you need it. The undo is at least a substitute, but there is no redo. The fill tool only fills a rectangular shape, (the visible screen). The contrast/brightness/exposure settings work well with adjustable sliders. Also the painting tools have a variety of textures but still paint fairly solid (untextured) even when transparency is toned down. Overall this program work smoothly and fairly well. I'd like to see adjustments in filters and adjustable transparency on the eraser and better brush textures. One last thing, it's nice that the filters include noise reduction and sharpening. What I think would help is a add noise and unsharp mask filter and substitute an adjustable color vignette filter for the blue sky and sunset filters.
Great

Great Excellent App, needing improvement
Atmoosh 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really a great program and I would be giving it 5 stars if not for a few (major) issues. First, is this app causes my 1st gen iPhone to crash literally every other time I use it, forcing a total re-boot. The last re-boot I had to do caused the phone to become inactivated for some strange reason, requiring it to be reactivated, which it did automatically when it finally restarted and found a signal. This is a big NO-NO for me. I don't mind needing to reboot the iPhone to free up memory from time to time, but this is nuts. And when I saw that activation message, I almost panicked. Not good.
Great

rduatc 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app crashes whenever I try to save a 1600x1200 image with noise reduction applied. After setting the app to save in full resolution in settings, this problem appeared. Photocleaner by this developer has the same issue. This has the potential of being a good app if they can fix crashing issue. I also have another app for noise reduction and it handles full resolution images without problems. I frankly have no use for an app that has to downsize an image for it to work.
Best. Final. However,

Back to 3 stars until they get this fixed. I was able to save one high res image, but then the app started crashing again with subsequent saves, even after a reboot. This app apparently still has some memory issues.

sgranlund 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
I really like this app, however; it does need a brush adjustment slider with transparency and edge adjustment ( softness). I am professional photo retouch artist, and this app has the most potential I have seen yet in a photo app. I hope the developers make this update, they could be the best with a little effort. If possible, layers, or a memory purge would also be nice Thanks

Good job GhostBird.

There are a few tweaks needed for a 5 star review. I'm a full-time concept artist and spend my entire days in Photoshop and Painter as well as time away from the computer in Brushes or Colors. I know what I need in a paint app and this one is close to taking over the iphone for me. But first I need: 1)automatic eyedropper control - can't be going to the menu for that and then go back to the menu to select my brush again. Just can't. Has to change. 2)Zoom control - can't be going to the menu for this every time either. Needs to be automatic when I use two fingers. 3)Transparency - this resets to opaque when the eyedropper is used. Needs to stay the same level after a selection. If there was accelerometer opacity control I would probably delete every other paint app on my phone. 4)Larger file size export. Other than those, and perhaps a stroke playback feature, this is a fantastic app and I will recommend once those changes are implemented.
Needs CROP tool!!!

Everything is super, but it's only missing a cropping tool!! Needs update with that in it)))
Very nice
BBshopGirl 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
Good basic editing app. Definitely worth the money. I use photoshop on my Mac for heavyweight digital editing, but for a lightweight quick-fix app, this does almost everything I need. The ability to clone and use curves is worth it alone. Being able to select a region with a lasso tool would be a nice addition as well as a crop tool, but this is a nice app nonetheless.
Great Interface! Closest to Photoshop there is.
YodaMac 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
Great interface on this program. Closest thing to photoshop I think there is for iPhone. That said, just need a few upgrades to be "perfect"! :) A Crop feature (I hear that's coming "soon"), a Picture Straighten feature (similar to iPhoto), and please, Please, PLEASE upgrade it to save photos at native iPhone 3G s resolution! (2048 x 1536!) Other than that, BEST iPhone All-In-One Photo App in the entire App store. Beats PhotoGene UI by leaps and bounds! Thanx and keep up the great work!
Nice kit
tripname 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
Only 3 feature requests. A real paint bucket tool. Not a total fill command. Just a paint bucket for enclosed spaces.
Pretty neat but,

