5 apps for the Zombie Apocalypse
Calendar16 Fri, 28 Oct 2011 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
It's much harder to put together a 5 Apps post for the Zombie Apocalypse than you might think. Do we focus on serious topics like first aid, or do we try to inject a little humor like Plants vs. Zombies for "training skills"? In the end, we came to the conclusion that this was simply too complex a topic to limit to just five app titles. We give you five app topics instead -- and we've skipped the entertainment component. In that spirit of deadly serious preparedness training, we give you "5 App Categories for the Zombie Apocalypse." First Aid The app store is brimming with first aid applications. We liked the free Know-it-All First Aid refresher app, which seems to have plenty of good reviews and cover the basics. Other well-reviewed apps included Pocket First Aid and CPR ($3.99), and Emergency First Aid & Treatment Guide ($0.99). Emergency health response Read More

American Heart Assn.'s Pocket First Aid and CPR app. (Jive Media) |By Francesca Lunzer Kritz, Special to the Los Angeles Times "Is there an app for that?" When it comes to consumer healthcare applications for smart phones, the answer, increasingly, is yes. There are now close to 6,000 consumer health apps, according to a review published in March by mobihealthnews, which reports on the mobile health industry, and more are being added every day. Many are free, or cost $1 to $10 to download. Some physicians are concerned about the reliability of the medical information provided by many of these apps, which offer advice and information on a wide array of health topics, including how to find a doctor, first aid for an emergency and exercise instructions. And they worry that consumers could follow an app's guidance for, say, monitoring high blood pressure, and leave it at that — forgoing visits Read More

iPhone App That Saved Life in Haiti Sees Sales Surge
Calendar16 Mon, 01 Feb 2010 19:17:50 UTC +00:00
by We wrote recently about how Dan Woolley used a medical app on his iPhone to help save his life after being trapped in the rubble after the Haiti earthquake. That program, the American Heart Association’s Pocket First Aid & CPR app [iTunes link], saw its sales skyrocket after the media coverage of Woolley’s experience. AdAge reports that despite the $3.99 first aid app competing with other free and lower-cost medical apps, it climbed from number 97 on the list of top paid apps in the Apple App Store to break the top 50, ultimately peaking at position 49. This is an impressive feat for the non-entertainment app, which rose above perennially popular titles like Shazam and CNN Mobile. While he wouldn’t disclose actual revenue figures from the sales bump, Jive Media co-founder Doug Kent did say, “The sales increase has been pretty dramatic.” He said the app made its way Read More

iPhone-applicatie redt aardbevingsslachtoffer in Haïti
Calendar16 Thu, 21 Jan 2010 07:47:40 UTC +00:00

