I don’t normally go for racing games that don’t have at least one of the two following qualities: a futuristic setting or weapons. However, after taking Ridge Racer for a spin through a couple of races, I really want to like it. The visuals are some of the best I’ve seen in a racer that doesn’t take place on another planet, and the tracks are laid out nicely. However, the shoddy controls make the game less than fun to play, and the lack of substance you get with the initial purchase make me despise the whole in-app purchase concept even more than I already did. Ridge Racer first hit the scene in 1993 as an arcade title, but gained mass appeal in 1995 as a launch title for Sony’s original Playstation thanks to its reliance on drifting, which gave it a very unique feel for an arcade racer, at least in those days.  That same great game is now, in a sense, available in the App Store. Mit den kompakten Ausmaßen von 50 Megabyte flitzt die Ridge Racer-Serie von Namco in den App Store (Link). Das Rennspiel der ehemaligen Arcade-Automaten und PlayStation-Konsole bietet zu Spielbeginn zwei Strecken und zwei Fahrzeuge. Wer sich tapfer durch die Kurven schwingt, schafft es eventuell die zwei besagten Rennabschnitte in umgekehrter Richtung freizuschalten. Ein paar zusätzliche Fahrzeuge winken bei erfolgreichem Überstehen der mehr als knappen Zeitbegrenzung. Während auch das Original mit einer (für heutige Verhältnisse) stark reduzierten Anzahl von Rennstrecken und Wagen auffuhr, liefert Namco-Bandai mit der iPhone-Version eine vollständig vermurkste Umsetzung. Das Zeitlimit ist für die Accelerometer-Steuerung lächerlich knapp. Verfängt man sich bei einem der ausgedehnten Drifts in einer Pistenbegrenzung, fehlt ein Rückwärtsgang am Fahrzeug. Aufgrund der verlorenen Sekunden bedeutet dieser Fahrfehler jedoch in fast 100-Prozent aller Fälle ein Scheitern auf der Jagd nach euren Kontrahenten. Tra le caratteristiche del gioco troviamo la possibilità di acquistare nuovi tracciati ed automobili tramite l’in-app purchase.
