4 Great Guitar Apps for iPhone and iPad
Calendar16 Mon, 24 Jan 2011 15:34:46 UTC +00:00
Sorry, this picture never gets old… We've talked many, many times about turning the iPad and other iDevices into musical instruments. The touchscreen allows for various new kinds of instrument interfaces to be built around the simple flat surface of these devices. We've posted videos of musicians doing their thing. Now it's time to show you some Apps that can be used to accomplish similar results, or at least entertain you for a while. Hit the jump to check out cool iOS guitar Apps:     1) OMGuitar  OMGuitar is a guitar synth by the makers of Seline HD. One of the things we‚Äôve always thought the developers were good at was creating nice playing interfaces that fit the iOS devices they are played on. While there are many great guitar Apps, we like the interface on this one. What‚Äôs also really cool is that it integrates well with the developer‚Äôs Read More
Video: Making Music With the iPhone

posted by Jonathan Kizer on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 7:54 pm.   I think that we can all agree that the iPhone has a very smooth music app; after all, it’s the best iPod ever made. However, you might not know that a couple of the versatile little devices can take the place of actual instruments. When a couple of guys who were, naturally, in a band had their instruments stolen from them in the Big Apple, they decided to broaden their horizons… and they settled on their phones. After searching for apps (personally, I think I can spot PocketGuitar and Drum Kit; shout out in the comments if you know the others), and undoubtedly practicing for hours and hours, they were finally able to perform for a live audience on a train. Of course, there is a video depicting the considerable shock most had when they saw these musicians Read More

Apple Hits 1 Billion App Store Downloads!
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Apr 2009 23:24:28 UTC +00:00
Apple was expected to serve up their 1 Billionth (with a capital B) App Store download today, and lo and behold, Apple has announced that they’ve officially seen 1 billion iPhone/iPod Touch applications downloaded from their iTunes App Store! In less than a full year of existence, Apple and the iPhone have managed to make mobile applications as commonplace as an iTunes music purchase, and the App Store’s popularity continues to grow. The total tally of iPhone applications in the iPhone AppStore was estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 in March 2009. And, with thousands more iPhone applications hitting the AppStore on a monthly basis, Apple’s success with their integrated mobile application delivery model will likely continue. No wonder everyone and their grandmother are trying to launch mobile application stores of their own. For the record, it took Apple six whole months to reach the 500-million milestone. From Read More

