Calendar16 Thu, 26 Jan 2012 16:18:26 UTC +00:00
Surprise! RAGE HD [$1.99], id Software's graphically off-the-walls tie-in shooter to RAGE, has been updated with two additional levels in a brand new update that also throws in higher resolution models, video output support, and various other enhancements and bug fixes. The house cleaning additions are free as always, but these levels, Kraken and Aqueduct, come at a cost: $.99, to be exact, via in-app purchase through the in-game Store. We've spent a few minutes with each and can happily report that they are, indeed, levels that have been added to RAGE HD. One thing we didn't expect, though, is to be floored all over again by this game's look. Goodness, it's gorgeous. Calendar16 Mon, 31 Oct 2011 20:37:35 UTC +00:00
It's Halloween night, and while you're sitting on the couch waiting for trick-or-treaters to show, why not curl up with one of these terrifying iOS games? A lot of games feature friendly monsters and zombies, but we've picked our favorite creepy, dark, and freaky iPhone and iPad games to make your evening a little scarier. 10. Contract Killer: Zombies Glu's latest freemium first-person sniper game has a few notable improvements over Contract Killer. For one, you're sniping undead zombies instead of mafioso, and two, the gore factor is upped in a big way. Some missions even have you defending a human ally while they're surrounded by zombies-- a scary position to be in. Our Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a bloody shooter with busty undead blondes and shotgun fun, how can you say no? 9. 9mm Review

Posted 08/24/2011 at 9:40am | by Steve Haske “It’s raining bacon, motherf—kers!”The appropriately named John Kannon yells this to no one in particular in the first level of 9mm, since the hoods he’s targeting are huddled idiotically in a room below the skylight the badass cop is about to crash through. Then, cue the slow motion gunplay and predictable South Central-ish gangland soundtrack -- while you’re taking out these worthless thugs with extreme prejudice, you may think to yourself, “Gee, I feel like I’ve played this game before.” You’re probably not wrong, though it may be easy to get sucked into 9mm’s hype. With Gameloft’s name and production values backing it (not to mention the fairly meaty $6.99 price tag) the game certainly purports itself as an action game tour-de-force for iOS. Don’t give its shiny exterior too much credit though -- this is just another bland shooter, and one with Read More

RAGE and RAGE HD for iOS now free for a week
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Aug 2011 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
As a result of receiving over 100,000 Facebook "likes," iD Software is giving away its first-person iOS shooters RAGE and RAGE HD for free until next Wednesday, August 24. Both games are universal apps with RAGE HD offering enhanced graphics for Retina displays and the iPad. The games have you role-play as a contestant on a post-apocolpytic TV game show whose goal is to waste angry mutants. RAGE is fun, though unfortunately "on rails," meaning you can't wander around and explore the 3D environments freely. Instead, the games dictate your movements through the levels. But hey, you can't argue with free, right? Click the links above to grab the games from the App Store now. But be warned, they'll take up a fair amount of space. RAGE is a 540 MB download, while RAGE HD clocks in at 747 MB. Read More
We’ve covered id Software’s RAGE in the past, even going as far as reviewing it and singing the game’s praises anywhere we go. There isn’t a better FPS experience on the iOS platform than RAGE and we are extremely happy to report id Software has made the game completely free to download for the next week. If that last paragraph didn’t get you to click the link below to download the game, then we might as well entertain you a little bit longer by informing you why exactly the game has been made free for a week. id Software was running a campaign for the game through its Facebook page. When the page reached 100,000 “Likes,” that’s when the floodgates would open and a free copy of RAGE would be made available for all to download. Still reading? Boy, you sure don’t know when to give up on a story and hit Read More

