Ten iPhone and iPad Apps for the Stargazing Astronomy Fan
Calendar16 Tue, 03 Aug 2010 14:18:54 UTC +00:00
With the news that the Sun has sent a blast of plasma towards the Earth hitting the headlines this week, thanks mainly to the prospect of the famed Northern Lights potentially being visible from parts of the UK and North America, we thought it was a good time to highlight the wealth of astronomy-related applications that are available for the iPhone and the iPad. Here are ten which standout: You can purchase an iPhone app for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, but we’ve linked to the iPad-specific version, simply because we think it benefits from the increased screen size.  The night sky is still rendered on your iPad, with the positions and names of stars and planets, plus outlines of constellations and lunar phase information.  It’s easy to use too.  $4.99/£2.99. Well-known and beautifully designed, this is perhaps aimed more at entertaining the casual user than the hardcore enthusiast, but Read More

Great for observers
Cheule 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.4
On my iPhone, I own 5 astronomy apps. of them, the most impressive feature wise is StarMap Pro and the least impressive feature wise is Star Walk. (although Star Walk is the most flashy) Even though Pocket universe doesn't fall into either category, I find myself using it as much if not more than the others. I find it has the best lunar phase calendar, and the ability to see where the four major moons for Jupiter and Saturn are at the moment is a great feature for observers. In fact, I find pocket universe to be very well designed for the amateur astronomy observer. A few words about the iPad version; it's gone from completely broken to almost working. The developer is working hard on getting it up to speed now that he has an iPad, and for a limited time has the app on sale to encourage people to bear with him during the apps growing pains. As of 2.0.4 the app mostly works, but expect a few bugs and a few rough edges. I have the utmost confidence in the developer as his iPhone app is extremely stable and well designed. But know that this app needs to mature a bit before it's completely ready for prime time. But by all means get it now at the reduced price and then enjoy watching it evolve.
