Eleven ways to stifle boredom in the iPad line
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Apr 2010 20:30:00 UTC +00:00
One of most excruciatingly boring experiences of my life was waiting in line on June 29, 2007 for my first-generation iPhone. The day was clear and hot, and although I had my laptop with me, it quickly ran out of juice as we waited for the official opening of the store for iPhone sales at 5 PM. Some people appear to have infinite patience, but TUAW reader Cody is like me -- he gets bored easily. In an email, Cody said "I will be standing in the Best Buy line for well over 5 hours. Do you have any suggestions on ways to help time go by? I think it would be helpful if you compiled a list and posted it on TUAW!" Well, we're at your service, Cody! And hopefully, these ideas will keep hundreds of thousands of iPad owners-to-be from suffering from terminal boredom in the early morning hours Read More

December 30th, 2009 James Isabel Tired of iVideoCamera because it only video records 3FPS for older iPhones? Try out the just released Qik VideoCamera ($0.99) which promises 7FPS and a better resolution for video recording on iPhone 1G and 3G! The resolution is also much improved: 352×288 compared to iVideoCamera’s 160×213. Though this one’s a step up, the resolution still doesn’t go near the iPhone 3GS’ 480×320. On other related news, a fully functional live streaming over 3G, EDGE or WiFi Qik Live has also been approved for FREE! Remember Qik has released an iPhone 3GS only app named which does upload videos and “live streams” at some seconds delayed. Now that Apple has finally let these apps in, how long til a full resolution app comes along and at what price will you get one? A better question would be: what else is Apple willing to approve these days? You Read More

Nobody was waiting longer for the change than mobile video startup Qik, which tonight is further building out its collection of iPhone apps with the launch of the Qik VideoCamera. The new app allows the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G to locally capture video — something that only the 3GS has been able to do until recently. Qik has, of course, made its name building live streaming apps that allow users to broadcast their video Read More

The company submitted the app a couple weeks ago following the approval of Ustream’s live streaming application, and as expected, Apple also had no problem with it now. This marks a change from Apple, which previously was blocking all apps that did live video (recording) streaming. Apparently, the way these streaming apps work is using a restricted API (a screen capture API) to get around the Read More
We were all a bit surprised when Ustream's free Live Broadcasting iPhone app [iTunes Link] was approved by Apple and tossed into the App Store yesterday. After all, it wasn't that long ago that it seemed that no streaming video apps would ever be approved for the iPhone platform due to AT&T's reluctance to have their network overwhelmed by self-produced live vidcasts of emo guitar players "broadcasting" from their unheated rent-controlled flats. No sooner had the Ustream app magically appeared than we began to receive emails from Qik stating that they were submitting their streaming video app for approval. Qik currently has Qik for 3GS [Free, iTunes Link] in the app store, which allows recording and eventual uploading of video to their site, but not live video streaming. According to a blog post on the Qik site, the app has been resubmitted and the wait is on. Having a choice of Read More

