For many first-grade students, the best way to let your teacher know what you want is to raise your hand or shout out your request. But for some special needs students, it's difficult to speak or put thoughts into words. Marin County, California is now using iPads to help these students communicate with their instructors. Through grants from a fundraising organization called Dedication to Special Education, all 19 Marin County school districts have been receiving technology to help out special needs students. What's changing the face of technology for these students is the iPad. As noted by Sarah King, the co-chairwoman of Dedication to Special Education, "We've gone from a DynaVox, which costs about US$8,000, to a $500 iPad that does essentially the same thing. And the iPad is a lot easier for students to manipulate." The organization plans to use about $85,000 of their grant money to purchase as many Read More
Noah Rahman has moderate Cerebral Palsy affecting his communication, cognition and upper and lower body movement. When he turned two, his language, cognitive abilitity and fine motor skills were diagnosed by a developmental specialist as being at least 12 months behind. Then Noah got an iPad. Four months later, his language and cognition were on par with his age level. His fine motor skills had made significant leaps. Today, the three-year-old (pictured at right with his father) spends an hour or two on his iPad each day. He switches his apps between reading and writing in English, Arabic and Spanish. In the fall, he’ll enter a classroom of five-year-olds. “The iPad unlocked his motivation and his desire because it’s fun,” says his dad Sami Rahman, co-founder of SNApps4Kids, a community of parents, therapists and educators sharing their experiences using the iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and Android to help children with special Read More
Speech therapist Barbrara Fernandez founded Smarty-Ears apps last January and has since created over 15 apps for the field. I spoke to her about Expressive (US$29.95) an augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) app that at first seems similar to the much more expensive Proloquo2Go, but it serves two purposes. Like most AAC apps or devices, it allows those without the power of speech due to Autism, Downs Syndrome or even temporary verbal problems to communicate. Tapping on categorized symbols allow one to build phrases that are spoken. The app contains 450 pre-set symbols and more can be added. The second purpose of the app is to teach language and the relationship between symbols and words. Many children have a limited vocabulary and too many unfamiliar symbols would be confusing and overwhelming. "You can start out and delete everything and slowly build the vocabulary and specifically design the application to meet the needs of Read More
AutoVerbal Talking Soundboard Pro helps the non-verbal
Calendar16 Fri, 01 Oct 2010 19:34:29 UTC +00:00
Soundboard based help for autistic and non-verbal people Being able to speak and communicate with others is something that many of us take for granted. It’s not so easy for many folks though, in particular for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, as well as those who have suffered various brain disabilities such as strokes or other conditions. Enter AutoVerbal Talking soundboard app, something that could make life simpler for many. While it’s not Proloquo2Go, the premier communication app, it’s also much more affordable. It’s a typical soundboard application with the inclusion of 100s of phrases as well as the option to program several buttons with custom messages. You can even type in exactly what you want to say and it says it! A history function also means that you don’t have to repeat yourself too often. Some of the phrases might be a little out there (from our perspective) and maybe Read More

Proloquo2Go [iTunes Link] is not your usual iPhone/iPod touch app. It turns the mobile device into a full augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device. According to the AAC Institute, an estimated 2.5 million Americans are speech disabled to the extent that they experience significant difficulty being understood by other people. Reasons vary, but are often the result of congenital illness or ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). One alternative is learning how to use sign language, but that requires both adequate sensory motor ability of the user and a knowledge of sign language expected in the listener. It's a solution that helps some, but not all. When signing is not available or appropriate, using an AAC device may well be. AAC devices use combinations of symbols, words, sounds and technology to allow people without functional vocal abilities to communicate. The cost of such devices range from around US$3,500 to US$8,500 Read More

Let's take a second to reflect upon how far we've come, from phone owners without the near-decade-old service that people don't really use that much, to people with it. That far! In other, slightly more scheduled iPhone news: some apps! 12Mail: MMS has only been working on the iPhone for what, four hours? So, uh, here's an alternative! 12Mail sends short—12 second, to be exact—video messages to your Twitter or Facebook account instantly, and for free. And if you designate a recipient who also has 12Mail, they get a push notification for you message. In other words, it can behave exactly like an MMS, except without using any of your monthly allotment. Cinq: You can access your entire Mac photo library with your iPhone over the air, sort of like with Simplify's nearly identical photo sharing app. A couple things: Cinq's take on the concept seems to work slightly more smoothly, Read More

