Loved by some, hated by others, the art of applying a special filter to a picture taken with your iPhone has exploded in popularity over the past year or so.  In fact, it has become so popular, there’s talk of a similar feature becoming standard in iOS 5.  In the meantime, those wanting to add filters to their pictures should take a look at any one of the following apps, all of which have a catalog of filters to give even the dreariest of snaps a new lease of life. A great cross-platform photo-sharing social network.  Take a photo from within the app, or select one from your Camera Roll, then add a filter of your choice.  There are nine to choose from, each with the option of adding a border, and the chance to share your uploaded pic through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and many others.  Free. Have Some Halloween Photo Fun with Your iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 29 Oct 2010 17:00:49 UTC +00:00
Want to add some social mobile fun to this Halloween? How about taking some of the snapshots you’re taking with your iPhone or iPod touch, and turning them into cartoon avatars for Facebook and Twitter? The process is easy, and all you need are a few apps. Once you have your photo, perform all of the necessary cropping and color adjustments in one of the many image editors available.  For this step in the process I’ve always used Photogene (iTunes link, $1.99). Photoshop Express is a good free alternative.  In Photogene, I auto adjust the colors and utilize a filter to sharpen the image.  This  sharpening helps out when the photo is converted into a drawing. I then crop the image, depending on what I want to use it for. If I’m creating an avatar for IM apps, I will typically use a 1:1 ration when cropping. If you just want this Read More

It seemed like such a great idea. Adobe was releasing a free photo editing tool for the iPhone and the iPad. Well, Photoshop Express is out, and it's a big, honking dog. It has just about the worst ratings I've ever seen on an app from a big time developer, and those ratings are well deserved. On my iPad it launches, crashes, and then picks another app on my iPad to run. In my case it launches Photogene, another photo editing program. Huh? For those lucky enough to get Photoshop Express running it crashes over and over. And over. Did anybody at Adobe test this thing? I'm sure it will be replaced by a working app at some time, but don't grab this thing unless you are really a masochist. It may be working fine for a few, but for most users the app is a steaming pile of frustration. You've Read More

I’ve had a couple of people (exactly two) ask me about how I create some of these JAiB review title pictures, and even though they’re no great feat, I figured I’d share my quick How-To here. I got tired of trying to find random pictures that I thought looked good alongside the title of a review, so I thought I’d find the most iconic picture of the iPhone, the home screen, and just do some fancy pants picture of that. I’m absolute garbage with Photoshop so I’ve shied away from desktop image manipulation for the most part and have relied mainly on my iPhone to do the heavy lifting. My best buddies in this category are Photogene and Photoforge (review here). I use Photoforge to selectively blur and de-saturate my screenshots and then use Photogene to add those neat little speech bubbles. Now you might not want to follow this walkthrough Read More