Michael (Admin) | Sep 11, 2009 User rating: (No Ratings Yet)  Loading ... Normally this bunch of apps is untested free stuff, but I’ve actually tried a couple in this round! I have three fantasy football leagues on Yahoo (I know, you’re sick of hearing about them) so that one’s a must-have, and I tried out JellyCar back when it was in the Top 25 Free list. I haven’t had much time yet to play with Yahoo’s app, but JellyCar is definitely worth trying. JellyCar by Walaber: This one used to be in the Top 25, but it’s still free! Albuquerque TV Reporter Jeremy Jojola recently used a jailbroken iPhone and Qik [iTunes link] to broadcast a story live for KOB-TV. It's a far cry from the big trucks with microwave antennas and satellite dishes that are usually seen where news stories are broadcast. The audio and video quality isn't perfect, but it shows how fast the technology is moving. Jeremy told me he used the AT&T 3G network for the connection. We've already reported on the Qik app which was recently updated to allow uploading of video using the 3G network, but so far, the live capability has been nixed by Apple/AT&T. The only way to get the full benefit of live streaming is by jailbreaking the iPhone. Qik runs on a huge variety of other smartphones with full live capability, even on the AT&T network. If you'd like to see Jeremy's story, it's available by clicking the Read More Read More
Qik for iPhone 3GS removes ‘WiFi only’ restriction
Calendar16 Mon, 24 Aug 2009 16:00:02 UTC +00:00
Aug 24 iPhone News   8:00 am      (0) Comments Qik for iPhone 3GS [iTunes link] gets update: Wi-Fi-only restriction has been removed. It means you can now upload your iPhone videos to the internet over a 3G network. “We just tried it ourselves and, sure enough, it works like a charm,” Engadget writes. Last week, Qik announced that their iPhone 3GS app can be downloaded for free directly from the App Store. They also claim that Qik is the first mobile video app to let you frame your videos either horizontally or vertically. Basically, Qik enables live video casting over any cell network or wifi connection and archive it via Qik.com.  There is no streaming ability for the iPhone version –you know why. No comments yet. Qik iPhone app updated with 3G uploading
Calendar16 Mon, 24 Aug 2009 01:21:32 UTC +00:00
It might not be the same as live-streaming your video to Qik, but it’s pretty awesome news that Qik’s latest iPhone app-update now enables iPhone users to upload their videos over AT&T’s 3G network. Qik was recently launched with a restriction that only allowed users to upload pre-recorded videos over WiFi networks. That restriction is no more. Still, that jailbroken version of Qik sounds like a better option to us. Qik (iTunes link) Will hails from The City of Angels - Los Angeles, California. He spends his time playing with his numerous gadgets and looking forward to seeing what future holds for mobile technology. An avid promoter of a fully "digital" life, he promotes the widespread adoption of truly mobile, paper-less living. He dreams of the day when he can go completely digital. Qik Updated, Loses Wi-Fi Only Restriction
Calendar16 Sat, 22 Aug 2009 13:26:37 UTC +00:00
Qik for the iPhone 3GS allows you to record and share video with your friends via a variety of services, but upon its  initial release, the official App Store version of the app lacked the ability to stream live video and upload videos over 3G, something its jailbreak counterpart is able to do.  That’s not true anymore, at least not completely since Qik received a small update yesterday evening that removes the Wi-Fi video uploading restriction, which means you can now upload videos over 3G.  Now if only we could get the FCC to put a little more pressure on Apple and AT&T, maybe then we would be allowed to stream live video as well? Qik is an easy-to-use app that allows you to instantly capture and share your moments in a variety of ways.  You can record video on your iPhone 3GS and then upload via Wi-Fi to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Read More

Qik for iPhone updated, now uploads video over 3G
Calendar16 Sat, 22 Aug 2009 02:30:00 UTC +00:00
Hmmmm. Seems that FCC pressure might be doing wonders for those App Store approvals. Qik, which we reviewed earlier this month, had been pretty well kneecapped by either AT&T or Apple; choose your villain. But lo and behold, today Qik [iTunes link] was updated so now it can upload video over the 3G network, not just WiFi as was the case in the first release of the app. I just tried it and it worked fine, happily uploading a video with no WiFi in sight. That realy improves Qik, but on every other smartphone Qik allows live streaming. Only the best and most powerful smartphone in the world has the no live restriction. Coincidence or conspiracy? I downloaded the update, and yes, it works over 3G now. It's clear that something is causing Apple/AT&T to loosen up a bit. May that continue. Kinda hard to argue that Sling Mobile can't work Read More

Qik for iPhone 3GS now available on the App Store!
Calendar16 Mon, 17 Aug 2009 15:37:40 UTC +00:00
Aug 17 iPhone News   7:37 am      (0) Comments Qik for the iPhone 3GS [iTunes link] can now be downloaded for free directly from the App Store. Do you have Qik on your iPhone already? Please note that that this version is a bit different. First, this version of Qik allows you to pull videos right from your iPhone 3GS Camera Roll and upload them to your Qik account. So if you’ve recorded videos with the iPhone 3GS native camera, you can share those via Qik, too. Qik is the only iPhone 3GS app to let you share videos from your camera roll straight to your blog, website, Facebook, YouTube, and all the other networks Qik integrates with. Once you’ve stopped recording, your video upload begins automatically – without the hassle of pushing any more buttons or filling out any form fields. Qik is the first mobile video app to let Read More
Qik [iTunes link] is an eagerly awaited free app for the iPhone. Most other video capable phones have a version of it. Qik allows, among other things, live streaming from your phone to the web. How could someone not want that capability? Early on, Qik offered a version for jailbroken phones that worked quite well. Well of course, we've learned that what can run on other smartphones may not necessarily make it to the iPhone, and predictably the App Store version has been crippled. You can record video, upload video (Wi-Fi only) but no streaming or uploading over the 3G network. In fact, you can't even live stream over WiFi. I'm sure doing all this this violates the hastily revised terms of service from AT&T. It still grates that the phone that is helping to save AT&T financially has its users abused by having lesser services than other phones that are Read More
Weekly App Store Picks: Aug. 15, 2009
Calendar16 Sat, 15 Aug 2009 16:00:55 UTC +00:00
It’s time to take a look at my recommendations for iPhone, hand-picked from the week’s App Store releases. This week I’ve been looking at Mujik, Whiteboarder, Qik and Civilization Revolution. (Free) There’s a special screen on my iPhone dedicated just to sound toys and music apps. Top of the list is FourTrack, which recreates the classic analog four track recorder on the iPhone, complete with metronome and bounce downs — it really is an essential tool for music makers. In the sound toys section, I have RjDj and Bloom, and now Mujik, a brand new electronica toy from App Store newcomers Lucky Frame. The app does away with traditional tech-infused electronica interfaces, instead offering up tilt-activated hot air balloons and a shelf of dusty old books filled with musical bugs. Despite the fact that the interface does away with a traditional feature-laden sequencer interface, there’s a surprising amount of depth and Read More

