12 iPhone Apps for Surviving Conference Season

Amybeth Hale is a Talent Attraction Manager with AT&T’s Interactive Staffing team. She uses social technology to help drive awareness of job opportunities as well as interact with candidates. Connect with her on Twitter at @researchgoddess. As conference season is upon us (including SXSW, of course), I began thinking about all the things one might need to survive and stay connected with a busy schedule of travel and networking. Personally, I’m headed to San Diego to attend both SourceCon and the ERE Spring Expo. Then I remembered that I’m the proud owner of an iPhone, and that almost everything I’ll need to make it through is easily accessible and at the tip of my fingers. Here are some of the apps which I believe will help you navigate, stay connected, and meet new friends when you attend a conference. If you’re the ultimate procrastinator and you haven’t yet booked a hotel, Read More

Robotvision: A decent early stab at augmented reality
Calendar16 Sat, 10 Oct 2009 16:30:00 UTC +00:00
Ever since I first saw heads-up-displays in science fiction movies like The Terminator, I knew that I had to get my hands on one. How neat it would be to get instant information on anything about anything in my field of vision? Well, just as the iTablet won't be the Knowledge Navigator, the new buzz-phrase of the year, augmented reality, won't give me Terminator eyes. Such is life. I tested out a pretty decent augmented reality app called Robotvision [iTunes Link], and for US $0.99 what you get, if you have an iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1 or better, is quite cool. Will it solve your problems, cure the common cold, or tell you anything that more established apps won't? Not really. But tossing a buck on a neat novelty is not unheard of in the iPhone 3GS world. This one does more than most. First you tell it how widely Read More

Robotvision – Bing-powered Augmented Reality for iPhone
Calendar16 Fri, 25 Sep 2009 20:22:44 UTC +00:00
Now that the iPhone OS 3.1 is officially official, the is free to play around with all sorts of cool AR apps. One of the coolest new augmented reality apps for iPhone is Robotvision. The iPhone AR app uses Bing’s new Bring iPhone SDK to help users to find nearby Tweets, geo-tagged Flickr photos and places of interest. Robotvision uses Yelp and Citysearch info to give the user the crowd-sourced lowdown on restaurants and businesses. AR, or augmented reality, is a new way to explore the world around you. Rather than show you a completely virtual mockup of the world around you, augmented reality technology takes a real-world view of the world (through the ‘s camera) and overlays location-data on top. What you get is a cameraview of the world that shows you interesting places of interest in the direction that your iPhone 3GS camera is pointed. What Robotvision does is Read More

Calendar16 Fri, 25 Sep 2009 12:05:02 UTC +00:00
Robotvision, an augmented reality application, is now available in the App Store. A few days ago we covered the app and were awaiting it’s release. Well, wait no more, you can now pick it up for just $0.99 in the App Store. Below is the demo video for those of you who missed it the first time… a pretty sweet app. Remember: you will need an iPhone 3GS with 3.1 firmware in order to install the app. Robotvision augmented reality browser is an exciting new way to explore the world around you. Using the accelerometer and compass technology of the iPhone 3GS, along with new camera capabilities of the 3.1 OS update, you can discover content and locations around you like never before. People say it’s like magic! Search for nearby locations, restaurants, points of interest — you name it! All using the power of Bing local search. Discover photographs taken Read More
Chi Read More

One that just hit the iTunes Store is an augmented reality app called Robotvision (iTunes link). Like other AR apps, it uses the video camera on the iPhone 3GS, as well as the GPS and the compass to bring up data about nearby restaurants and shops, including reviews. It gets this local business data from Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Once you find a place nearby, you can call it the business from Read More

