"I've kind of been the driving force behind this." Chris Ewington describes what board games mean to him in passionate bursts. "It's who I am. It's what I do. It's what I was meant to do." Chris is the head honcho at Codito Development, an outfit that specializes in securing licensing and then reproducing tabletop games on iPad under the banner of Sage Games. Chris' experience with porting the tabletop experience stretches long before iPad came into our lives. He used to make "homegrown" computer versions of his favorites to share with friends and family. In a lot of ways, he's the perfect guy to be doing this. His studio has the talent, and he has an astounding amount of reverence for the art form and what it does differently in today's modern gaming landscape, which is dominated by stupid games like Angry Birds. 3 great new iPhone and iPad games available now
Calendar16 Fri, 05 Aug 2011 11:00:04 UTC +00:00
The iPhone and iPad are swimming in awesome game releases lately. Three titles worthy of special attention arrived on Apple’s mobile devices Thursday, with a little something for everyone, from casual gamers right up to those looking for a fairly rich role-playing game experience. One of the few casual titles that’s been able to challenge Angry Birds‘ App Store rule is Cut the Rope by ZeptoLab. The physics puzzler has a simple goal: cut ropes to help lead a piece of candy from one part of the screen to another, where the adorable lizard creature Om Nom waits to eat it. Experiments is the sequel to the original Cut the Rope, and introduces 75 new levels, with more promised as updates down the road. The new game also packs a bunch of new objects that should add new dimensions of challenge to the task of feeding Om Nom. But if you’re Read More

Puerto Rico is the best board game ever.
Casey Evans 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've only played a couple games against the AI so far, and they are a challenge even though I have played this game many times before. But what I really look forward to is playing live online games when more have downloaded and experienced this game. If you love board games where luck, chance and randomness are almost non-existent, then look no further and download this game now... you won't regret it.

A very good implementation of the original board game featuring a narrative to guide game play and the inclusion of the Alea 2-player variant. The historical notes for each character selection add nicely to the theme. Well done!
Well Done!

Excellent translation to the iPad. It was a long time coming but worth the wait. Great graphic interface with a classic board game.
Great gameplay / Awful presentation
Simbolic 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
As a fan of the board game, I was eagerly awaiting this release. While the gameplay is technically solid, the UI is absolutely awful. This looks like a game from the mid-90s. The colors are way over-saturated, the layout does not make good use of the space and the fonts are reminiscent of Papyrus on Windows 95. Thin black text over dark brown illustrations (for role selection) is just poor design. Codito must love those "grungy" rounded rectangles, too, as they are repeats of the same ones they used on Tikal. I expected a LOT more given the prestige of the Puerto Rico brand and the hefty price tag. Advice to Ravensbuger & Codito: keep your quality programmers and license deal-makers, but hire some better interface designers! Take a cue from Days of Wonder ... they really know how to design a quality port of their analog games to this platform.
Awesome
Mary T. Todd 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Near perfect in every detail! I find it hard to believe people can criticize this on such trivial grounds. Kudos to all involved for bringing a true classic to the masses. Love it!
Great version of a classic
badlogik 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Puerto Rico is a classic Euopean strategy board game and Cordito and Ravensburger have brought us a polished version in app form. In the game, players select roles that allow all players to perform specific tasks with the simple goal in mind to gain the most points. However, in order to do so, they will need to create an economy and have their workers produce goods. It is a simple concept that works very well in board game form. It is a bit more complex than some other board games on the app store and a long way from Monopoly but very good. As for the app, Andreas Seyfarth's game has been done justice. Some diehards might prefer the board game's look, but I am very pleased with the graphical overhaul from the purple squares of times past to nice looking buildings and their subtle animations. The music and sound are solid and you can even play your own tracks.Since this game is one of the more expensive games that you will run across, I must point out problem areas. The cutscenes are an intetesting idea and very well done, but are very quickly distracting. I turned them off after seeing just a few. The lack of acheivements and asynchronous play are also curious, but I fully expect to see them soon. In the end, Puerto Rico is easily one of the strongest board game apps that you will currently find for your iPad and I highly recommend it. If you are looking for something with a bit more depth than other classics such as Carcassonne, you can't go wrong with Puerto Rico.
Outstanding
TDFReview 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Puerto Rico is one of the top "Euro games" of all times. This is an outstanding rendition. If you're new to this game, don't get overwhelmed. It's a great game; take your time to learn it. You won't be sorry.
Excellent!!

Great translation of a great game!
A great iPad adaptation of the best board game I've ever played.
Marco Arment 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a big fan of the board game, and they did a great job porting it. This is a solid adaptation, with good AI and fun in-person multiplayer.Recommended.
Looks like a '90s PC game
Craig Patchett 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
As a game, Puerto Rico is a lot of fun and has a huge following, so I expect this iPad version will get a lot of five-star ratings by default from fans of the board game. But if we're being honest, the iPad implementation looks like something you'd expect to find running on Windows 95, from the 8-bit dithered opening screen on. (Ironically, the PC version of the game looks better.) The graphics and interface are amateurish at best and in many cases actually make the game difficult to play. The company needs to hire a good graphic designer and a UI expert and completely redo the entire look and feel of the game.Take a look at Ticket to Ride for an example of an iPad board game implementation done right.
