10 Classic PC Games That Found New Life on the iPhone
Calendar16 Sat, 21 Aug 2010 19:20:51 UTC +00:00
by Apple’s iPhone may mark a second golden age of computer gaming for a lot of reasons. The open marketplace means anyone can create a game; from major companies to just a couple of talented people in a garage. The result is a new boom in innovation, the likes of which we haven’t seen in about 20 years. Even with all the potential for innovation, maybe you still want to relive that first golden age of gaming. If you’re excited for how new tech can update the classics, then this list is for you: 10 of the greatest, most influential, straight-up classic computer games ever made, all available on and completely remastered for Apple’s handset, and in most cases also playable on the iPod touch and iPad. There are so many phenomenal PC game ports for the iPhone that we had a hard time narrowing it down to just 10. We Read More
As long-time readers are surely aware, I'm a retro gaming nut and, within that classification, am a particular fan of the roguelike / dungeon crawler genre. Gamers like me were handed real treat early last year when ChronoSoft released [App Store], an iPhone adaptation of / enhancement to the 1980 genre-defining . One of my absolute favorite iPhone games, Rogue Touch really takes me back to those long hours spent in front of Rogue on my Atari ST back in 1987. Developer Kevin Hill has done a great job of updating the game since its initial release, and in ways strongly shaped by the user community in the Touch Arcade forums, Kevin tells me. He's just released version 1.52 of Rogue Touch [link] that addresses iOS 4 performance issues along with a number of other enhancements: It's great to see the game continue to evolve and, in fact, Kevin indicates that Read More
GDC 2010: Hands-On with Dungeon Crawler '100 Rogues'
Calendar16 Mon, 15 Mar 2010 20:41:18 UTC +00:00
Out at GDC 2010 last week I had a chance to sit down with Wes Paugh of Dinofarm Games to get a bit of hands-on time with their upcoming iPhone roguelike, 100 Rogues, which we covered, most recently, last month. Wes explained that 100 Rogues is designed to be approachable by adventure gamers that aren't necessarily hardcore roguelike aficionados. The game features a modern, enhanced graphics set that should appeal to players more than the fairly sparse presentation of most roguelikes out there. Certain options and items have been kept more basic, as well, in the name of keeping things straight forward for the player. For example, there are only two character classes: Fairy Wizard and Human Crusader, and there are a good number of items to collect and equip along the way, but not the thousands of obscure scrolls found in the more traditional roguelike offerings. 100 Rogues, a name Read More

New '100 Rogues' Preview Video Released – I Can't Wait
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Feb 2010 23:29:47 UTC +00:00
We first got word of 100 Rogues late last year. Much like Sword of Fargoal, 100 Rogues seems to be taking the classic roguelike formula and sprucing it up quite a bit with colorful art, animations, and multiple character classes. Of course all the roguelike staples are in place such as randomly generated maps and permadeath as well as modern features like online leaderboards. Dinofarm Games recently released a new gameplay video highlighting the crusader class with complete narration from the developers detailing the gameplay and interface elements in the game: I'm a huge fan of the roguelikes, and I really like that developers are taking such an excellent genre and making it approachable to people who likely don't even know what a roguelike is. Getting used to permadeath takes a bit of adjustment, especially with how many video games lately have been trending towards regenerative health systems (Such as nearly Read More
The 53 Best iPhone Games [IPhone Apps]
Calendar16 Thu, 14 Jan 2010 00:40:00 UTC +00:00
Scouring the App Store for the best games is a full time job. Luckily, it's a job held by the guys over at Touch Arcade. Here are their picks for the best games—and only games—available on the iPhone. While the App Store had clearly been a huge success in 2008, the continued growth and explosion of iPhone game releases in 2009 was beyond everyone's expectations. The number of apps in the App Store soared past 100,000 with hundreds of new games being released every day. We sat down trying to figure out the best iPhone games of 2009 and found the task of narrowing down the list to a select few to be near impossible. Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. If you just got an iPhone or iPod Touch for Christmas, this list is Read More

iPhone Gaming: Looking Back on 2009 and Forward to 2010
Calendar16 Thu, 24 Dec 2009 20:20:34 UTC +00:00
With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform Read More

Last night, iPhone developer Dirk Zimmermann released iNetHack [App Store] for the iPhone, a port of NetHack 3.4.3, released in 2003. For those unaware, the open source NetHack is one of the better known "roguelike" dungeon crawlers, which places the player, who assumes one of many available fantasy roles such as knight, barbarian, wizard, rogue, valkyrie, monk, and samurai, and his/her companion (usually a kitten, a puppy, or a pony) at the top level of a deep dungeon populated with all manner of creatures that go bump in the night.  The mission?  Retrieve the Amulet of Yendor which resides at the lowest level of the dungeon and bestows upon the successful adventurer the gift of immortality.  Along the way a number of sub-quests must be completed.  Few are up to the challenge.... Being a roguelike, iNetHack has much in common with the similarly-inspired Rogue Touch [App Store], one of my favorite Read More

Very nice engine and interface
Bad Yeti 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I scored this application as how successfully the developer was able to port and present the original game, Rogue. It's a very solid port, and the controls are easy to use. The scroll usage animation is really cool.