A VERY fun app - Amazing use of iPhone tech.
Acedian 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
PocketGuitar is an extremely fun app (so far)... I bought it last night, played around with it a bit before bed, and this morning picked up the iPhone and started it up... So far, it froze once and one time only in over an hour of play (what app really doesn't have its bugs initially) For an app in its initial version, this one plays very nicely on the iPhone. First off... for all of you who experience 'no sound'... realize that the bottom space below the fret board is where you strum... then you get sound (of course, make sure your iPhone is up to date, has the sound on, etc. etc... simply put, "plug it in first." You can also achieve sound on the fret board by going to the app's prefs ("settings" slider at top of fret board... a nice touch), and choosing ON for "pluck automatically." Then each point along the fret board becomes a note that you can sustain, distort, etc. Speaking of which, the few effects are a nice (and necessary) touch, and the fact that you can modify them helps enormously-- really and adds to the fun. Go distort the ukulele (YES!) and add some chorus, maybe some delay, and you'll sound like the sick, twisted love child of Don Ho and Jimi Hendrix... awesome stuff! The Bass is very nice, though the distortion effect (or nearly any effect) on the bass over the iPhone's speakers is-- well, too distorted... sounds kinda crappy actually, but sounds decent on the earbuds. Now, as I said you can strum the space below the fret board and the strings will sound off just fine, however, you can also resize the fretboard (a brilliant touch, Shinya Kasatani) from the left/right or top/bottom to achieve a possibly better board layout for your fingers while strumming... however you can lose sight of the strumming area a bit... don't freak... just resize it with a pinch of the fingers or if you've totally lost it... hit the "default" button at the top (yay!). This feature, right here, makes PocketGuitar one of the best apps I've picked up so far, and one of the very best interactive apps. It turned my brain on and my creative side up to 11. Suddenly, and trust me I'm no guitar hero or musician, I was playing chords and strumming along to the music in my head (or on the radio). Fun fun fun... serious fun! I'm sure this app will only get better in subsequent versions to come (play along with iPod??) and am already eagerly awaiting the next version. This is my first review of any iPhone app, but it deserved it :)
a waste of money
snikduj 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I believe most of the reviews written for this application were written by shills. You can't play chords on this guitar because only 1 string can be pressed at a time. There is too much lag to even plunk out a tune (unless it is very slow) This has potential but right now this is a rip-off.
Unreal I love it
Dragoncqb 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I give this 5 out of 5 like most of you I downloaded it and spent the next few hours playing with it. If you play or would like to play or have a intrest in guitar this app is one you will enjoy, can not get over getting it for .99cents. I set it to classical set the first fx to delay and with a little time was playing a pretty nice wildwood flower this app is a ball thank you. To those who have no sound, if you downloaded it straight to you device delete it try downloading it to your pc then sync up it might help, might not but it might. I hope it dose everyone should enjoy this app it is now my all time fav it was Koi Pond but now its POCKET GUITAR !!! . Can not wait for the updates they sound like they will expand this app to great hights. Just tried this if you start this app before the headphones are pluged in on the Ipod Touch you will not have sound you must connect the headphones then start the app try it.
Read Acedian's review before complaining
T.shane 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Please don't write a review until you understand how an app works. This is an amazing application at a bargain price. I've been using it since beta and only paid for it because I support the developer and want him to continue improving and refining his product. Acedian's review explains all you need to know to get started, so if you wrote a negative review, read those instructions and then consider posting a retraction. It's .99 cents, people. I'd pay a lot more, and a greedy developer would have charged a ton for an application of this quality.
Epic win
Maestro skillz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
PocketGuitar is now even better than I expected. Great sounds, and after a while, I got the hang of playing chords on it like a real guitar. A must-have!
Amazing app
GloppityGlop 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Incredible little dream app for guitarists allows fretting the chords and playing on the fretboard. Electric, acoustic, classical, bass, even ukulele, plus chorus, delay and distortion, all with various parameters. Visible fretboard adjustable, shrinkable to fit more on screen, but at the expense of finger space. It's great fun and really lets you explore and play a bit when stuck without a guitar. Ridiculously low price! I've been waiting for this one!
Cool
T-mofo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I got a guitar for $.99
One of Those "Oh, snap!" Apps on the Same Page as PhoneSaber
erhosion 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app reminds me a lot of PhoneSaber in the way that it can easily be used to show friends the kind of unique, creative and crazy things the iphone can do.
No kind of substitute for the real thing.
hoofsmith 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Even if this app were smoother, it would still be only slightly useful or entertaining. Fretting the guitar is clumsy at best and although you can play first position chords if you fret very carefully, any kind of run is nearly impossible.
A must have for any level guitarist!
Meltdown123456 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Awesome
Awesome
Clamonster 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Well worth the money and time.. Thanks for the hard work!
Great job! My new favorite app.
John Casasanta 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been waiting for this to come out. It's done really well... the guitar and effects sound pretty realistic. It's a lot of fun to play with. Highly recommended, whether you play guitar already or want to learn. At just a buck, this is an app you shouldn't pass up.
Still a brilliant app
Kahnyl 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Always thought this was a great app, and now it's even better. The accelerometer addition is fun along with the ability to add two effects at once. The whole user experience is smoother than it was before the App Store existed and it's definitely worth the tiny amount asked for it now. I would have had no problem paying for the jailbreak version, I certainly don't have one with paying now.
Very fun
Shakyl 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been foolin round wit it for a while..very fun and a great price
There is sound
JohhnyBravo 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
But you have to strum the strings, you know...like a REAL guitar...
Brilliant
Wyobantam 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Love it. Would love a few more frets, pull-offs, etc. Still, a bargain and one of the best apps out there.
eh
nevercoolenuf4u 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
A pretty cool app, definitely for the price. I played it awhile the first few days I got it, but haven't touched it since. You can play chords, but its near impossible with bigger hands. This app would be perfect if I had mini hands.
Yes
Hondune 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's awesome! I love it! But you should fix were when you take your finger off the sound quits
Please make "let ring" option for Auto-notes
BlueGem64 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app, definitely my favorite from the old Jailbreak days. The new improved features are amazing, ESPECIALLY the new Auto-note feature that plays a note by simpy touching the fret and sting, no strumming needed. However, one thing that I think is an absolute necessity for the next update is an option to let that note ring when hit. The auto-note is great, but if you are trying to play something without holding each note, the notes do not ring, they only play as long as you hold it. That takes away from the experience, IMO. Ultimately, AMAZING application, developer be proud of this app. WELL worth the money. Please add the note ringing option tho, thanks :) Five stars, regardless
The sound works, dodos
JazzCritic 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Your thumb is turning it down when you try to make a chord (note for developer to disable external volume button). Great job guys! This is as good as any guitar app could be ok the iPhone. Oh, one thing. Please add ability to hammer on.
Great app Great price
6effrey 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Time-tested, wonderful application - a favorite since the 1.1.x incarnations. So glad to see it back and with very cool new features.
Nail meet head
tonyspony 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Acedian has taken the words out of my mouth, literally. I echo everything she or he has said. I will add that I've been a follower of Pocket Guitar, Shinya's baby since nearly the inception: January. From the YouTube videos, the Google group, and everywhere in-between I've been waiting for this to come out. I downloaded it nearly an hour after it went live. I haven't looked back. Reading the reviews to the tune of "Best app ever!" are not surprising; they only confirm what I already knew. I will also say that this app is the first to take my money - a large effort in and of itself. I suspect this app to be the most worthwhile and fun one for a long, long time. I think it's nearly flawless in current version - I can only imagine how much better it will get as time and updates come. If you're on the fence about buying any app, be it cost or other factors let me ease your mind. Get this one. Get this one. Get this one. You won't regret it. It's the very reason why I searched for my accoustic guitar in my attic that I bought a few years ago. I started learning chords last night. This app inspired me to get back into what I set to do: learn the guitar! May Shinya receive all the accolades and prosperity that he truely deserves.
Too cool for words
App Addicted 5.0 stars Version: 1.0

Why are some people so neg.
Gettynut93 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Think people you are playing a 6 string on a phone. What do you want for a buck a full size flying v? A year ago did you ever think a thing like this would be ever poss. Kudos to the creator. I love it should get 5 stars for trying such a app.
Experienced musician
Weie 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.2

Dont buy it!
Ri. 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.2
Its boring and nothing like a real guitar.
Don't buy it
Ninja Jr 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.2
This thing is confusing and sounds nothing like a guitar. I would rather spend a buck a dollar sandwhich than this piece of crap.
