Rise of the Triad - review

Published: February 21, 2010 Comment         The unofficial sequel to the original Wolfenstein 3D has arrived on the iPhone and iPod Touch… can this retro FPS keep up with the new kids on the block, or is it time to collect it’s pension? I have to say, when I was a kid playing these early FPS games such as Duke, Wolfenstein and DOOM I must have missed Rise of the Triad, until now I’d simply never heard of it. So, on fresh eyes this falls, and I have no  fanboy affinity with it whatsoever. The game sees you play as a rag tag A-team style military unit known as H.U.N.T, which quite obviously stands for High Risk United Nations Task-force! You have been sent to a mysterious island monastery to investigate a strange cult hell bent on destroying LA. You can choose from one of five characters, all with slightly Read More
This Week’s App Store Updates – 19th February

Browsing the App Store this weekend?  Here are seven new or updated apps worth taking a closer look at if you are: This is the official application from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  There is a list of all the 2010 nominees, with trailers for each picture, plus the chance to predict the winners of each category ahead of the ceremony. A great looking and most importantly, free, multiple service IM client, which has support for AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk, Windows Live, MySpace and Facebook, plus a variety of others.  The app has Push notifications and connects via EDGE, 3G and Wi-FI. Another great game from PopCap, this is a port of the popular PC/Mac version.  You must fight off invading hordes of zombies, using just as the title suggests, only a collection of plants.  There are 50 levels, iPhone exclusive achievements and the great graphics and sound Read More

'Rise of the Triad' Strafes into the App Store
Calendar16 Sat, 13 Feb 2010 20:14:39 UTC +00:00
Last week we noted that an iPhone port of the PC classic Rise of the Triad, which we first caught wind of back back in July, had been made official and would soon be hitting the App Store. We're happy to report that the game has gone live [App Store] and those wanting to take on maniac cult leader El Oscuro and his minions on the iPhone are in luck. Apogee / Mobila Interactive's iPhone port of ROTT brings all there is to like about 1994 PC original to our favorite mobile platform. The game features 32 levels, a choice of five characters to play (each with unique attributes), five different, customizable controls schemes, and the original game's full soundtrack. A notable feature of the original at the time, the player can look both up and down -- up to 45 degrees in either direction -- to better take in the Read More

i have ZERO lag on this game i have a 3gs but for me this game runs smooth no lag or slow down of any kind. my only complaints are its a little dark a brightness option would be great and the menu buttons are to small but the game play is perfect for me thanks for the port (and of course multiplayer would be fine with me)
Poor Controls Ruin Gameplay
THE COLOSSVS 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
The issue with this game is that the control systems are all seriously flawed. The thumbsticks stick/lag behind your input regardless of sensitivity setting for as much as half a second. Higher sensitivities result in your character doing nothing for half a second, then shooting off at great speed uncontrollably. Low sensitivity settings are completely worthless. The tilt, also, seems to lag horribly behind the tilting action regardless of threshold setting. Furthermore, the amount of tilting required to make the game recognize the tilt renders tilt input useless. This is a shame, because everything else seems to be spot-on. The controls render what could have been a truly outstanding addition to the platform a frustrating, nearly unplayable disappointment. FWIW I am (trying to be) playing on an iPhone 3G, and have tried tweaking all the detail settings, etc. as well as multiple resets. I would not recommend buying this until the control schemes are addressed. Wait for an update!
I tried to like it

The controls need to be fixed.
ROTT! Almost 100%- ALMOST everything I remember it to be..some suggestions
SDeFranco1 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Please please PLEASE tweak the controls! A bit tough to do anything with the fire button so close to the swipe to look areas- see Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone- they have a strafe/ turn directional, and a fire you can move where you like on screen. Also, SFX get cut off while others play (IE glass breaking won't make any sound if someone's shooting etc). Some SFX are completely missing too (IE thunder and lightning sounds and some weapon sounds). I am FLOORED that you actually included the Christmas date easter egg (YES I checked). How about some cheats like sixtoys and goto etc... like the PC version of old, maybe have a way to get a typing console to come up (unless it's already there and we gotta find it ;)). Otherwise- music and everything else I remember and loved is here. This is not a cheap knockoff port folks- this IS ROTT!