How To: Edit Your Photos Using Multiple Apps On The iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Oct 2009 12:00:44 UTC +00:00
There are so many photography apps in the App Store and yet, there is no one app that could replace them all. Why not use multiple apps for that one special photo you want to enhance and send off in an email or Facebook? There is one simple trick that is standard across most photography programs and that is Save and Load from your iPhones camera roll. This allows you to do things like crop your picture with PhotoGene and add a Helga effect to the same photo with CameraBag. Let’s take a look at how you might edit one photo with multiple apps! To edit this particular photo, we will use the following apps: ColorSplash, CameraBag, and PhotoGene Step 1: Find a photo in your Camera Roll you want to enhance or take a picture with the iPhones camera. Step 2: Load the image in PhotoGene and apply a few Read More
August 22nd, 2009 James Isabel Oh hey it’s a Saturday so we’ll collect some of the best sales happening this weekend! Not so much this week as developers jumped the gun already late this past week on dropping the prices. Today we have an app and a game! While there have been a few fighting games in the past on the iPhone, this one is by far the best available to date. Furthermore, none can match the quality and depth of Touch KO. If you are a fan of fighting games, such as Fight Night or UFC for consoles, you and iPhone gaming just might’ve found one. Photogene is a photo genius for your iPhone
Calendar16 Sun, 14 Jun 2009 03:00:00 UTC +00:00
In my recent review of AutoStitch I mentioned Photogene [App Store] which is kind of like a miniature Photoshop for the digital pictures you take on your iPhone. It has a boatload of functions, which will let you fix and enhance your digital images without having to offload them to another image editor on a Mac or PC. Here's some of the functionality: Some of the icons are not obvious in function, but they are quickly learned. I would have liked to see noise reduction among the features, but the developer has created a separate app called NoiseBlaster [App Store] that removes noise from iPhone images. It's an additional $0.99, but I would have liked it included in Photogene. Photogene works on the iPod touch as well, but you'll have to import images since the touch has no built in camera, at least not yet. At US$2.99 it's hard to go Read More
AutoStitch raises the bar on iPhone panoramas
Calendar16 Fri, 12 Jun 2009 22:00:00 UTC +00:00
There are quite a few programs that allow you to create panoramas on the iPhone. I've reviewed some of them, and they all get pretty good reviews. The differences are often in how much work you have to do versus letting the software do the alignments of the various images. Since iPhone photos are almost always hand held, there are going to be issues of the camera not always being level. AutoStitch [App Store] is a US$1.99 app that gets most of the process just right. When you run it, it asks you to import images from your camera roll, as many as you like. They can be horizontal for a wide panorama, or stacked vertically. As an experiment I shot both vertically and horizontally, and rocked the camera significantly out of level by tilting it up to about 45 degrees. I took 10 images, and the software assembled the images Read More
Seven Apps to Improve the iPhone’s Camera & Photos
Calendar16 Wed, 27 May 2009 19:00:52 UTC +00:00
The iPhone’s 2-megapixel camera takes some all-right photos, but honestly, there’s a lot of room for improvement. A future model with a higher-resolution camera seems like a no-brainer (rumors point to 3.2-megapixel hardware), but for now, there are some excellent applications for getting the most out of the current iPhone cameras and the photos they produce. The applications I’ve been playing with either function as capture application replacements (for the in-built Camera app), or post processing applications to make your existing photos — whether from the iPhone camera, or loaded from a computer — pop just a little more. While most of the apps can function as Camera replacements, only some of them are designed specifically to produce better images as they are snapped. We’ll focus on these first. I’ve basically replaced my use of Camera app with Pro Camera. It utilizes the accelerometer to help you level your shots before Read More
Photogene
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Apr 2009 11:20:31 UTC +00:00
Photogene is a photo editing app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that gives users a large selection of tools to edit photos right on their device. We've all had issues from time to time with how our photos turn out on our iPhone. Some of us have also had the desire to quick edit a picture before sending it to someone from our iPod Touch. Recently featured in one of Apple's iPhone commercials, Photogene really brings one of the best photo editing experiences we've seen to our devices. Taking a picture or choosing one from your photo library will automatically open the interface and allow you to get right to editing. Once open, users will notice there is an almost overwhelming selection of tools and options to choose from. The user really has a lot of freedom to customize the photo to look how they desire. Though I can't cover Read More