The Reason I Bought My iPhone
Kara SPEAKS! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I bought my iPhone last August because I am severely speech-impaired due to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). I fooled around with many note-writing apps and playing pre-recorded messages so I could communicate on the go. I am ambulatory, but very weak, so the iPhone, with an easy-grip skin and a homemade long lanyard makes a perfect device for me. All I needed was a true AAC app. I waited, and now it's here. I am blown away by the sophistication and superior voice quality of this first ever AAC app for iPhone/Pod! I love that the app allows so much user customization. I have the iPhone 3G, and I find the built-in speaker to be adequate. I've used P2G in the car (not driving), and driver and even passengers in back seat hear me fine.

As promised, Proloquo2Go is a powerful software application for people with special communication needs. This application allows the user to select from menus or type in the message he/she wants to get across. The application was easy to learn and adapt for the needs of my daughter with Down syndrome. Thanks for a wonderful product that works well, is reasonably priced, and is "cool" enough that my daughter will actually use it!

Proloquo2Go is a super cool, super portable, and super affordable augmentative communication app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Since January, I’ve been testing p2g with a 9 year old who has autism, and we both love it. It’s been so cool to see how he communicates with others on the go at school. I’m just so happy that the app is now available in iTunes for everyone to use. Hats off to the developers, Samuel Sennott and David Niemeijer, for all their hard work on p2g. Their app is going to completely change the world of augmentative communication.

I must say its a new, neat way to communicate, esp for people who are on the go and can access the iphone/ipod touch. It is a good inexpensive alternative for kids with autism/downs syndrome. I can see it being used in many ways by many different people, some may not be able to use it because of motor issues, BUT it is a great tool building on an already great product. Great job Sam and Dave, I knew you would "take it to the next level!"
Great app - so easy and versatile.
Mom to Michael T 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is an amazing app! I bought an iTouch and Proloquo2go yesterday to try it out on my 7 year old son who has a mitochondrial disorder, autism, is non-verbal and has pretty significant fine motor control problems too. I was skeptical as to whether he could maneuver the iTouch but was thrilled to see that he is able to play many of the free games on the iTouch and is picking up quickly on the Proloquo2go. I am so excited to have something I can put in my purse and have with us all the time - its nice that I can put videos on the iTouch too.
Thank You!

My elementary child was literally bouncing out of her seat this morning to show off her Proloquo2Go voice! She had even more fun during lunch time showing her friends and friend's Mom's including our dear friend her pediatrician who thought this was fabulous. Proloquo2Go is also a great OT motivational tool for developing fine motor AAC access.

I love the software! Simple yet has a broad base of vocabulary. I like the simple folder set-up and ‘branches’. This was very well thought out! It is amazing that now you can go to the local store and buy an AAC device for the same $ you would spend on entertainment! How cool is that?!!
great!
Rakshen 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this is a great app, I'd reccomend it to everyone with an IPhone/ Ipod touch!
Highly recommended!

The Proloquo2go is fabulous!  My husband, daughter and I are  Apple customers, we have Apple computers, iPods, iPhones, a Nano, and Shuffles!  It is an Apple love-fest here in Montclair!
Proloquo2Go rocks!
VLMaples 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
We love Proloquo2Go and the power and simplicity it gives our daughter! It's a cool and powerful way to communicate and fit in; to connect with people in a personal way. The more Nichole uses it, the more we see possibilities and opportunities to give her a chance to share her wit and charm with others. Proloquo2Go works in places she cannot use her VMax. Affordable and powerful language in a great package!
Fantastic Solution!
MarkinND 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This is a really cool solution. The kids think it is so cool to have an iPod and a way to communicate. Bought an iPod Touch specifically for this application. This application shows the power of portable solutions such as the iPod and iPhone. Way to go!!!
Finally!
JoshsMomPam 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
For years, I complained:  AAC devices cost too much; they are too big, bulky, hard and heavy; most of them are too difficult to use.  My son has complex communication needs and uses multiple AAC methods, which for nearly 17 years has included at least one device that meets one or more of the above complaints.  Imagine my son’s life with the intrusive box between him and his world and the people who love him.