I've been waiting for this from a long time, good work guys, thanx a lot I know the wifi thing is due to the restriction from Apple so I will not blame you :)

i can't wait until att/apple allows live streaming video. its gonna change the world.
Finally in the App Store
DGStinner 4.0 stars Version: 3.52
I loved this app on my jailbroken iPhone 3G. I'm happy to see it come to the App Store and the 3GS. It's a shame it only uploads on wifi but that's AT&T's fault. At least the app is available. I would give this 5 stars except for upload over wifi only, which I know is because of AT&T.
You can't publish LIVE recordings ;(
Vinod Tonangi 3.0 stars Version: 3.52
I'm sure this is not a Qik limitation but you can't publish live videos yet. All you can do is publish previously recorded videos to Twitter, Qik.com, & Facebook. I'm still waiting for the live video version. C'mon apple let it pass through the app store - I can suffer with it on wi-fi only for now but you gotta give me a reason NOT to jailbreak my iPhone!
crap- dont waste time. read this.
geocastaneda 1.0 stars Version: 3.52
does not work on wifi. does not stream video. not any better than twitvid for uploading videos and sharing. not what qik for cydia was!

This version does not seem to enable Live Streaming.
Boo!
€hR!$ 5.0 stars Version: 3.52
Apple needs to add the freaking streaming API already. The 3GS can record video. Why not let us stream the video live? Until then, I'll keep using Qik from Cydia.
Qik rocks!
Therabhai 5.0 stars Version: 3.52
OMG Qik is the best app ever! U gotta download it. I'll never use the iPhone video recorder again without it. U can integrate your old photos and videos and share them directly to Twitter and facebook with one click. This is the best app ever!
Not a fan

This app is poorly written- freezes my iPhone Qik fail.
Doesn't allow a live video feed like it use to do
Bradlpat 1.0 stars Version: 3.52
This program use to allow a live video feed to the qik website but there was a 10 second delay. Now it looks like it doesn't anymore, which gave the program the cool factor. Plus it looks like it has been crippled to only wifi. Thanks apple and at&t for shitting all over an other good app. You guys are the best!
I'm happy, but...
[TheBORG] 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
I'm happy you made it to the App Store, but the app i missing features that the jailbroken version had or I missed them in this version: (1) Streaming over 3G (I heard that an update was coming for this) (2) Sending a tweet to my Twitter account for people to watch the stream (3) Ability to name & describe the video before it was being uploaded.
A huge caveat
vdegeorge 3.0 stars Version: 3.52
One of my favorite apps on a jailbroken phone... But crippled here. You can stream live. A good app to be sure, but lacking the number one feature, not great. Hopefully we'll see this opened up, but it's doubtful.
Nice port!
Kraig R 5.0 stars Version: 3.52
First! And it's great to see jailbreak apps coming into the app store!
Awesome!

Nice but....
bodagetta 3.0 stars Version: 3.52
Nice interface, but it does not seem to be able to stream live video like the other versions of qik. It just records and then uploads the clip.. which the iPhone can already do.

Por fin está en el AppStore.. Está espectacular por suversatilidadrespecto a los servicios a los que se pueden subir videos!
Come on Apple this is pitifull!
Lenism 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
Qik via Cydia is a killer app, Qik via the App Store stinks! I hear 3g uploading is coming, but what about real time streaming, that is Qik bread and butter??? Way to go Apple, dumb down a terrific app : (
Live Streaming???

Won't be too hard on this and will give the remaining 2 Stars when this becomes the "qik" we have all come to know and love. Let's just say that this is a START and we have our Foot in the Door. Now we just got to get the rest of the stuff inside. Namely LIVE-STREAMING and 3G. Always try to find the POSITIVE. WE IN THE DOOR!!!

