Favorite Four Apps for Photo Effects
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Nov 2011 18:30:12 UTC +00:00
By Lisa Caplan on November 9th, 2011 We look at four classic favorite apps for creating or editing photos with stunning special effects. Last week we looked at the best camera replacement apps for the iPhone native app. So, this week we wanted to continue the theme, this time looking at apps that focus on adding those ever-popular effects and filters. Many of the choices feature a camera replacement component, but all do unique things to produce end results that are anything but the average cell camera shot, no matter how high the resolution. All of these apps will make even casual photographers look like virtual experts. Instagram Instagram is all about effects and sharing and it’s completely free. This long-time user favorite allows shutter bugs to shoot right from the app or use existing images in the photo album and easily add custom filters. Most photo apps have social media Read More
HDR Fusion for iPhone is free today only
Calendar16 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 23:30:00 UTC +00:00
Even though I do a lot of high end photo work, I still enjoy using the iPhone's camera, and i was especially happy to see Apple add HDR capabilities to the iPhone 4. HDR lets you get good pictures under challenging conditions when there is a mixture of very bright light, like the sky, and objects in shadow. I've also checked a lot of the third-party HDR apps, and most exceed the quality of the built in HDR feature. Today only, HDR Fusion is free, so it's a nice Friday present for those thinking about going beyond the Apple HDR and trying something a bit better. The app is normally US$1.99. HDR Fusion grabs two images, one underexposed and one overexposed, then tone maps them to a combined exposure that doesn't blow out the bright parts or lose the shadows. In my quick tests, the app worked well in both the auto Read More

A Technique For Photos Real and Surreal
Calendar16 Sun, 14 Aug 2011 23:37:02 UTC +00:00
The eye can see a much wider range of light and dark than a camera. That’s why windows come out as a blurry masses of white in your daytime indoor shots but it doesn’t look that way to the naked eye. But a controversial fix is becoming a popular technique to adjust images to look more like the way you perceive them. It is called high dynamic range photography. HDR uses software to mash together the best parts of several photos shot at different exposures so over-lit and under-lit sections are eliminated. The travel photographer and educator Rick Sammon has become such a fan that he has produced a book on the topic and an iPad how-to app. “We can create a realistic image, but what some people like to do is create an artistic image,” said Mr. Sammon. That artistry is the source of the controversy. Some photographers use HDR Read More
Favorite Four: Creative iPhone Camera Apps
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Mar 2011 18:30:44 UTC +00:00
By Chris Nitz on March 9th, 2011 Some of the best camera apps for the iPhone! Love it or hate it, the iPhone is a big player when it comes to on the go photography. Many people no longer buy point and shoot cameras as they already have their iPhone with them everywhere they go. Apple has dedicated a section of the App Store to Camera and Photography apps. There are even photographers who have dedicated columns to “iPhoneography.” If you happen to fit into the group of users that loves taking photos with your iPhone, but want something to help make those photos more unique, we have four apps perfect for taking your photos further. Hipstamatic:Hipstamatic was one of the first apps to take the iPhone camera and give it a retro feel. Now this app has become a must own for many people. Hipstamatic gives you plenty of options Read More

posted by D. St. Charles on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at 6:28 pm.   Scientists at M.I.T and Columbia University, among others, suggest the future of digital cameras may not be more megapixels or better lenses, but rather the digital manipulation of the data through a discipline called computational photography.  One scientist at M.I.T. is working on a camera that doesn’t even use a lens to see objects around corners.  Lasers fire pulses of light and the rebounding data is used to model the structure of the unseen landscape. And the scientific applications are not relegated to unobtainable hardware.  M.I.T’s Camera Culture group is also experimenting with the humble smartphone in the form of the Nokia N900, aka the Frankencamera.  They’ve hacked the phone’s Linux operating system and suggest real innovations are possible once anyone can program the camera and try their hand at computational photography.  Two apps are available in the Read More
Pro HDR adds geotagging
Calendar16 Sun, 03 Oct 2010 19:15:00 UTC +00:00
I've liked Pro HDR since it was first released. The HDR technique blends two or more exposures to capture better dynamic range in difficult lighting conditions. Apple provided some competition by building in HDR with the release of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.1, but I still like the control that Pro HDR gives me both before and after the pictures are taken. One of the big drawbacks to Pro HDR is that the location metadata and other picture information was not saved in the combined image, so location and other EXIF data was not available. That meant the 'Places' feature from Apple wouldn't work. Now that's fixed. It was the biggest single complaint that users of the app had. Another advantage to PRO HDR is that it works on the iPhone 3GS and the 4th generation iPod touch, as well as the iPhone 4. It means owners of the 3GS Read More
The HDR race continues as TrueHDR gets updated
Calendar16 Mon, 13 Sep 2010 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
We've been keeping a close eye on the race for the best HDR (high dynamic range) photo app for the iPhone. In my latest survey, I advised that progress would be fast as paid apps move to compete with the free Apple HDR software, and that's what's happened. TrueHDR, a US$1.99 app, has been updated to add a fast Autocapture mode and a SemiAuto mode (where you can drag the exposure control points around to get the best picture). I thought it was worth another quick look in order to see how the updated TrueHDR compares to Pro HDR ($1.99) and the built-in iPhone 4 camera (with and without the HDR processing). My results were similar to the last test, although TrueHDR takes the photos faster. Sadly, it still lags in processing, taking 48 seconds to deliver a finished image. Pro HDR takes 24 seconds, and Apple's built in HDR delivers Read More