No resize, enlarges cropped photographs (reducing quality),edits thumbnails.
arugonkin 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app, but three problems. I saw crop, and I thought that would work just as well as resize, but the picture remains over 120kb most of the time and stays at 800px in width no matter how many times you crop the photograph thus also reducing the quality of the photograph since it saves it enlarged to 800px (width). The app also seems to only edit the thumbnails instead of the actual picture so it appears to cut off any pictures on the bottom/top or sides. If not for these problems, I would have given 5 stars. I mainly purchased this app hoping for the ability to resize photographs so that was a huge let down for me.
Great App, Except one major bug
redman042 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very well designed app. Slick interface. I like how everything animates. I think it has plenty of functionality for a mobile photo app - I'm not looking for a full Photoshop! ONE big problem - it cuts off the sides of vertical photos. I'm sure this is a bug that will be fixed, hopefully real soon. Until then it will only work correctly with landscape photos.
Very Well Done
MrBoBo Rocks! 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the best photo edit app I've found on the iPhone. What makes it better than others: - Wide selection of text/chat bubbles and boxes. - Ability to rotate, straighten, and/or crop a photo. - Best undo/redo UI around. - Easiest way to frame a photo and best selection of frames. However, it lacks a few things other apps have: - Font selection (TalkBubbles) - Special effects (Comic Touch) - Novelty graphics (Pictems, Sketches) - Finger painting/drawing (Sketches and several others) - Ability to make multiple photos into a minivideo (Flipbook) The price will not appeal to the I-want-it-free-or-I'll-give-you-a-bad-review crowd...
It's OK.
wrizacked 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
I downloaded picoli before I downloaded this and while the two have different features, I don't see myself using this app as much. The features are a bit quirky and kind of cheap. Would love it if color hue could be changed, but for now, I'll stick to picoli. This app works good in conjunction with picoli, but I don't understand all the hype over this app, as far as photo editing goes.
Best Photo app but
Pineconez 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Should actually probably be 3 stars, but since its the best we've got, I'll give it 4.
Upgrade addresses all problems
striatic 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
There are a few out of date reviews on this app. One states that Photogene doesn't work with "portrait oriented" photos. This is no longer true. Another suggests that Photogene will "enlarge" your image from a low resolution version, like the inferior "Picoli" app. This is no longer true, as Photogene maintains the native resolution all the way through the editing process.
Fun 4 the photo lovers
florence5 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app. is kinda like comiclife, except it does not have as many features but its defanitly something worth having on your ipod if your a fellow photo lover like me!Enjoy
Awesome Program!!!
Lee Downey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Delete all your other photo apps. This is the ONLY one to have. Works fantastic. 5 program into 1. Love it!

Dudle mchead 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is a great application. It just needs an upgrade and I think everyone who has this app already would appreciate a sharpening filter. I gave it five stars though. I hope you guys add a filter soon. Please!!!!
Awesome!
ArtDragon 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was looking for a photo editing app where I could crop exactly the sections I wanted, where ezimba only let's you crop 3% or 10%. This is it! I'm so impressed. I love this app, THANK YOU!

Worth the money
Madtrucker0983 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Great app. It does every thing I expected it to do, plus a couple more things. I am very pleased with it.
Very Cool...
A2iphone 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a great all in one app. It will crop, adjust, and add fun to your photos. I had comic touch, but I deleted it after trying Photogene. This app has a wider selection of thought bubbles with colors and transparency! Awesome frames too. I may have missed another app, but this is the first one I have seen with a crop tool. The entire program is very intuitive and easy to use. Nicely done!
Nice mix of features
constanto 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
Some good features either not found elsewhere or else implemented better here: tilt correction, contrast/brightness adjustment with histogram similar to Photoshop "levels", cropping. Comic balloons not as polished and genuinely comic-book-like as Comic Touch. Does not have as rich a set of useful image-enhancement filters as Picoli has.
Fantastic! One suggestion though...
Cdmarine 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Love this! Really fantastic app. Would be even better if it would preserve the photo's EXIF data, though.
Very cool
Mike909 5.0 stars Version: 1.5