I've used the jail break version and now this. Deleted. It shares a name but is nothing like the original
qik very nice app BUT
VinnyJr 2.0 stars Version: 3.98
I am very impressed with this application version (0.3.98). I took some videos today using my iPhone 3GS and the qik app outsde at the Bolton senior center. I then went inside and was able to find and show the videos using one of the Senior Center computers. BUT I found a probem when I got home. The qik app does NOT yet provide a way to delete a qik video files from your iPhone. I will not use this app until the iPhone file delete feature is added. For you programmers out there this is like a program that has a memory leak. It can use up your memory and you can not fix it.
Sorry
Higa27 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
I apologize for giving this app only "two" stars but it is such a downgrade to the "other" version you have out there if you know what I mean. I could live with the fact that this app did not do "live streaming" cause it's probably against Apple's restrictions but uploading didn't even work. Seriously, it's less of a pain to use the default recording app and upload to you tube or use twitvid to upload to twitter. This was one of my most anticipated apps for to the app store but I'm not sure if it's worth putting it on the app store if the restrictions cripple what is such a great app on the "other side."
Great for posting video
donlphi 5.0 stars Version: 3.52
I love being able to share my videos on Facebook with ease and keep other videos private. I prefer the jailbroken version, but this is still nice, since it's free.
BUMMER:(
Smcnally75 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
I wad SOOO excited when I saw this in the App Store, yet SOOO disappointed when I saw how crippled it is. I lkie Apple but they need to knock off the BS.
I wanna jailbreak
dmksaved 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
Why does the jailbreak version work better then this version ? The iphone 3G can record video jailbroken .. But apple wants me to pay for an iPhone 3GS to get video recording and this app . that's lame this is why I did not upgrade my iPhone 3G. lame
So far...
xLiL SM0K3x 5.0 stars Version: 3.52
I'm just stoked to see it hit the App Store finally! And if corse all those noobz won't know that live streaming is prohibited from Apple, but Qik will hopefully be able to get it working. Love the app, only request is it needs 3G or Edge uploading. But love it. Keep up the updates!
No Live Streaming Makes it NOT Qik!
digiprod 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
Thanks AT&T, you have struck again neutering another useful app. AT&T gives me NEW reasons to jailbreak my iPhone everyday! I feel bad razing this app as I know it was NOT there fault for the features it lacks, BUT don't waste your time.
Why do you want my mobile number?
AlexVannini 1.0 stars Version: 3.52
I don't understand why the app wants to record my mobile number. Please explain. Until then, I'll not register.
Attn: Apple/AT&T
shawncpotter 4.0 stars Version: 4.10
Apple and AT&T need to STOP crippling apps like Qik. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that this app should not have all the abilities that every other smartphone have: live video. Enough is enough!
No live streaming only WiFi, What?
bminority 2.0 stars Version: 3.52
This has to be the worst video uploading option yet. You have to have wifi and it's not streaming. You record and then upload. Which is not the true nature of qik. Sadly AT&T and Apple has ruined another great app for the iPhone.
Useless on iPhone 3G!
adruzh 1.0 stars Version: 4.10
This app is absolutely useless on iPhone 3G!
If you know what Qik "should" be, this is a waste
Br0k3n4U 1.0 stars Version: 4.10
Don't waste your time.
AWESOME APP!!!
Borispig 5.0 stars Version: 4.10
I have heard good and bad things about this app, first I tried the App Store version and I thought all the bad things were true, but then I tried the Cydia version and now I know all the good things are totaly true, Qik guys you rock!!!... All the bad comments and reviews would be to Apple and AT&T
Okay dummies, here we go.
thesykboy 5.0 stars Version: 4.10
I've had Qik since last year with my 3G that was jailbroken. I was pissed when I couldn't jb my new 3GS and get it but was elated to see it in the app store. Okay now, for all you folks shitting on this app because you can't edit or do this or that, blame Apple. People jailbreak to get the apps that Apple says no to but are still great apps! Qik is simple. Wanna show people what you're doing? Use Qik. Wanna upload it to various social networking sites? Qik can do that. The jb version is a little more beefy than the app store version, but if you want the real version, learn about jailbreaking. Don't have a camera on your 3G, but really want one? Jailbreak and get Qik from Cydia. At that rate, get Cycorder too. This app is simple and does what it's supposed to do. It takes video and uploads it. The fact that you can now CHOOSE where you want it to go is a marvelous plus! With all that said, Qik is a great app. The people complaining would do so regardless. Enjoy this app, it's one of my favorites.
I really didn't like this
JustMathYou 3.0 stars Version: 4.10
I had to Jailbreak my phone again
Qik only for 3GS? BS !
SickofthisCrap 5.0 stars Version: 4.10
I had my 3G phone jailbroken and had this app downloaded from Cydia and it worked perfectly. And then I updated the phones OS and then downloaded it from here, tried to use it and it tells me video is only supported on the 3GS! Such Crap!!! Apple is becoming more disappointing every day. A free app and they wanna force you into buying a 3GS. Jailbreak People!!!
Why no livestreaming?!?
booo qik 3.0 stars Version: 4.10
This was very disappointing - I shouldn't have to jailbreak my phone to get full use of this app. Misleading. Wish that AT&T and Apple would get their act together to enable apps like this.