Innovative, creative, meeting a need in a way that makes it "cool" to be an AAC user. I have been super impressed with the creators willingness to work hard towards making a solution that is attainable to all. Compared to other vendors devices that do similiar things that are thousands of dollars - the ability for a typical family to afford this for their student is AWESOME.

Proloquo2Go is just what kids and adults who talk with technology need and have needed for years---A low cost, 'hip' and cool speaking application on a smart phone----and you can see it outside! One of my clients downloaded it last week and is having a blast customizing it. All of her friends think it rocks and those who talk with technology can't wait to get it for themselves. It is so easy to use and to customize.

AAC Girl 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Proloquo2Go will absolutely revolutionize the AAC industry! I purchased an iPhone, which I am loving, in order to learn this software for my clients. It will solve many problems with accessibility for AAC users on the go. Thanks Sam and David for creating such a useful program!
Amazing App!
AtlantaAreaAACMomtoRyan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This application is making such a positive impact in my son's journey towards becoming a competent communicator! He is not only motivated to use it because he is "cool" with his iTouch, but he is ABLE to use it in so many more situations then he was previously able to use his bulkier/heavier AAC device. He keeps the iPod in the speaker case attached to a lanyard around his neck for immediate access. I also want to mention that the ease in programming has been another huge motivator to him, he is 6 years old, and the first day he received the app. he was able to customize buttons with pictures of his friends, favorite action figures, etc. I will be forever grateful to the developers for thinking outside of the box and making AAC an affordable reality to people everywhere!
the more I use it the more I realize how incredible it is
teechkidz 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This application rivals the top AAC company from the top companies. The layout is intuitive, the programming is simple (though often not needed as the designed thought of almost everything), the symbols and text-to-speech voices are top rate and amazing. I cannot say enough wonderful things! This is not some hack application or knock off, this is the real deal, top of the line augmentative and alternative communication. I can't wait to see what is in store for Proloquo2Go next, I hope they bring us more from where this came from in the future! Kate Ahern, M.S.Ed.
P2G rocks
Martial Musician 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I was so exsited when I saw this app show up on the apraxia-kids listserv. Finally an aac device my son will want to use. He has ASD and apraxia of speech and while verbal his speech is often unclear. P2G gives him the voice he needs when others don't understand. He is only four years old, but is amazingly skilled at getting around on his new aac. Thanks Dave and Sam. It's nice having a less frustrated little guy!
The gift of speech is priceless!
Linda Kendrick 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I am a speech pathologist and am amazed with this application. One can’t put a price on what it means to a child or adult when they can reach in their pocket or purse and pull out an ipod or iphone and SAY “May I have a hamburger and French fries please? And hold the onions!!” That is “cool”.
I Have Been Waiting For This !!
Stefan's Mom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
I am the parent of a wonderful boy whose apraxia and ASD have prevented him from forming understandable words. School solutions have been devices that are VERY expensive and heavy to carry. This will not take him easily through the world. But loving his iPod Touch, as everyone does, was the PERFECT solution to his communication challenges. He is already drawn to the mobile device and other kids see him using a cool iPod. He now fits in, which is a dream of every 'special needs' parent. The pride shows all over his face.. and that is the most priceless gift of all! Thank you so much for developing this inexpensive and most wonderful AAC solution.
Rocking the world of Aug Comm.
fattykathy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
The more familiar I become with this app. the more children I think of that will benefit from it. What is there no to like. It's light-weight, portable, cool and fun. Very well thought out. It is changing the world of aug. comm.!
Excellent AAC System
AACMom 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Proloquo2Go is a high-tech AAC device that is affordable and accessible! Unlike his heavier springboard, my 4-year-old son (with low muscle tone) is able to carry the iphone and use Proloquo2Go in various locations such as the park and grocery store. I don't have to worry about spending thousands of dollars (as with traditional high-tech aac devices) to replace it if he drops the device. My typical 2-year-old daughter is able to navigate the screens to help my son make choices! We love being able to take pictures of relevant items while on the go and then use them to set up choices for him to make or to use in story telling later. There is an expansive vocabulary set that includes activity sets and phrases. For example, there is a cars activity set that we use while playing with cars to describe their movements and sounds. Although we use it primarily for greetings, making choices and describing activities at this point (where he is right now) there is an entire language system in place that we model and he will use when he is ready. We like the ability to change numbers and size of icons displayed as his needs change and output voice so that it sounds like a boy!
Deceptive description, poor graphics, useless application
Louie 48104 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
This application is useless for people who do not already have English reading and sentence skills because the pictures are so tiny and remotely intuitive. In fact, the pictures are only good as indexes to find the words. If you do not already know the words (say, many autistic individuals have minimal reading skills and do not generalize well), there is no way he/she could figure out what the icons means.
Awesome for all ages!
ALS_reader 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Great app great price!
Life Changing Communication App!!
MagSLP 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
What a powerful tool for those unable to use speech for communication! I see that of the previous 35 reviews, all but one are 5 stars. I wonder if that is some sort of record for app ratings. I also wonder if the 2 star reviewer realized that this is not a "one size" app and that it can customized by changing the size of the buttons, how they are organized, and by adding your own pictures and graphics. The authors provide wonderful tech support including lots of "how to" videos on their website. Hope the 2 star reviewer will take another look and put in some time learning to customize. Language is one of the most complex activities we humans engage in and requires time and effort. This app is an excellent framework for building a functional, portable, and "cool" way to communicate.
Nice