Rogue the way it should be played
Frapstr.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
ChronoSoft's version of Rogue plays off of the classic Epyx version, and features easy, intuitive controls combined with great classic graphics and atmospheric background music. Definitely the best Rogue on the iPhone yet, and it will be a tough act to follow if anyone else tries to top it.
Good port of the classic Rogue
Kennfusion 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am giving it 4 stars, but that is a rating for what it is, a faithful port of the classic game. They have done a great job of updating it from the ground up for the IPhone/Touch. It does seem to be a little easier at first than the original, with increased food drops and easier combat up until about a depth of 10 levels down. The game really needs auto-run and the ability to listen to your ipod music, but the developers have stated in a couple forums that these are two of the top items for their update list. At first I questioned the price, but finally decided to go for it. I have been playing Rogue for 20 years or something, it is certainly worth the price of admission.
Retro goodness with a fresh presentation and nice surprises
Lantosel 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I'm a fan of the classic Rogue-like games. For those of you who are not familiar, Rogue is a dungeon crawler from the 80's where the dungeon, character, items and monsters are represented by capital letters and punctuation marks. Each new game presents you with a randomly generated dungeon that challenges you to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor. Rogue is known for its re-playability and strategic elements. It is generally considered the first "graphical" adventure game. Versions and variations are still available today for practically any device that can run it.
Great little port
JindoFox 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Rogue Touch is a fun, playable, intuitive port of this great old game. People expecting PSP-style graphics should take note that the original versions of Rogue were played with typewriter characters on mainframe computers, so the simple tile-based graphics seen here are already a big step up from what old-school players might prefer. This will keep me busy until someone ports Nethack to the iPhone!

Mr.Apple23 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
One word to describe such a game. EPIC!!! It is extremely addicting. One of the best games i have yet to play on the iphone/ipod touch!
Simple yet addicting.
Calvin B 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I'll admit it, I'm new to Rogue. Never played the famous original. All I knew is that Rogue is a dungeon crawler. So imagine my surprise when I load this game and find myself immersed in a dungeon filled with unique monsters, tons of items and a sprawling dungeon. Rogue, at it's core, is a simple game. At the same time it is an addicting dungeon crawler which keeps you coming back for its sprawling dungeon, numerous enemies and unique spell and item system. When you download rogue, expect an endless dungeon crawler with challenging battles and addictive character development that will keep you playing for months to come. This game is most certainly worth a download.
Ahhhh Nostalgia!
ambercricket 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This takes me back a few years... Thanks for the memories!
Rogue Rocks!
Koios1518 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Excellent game play. Well thought out. Finally a real dungeon crawler for the iPhone!
Terrific implementation
dod488 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
This is definitely worth the money! I met Michael Toy back in the 80's when he and Jon Lane ran their business at the Old Mill Shopping Center in Mt. View, CA. Played Hack and Nethack for years. They got way too complex (played them anyway ... way too much). Chronosoft has done a great job of making a very enjoyable and fun experience from an "old friend." Thank you!
Amazing all around!
Zakia789 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
**Please read full review before purchase.
Worth every penny!
Dewzap 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the best version of Rogue to date and it's on your iPhone/touch :)
Great Implementation
junkurchin 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's a great version of Rogue and works the way it should on an iPhone.