Caught in the Wake of Apple’s Press Events
Calendar16 Thu, 02 Sep 2010 20:00:29 UTC +00:00
After each Apple press event, there is a visible track of turbulence online, in the technology market and on Wall Street that some cannot help but get caught within. There is no denying that when Apple decides to head in a particular direction, it will lead. And all that is left for the rest of us to decide is whether or not we will follow or get out-of-the-way. When you continually take such wide strides in innovation, intentional or unintentional, there will always be casualties. In 2010 alone, Apple held no less than five major media events that in some way affected the way markets were defined and revenues were earned for a significant number of companies. This year we have witnessed the fall of HP’s Slate that Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer introduced at CES, a massive shift in consumer purchasing behavior in the netbook market and media moguls struggle with the Read More
iOS 4.1 offers new photo features, bug fixes
Calendar16 Wed, 01 Sep 2010 18:57:39 UTC +00:00
Jobs shows the new features of iOS 4.1. Though music and entertainment were the of focus of Wednesday's Apple press conference in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs devoted a few minutes to the next release of the company's mobile operating system. iOS 4.1 will be available next week for the iPhone and iPod Touch. And in a change from previous OS updates, it will be free for iPod Touch users. Here's a summary of the new features that Jobs announced. We'll add to this list as we learn of other additions and we'll follow up with a hands-on review after next week's release. Bug fixes These will be for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance. Though Jobs didn't detail the specific problems that Apple is fixing, we've experienced the latter two issues on the iPhone 4 and previous models. In fact, Bluetooth connectivity with stereo headsets was one of Read More
It must be the week for HDR app updates. Yesterday we reviewed a solid update of TrueHDR, and now we have another terrific update from Even if you're not into HDR photography, this is one to check out. High Dynamic Range photography creates an image from multiple exposures that are combined to overcome the limitations of automatic exposure control in cameras. The technique can recover details that would be lost in shadows, and keep bright areas, like the sky from blowing out. The update to Pro HDR, which has just been released, has a new fully automatic mode. Instead of taking two pictures with your iPhone, and manually pointing to the brightest and darkest areas, this new option analyzes the scene, sets the exposure accordingly, and then takes the two images without any user intervention. You can also use the manual mode if you prefer. The app also claims faster image Read More
How-To: iPhone HDR
Calendar16 Mon, 16 Aug 2010 21:00:58 UTC +00:00
The iPhone has a great little camera, but it’s got serious limitations. Anyone who’s ever tried to capture a scene with a wide range of light knows that it doesn’t take much for the iPhone’s camera to completely lose the high or low end of the spectrum. I run into this limitation all the time when I’m out on a hike and come across a vista I want to capture. If there’s any kind of sun at all, I’m forced to choose between either exposing for the foreground and losing the sky in a big wash of white, or exposing for the sky and losing the foreground in darkness. Either way, there’s pretty much zero chance of accurately capturing the scene. Unless, of course, I resort to HDR. If you’re not familiar with the process of HDR imaging, the overall concept is really pretty simple. By merging multiple images, each individually Read More

Very, very impressive
Act Only Bravo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow. I've played with Pro HDR for a few hours and taken several test shots, and am very impressed. It works extremely well! Highlights: * Very sophisticated blending multiple exposures. They come together (alignment, color) almost magically. * The images are full iPhone camera resolution. Unlike other HDR apps I've used, which downsample images significantly, this app outputs the "real thing" – a full resolution image that you could actually use, even in a small print. * Easy, intuitive interface. * Nice color controls after the merge to adjust for things like indoor lighting. * Fast! Works very quickly -- only a few seconds to process everything. Summary: If you care at all about getting good photos from your iPhone, this is the best $1.99 you can spend in the App Store.
Beautiful results, excellent (and prompt) tech support.
iTunesfool 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am very pleased with Pro HDR. The program. gives you many superior features. It also allows you to save in your native resolution, which is much better than other HDR apps. Highly recommended, five stars.
OUTSTANDING Photography App
lennygold 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Rating: 5+! Probably the most frustrating aspect of the iPhone's camera is that it cannot handle scenes/landscapes with brightness extremes. Pro HDR COMPLETELY solves this problem, enabling the user to take beautiful photos that were previously impossible to capture with the iPhone. And to the reviewer who rated it '1' because it is not compatible with your phone, you should have noticed that before purchasing it!
ProHDR 1.0 only works on 3GS
alwaysmprest 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
This looks like an OK program, and I bought it (double the regular price!) to try it out---only to discover that it won't even install on my (not very old) 3G. This lack of customer support and information is not a good sign.
Library IS still alive and working.

Absolutely Amazing!
TheLeopard418 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
The dynamic range possible via this app far exceeds that of professional cameras. It makes impossible photos possible. I keep trying "worst case scenarios" and they come out great. Auto mode is very good but manual is even better!
HDR'ing everything !
COS43 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
Great app makes me feel like professional photographer. Taking picture of the most uneventful thing and making them seem awesome.
HDR quality is better then my dslr
Crazybunta 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
Fast, easy to use and incredible eye-popping results. I have several high end cameras and they will not come close to the results here unless you spend 15 minutes in Photoshop to adjust everything.
$$ well spent :)
King Leung 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
I don't usually buy apps... But this app is doing such a good job! The only thing this app is lacking is geotagging... I have to manually do that somehow...
Ecstatic! Highly Recommended
iApp4 5.0 stars Version: 3.01
I was ecstatic upon receiving these major improvements, especially for iPad.I appreciate the continued improvements in keeping PRO HDR my "First Choice" photo app. I have used the "Pro HDR" App for over 80% of my photos taken with my iPhone 4. It takes gorgeous photos with each tap on the screen. Now I can use it for photos with my iPad 2. Thanks! This app effectively creates "High Quality" photos in a style that suits me. I would highly recommended this app to a friend or colleague.