Impressive App
Mbarthol 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a very practical app. It integrates ur camera and compass (only 3G S phones) to locate various points of interests while showing how far it is from ur current location, as well as give u an option to view driving routes via Google Maps. It also gives u the contact info if u need to call or connects u to Bing's which provides website information. Only for .99!
Reality turned upside down!
Lethic99 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app blows my mind! I can see anything I want to just by pointing my phone. Try it while driving, it's a trip! :)
Awesomeness. Complete Awesomeness
Pic2022 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
i love this app, i bought it, it does exactly what it should. the only thing is the twitter/flickr part does not add a lot of… feeds? i guess it will be called? i get 1 twitter feed every time i start up the program, and sometimes they are from different people. and while i use tiwtterific on my phone and do a nearby search i get like 15 people. i just think the app needs to get its feet off the ground first i guess. but again this app is amazing and it does everything it says it will do. its a must buy.
Best ar app yet
Joe1234511111 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Much better than bionic eye!
Incredible
d3v1ld0g 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am so glad AR apps are finally here and this one is great! It is very smooth and has a map view when the camera is pointed down. You can run a search on a business, restaurant, etc., or you can search by category. The twitter and flickr integration is great too, though I found it a little creepy that I could see tweets and pictures from people I don't even know. Overall, it's a great start to augmented reality.
RobotVision is state of the art!
Jbit1973 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
In minutes I'm discovering new things close to home. I found a Tweet from an old pastor of mine. I found a new Greek restaurant just down the street. I can't wait to see what this technology has to offer in the next year or less. This is truly amazing. I definitely recommend RobotVision to anyone I know. It is well worth the 99 cents.
This app punks awsome!
Athlwulf 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is one of those game changing apps that will change the way you find everything from ATMs to fast food off the side of the freeway. I work in the city and only go to a few restaurants on my habitual beaten path. Now, I see places I never knew existed. Very cool.
Works very well!
mepilot1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
So excited to see the Augmented Reality (AR) apps start to flow in! This one works nicely. Like that you can type in the name of business you are looking for or do a catagory search. Sitting in Starbucks, pointed the camera out the door, typed in a business I was looking at and it popped right up. Did a search for a gas station catagory search and that worked great too! Like having Google search but better! Understand the backend search is Bing so cool! Competition is good. Good job guys! Keep up the enhancents to push your momentum on your app.
Amazing- Best AR App in the store... bar none
aerofan34 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Much better than bionic eye and nearestwhatever stuff. Why would you want to have seperate single purpose apps?
Revolutionary
BiggieMakris 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a very useful app. A must for the traveller!
Loving it already!
Aaauuugh 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Puts Yelp's AR to shame. I like the integration of bing, Twitter, and flickr. I've already found interesting things to see and do by using Robotvision. A couple enhancement requests: 1) integrate mapping within the app so we don't have to leave RV when getting walking directions. 2) show some feedback when auto-searching for new content. Sometimes I don't know it is still updating. 3) when there are a lot of overlays, it is difficult to see the one you want. I like that you can scroll through them just by selecting one of them. Either go to "icon" mode if more than 5 or 10 nearby, or slightly overlap overlays. 4) force Starbucks to build a store way out on the tip of Long Beach, WA :-)
Mind-blowing
Astros Fan 02 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am astonished that this is even possible. I love unique apps like this one. Although I haven't really found any use for something like this in my daily life, I'm sure it may come in handy eventually. I just recently created a flickr account & while I was uploading pics of Minute Maid Park in Houston, I could also see other pictures that people have taken there at the stadium. I couldn't believe it. It was like viewing the stadium in different perspectives through many other eyes & different times of day. Like I said, I have yet to find an actual "use" for this app in my everyday life, but this app is still a must-have for $.99.
exemplary!
nicofiend 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
An absolutely phenomenal app with practical use in my daily life. I utilize public transportation and although I'm not sure from where its pulling arrival/departure times... they are accurate for each indivudal stop!
Absolutely awesome
dagnomer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can't believe this app is only .99!
Worst app
RA RED 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Don't go by positive reviews. They are written by developers friend. I got this app, I launched it and my camera was on for no apperant reason. I searched Restaurants it says 20 location found BUT there was no way to see those 20 location. You need to level the phone to see the location. It's so stupid even then it returns very few results. Native google Map shows you picture of exact location. If you wanna search something, you wouldn't go for this app.
Sweeter than Yelp!
The Larster 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Pretty nice app. Works awesome with some neat features like Twiiter, Flickr and maps when you hold the phone down. Only thing missing (from what I saw) is a way to submit reviews to Yelp. Well worth .99
Very nicely done.
brc5 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app is pretty sweet. My one suggestion for future versions is a setting to toggle the camera on/off, because it was eating up my battery. However, if there was ever a "check out my cool iPhone app" app, this is it.
Crashy McRobot
Tipsy McStumbles 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have not been able to keep this app running for more than 2 minutes at a time. It keeps crashing, even after rebooting the phone. Can't get nearby tweets or Flickr photos to work, either.
Love it!
getjams 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app! So cool and the wikipedia integraion will be great
Battery hog!
howithink 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
It kills the battery in minutes and not to mention the countless exception errors. The concept is good, and it works some of the time, but i just wish it worked all the time. Fix these issues and then it will be an amazing phone.
Amazing
Erika lee 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Life changing
Awesome App
Blackbeard2006 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app is great. It is the best AR app that I have seen. I love that you can search for anything. Also love the flickr and twitter integration. Also the price is great!
Very, very cool...
Steve-dogg 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I've been excited about augmented reality apps ever since the first demo I saw. This app has the most promise of any geo-search utility yet. The Flickr, Bing, Twitter and Wikipedia integration is awesome! I also recommend the AR Starfield apps such as Pocket Universe.
a good start
adavancedcustomer 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
The idea is good however need a number of impromements. Still does not work in ladscape mode. When there are much items in the same direction they are stacked in an inconvenient manner (hard to traverse the list).
Needed Additions to the app
Cydeus 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
Social sites like facebook & myspace should be on here. Additions like these I would gladly pay for. Twitter is fine but the two I just mentioned would make this app phenomenal.