A couple of weeks ago, we highlighted a new update for id Software’s Rage [Free] and Rage HD [Free] that added several welcome new features, like a melee move, a virtual analog stick, and HDMI TV-Out support. We also mentioned that id was running a campaign on their Facebook page that if they received 100,000 “Likes” then both versions of the Rage game would go free for a week. Today, they finally hit that mark, which is amazing to me considering that I can count the number of people that like me on one hand. As promised, both Rage and Rage HD have dropped to free for the next week. If you haven’t yet picked up the game, then now is your chance to grab it gratis. Assuming you have the nearly 800 mb of free space that the HD version takes up, of course. Also, be sure to check out Read More
John Carmack Takes The Stage At QuakeCon 2011
Calendar16 Mon, 08 Aug 2011 00:30:18 UTC +00:00
QuakeCon 2011 doesn’t have a whole lot in store for id Software’s mobile fans. The studio's focus is squarely sitting on the promotion of , which is hitting this fall. Even in past years the show has been more about the ‘big’ titles as opposed to the ‘small’ mobiles ones, but we thought you should check out the opening keynote from designer John Carmack anyway, which has been graciously uploaded to YouTube. Carmack speaks with a totally unique voice. Not only is the dude brilliant and articulate, he’s a visionary in the games design and technology field. What he says matters and what he does has mattered to mobile audiences in the past; we wouldn’t have, say, [$1.99] or [$1.99], if there wasn’t a John Carmack. We also wouldn’t even know what DOOM was if not for him and his team of pioneers. Anyway, here's the video: The keynote is over Read More
'RAGE HD' Gets An Optimization Update, Might Go Free
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Aug 2011 23:10:20 UTC +00:00
It’s a good day whenever we can write about id Software twice. In addition to letting loose a cool little update to DOOM Classic, the developer’s mobile branch also dropped a great update to its much more recent first-person shooter, [$1.99]. Version 1.21 has been “optimized” for the iPad 2 (we lack specifics on what that entails) and allows for HDMI TV output. Even better, the update packs in a melee mechanic that triggers whenever you push your handheld forward, a new analog stick control option, and addresses some obscure Game Center crash bugs. If you don't have RAGE but wouldn't mind grabbing it and its update for the price $0, publisher Bethesda has just the solution for you: an online petition (of sorts). When the franchise's Facebook page hits 100,000 "Likes," all variants of the game will go free for an entire week. You can shoot over there right now Read More

It powers the gorgeous games on the platform, like Rage and Infinity Blade. Gameloft announced that they would be incorporating the engine into their future games way back in February, and now it seems that at least one of those games is playable enough to be demoed in front of the masses. They sent out this tweet, stating that they’ll be showing off the game (titled “March of Heroes”) at E3: You dreamt it, it became real. Found Footage: Rage for iOS running in WebGL
Calendar16 Wed, 18 May 2011 05:00:00 UTC +00:00
The video on the next page shows a pretty mean feat of coding. Developer Brandon Jones has taken files from the iOS version of id's Rage game, which came out for iOS a little while ago, and tweaked them to display in WebGL, a library for JavaScript that can generate 3D graphics in a compatible web browser. In other words, Jones ported (some elements of) Rage for iOS to the browser. He even had John Carmack's help, getting a few hints on exactly how the file format worked and how to get it together. Understandably, Carmack also asked him not to post the art files on a public web server, so while the source code is available for developers, the demo isn't actually live for players to try out. Jones has a much longer post about the actual tech behind the demo, though it may cross your eyes if you're not Read More

iPad 2: Taking Advantage of the Gyroscope
Calendar16 Tue, 22 Mar 2011 03:40:32 UTC +00:00
posted by D. St. Charles on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 8:40 pm.   Much ado was made about the addition of a gyroscope at the Apple keynote release of the iPad 2. Apple asserts that the integration of the gyroscope, compass and accelerometer will improve games, maps and other apps significantly. The demonstration app Gyroblox ($2.99, available for the iPhone 4) was used to demonstrate the new hardware. Users who have downloaded the “game” have been disappointed. To better experience the potential power of the gyroscope, gamers may be more interested the suggestions of MacLife, which lists seven games which better take advantage of the hardware new to the iPad 2. However, some of the iPad versions of the games have yet to be updated for the gyroscope. The list includes Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD ($6.99), Jenga HD ($.99), Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus ($6.99, iPod Touch/iPhone 4 version), N.O.V.A. 2 ($6.99 – again Read More
Favorite 4: iOS Gaming on Your TV

By Carter Dotson on February 2nd, 2011 The VGA cable for 4th generation iOS devices can be used for more than just displaying videos and other assorted documents, as this Favorite 4 details those fine games that show off iOS gaming on the big screen. The iPad may have a big and beautiful screen, but sometimes, you want to play those games on an even bigger screen, like your TV. Thankfully, there are a selection of iOS games that allow you to hook up your iPad and/or iPhone/iPod touch to the TV using the VGA adapter, and sit back and enjoy games on your monitor or HDTV. : Consoles and PCs won’t be getting the id Tech 5 engine and the full Rage game until the end of this year at least, but you can play the first fruits of the id Tech 5 engine on your monitor TV through Rage Read More

