“This American Life” Tries a Paid iPhone App
Calendar16 Tue, 02 Feb 2010 01:00:20 UTC +00:00
“This American Life,” the well-loved personal narrative public radio show, today released a paid iPhone application for on-demand access to its nearly 15-year-old archive. It’s a good fit; the show’s demographic ostensibly overlaps quite well with iPhone owners, and its podcast often tops the iTunes charts. The price of Ira Glass’ dulcet monotones in your pocket? $2.99. Given its programming is largely paid for by those (everlasting) local fundraising drives, public radio is in a bit of a pickle when it comes to centralized web distribution. TAL, for its part, offers free downloads of its most recent episode for seven days, then charges 99 cents for library downloads via iTunes or offers free streams on its web site. In the past, host Ira Glass has reportedly indicated that the show delivers up to 500,000 episode downloads a week at a cost of more than $100,000. How to address that online audience Read More
NPR debuts official iPhone app
Calendar16 Tue, 18 Aug 2009 15:30:00 UTC +00:00
There are few public radio apps out there, but the official NPR News app [iTunes link] takes some of the best features of these offerings and goes one step beyond. NPR News app was developed by Bottle Rocket Apps, the same folks who brought us Gas Buddy and a number of other well-executed iPhone apps. And, NPR News does not disappoint. When you open the app, you're presented with a layout similar to other news apps. You have top stories, more offerings beyond that, and then a newscast where you can listen to a brief update of the top news of the hour. Along the bottom is a toolbar toggling among news, NPR's programs, a comprehensive listing of NPR stations nationwide with the ability to listen to your station of choice. For that, I tried out WUAL -- broadcast from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama -- my alma mater. Read More
Public Radio app updated and renamed
Calendar16 Thu, 23 Jul 2009 01:00:00 UTC +00:00
The much beloved Public Radio Tuner has been updated, and now sports a new name. Public Radio Player [App Store] is your easy way to get to most of the NPR stations in the country. This new version, which remains free, also allows you to find archived shows, like Car Talk, Speaking of Pets, Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me, Fresh Air, and many others. This allows on-demand service of your favorite Public Radio programs. You also can get a station's current schedule when you start to stream. Some stations don't support it, but if the metadata is there you'll see it in the app. A couple of things to note at this point: Since the app has been renamed it may not appear when you check for updates at the App Store. However, when you run the older Public Radio Tuner, it will advise you of the new app and download Read More
iPhone Public Radio app adds on-demand content
Calendar16 Wed, 22 Jul 2009 16:00:00 UTC +00:00
Listen to your favorite public radio shows on your schedule. Is today my birthday? No? Because I just got one helluva gift: Public Radio Player 2.0, the latest version of the killer radio-streaming app, which now lets you listen to your favorite shows on-demand. Missed last week's "This American Life"? No problem. The app has the latest episode. Want to catch up on "Talk of the Nation Science Friday?" You'll find several weeks' worth of back catalog. Same goes for "Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me," "Fresh Air," "Marketplace," and countless other radio gems. Granted, you can get a lot of the same content in podcast form, but those downloads require precious space on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Here you just tap and listen. As before, Public Radio Player also lets you stream live broadcasts from public radio stations around the country, and it easily zeroes in on local stations if Read More

How One iPhone App Could Save Public Radio
Calendar16 Tue, 21 Jul 2009 04:32:20 UTC +00:00
Some newspapers scrambling to survive the internet condemn websites like Google News and the Huffington Post. Aggregators, they say, need to pay for the right to point to a newspaper's site. Public radio stations, on the other hand, face competition from the internet as well and are just as competitive between themselves as they are collaborative. Somehow, they've responded differently to new media. There may be no better example of that than an iPhone application built by several large public radio organizations and called Public Radio Player. The team behind the app launched a major new release this morning. The application aggregates live streaming and recorded radio broadcasts from across the US, displays their current and planned content schedules and now offers a search function that stretches across all those different types of content: live streams, podcasts and text show descriptions. It's a free app and the organization that makes it Read More

Love it! (... but where are the guides and "on-demand" content?)