The perfect game
Valentia 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
I've been playing roguelike games for 20 years and this implementation of Rogue has me hooked like nothing ever before. It is fantastic. The dev is incredibly helpful and responsive to customer input. I think I shall be wandering these dangerous corridors for a very long time. There's a very nice little community shaping up in the forum, and there's a leader board for best and worst performances by a character. I'm Lydyra--come see if you can beat my record for a fast death (darn wand of polymorph). :)
The Grandaddy of Roguelikes is Back!
Lord Gek 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
This is a very slick implementation of one of the all time classics (I think I've seen it ported to pretty much every computer system known to man) with very intuitive touch controls and autosaving. The recent addition of Online Leaderboards now allows you access to a Global Hall of Fame!
Wonderful adaptation of the Rogue engine.
sirAnger 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
I've been playing roguelikes since I was a wee lad, without much knowledge of their predecessor. Only more recently have I discovered the granddaddy roguelike, from which their name comes - Rogue. I was a amazed how a simple ruleset and interface could produce such a robust game.
Speechless...
Maythius 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Out of all the games in my ipod touch. Rogue Touch is the only game I can safely say; will never leave my ipod. This game takes all the greatness from the original rogue and slams it with an extra slice of awesomeness. If you are an RPG attic you can not afford to miss this title, and don't think you can just get the free verion, because that version will ruin you whole perspective of what this game has to offer.
Set the Wayback Machine!
Lazysumo 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Incredible and authentic port of the game that ate so many hours of my life. The graphics get the job done, but you'll come back for the exploration and gameplay. Your dungeon diving hero must start at the top of a 20+ floor dungeon filled with all sorts of evil nasties. Get to the bottom and get the loot, then survive to get back to the top. Good times! NOTE: Developer has stated that the game will allow your own music to continue playing after next update. Why don't all games do this by default? Thanks to the dev for listening to customer feedback!
Pleasant Surprise!
Garbagemaster 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Ok, I'm a newbie to this game, despite my age. Bought this game a few days ago based on the good reviews, not expecting much. Well, I'm hooked! I love that it's never the same game twice. Can't resist seeing what's behind that next door! :) Definite must buy if you love RPG/dungeon exploration!

Tornadoes Rule 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
A walk down memory lane!! Feels like I'm back in the 1980's.....sitting at my 128k Macintosh playing epyx rouge. I've been hoping that someone would make an iphone version of this classic game & you guys nailed it. I feel like a kid again!! Now can someone make a iPhone version of Dark Castle??
Best Rogue incarnation period!
kirothak 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
this is the best ver of rogue i have played, the controls are user friendly which was the old rogues biggest downfall. and as for the fool that game a 1 star rating cuz of no visable scores .... wow seriously there is plenty of reason to keep playing... like beating it maybe?
Finally!
hleibov 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Been waiting for a Rogue game on the iPhone. There's one other but the controls were so strange it was unplayable. I was a little hesitant to pay for this one without having a free trial version... VERY glad I bought it! It's everything I loved about the pc version. Can't put it down! Hours of time passing on this one! Thanks a bunch for releasing such a great version of Rogue for the iPhone!
Was four, now five stars.
storableprawn 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
The first version was great, even kept me from classics like fieldrunners. The update adds everything I wanted and more. This still ain't nethack, but this is an amazing rogue like. I hope the updates keep coming! This is my favorite app by far.
Really fun and challenging
GJX100 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game totally brought back memories for me of playing similar games in college in the late 80's. Its really true to the old style and its a lot of fun to play. Its pretty challenging as well. Highly recommended if you like old style D&D type games.
A solid first game, with great potential
Scot of the Highlands 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Sweet merger of old-time gaming with a new look and interface! The original used to be played with a full keyboard and text characters, you were the @ symbol in a sea of punctuation and little letters, the monsters. Wasn't sure if I would like the revamped control scheme but despite the one complainer here it is pretty easy to use, and does not get in the way. A few more shortcuts or gestures wouldn't hurt though. Agreed that you should be able to see the doors on the mini-map, and I read elsewhere that the devs plan to fix that. If they do and keep updating it as they promise I'll give 5 stars!
So addictive
Mattastic82 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's always sad to die when you get so far, but that's Rogue for you ;-)
Overall Superb
volwrath 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Perhaps a little pricey for what it is, but nonetheless is a faithful representation of Roguelike games
Great port!