The picures taken with the 3gs camera start out pretty good. Once you import them into photoforge they are half the quality. That would have been nice to know before purchasing.
Avoid if you own a 3GS
Breadfan35 1.0 stars Version: 1.5
Despite another review saying quality of 3GS was reduced, I bought it anyways because it offered so much. I do alot of shooting and editing on my iPhone. I figured it could still be useful. It's not. Once my 3GS images are imported, they are significantly lower quality making the app useless for me. No other image editing app I have does this and I have many of them. For now I'll stick with Photogene and CameraBag as my main editing apps. Until this app is updated to be compatible with the 3GS images, 3GS owners should aviod this app.
Replaced my Brushes and Photogene
Danny L 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I love this ap. I hope it keeps improving. It has replaced my Photogene and Brushes aps. One ap that combines the power of these two aps.
Photoshop On the iPhone
Stevearcher 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Exceptionally comprehensive app that now processes more quickly, plus welcome new cropping capability, on my 3gs. One question remaining... do save options include full 3gs resolution?
Real Photoshop Suite for iPhone
iPhon-Star 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
At first i was doubtful about this app, but once you play with it it is amazing. Like i said above: Real Photoshop Suite for iPhone 3G S. Love it
It works!
PJPlanker 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
And I don't take that lightly. I bought iRetouch... which just made it hard to use. But PhotoForge makes the work clean and logical. I just wish I knew in the first place.
Great job!
rc_designs 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
It really is alot like Photoshop for the iPhone. So far it is so easy to learn also. I can say I have never seen an ap on a phone that can manipulate images like this app !
Little Photoshop
electricsketchbook 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
Amazing functionality for an iphone app. I still paint a little faster in Brushes and there are some odd edges to the brushes in PhotoForge where strokes of the same color show color changes in the overlapping edges when you build up the area. I agree that zoom should be a simple two fingered pinch gesture without having to select the zoom tool and the eye dropper should just be a press and hold to speed the process up.
Eh
ashlynnrenee08 3.0 stars Version: 1.5
Definately needs an upgrade. + filters and increased image quailty would make the app worth the money.
Great Start
Delrick 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
Ok I just got this app and I love it.It works really well if you want to work on pics taken with the iphone this is it.It really comes in handy with pics taken in low light
Amazing & Well Worth It!
Super Collapse Lover 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
If you are going to buy a photo app, this is the one to get. Simply amazing that one can do all this on a phone!
So-so
Lollolol 3.0 stars Version: 1.5
The app is very detailed, very profesional, and has a decent interface. I was able to delete 2 other apps because this dose all together. But... It is extremely slow, I mean epic fail slow. Fix and I give 5 stars ez!! PS:: when cropping allow the image you crop to be able to be used in another picture.
The go anywhere, do anything photo editor
shigzeo at TouchMyApps.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.6
I have used Photoshop both professionally and in leisure for 4 years now - a sometimes torturous time punctuated by exciting jobs such as removing a hairy person from a leafy background, squishing people’s big head to fit into graphical directories; in short, nothing glamourous.
Add this feature...it's a must
christofleeze 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
I like this app, but it is missing a feature that would make this app huge! Make it so you can adjust the eraser's opacity and soften the edges. What if you want to add an effect, but then only have it appear in certain areas. Currently, it seems you have only a hard edged eraser tool that erases 100% strength. This makes it unusable for getting seamless blending. Also you should work up a way to allow for compositing of at least 2 image layers. This may be a tougher addition, but is something I would like. Juxtapose does this, but resizes the top layer to be smaller. Even if you load the same image twice. Thanks for a great app, otherwise!
This is a must have application

I very much enjoy photography and if you like photography but just can't seem to take a picture correctly well just get this app and edit your photo.
Probably the most powerful photo editing app out there.
Tom Steele 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
I downloaded Photo Hype, Photogene and PhotoForge at the same time. Photo Hype is much more basic than either of the others. But it isn't bad when you just need to do some quick editing or enhancing. Photogene is a nice program with some limitations. Photo Forge is full featured and probably as close to Photoshop as you are going to get on the iPhone. However, the biggest limitation is that the iPhone isn't a great platform for photo editing. I tried touching up some images and sending them to my e-mail account only to find that they were overprocessed (too saturated for one thing) when viewed on the computer screen. Another beef I have is the sliders for things like sharpen and saturation. They seem to do a lot fast, so that there isn't a lot of fine tuning available. Furthermore, since there are no numbers or saved templates, it is hard to do the same thing to each photo in a set. I'd also like to see a good white balance tool. In fact, an app with a good white balance tool would be worth the price of this or any other photo editing app alone. We need something with an eyedropper that will let us choose gray or neutral and balance accordingly. I wasn't certain that the white balance in this program was better than the original picture.
Closest thing to Photoshop on iPhone

Well done app with more tools than you can count! I have dropped most of the other photo editing apps I bought for this one.
Not good, very disappointed
mimi du 1.0 stars Version: 1.7
Seems that MacWorld reviewed this app so I bought it. I played about 20 minutes and was very disappointed.
Would be good BUT
chris24net 1.0 stars Version: 1.81
It loads the pic at the resoltion kf te iPhone screen, not the actual resolution, so that when you try to zoom in the image becomes immediately pixelated. Which makes the clone tool, etc. worthless. PhotoGene zooms to 100%, iRetouch to 200%. Why can't photoforge do something so basic and necessary?