Fling adds a joystick to your iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 04 Jan 2011 16:30:00 UTC +00:00
The Fling tactile game controller is a real joystick that attaches to your iPad so you can instinctively feel what you're doing with your thumb and increase your accuracy. Xbox and PlayStation controllers taught console gamers to use a left thumb joystick for movement or aiming. Action games on the iPad simulate that with a virtual joystick controlled with your thumb on the touch screen. Problem is, there's no touch feedback from the iPad's flat glass screen. It's hard to keep track of exactly where your thumb is, making games like GWars:Touch or Rage HD harder than they need to be. Fling is a physical joystick giving you real feedback. Use the suction cups to position it properly centered for the game, then use your thumb on the thumbstick to control the game. The joystick is made by Ten One Design who came up with the Pogo Sketch stylus for iPad, Read More

A new update for id Software’s RAGE HD has hit the App Store over the weekend and it brings some awesome improvements to an already impressive game. One of the things we felt that were missing from RAGE HD was Game Center support. In our review, we not only wanted achievements and leader boards, but also some multiplayer support. Although there isn’t multiplayer in this update, there’re achievements and leaderboards that keeps track of how many mutants you’ve killed. Unfortunately, this update doesn’t count all of the hundreds of thousands mutants you killed previously, so you’ll need to go on a murderous rampage all over again. This update also brings support for the ‘s gyroscope which allows you to play the game as if it’s a small virtual window to which you can move your iPhone around and experience RAGE HD in a completely new way. 'RAGE' and 'RAGE HD' 1.1 Updates Submitted Today

We just got word from John Carmack himself on what's in store for us with the upcoming 1.1 update of RAGE [99¢ / HD], and wow, we're in for a treat. Full Game Center support is coming, specifically, 58 achievements and 13 different online leaderboards. Gyroscope controls have been added for devices that are equipped with gyroscopes, and directional damage indication has been implemented so you can see what side you're being attacked on. There's also a whole host of bug fixes and tweaks such as changing the location of the pause button to prevent hitting it accidentally. It gets better though. Two new game modes have been implemented. A mirror mode, which flips the levels for a slight variation in gameplay and a "museum mode" has been added which strips all objects and creatures while allowing the player to look through each level, pausing when they see fit to look Read More
A call for more storage in iOS devices
Calendar16 Wed, 15 Dec 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Back in the olden days, when I bought my first Disk ][ to hang onto my Apple ][ Plus, I was amazed at how much the 140KB floppy drive could store. After using it for a while, I was sure that it was big enough to hold every program I'd ever buy, and most of the programs my kids would need as well. Nowadays, of course, I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS and a 64GB iPad, and I'm out of room. The release of Riven brought into focus just how crazy this all is. Riven weighs in at 1.01GB and requires you to have 2GB of free storage just to install it. I don't blame the game itself -- in fact, I played it when it was the first DVD-based game ever for the Mac, replacing five CD-ROMs. The graphics were superb, and I understand that they require lots of memory Read More
Homescreens – Dezember 2010 (iPhone + iPad)

Interview With id Software’s John Carmack

posted by Trey Trawick on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 11:08 pm.   Ars Technica has an excellent interview with the creator of the graphically stunning for iOS, John Carmack. They discuss the intricacies of the various platforms and compare the current generation of mobile hardware to that of full-fledged consoles. It’s an extremely interesting read, and doesn’t contain too much technical jargon for our non-geek readers. Whether the iOS devices will reach that same level of performance before the next console generation ships is quite an interesting question. There are some very different designs for power consumption considerations that go into their hardware design, and cranking things up to give that level of power but gets burning hot in your hands and uses up the battery in 30 minutes is absolutely possible with the form factor right now, but it’s probably not the right decision from the standpoint of what the device Read More
Rage HD for iPad- app review