Vintage Season 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Overall I am very impressed with this new incarnation of the app, and it easily deserves five stars. I am slightly puzzled about the "'What's Playing Now' program guide for each station" and the "Hundreds of public radio shows on-demand" in the app description, though. If I wish to hear ALL THINGS CONSIDERED on-demand, how would I go about finding it? I was completely unable to locate any particular station "guide," either. Perhaps those features did not make it into this initial release?
excellent app - love the wifi to network hand-off, no drops!
jmsx 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I use this app every single day, often more a couple hours or more during my commute to/from work. With the previous version I would get not infrequent drops of signal, and the problem of leaving a wifi zone to the network. This version seems to have fixed that, smooth sailing through all the trouble spots. Also when a stream does drop off the app reconnects on its own so I don't have to take it out of my pocket. Nice!
Awesome app!
Appalicious 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
The Public Radio Tuner keeps getting better with age! I can't wait to see what's next!
Still not enough stations
tidus27 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
Like I said with the older version, this app doesn't have enough stations for Wisconsin. Otherwise, the stream quality is improved.
Much better
nitayus 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Love the improved stability of the audio streams. Looking forward to the next updates.
Bad bad bad
Holyhandgrenade 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
This is bad because the # of stations is so limited and it does not tell you what kind of station it is. Try Iheart radio
Getting there
Texterinexcelcis 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
Whenever I'm cold and want to heat up my iPhone I use this app. Also if I want to completely re-align my battery's ions this app drains the power in a morning's listening. Don't get me wrong though. Much improved.
More stations
Sailor11 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Please put in 96.1 cat country California
Well done!
Aviator 775 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Major improvement over previous versions! Keep up the good work!
Great
SaaHc2B 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Love it- the auto reconnect is so cool. What's up with the current rating? And I don't get why this isn't just an update to the original app... Oh well, now I have 2!
Much better
toniblank 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Still have all my favorite stations but now the connection is much more stable. Radio K is perfect.
Great app!
czarag00 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Great app for PUBLIC radio! Don't rate something poorly because you don't know what it is.
This is NPR, not a full radio browser
Vanayr 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Stop 1 staring this app. This is not iHeartRadio, it's not a browser for full city markets. This app is so you can browse NPR stations. Nothing more, nothing less. It does exactly what it's supposed to do.
The best public radio app out there!
LiquideFeline 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Keep the airwaves free! Commercial radio is not worth listening to.
Need more stations
shore dog 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
I like 104.1 rock of new Orleans y'all have like no stations come on now
WCQS
William Zane 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This reliably connects me to my favorite radio station, for free. Who could ask for more?
Worse than the original
neptune2000 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
I hoped that this new version would solve the problems of the old one, but instead it is even worse: crashes all the time and worse of all the search for 'local' stations goes into an infinite loop and never returns. I had to terminate the app. I guess you get what you pay for.
THIS IS PUBLIC RADIO ONLY!!!
Thinkb4youwrite 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Hey - all you dopes who can not read: this app is for public radio stations ONLY. If you are looking for your favorite rock or country station FIND ANOTHER APP and stop giving this one star. For the rest of us, this is probably one of the best apps available and it just keeps getting better.
Great!
w0rth 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
If you don't know what NPR stands for, don't download. You'll be disappointed.
My Radio!!!
VerusEx 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Love this app ... Gave my old radio away ... Great reception all of the time and stations I could never get before
Great concept...if it worked
4joe 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
Dropped streams, no podcasts or now playing info. Don't delete your old one like I did.
BEST. MUSIC/NEWS. APP. EVER.

CoatezFam 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app needs waaaaay more radio stations like 107.1 The Peak from white plains NY. I used to listen to that all the time but now I cant
Older Version Better
Len_Smith 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
You'll loose your favorites on this upgrade and I find that I have many more connection failure/time outs with the upgrade than the prior version, regardless if I am on WiFi or 3G.
Glad to have it. Works great.
cosmoknot 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
...
The best public radio app out there!
LiquideFeline 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Keep the airwaves free! Commercial radio is not worth listening to. One way not to get all the confused kids down-rating this app would be to move it to another category (like news!)
I use this every day.
storableprawn 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's nice to hear stations from other cities, especially places I used to live. Podcasts are great, but the live stream offers a lot of programs that iTunes subscription habits would miss, especially some of the great local programs that aren't popular the way TAL or Radiolab are. This application is the one that just opened up the possibilities of this phone for me.
Fun with NPR
Lionsun 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
To be able to listen with my iphone to stations accross the country is plainly speaking terrific. I love listening to and supporting Public Radio.