Ravingmad 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been playing roguelikes for a long time now, and this is really an excellent implementation of the original Rogue. Good interface, good ambient sound, even some nice graphical touches like the scroll reading animation. Great work!
An excellent version of a classic game
Skizzybiz 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Rogue Touch review
The Grandaddy of Roguelikes is Back!
Lord Gek 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
This is a very slick implementation of one of the all time classics (I think I've seen it ported to pretty much every computer system known to man) with very intuitive touch controls and autosaving. The recent addition of Online Leaderboards now allows you access to a Global Hall of Fame! In this latest v1.5 the game has been made even tighter (Chronosoft just quashed a lot of buglets).
Even better every update!
Scot of the Highlands 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Sweet merger of old-time gaming with a new look and interface! The original used to be played with a full keyboard and text characters, you were the @ symbol in a sea of punctuation and little letters, the monsters. Wasn't sure if I would like the revamped control scheme but it is pretty easy to use, and does not get in the way. The new D-pad works very well too.
The perfect game
Valentia 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Updating my review for the new version (1.5):
Excellent, Fun and has a lot of Replay Value!!
CandyLadyNJ 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I'm a newbie to Rogue Touch, never played the games back in the day so I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but when I started playing, I really enjoyed it! It took me a bit to understand how to move in the game lol but after that, it was really cool moving around the dungeons!
Very Fun!
DMDavalos 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I must have spent more time on this game than all of the other games I have combined! One of the must have apps for the iPhone!
Improving on perfection
Big Drahma 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Rogue Touch has gone from good in 1.0 to great in 1.1, to nearly perfect in 1.3... By with this new version, it's even better. There's a coherent personality coming into focus, something unique to the developers. The game is mechanically perfect, and now the style is following suit. Awesome Home Screen app!
Amazing Game with Amazing Support
elswitzer 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Literally the only iphone game I play everyday. Great support from the devs too.
Excellent
eropel 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Lots of fun and a great representation of Roguelike games for the iphone. Enjoying this quite a bit. Author is very supportive and frequenly updates.
COULD BE a pretty fun game...however...
Bib Freshtuna 1.0 stars Version: 1.5
The game would be a 5 star if there weren't such an overabundance of permanent negative effects. There are too many traps and enemies that permanently damage your character and equipment!
WOW
user65 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Simply amazing. This game is very enertaining and worth it. I got it while on sale but it's well worth $4.99.
Rouge Touch is the best RPG on my ITouch
Warren W 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Great game. I had the "other" Rouge game available because it was free. Tried it and deleted it (very frustrating). Then I noticed the update for Rogue Touch on the TouchArcade site and thought it was for the other Rouge I had deleted. Not so. Rouge Touch is a completely different version of the old game many gamers loved years ago. Rouge Touch is waaaaay beyond what I thought it would be. I grabbed it while on sale, but would have gladly paid full price for this one. The publisher seems to have really taken into account all user complaints, bugs, fixes, whatever.
Best Rogue App to date
Euthanize 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Hands down the best Rogue port I've ever played. Not only captures the original game perfectly, but also includes regular updates which streamline gameplay.
wow
ROFL Copter117 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Amazing new version of a classic game.
Fantastic Game!
Chriswitt 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
Regularly play this one - will be staying on my iphone permanently.
Such a great game
Badcore 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
This game is fantastic. Here's a few reasons why:
Satisfied!
Ishkebibble 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
I was pleased to see this app go on sale ad although I've been pretty happy with the app store's free Rogue, I decided to get the pay version to see how it stacks up. I have to say that I'm pretty satisfied. This is an excellent graphical remake of the classic and the creative additions to the old idea definitely add to this app's awesomeness. As I've had Rogue Touch for only a few hours, I haven't really found anything I'd like added yet, however, a quick visit to the forums shows that the dev(s) is/are very receptive to requests and feedback. Chronosoft, I'm happy to say that you've done an EXCELLENT JOB. Now get to work on more roguelikes!
best game i've played on the iphone
twalkabout 5.0 stars Version: 1.5
i never played the original rogue, and at first this game seems kinda simplistic compared to something like diablo. but the genius of it lies in the total randomness of the items and maps. that gives it a huge replayability factor. add in the online leaderboards and be prepared to get hooked. icing on the cake is a developer who is super responsive and even plays the game himself!