By Chad Garrett, Saturday, Nov 27, 2010 | When I saw John Carmack show off Rage on the iPhone a few months back, I was rather excited. The promise of real console-like graphics were in our grasp. Then, the game finally came out and I was initially blown away, but then… Rage HD on iPad is set in a post-apocalyptic future. Typical of these types of games where you play a contestant out to earn money by defeating mutants. The game is set in a first-person shooter (FPS) perspective, but it is on rails. This means the game “moves” for you and you are only allowed to maneuver the cursor on screen at any given time. This is okay, as the games visuals are amazing and this style of game worked really well for Doom Resurrection on iPhone. The screen is comprised of only a few buttons. The left side is Read More

Rage HD: Lite Version of Upcoming Console Release
Calendar16 Wed, 24 Nov 2010 20:20:29 UTC +00:00
posted by D. St. Charles on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 12:20 pm.   Game developers have long used free or add-supported teaser apps to get players hooked on their games, hoping they will like the game so much they will be willing to purchase a full version.  With the release of Rage HD, a new sales tactic has been employed: sell a limited iOS version of a game in anticipation of the upcoming console release. John Carmack, creator of Quake and Doom, and technical director of id (the company that released Rage) explained that the intense graphics of Rage would be cost-prohibitive for just an iOS app.   Since the game is in development for consoles, the graphics and gameplay could be pared down and released effectively for iOS.  And although a teaser app, Carmack expects Rage HD to make a respectable profit, and hopes gamers will be willing to shell out more money for the Playstation 3, Read More

Because stealth games are ones of my guiltiest pleasures, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood has been consuming the most of my time. That obsession probably started with Tenchu way back in 1998 on the PlayStation. Although the Metal Gear series popularized stealth action, I never really got into those games, and few stealth games have been able to hold my attention. The only real exceptions have been the Assassin’s Creed series and Splinter Cell: Conviction. The biggest problem with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is that it feels more like an expansion pack to Assassin’s Creed II than its own standalone game. Regardless, some much needed upgrades to the game’s dynamics have made Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood a worthwhile adventure. Admittedly, I’ve Read More
It's been a huge week for iOS gaming. Yesterday witnessed the arrival of a dazzling new Star Wars title, and today I've got quick takes on five more noteworthy new games--starting with a just-in-time movie tie-in. Lego Harry Potter plays just like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP version--and looks even better. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4  A near-perfect replica of the outstanding console game, Lego Harry Potter (which I previewed last week) loses almost nothing in its transition to the small screen. (And for now, it's only for small screens: the game requires iOS 4.1 or later, which leaves iPads out.) Alas, there's no option for cooperative play, and using your finger (rather than a virtual joystick) to guide your character often blocks the onscreen action. But all the levels (40+ in all) are there, along with the game's witty cutscenes, 100-plus character choices, and so on. Definitely worth the Read More
Review: RAGE HD for iPhone and iPad
Calendar16 Fri, 19 Nov 2010 22:01:05 UTC +00:00
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been excited about RAGE HD ever since id Software debuted it this past August. The game ran at a smooth 60 fps with very little effort by id Software engineers and its graphics looked a lot better than the majority of iOS games that are currently on the market. id Software released the first RAGE game for both the iPhone and iPad yesterday titled “RAGE HD” which takes players through a popular post-apocalyptic TV game show in the RAGE world, Mutant Bash TV, where players fight for big cash prizes. Should you spend your hard earned $2 for it? Find out in our review. RAGE HD is an on-rails first-person shooter that has you playing the role of a contestant of one of RAGE’s most popular TV game shows, Mutant Bash TV. Think American Gladiators, but instead of Laser or Turbo trying to either Read More
Feel the Rage: id Software's Latest iOS Game Lands Today
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 17:10:00 UTC +00:00
By – id Software's latest project, Rage, won't be released until sometime next well into next year. What we do have today, however, is a game based on the console shooter, scaled down for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The game is an on-rails shooter, which means the camera moves in a fixed position as you shoot the bad guys. It also serves to show the capabilities of the id Tach 5 game engine on the iPhone, as one user has already noted. We don't know if it will be one of the top iphone games of 2010, but with titles like this and Epic's Infinity Blade, it looks like the visuals in iPhone games are starting to rival other platforms. iSmashPhone Review - Rage

