Ngmoco Hit With Layoffs
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Feb 2012 12:38:55 UTC +00:00
We've been covering the existence of ngmoco since the very beginning in mid-2008, back before they dropped the extra colon from their logo even. A month later, we were on top of their initial round of funding, and with the launch of nglabs and other amazing future promises, quite a few people (myself included) thought ngmoco was going to become the unquestionable king of iOS game development. It's been a long four years since then, and while we once knew ngmoco for releasing absolutely classic must-have games like Rolando [99¢], Rolando 2 [99¢], and Star Defense [99¢], they switched gears to championing the free to play game market in a major way in late 2009. We were blown away when it was announced that Eliminate [Free] was going to be free, and We Rule [Free] was equally popular around here as ngmoco made a splash on the App Store with one Read More
Rolando Updated with Retina Graphics
Calendar16 Fri, 01 Apr 2011 05:11:38 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 10:11 pm.   April Fools! Actually, April Fools on that April Fools, because as unimaginable as it sounds, Rolando has indeed been updated. Ngmoco, a company who has become a bit of a disappointment over the last year, has finally pulled through and updated the rolling adventure series Rolando with Retina display graphics. In its hay-day, Rolando was one of the all-time greats, and it’s wonderful to see that it is finally up to par with the latest display technology. Sadly, the graphics (and a lower price tag) are the only thing that have changed. Ngmoco hasn’t brought the fabled Rolondo 3 back from the grave (even as a joke). If you haven’t picked up Rolando yet, now is the perfect time to see what all the fuss is about. Read More
Ngmoco has surprised us with some updates. Rolando and its sequel Rolando 2 have both been updated for the iPhone 4's Retina Display and have had a few bug issues fixed. To celebrate the update, they're both on sale for just US$0.99. Either one of these is a bargain at that price. They're both very solid, original platformers, designed specifically for the iOS system. What's most interesting about this, though, is that Ngmoco has updated these at all. Rolando was one of the first big titles for the now gigantic iOS developer, but when Ngmoco moved into the We Rule freemium model, the Rolando series was more or less abandoned in favor of games that could use more microtransactions and attract more "DAUs" (daily active users). A lot of Rolando fans were disappointed with that direction, though Ngmoco's We Rule and other freemium games have seen plenty of success anyway. Rolando Read More
Vocal members of our community have long since written off ngmoco as a lost freemium cause, leaving us hardcore gamers in the dust as they move on to greener (and more casual) free to play pastures. The Rolando series seemed poised to become the Super Mario of the iOS platform when the original Rolando [99¢] hit in in late 2008. In July of 2009, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid [99¢] was released, and is better than the original in every way imaginable. Unfortunately, even though Rolando 3 was announced, poor sales of Rolando 2 combined with the wildly successful freemium-powered Eliminate [Free] seemed to be all ngmoco needed to seemingly give up on the Rolando franchise. Check out the trailer to see what Rolando 2 is all about: With a 99¢ price drop and a Retina Display update, I recommend everyone download Rolando 2, and you might as well Read More

App Store-Spiele wie Flick Fishing (0.79 €; App Store-Link), Days of Thunder (2.39 €; App Store-Link), Parachute Ninja (0.79 €; App Store-Link) oder Read More

September 2nd, 2009 James Isabel **Erratum: The article was originally titled Rolando 2. It’s now been corrected to read Rolando. Apologies for the mistake** Long before I came to the dark side and write (JK), I was once (only) a big iPhone gaming fan. Back then ng:moco ruled with MazeFinger and Pangea had a rep about as equal to Gameloft‘s status today. With Gameloft and Chillingo pushing new releases left and right, ng:moco and Pangea decided it’s time for some comebacks. Pangea Releases Enigmo 2 (Download: $2.99) I’d like to call Enigmo the pioneer of all iPhone puzzlers. It was and still is an enthralling  and challenging little bugger. With the sequel, it looks like Pangea turned it up a notch seeing this is their first release in months. Next up, ng:moco rolls Rolando in to $2.99 category. Ng:Moco’s Rolando Now $2.99 (Download) Now if Enigmo was a puzzler pioneer, Rolando Read More

Bovinedragon Software is the little-known creator of Trace, the popular draw your own path platformer for the iPhone and iPod touch that was released way back in October 2008.  The developer hasn’t released a new title since that time because they have been working on Gomi, a brand new adventure game with loads of content that took a little longer to release than expected. Gomi is kind of a mash-up of a variety of games, including Rolando, Katamari, and maybe a little Super Mario Galaxy.  In Gomi, the world has been overrun by civilization and you must clean it up by rolling your Gomi over anything and everything in its path.  The game is a 2D platformer that has you traveling through eight unique worlds with over 140 stages.  According to the developer, the game contains over 12 hours of gameplay, eight mini games, hundreds of achievements, online leader boards, hundreds Read More