A well-written first aid guide
SKSF 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
A must have, especially for only $1.99. This app could be a life saver. The content is will-written and concise, and covers topics ranging from CPR to snake bites to hypothermia.
FULL of useful information
MaseBase 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app is wonderfully concise and organized! It's important to know what to do in almost any medical emergency. Heart attack, stroke, burns, bites, you name it. Tons of articles and easy to find.
Everyone should have this in their pocket at all times
agdon 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
What a fantastic application! It is incredibly well designed and easy to use. Vital information available in a few taps to find medical answers when time is critical. I highly recommend this app and look forward to seeing how it and other apps from Jive Media evolve.
Good to keep around just-in-case
sconcrete 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I can't say I use this app every day, but I feel better having it around. We have a nine month old baby, and it just makes me feel slightly more in control that I can quickly lookup all kinds of first aid information on my iPhone. The user interface is easy to navigate, and the instructions are easy to read. Great app!
Good First Aid Guide
surflvr911sc 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This guide is nicely done, and much better than the other first aid apps at the same price or less. I would like to see the infant and child procedures added to CPR and Heimlich. Even if you don't have your own kids, knowing what to do when a child/infant chokes or stops breathing will save a life.
Great App
Michael.Kartchner 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I would have given 5 stars but the app does need to break down the Rescue Breathing and CPR procedures for Child and Infant CPR. Being a Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructor I did find this app to be very handy and the information is very concise. I am excited to see what new upgrades will be coming out. One area I would like to see is a Emergency Number area e.g. Poison Control, Local Fire, Sheriffs, Police, even utilities like gas, power and phone.
A Must Have App for First Aid Preparation, A True Bargain for the Peace of Mind
kgbird 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Everyone should have this app on their iPhone or iPod Touch. In a first aid emergency, even if you don't have web access, the content is always there, just what you need when you need it, to the point and with no fluff. Just for the peace of mind in knowing you're prepared for a first aid emergency, this app is true bargain if you ask me!
Kudos and feature request
jbiesi 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great app for version 1.0! Would it be a good idea to add "Blood Type" to my info?
Excellent app
BlueGa whale 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Intuitive interface. Excellent content. Looking forward to update with pictures & video.
Great
alreger 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Amazing app. However, it needs some diagrams (how to do CPR, different types of snakes so you know how to treat). Other than that...I'm impressed.
Perfect for me
Sick Dave 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I race with motorcyclists and never know how to treat a crashed friend. Now I can feel helpful :D thanks!
Comprehensive
Not Another Nickname 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The most comprehensive of the first aid guide for iPhone. It would be nice to have a setting (as in Phone Aid) that allows you to change the emergency number if you're traveling or reside outside the US.
Good tool.
Sound drop 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app is useful as a quick resource. It's also nice to have contacts and medical information on the phone in case of an emergency. Neat and efficient interface manuverability. Good way to prepared!
Clear and concise
DD81 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Great app to have in the pocket, easy to read, keep up the good work! Looking forward to future updates.
Nice program
golfer0222 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Nice program but would like to see the following added. 1. Add a second doctors name and information 2. Add current/history health problems. Such as heart problem - diabetes 3. Add blood type 4. Add if your an organ donor
Very nice no frills first aid application
mpthompson 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Perfect little application to keep tucked away on your iPhone for the day you'll need quick access to basic first aid and health info. Also serves a nice place to keep and find your own emegency contact information.
Good App To Have On Hand
Playboy Baby! 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a good app to have on hand. I have a niece who is at the age where she wants to touch everything or try and put it in her mouth. I would have given it 5 stars but I would like to have seen quick pictures on how to perform certain task. Because in an emergency you won't have time to read a paragraph.
Great start
ThomyNC 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Excellent collection for something you hope you won't need but still good to have. I agree with other reviewers though that the lack of any illustrations makes hard to quickly access the information.
Worth the money
arethosecracksfromyou? 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Serves as a nice little reference. I'm sure if I need to use some of the emergency first aid info I'll be happy I paid the $1.99.
Too little info for $2
Shmuelik 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
What about a self help section for self treatment. please add more cases of sickness
Pet First Aid
news4u1312 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This is a great app but it would be wonderful if the developers would either come out with an update that had a section for Pet First Aid OR developed a separate application for it. The American Red Cross has a wonderful pet first aid handbook which a developer could work with them, I'm sure, to develop such an app. The Humane Society of the United States and the American Humane Association also offer wonderful tips. It would also be nice if the app would link to online articles AND at least have the basics available even if you're not within wireless access, especially since so many pet owners travel with their pets these days. Thank you!
A Must Have App!
ctall33 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Excellent app chock-full of useful information. Can you think of another app that can actually help save your life.... I think not!
Great to have but needs more...
BigBuddhaXXXL 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Anyone who has had basic first aid or CPR training won't be learning anything new. Would really benefit from photos and diagrams.
Great but needs additions
Clutch1288 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
What about some additions for common yard bites like ants and caterpillars? Also, everyone doesn't have access to first aid kits so how about adding some common herbal and household treatments for bites? Great otherwise !
Don't leave home without it!
Marcj09 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Think of this well thought out product like the emergency kit in your car: just because you don't want to have to actually use it doesn't mean it's not extremely valuable. Consider this an essential part of your digital Swiss army knife. Get one.
Nice app
JOSENKEILA 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Very nice but would like to see more!!! some pictures or videos on the next update!!! Great start!!!
Bare bones...
ksonnenberg 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
IMHO $1.99 is too much for this app. It's really bare bones with minimal information. Graphics would be nice but there are none. Hopefully the author will put some more effort into in subsequent updates.
Great App
sbean09 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
It's been years since I took a CPR or First Aid course ... so app is a great refresher. I especially like the videos and the ability to add my family's medical info.
Wow!
EzDSF 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
The new update is incredible. It's all American Heart Association videos, illustration, and guides. I'm really impressed. Talk about a must-have for everyone.
Udate takes it from sufficient to SUPERIOR!
RJayK 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
The original version was sufficient for a quick reference in an emergency and better than similar apps in my opinion. I just updated this app and all I can say is "What an update!" The new version has videos and a variety of additions that truly make this a SUPERIOR first aid application. What a pleasant surprise.
Absolute must-have iPhone App
McLikey 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
This is one of those apps that everyone should keep on their phone. Excellent pictures, videos, and instructions to help you out in any situation. I'm already a supporter of the American Heart Association and this app definitely lives up to the name.
great app - helpful videos!
Nick Nash 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
I'm really impressed with version 2 of this app. The interface is easy to navigate and the videos are a fantastic reference tool. Nice work!
My professional & personal review.
RNNitengale 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Thumbs up...as a mother, grand mother, and as a Registered Nurse. Public education is a MUST and not everyone can aford to pay, however, when it comes to saving a life...how can anyone place a price? I know, I buried a gran daughter, that was suppossed to have buried me.
Buy this app as soon as you get your iPhone
Will Huntington 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Don't call your mom, don't check your email. Buy this app and save lives. Great content, great user interface, a must have for all iPhone users. For 2 bucks it's a heck of a deal. Now new and improved!!!