GREAT!!!!!! Very user friendlly!
hbuz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I really like this application. Easy to use, self explanatory and fun!
Almost perfect
sparky952 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
We a more in depth photo correction interface. Meaning sharpness, contrast, etc... Other than that it's great.
Great! But could be fine tuned.
Harris Charalambous 4.0 stars Version: 1.5
Oct 13th Ver 1.5 This is a great app and certainly not cheap but ultimately worth the money. This is what I think can be improved. CROP, ASPECT RATIO & STRAIGHTEN FEATURE Once you have cropped an image and then made some other image adjustments i.e color saturation or frame, then decide you want to change your crop, it's not a simple process. Ideally the app would remember your previous crop while also showing the rest of the image beyond the crop tool, instead of having you starting from scratch. This should also ideally apply to the straighten tool. Basically for crop and straighten tools always reference the original after an initial adjustment has been made. It would also be great if there was a checkbox that at the very least allowed you to maintain the same aspect ratio of the original image, or ideally even create new ones. COLOR AND BRIGHTNESS TOOLS The levels slider could benefit from having a 3rd slider in the middle that controlled brightness as the current levels tool only controls contrast. It would also be cool to have RGB sliders so the user could also creatively color their image instead of using the color temperture to achieve either a warm or cool look only. FRAME I would love to have the option of having a white frame of equal thickness on all sides. The Polaroid one is great but doesn't work as nicely for truley square images. I might be missing this one somewhere but a complete reset tool of the current image would be handy too. Great app and will only become better!
Great Photo App
F15Crypt 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I am a real photographer and I was having a problem using my iPhone for any photo fun. The iPhone usually underexposes all but the best lit pictures and I didnt want to share them as they were. Photogene to the rescue. I was a little bummed out that there was no sharpening then I went to bed and woke up to an update. There is always room for growth and I am excited at what will be added. Of course it is not photoshop but it makes my photos presentable for on the go sharing. Good work and thanks for listening and updating.
Superior to Picoli
runeypants 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
The additional features in this application make it more desirable than Picoli, in my opinion. The ability to crop, add symbols (including chat bubbles) and use frames makes this a hit with my friends. Great in combination with a social app to get some laughs as well as improving your photos.
It's worth it...
SUMMER GYRL 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
I really like this app. Finally I can crop photos and then save them to upload onto myspace. I think it would be helpful if somehow this app was linked to places like myspace, facebook, flicker, etc. But regardless, I do use this app slot and for $5, I'd buy it all over again!
You got to get it
skymaker 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is one of the best programs I have paid for out of all of the new ones. It is very easy to use and you can do so much with it. I have had a lot of fun working with it as well as sending some of the photos to friends and uploading them to MobileMe. As for the price, thank you for keeping it low. I am not sure at this time what more you can add, but I will have to see as I use it more... This is a winner
Awesome!!!
LoveMyiPhone3g 5.0 stars Version: 1.62
I enjoy creating wallpaper for my iPhone using photos stored on the camera roll. This app allows me to trim the pictures and soften the edges making awesome and unique wallpaper. I have even created a screen shot of an encouraging e-mail my husband sent to me. I then edited the screen shot with this software. Now I see his message each time I turn my phone on. What an inspiration! Looking forward to more applications from Omer! Thanks!!!
Eh. Okay I guess
Mr sd 2.0 stars Version: 1.7
Not great. Not bad. Crops, has some useless 'toy' frames, color adjust with histo is nice. Nav toolbar is irritating, but functional. Work area too small. I'm sure there's another app better than this. The nav and viewable image size make this a 2 rating.
No cs4 but it's fantastic!!! Hats off to u!!! Thanks!!
neogaz 5.0 stars Version: 1.7
Now merge the app with colorsplash and face melter and we would be cooking with gas!!!!baby!!!

lates updates make this solid 5+ stars!
wassup_nola 5.0 stars Version: 1.7
UPDATED REVIEW: after this latest update, this is the ONLY photo editing app I use. there just isn't a need for anything else. it's like a mini PS for your iphone. editing photos with this app is effortless with beautiful results. well done!!
I don't buy many apps but this is well worth it!
Nicki2002 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
I have bought very few apps -- found a lot of great free ones. Plus, as an amateur photographer, I just usually dragged my photos into Photoshop and did any re-touching there. I finally decided "what the heck, for 3 bucks, why not? It's not exactly a lot of money." The first time I used it I thought "wow, this is ONLY $2.99?!" OK so it's not Photoshop but then the iPhone isn't my Nikon camera either. However, I do take photos with iPhone when I don't have my Nikon with me and it's amazing what this little app is capable of. Clearly the developer enjoys photography and gave a lot of thought of what would be handy. Great job! And I am sorry I didn't buy this sooner.
Excellent "mini Photoshop" for iPhone
Austin_Al 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
Used it 4 months now. THE single most *useful* photo utility for iPhone. Great, essential features, yet more stable that any other photo app. Fast workflow too.
Very nice!
Bob the Plumber 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
I've had this app for a while, and it's quite useful. It has never crashed. The interface is solid and the tools are good.
Not a bad app
Seveniron 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
It helps me make crappy pics better. Love the crop tool
Good - But My Hopes Were Too High
TJ Brandt 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
Being that my entire career is built around photoshop, I had higher expectations when I read and heard that this was compared to it. BUT that's like apples to oranges. It definitely beats out 98% of the other photo apps and the other 2% are strong competetors or do something else entirely. Photogene does, however, have one of the greatest, if not greatest, UI among current photo editing apps.