Purely Incredible
UltimateOwnage 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
My iPod is quickly replacing BOTH my DS and PSP as my primary handheld gaming system, and it's amazing games like this that have allowed that to happen. This game is better than %90 of the what the DS and PSP offer as their BEST titles. I'm super impressed with the entire game. From the spot-on controls to the premium Locoroco quality visuals (which represent some of the best PSP has to offer), to the excellent soundtrack and presentation style - this game would cost you $39 on anything bit you iPhone or iPod Touch. Buy it now! I have every ngmoco game so far, and after seeing this, they have proven to be one of the most innovative and iconic names in gaming for iPhone and iPod Touch. Bravo!
Fantastic, when can we expect the next one?
fortris 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Okay, I haven't actualy beaten the game and I don't want to say that all good games stay good, but you have convinced me the hype was not for naught. But...
I WOULD WAIT FOR PRICE DROP!
iphone gaming addict 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
The game isn't bad, however ngmoco has a terrible reputation of dropping the price on their games a few days after release (I paid full price for Dropship and Dr. Awesome, only to have them be half price a mere TWO DAYS later).
This is the Super Mario Bros. of the iPhone
zakurie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Rolando is fun, challenging, and the first 'real' game for the iPhone.
Best game in the app store
Pauly666 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is indeed the super mario brothers of the iPhone. Buy it, you won't regret it.
Eh...
NINTENMAV 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Sorry, but this game is NOT worth $10. I'm not saying that because I'm cheap, I'm saying it because it really should be worth only a few bucks at the most. The graphics and music are snappy, but the length of the game is WAAAAY too short. I don't think the replay value is that great. Yea, you have a few medals to win to perfect every level, but that's it. Needs more "boss" type levels. It would make the game more interesting and longer. Also they need more types of rolandos and enemies. At times the game gets repetative. In conclusion, this game is too short to be worth $10. Save your money.
Really?! That many people like this game?
K-snak 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
I wish that Nintendo would develop for the iPhone. This game is really conventional iPhone stuff. I want to see something innovative. This is just a cute game with some stuff happening; and because this felt so typical, I feel like I paid way too much for this app.
Fantastic
theturninggate 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Slick design, great music, excellet and lengthy gameplay. Rolando is one of the app store's best offerings and well worth the premium price tag. This is a must-download for iPhone gamers.
THE Best iPhone and iPod Touch game to date!
MacFan101 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have spent hundreds of dollars in the App Store on games so I have played almost all of the notable iPhone games, but none and I truly mean none have ever come close to the level of greatness that ngmoco and Hand Circus have created with Rolando. Its fun, chalanging, and it really takes advantage of the iPhones hardware. No other iPhone game that I have played has ever had this level of polish and style. ngmoco and Hand Circus probably spent thousands of hours on creating this game and it shows! Great job! This is THE game that all other games will be compared to see if the are iPhone worthy. This game truly makes your iPhone or iPod Touch a Gaming console!
Great game!
str1f3 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very unique and incredibly fun even down to the credits. Has an automatic save feature when you suddenly quit, it remembers exactly where you were, which is a feature that every game should have. Best game from ngmoco yet!
So far from what I've played
Ezekiel06 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
So I downloaded this and played through the first few stages. The first thing I noticed was the quality. Everything from the music, sound effects, to the camera and menu transitions. Everything is very fluid and smooth. Even the credits are done well. The control scheme is unique and easy to pick up. You use tilt controls to move around combined with various finger gestures to get around various obstacles. Game is very solid, has not crashed on me, and I started playing without restarting my iPhone. This game is very fun, and I look forward to spending time with it trying to perfect the various courses. This game is truly worth $9.99
Hey Finger!
dj22091 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been downloading Apps for nearly six months now, and this is the one I've anticipated the most. =] Rolando is different from all the other games I have seen made for the iPhone & iPod Touch...and I have to say, different is good. When I first fired up Rolando I was very impressed with the graphics and their colorful, almost childlike, nature. The music, which I found to be very catching, is like the game itself: different and unique. 'Kudos to Hand Circus & ngmoco:) for an awesome new game. Truly worth the wait. =D
Console-Caliber Gaming
KALE-L 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't write many reviews, but I am so blown away with the quality of this game. It is so far beyond what anyone would expect from a cell-phone game, and holds up against some of the better DS and PSP games.
The First Great iPod Game
Figurhead 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Good controls, performance and good art, this is the first App that actually does it right.
What I Wished LocoRoco Was
Pompadoured 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Ngmoco took a good idea and made it great. Like Dropship, there's a level of polish in this game that proves the iPhone is a legit gaming platform. I'm glad I sold my PSP.
Amazing
iphone3Gballer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this game is amazing. It has the best controls of any game. The graphics are smooth, and let me tell you there is nothing else like this. Its a kind of its own. This game is downright amazing!!!
The Bar Has Been Set...
pjhorrex 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
... and set high. Hand Circus has put on a clinic on how to design a game around a platform and ALL iPhone game developers (including you, EA) would do well to pay attention to this title. The controls, graphics, physics gameplay, level design, and great save system have all been perfectly built around the strengths and weaknesses of the iPhone. Hand Circus have taken a substantial first step towards becoming the premiere iPhone game developers with this impressive first offering.
A standout effort
BananaJr2000 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
A very creative interpretation of how to use all the elements that the iPhone/Touch offers. From the playable credits and opening screen to the fold out land to the interative elements this is a really well done game that will advance the platform. Instead of trying to learn which button to push or control sequence to master in this game if you want to jump you swipe up, if you want to move you tilt, if you want to move the wheels or turn on the air or spring the Rolando's then you just operate them. No figuring out which button does what.
Rolando shows what the iPhone can, should and will be!
Cloudhands 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great graphics, interestingly fun game-play, well thought out controls and a soundtrack that is worth the price alone. In terms of quality, this is the game that all others should be judged!
FINALLY!!!!!
manolosavi 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
THE BEST GAME EVER IS FINALLY OUT!!!!! I've been waiting for this game for sooooo long! I LOVE IT!!!! don't read reviews! JUST GET IT!!! ;)
Fantastic!
R2=D2 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I cant believe im playing Rolando now! The gameplay is smooth, the view is great, the colors are so juicy - thats why i can call this game a masterpiece at the AppStore!
Don't get it!
zackymcharvest 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I don't want to be a dick here, really. But this app is WAY overpriced. It should be like 3.99 at the most. But good game if you want to pay a arm and a leg.
Polished!
Applegeek24 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very polsihed! No lag, graphics are clean and fluid. And is sooooo addicting. Also, adorable creatures. Lol
Fun Game But Short...and BUGS >:( Wish it was overall better...