AAC Breakthrough
Mom of Alex 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
P2G is a breakthrough for AAC! My son has been an AAC user for about 5 - 6 years. He is 19, has severe autism, and is non-verbal. Once we got P2G, he immediately showed preference for this software on his iPod over the device he was used to. It is easy to customize. We were able to quickly add family photos and icons for favorite restaurants. Using the portable speaker, he is able to order food in restaurants and communicate with others. My son experienced success right away, and there is so much potential to help him expand his communication capabilities.

This is AWESOME!! We've tried several different AAC devices for my now 8 year old son. He has Cornelia deLange Syndrome which includes very small stature, very small hands, and severe speech delays. Currently he has no speech, but uses adapted sign language. Not everyone understands his signs so we've been trying to find the appropriate device for him. Other AAC devices are so big, bulky and very heavy. Not to mention VERY expensive. Proloquo2go on an IPOD Touch is the perfect answer for him! It's very lightweight, VERY easy to program, and VERY user friendly. Being able to program on the fly is a huge plus. I would recommend this to ANYONE who has difficulty with speech and communication. Even if your child can only use one or two buttons to start, it is sooooo worth the money. This communication application will blow the others out of the water and make them obselete. I love this being on an IPOD because we can also use it for so many other things. We have some fun games, music, videos, and his favorite pictures on there as well. There are so many great applications to download for free or very inexpensively that he loves. Now, instead of bringing along an entire backpack full of toys and things to keep him entertained, we have one source for entertainment and communication! THANK YOU!!!!
FIVE STARS!
PassionateMomma 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This App rivals AAC devices costing 5-7k and it's easier to navigate, program, as clear or clearer voice(s), and best of all user look socially appropriate carrying an iPod! There are super email chat list, email support, and awesome videos on website. My daughter with autism has used bulky AAC for 11 years and FINALLY Proloquo2Go on her iPod has turned her into a self-motivated communicator! Maybe she knows she looks cool? Maybe it's cuz she loves her iPod? Who cares!!! Woo hoo!! As a parent I wouldn't ask the school to do anything I wouldn't do myself, so we've always provided her AAC...Since PLQ is such an affordable and flexible option I hope school systems, parents and therapists look into giving all nonverbal kids voices!
Finally an AAC I can use while looking cool!!
BGMel 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I recently got an iPod Touch and downloaded Proloquo2Go. I'm still looking around all of what it can do. I have Cerebral Palsy that effects my physical and speech skills. My speech is just okay, but with this app now more people will understand me. If you get Proloquo2Go, I suggest getting a speaker for it.
This app has literally changed our son's life
Parents of 10 yr old with CP 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
If you or your child does not like lugging around a 10 pound AAC device, you will find this app nothing short of amazing. Unlike our other device, you can figure out how to use Proloquo2go immediately, even without instructions. The most time I spent on it was to just figure out where different words/symbols are located, not how to use it or program it. Our son thinks having an iTouch is very cool, especially since the same device that helps him speak also lets him play games and watch movies. If you purchase this app, make sure to join the Proloquo2go community because a wealth of information and tips are provided by other users. Not only is this app priced so that just about anyone can afford it, the creators personally and graciously answer every question that's asked, usually within minutes of the question being posted.