href="http://digg.com/submit?url=http%3A//www.ismashphone.com/2010/11/ismashphone-review-rage.html"> One of the best-looking games on iOS right now. That’s Rage for iOS in one sentence. Rage is based on the upcoming console and PC game of the same name, but takes the action to the small screen. Oh yeah, did we mention that it looks freakin’ amazing? Rage is an on-rails shooter for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that puts the player in the middle of a game show in which they are forced to go up against mutants. Much like the old Schwarzenegger movie, The Running Man, losing in this show means death for the character. Because the game is on-rails, you don’t have to worry about both navigating your character and aiming to fire which can be difficult on a touchscreen. This works favorably for the iOS platform in that sense. However, there is a downside: you will often find yourself trying to look in one Read More
I'm not really sure where to start with this review since we've posted so much about RAGE [99¢ / HD] in the past, but for the sake of not leaving people who stumble across this review on Twitter or Google out in the cold, here's some back story. Back at QuakeCon in August, John Carmack pulled his iPhone out of his pocket and surprised the audience with a incredibly impressive tech demo of a portion of the upcoming RAGE first person shooter complete with the new id Tech 5 graphics engine. iOS gamers were left with their jaws on the floor as the potential of a pocket sized-version of RAGE ran wild in everyone's imagination. The full version of RAGE for the PC and home consoles isn't going to be released until late next year, but the iOS version is only a small peek into the RAGE universe. It comes in Read More
Rage HD Lands on the iPhone [and It Looks Amazing]
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 16:56:36 UTC +00:00
I’m not a gamer at all but I can certainly appreciate a good game when I see one. Rage HD, a first-person shooter from iD Software (the creators of Doom and Quake) is one of those. Rage HD is an on-rails shooter where the character moves for you while you control his field of view, pointing and shooting at your enemies with an insane range of weapons. Enough with the talking, let’s have a look at Rage HD in action… It’s interesting to note that iD Software released 2 versions of the game. A “normal” one for older iDevices like the iPhone 3G, and the HD version for more robust devices like the iPhone 4 or the iPad. Priced at $1.99, Rage HD doesn’t look like a bad deal at all. If that’s your kinda game, you may want to give it a try and download it in the App Store. Read More
RAGE Out Now for iPhone and iPad!
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:52:13 UTC +00:00
The game demonstrated by John Carmack at QuakeCon 2010 is now available for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4/iPod Touch 4G and the iPad!  RAGE is a rail shooter by id Software and sees you take control of a character in the Mutant Bash TV gameshow, where you must battle your way through several locations stuffed with blood-thirsty mutants. You weapons range from a pistol to a shotgun to a machine gun, all will a limited amount of ammunition replenished by collecting ammo packs, plus you can use any collected cash to boost your character’s stats.  This was always going to be a demo-piece, a look-at-what-we-can-do game, and promises to have some stunning graphics and speed. But is this the first time we’re being asked to pay more for an iPhone 4 version?  You see, you can pay $0.99/£0.59 for RAGE, the regular 3GS version of the game, but if you want Read More
Angry Birds spotlights Android fragmentation
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 13:08:28 UTC +00:00
The good news for Android is that it's flexible enough to reach many corners of the smartphone market. The bad news is that this can mean headaches for programmers--as the top-ranked game Angry Birds illustrated today. Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile has announced that it's going to create a second version of its flagship game for lower-end Android devices after finding "severe performance issues." "With our latest update, we worked hard to bring Angry Birds to even more Android devices. Despite our efforts, we were unsuccessful in delivering optimal performance," the Angry Birds developer team said today in the blog post. "So far, we have hesitated to create multiple versions of Angry Birds for the Android platform. But judging by the feedback we have received, we feel that by providing a lightweight solution, we are doing a favor for our fans. We are currently developing a lighter solution to run Angry Read More

Id Software's 'RAGE' Hits US App Store
Calendar16 Thu, 18 Nov 2010 04:27:20 UTC +00:00
As of a few minutes ago we're able to cross another game off of our most anticipated list. Id's [99¢ / $1.99] is an on-rails shooter where players compete on an in-game game show called . We explained the basic gameplay in our preview: Something worth emphasizing is that while it is a rails shooter like DOOM Resurrection, instead of only moving a crosshair around you can move the entire field of view, giving a much greater feeling of immersion. RAGE comes in two flavors, a "standard definition" version and a "high definition" version. RAGE HD has higher quality graphical assets, and a much larger file size. Both are universal and will work on the iPad. So which one do you get? Well, if you have an iPhone 4, a 4th generation iPod touch, or an iPad, you really need to get RAGE HD. If you've got a 3rd generation iPod Read More