Fantastic app.
Jamestree 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Much better than before. I enjoy using it on jogs and grocery shopping.
Isn't working
ultomato 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
Aaasaaaaaa, my public radio app doesn't work anymore now that I downloaded the new version !! What did you guys do !!! It says the bandwidth isn't large enough or something. Poo
Perfect for PUBLIC Radio Fans
DantePDX 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app is awesome if you are looking to listen to NPR, PBS, etc... That is all it does, and does it great! Public Radio is listener supported, NOT add supported. If you want your local rock or hip-hop station look elsewhere. This app does not claim to deliver that type of content. NPR Lovers Rejoyce!
Uuugh
crossoverz7 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
I need more stations y100 Miami!!! 97.1 Atlanta!!!
Last version was better
masterofuniverse 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
The last version worked sometimes. This version works rarely. Given the choice I prefer something that works sometimes.
Not an "UPDATE", doesn't work as well
Slarty Bartfast 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
This so-called 'update' actually downloads a different program to your desktop, which uses the same icon, which seems like a poor decision in and of itself. The new program uses (presumably) the same data stream as before (KJZZ in Phoenix)but this app runs it SO poorly that after ten seconds or so an error message pops up referencing bandwidth issues. I'm using iPhone's WiFi with a pair of T1s in a commercial environment, so I can't see how bandwidth could be at issue. All in all, this so-called 'update' runs far worse (for me) than the original app, so just 1 star till they fix these issues.
New version can't play
HurdHouse 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
This is the new version of the public radio app. The key difference between the old and new player seems to be the old one can find and play public radio stations and the new one can not. I have both on my iPhone and I have never gotten the new one to work while the old one works all day long. Same location same radio stations.
New play is NOT ready for prime time!
kwickre 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
Vers. 1.2 is MUCH less stable than 1.1.2 - should not have been rolled out yet, and is *not ready* to use. Many, many frequent drops, lost streams and re-starts. Many plain old error messages. Very distracting and unusable. A further annoyance: it does not overwrite the earlier 1.1.2, so now I have both on my iPhone, but when I try to revert to the earlier rev, I get a constant "upgrade" message and a new level of unusability on that one. (I assume because PRX et al are trying to encourage adoption of 1.2.)
Thanks for fixing the drops!
Robutano 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I love this app because we live in a place with very poor radio reception. We can get clear reception of our favorite stations, and now the streams seem to be stable - we didn't have any drops last night. A great way to listen to KPFA!
KPBS from Sab Diego
San diego local 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
I support public radio with unbias delivery of news and current events.. Is it possible to add KPBS from San Diego onto the app?
Most EXCELLENT
Hookoa 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Gives me my morning fix of NPR programming while I'm showering, shaving, fixing breakfast and out walking the dog! Lets me pick either the local, rural rebroadcast or either Austin or San Antonio stations. PLUS I can actually listen to NPR local station programming from anywhere in the country! Good stuff, Maynard!
So happy to have this app
Becky Badger 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I listen to Public Radio a lot and now I have access to many stations, including the WI HD-2 Classical Station that I've heard about but never been able to hear. The app seems to be working really well for me, especially when I'm using it at my home.It seems to drop stations if I'm out and about due to loss of signal. It's amazing to be able to choose from such a long list of good radio stations. Thank you!
Public Radio
heart and soul 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app has gotten so much better I have to write another review. I slammed it before because it dropped so quickly and so many times it was worthless. It is so improved that I choose it to listen to In the morning rather than my radio. If a call drops (and I can listen the whole morning and it not drop) it picks back up in a few seconds on the same station. Kudos to the people who produce this. This is REAL customer service - a business that listened to what people were saying and did something about it!!!
Works great!
KEXP Listener 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I use it to listen to KEXP Seattle all day while I work... Not having any of the problems that the other reviewers have reported... Using WiFi at home and the office...
Almost unusably slow :(
maq68 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
This latest update added some nice new functionality, but unfortunately the app is now almost unusably slow. Everything from launching to finding stations to switching modes has become really really slow when compared with the previous version. I hope the authors don't intend to optimize the user experience only for 3GS users...
Update makes app slow
Chimpden 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
This was one of my favorite apps. After the update, it takes ages to start up and is laggy throughout. Won't be using it anymore--just too painful.
Updated?
DharmaPup 2.0 stars Version: 2.0
Really like the new features, but now the app is PAINFULLY SLOW! It's hardly worth the upgrade.
Too much, too slow
BenGR4 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I am a certified NPR nut / addict, but this app tries to do and be too much and as a result the app is horribly slow and clunky. Thank you for all of your efforts, but I would have been more than happy with only the live content in exchange for better performance. Plus, I lost all my favorites in the upgrade!!
2.0 = Amazing
MGWeatherman08 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
This new update is truly amazing! The developers of this App really hit it on the nail this time! And to the people who complain about drop streams, that's not always the apps fault. I have never have had a problem with any of the Wisconsin Public Radio Streams but I can never stay connected with some of the non-Chicago Illinois streams. That makes me conclude that it's the stations fault and not the app. If your reading this and are on the fence, DONT BE! Download it now!
Your update is horrible.
SouthernCross20 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
You ruined my favorite app. Please fix.
A vast improvement
embrown 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
I have downloaded this application with each release. I generally liked previous installments of the app, but it always left me wanting more. I am hesitant to call version 2.0 perfect, but it is *much* better than before. Being able to see what program is on the air is the biggest improvement. You can see what show is on a station by browsing the state directory. You can also browse by show. Missed your favorite program? Check out the on-demand menu to access the show's podcast. The current list is small, and not all shows publish a podcast. I imagine this will grow as more feeds are added. It is a nice option, but I will continue to use the iTMS for public radio podcast downloads. I can't speak for connection issues, but for all who complain, I don't think you can expect to have your device keep a continuous stream for hours on end. I usually listen to radio on my iPhone using a WiFi connection and experience the occasional drop, regardless of the application. What can I say? It happens. A big thumbs up to the developers at PRX for sticking with it and continuing to improve. I'm pleased with this version and already looking forward to what you guys may have to offer in a future release.
Unusable
Targuman 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
2.0 crashes on start and is unusable. Too bad because this was a favorite app and I was looking forward to the new features.
This APP is CRAPP!
Texas415 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
The crashing is almost endless I mean it's free for a reason.
Do Not Upgrade! Wait for the next version if you want these features. They are not ready yet.
Frustrated Subscriber 1.0 stars Version: 2.0
I used the earlier version of this application every day to listen to four different station streams. It started instantly and worked every time. I regret upgrading as it lost my favorites and the slow performance has made it unusable.
Acceptable
Zews 01 3.0 stars Version: 2.0
I just updated, and all the screen said was "Loading (in puke green) Please wait". I waited 20 minutes, before giving up.
A must for NPR fans
SeANMcBAY 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
This app is tops when it comes to listening to public radio streams such as NPR.
Amazing!
honuificus 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
Has fixed all the bugs and the interface and search features are amazing! Will eliminate the need for all NPR podcasting in the future! Way to go!
Wow
JReviewer21 5.0 stars Version: 2.0
Wow. Almost all the reviews about this product are just flat out wrong. This software does what it claims very well. Why so many people are rating it poorly I have no idea. The new interface and feature set is very well done. It is free, so ignore the haters and try it yourself.
Great App after rebooting.
rkutz 4.0 stars Version: 2.0
All kinds of problems until you reboot your phone, slow, on demand doesn't play, etc. After that, it works perfectly. Great feature set to see what is playing live on local and national NPR stations and to locate and listen to all national and local public radio podcasts. Highly recommended, but remember, if you have problems, reboot your phone.
So much better (2.0.1)
Lunas 4.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Now that 2.0.1 has fixed the fatal bugs (which are responsible for all those low ratings), this re-worked NPR tuner is THE best way to get your public radio fix. It integrates both live feeds of most NPR stations, plus with Podcasts (like NPR Addict), and the audio quality is crisper than on my car's actual radio. Very pleased.
GREAT App!
curtinji 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This is one of my favorite and most used apps. It's perfect for my long trips across midwest highways, where I can just listen to one station, rather than searching around the dial once one station starts to get fuzzy. It's also wonderful for when I go to the park and want to listen to classical music, but don't have a handheld radio. I haven't experienced any problems with crashes or bad sound quality, and the on-demand section as well as the featured sections make it easy to find new things. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves public radio!
2.0.1 amazing
Cerpint 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
The update fixed all my complaints. This is offically the public radio fan's dream app.
