Ngmoco Hit With Layoffs
Calendar16 Thu, 09 Feb 2012 12:38:55 UTC +00:00
We've been covering the existence of ngmoco since the very beginning in mid-2008, back before they dropped the extra colon from their logo even. A month later, we were on top of their initial round of funding, and with the launch of nglabs and other amazing future promises, quite a few people (myself included) thought ngmoco was going to become the unquestionable king of iOS game development. It's been a long four years since then, and while we once knew ngmoco for releasing absolutely classic must-have games like Rolando [99¢], Rolando 2 [99¢], and Star Defense [99¢], they switched gears to championing the free to play game market in a major way in late 2009. We were blown away when it was announced that Eliminate [Free] was going to be free, and We Rule [Free] was equally popular around here as ngmoco made a splash on the App Store with one Read More
Rolando Updated with Retina Graphics
Calendar16 Fri, 01 Apr 2011 05:11:38 UTC +00:00
posted by Trey Trawick on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 10:11 pm.   April Fools! Actually, April Fools on that April Fools, because as unimaginable as it sounds, Rolando has indeed been updated. Ngmoco, a company who has become a bit of a disappointment over the last year, has finally pulled through and updated the rolling adventure series Rolando with Retina display graphics. In its hay-day, Rolando was one of the all-time greats, and it’s wonderful to see that it is finally up to par with the latest display technology. Sadly, the graphics (and a lower price tag) are the only thing that have changed. Ngmoco hasn’t brought the fabled Rolondo 3 back from the grave (even as a joke). If you haven’t picked up Rolando yet, now is the perfect time to see what all the fuss is about. Read More
Ngmoco has surprised us with some updates. Rolando and its sequel Rolando 2 have both been updated for the iPhone 4's Retina Display and have had a few bug issues fixed. To celebrate the update, they're both on sale for just US$0.99. Either one of these is a bargain at that price. They're both very solid, original platformers, designed specifically for the iOS system. What's most interesting about this, though, is that Ngmoco has updated these at all. Rolando was one of the first big titles for the now gigantic iOS developer, but when Ngmoco moved into the We Rule freemium model, the Rolando series was more or less abandoned in favor of games that could use more microtransactions and attract more "DAUs" (daily active users). A lot of Rolando fans were disappointed with that direction, though Ngmoco's We Rule and other freemium games have seen plenty of success anyway. Rolando Read More
Vocal members of our community have long since written off ngmoco as a lost freemium cause, leaving us hardcore gamers in the dust as they move on to greener (and more casual) free to play pastures. The Rolando series seemed poised to become the Super Mario of the iOS platform when the original Rolando [99¢] hit in in late 2008. In July of 2009, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid [99¢] was released, and is better than the original in every way imaginable. Unfortunately, even though Rolando 3 was announced, poor sales of Rolando 2 combined with the wildly successful freemium-powered Eliminate [Free] seemed to be all ngmoco needed to seemingly give up on the Rolando franchise. Check out the trailer to see what Rolando 2 is all about: With a 99¢ price drop and a Retina Display update, I recommend everyone download Rolando 2, and you might as well Read More
Instead, we've organized our year in review into categories with what we feel is an excellent cross section of games from 2009. By Will on October 16th, 2009 Along with Apple's announcement today that DLC will be allowed in free apps, ngmoco:) has both announced that their upcoming FPS, which looks to feature DLC fairly prominently, will be free and released a free version of Rolando 2 complete with DLC to unlock the full game. Ngmoco will take advantage of Apple’s reversal in decision on allowing DLC in free apps, and they will probably be among the first to do so. First, In conjunction with Apple’s announcement, Ngmoco announced that they will be making their upcoming FPS Eliminate free. The main draw of Eliminate is the thorough online component, with 4-player death match over Wifi or 3G. In the game, you have a certain amount of “energy.” While you are energized, playing online earns you credits, which improve your online ranking and can be used to buy upgrades and armor. However, your energy Read More

Apple recently introduced two new iPod touch models at their exclusive “Rock and Roll” media event, and just to be clear, the two new models are the 32GB and 64GB versions, as the 8GB remains the same as last year.  It was at this event that Apple claimed the new devices were “up to 50 percent faster” than previous generations.  Macworld decided to test the new devices to see if Apple’s claim would hold up. Macworld used a variety of speed tests to gauge the overall performance of the devices.  They first measured the amount of time it took to boot to the home screen.  They then measured how long it took to launch games, such as Peggle, Homerun Battle 3D, and Rolando 2.  They also measured the amount of time it took to load NYTimes.com.  Finally, they utilized the Sunspider Javascript benchmark. Finally!!!
orangemochafrappuccino! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
After a day of waiting for this game, it's finally here! Rolando 2 rolls into itunes with style, with the most anticipated iphone game ever. Ngmoco has put their heart and soul into a game that should please everyone. Rolando was one of the best if not the best iphone game of all time and this sequel sets out to build upon that success. With 45 levels you definately get what you pay for. This is a very fun game and should be bought by all iphone users!
Good but not great
rower99 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
This was a very fun game to play, it flowed well and had a lot of different charachters to enjoy plating with. However there were some issues that make this game, as of right now, not worth 10$. Upsides: great graphics, flowed well, and had a decent story line. Lots of improvement over the first one! One of my chief irritations with the first rolando was that no matter how much you tilted, charachters never managed to go very fast. In this one, though, they made the charachters have a lot of ability to vary speeds and I commend them on that. The 3d graphics are very cool and well done, and the gameplay is similiar to the last one in which you can pick it up, figure it out quickly, and finish a level here and there without having to be totally focused on the game at all times. Vehicles in the game are a good addition, and you can do a lot more such as destroy the enemies in different ways. Downsides: worst part: very short. If you spend any real amount of time in this game you'll be finished in around 3 or 4 days. Unfourtanetly there's little replay value because to be honest, at least for me, going and collecting little crystal things to get "achievement medals" is not that entertaininig. Another issue is the "boss" fight. In short; it's pathetic. All you do is shoot two arrows and a bomb and it's dead. It took me around 2 minutes, and it lefte feeling disappointed. Future update ideas: Level packs Rolandos collaboritive creators have been posting claims all over the Internet that bonus level packs are coming to this game just like the last one. I'm still waiting on those, but hopefully that means it's a big update. More depth! Some levels take like 15 seconds! Hopefully in future level packs it's not the same case. Create a charachter. This is something that wouldake the game have some replay value, perhaps you could include this option if you get all achievement levels or something? Possibly bring back the old charachters. It would be cool to be able to play the retro charachters from the first game, even if it's only in the bonus levels (which will hopefully come in an update) Overall very cool game, but I recommend waiting either for a price drop or update. 3/5
iPhone's Mario, Sonic
Peter Manges 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
ngmoco has emerged as the leader in iPhone gaming and for good reason. Rolando 2 is a brilliant game- not a brilliant iPhone game, not a brilliant mobile game, but a brilliant game period. ngmoco has managed truly and fully to bring the platform genre to iPhone without sacrificing a thing; hilarious characters, killer gameplay, beautiful 3D graphics, and a golden soundtrack make this sequel to last year's Rolando an improvement in every way (and that's saying a lot). I challenge those who call this a knock off of LocoRoco to play the game to see how totally unique it is, unlike the aforementioned game in every way (though the original Rolando did admittedly have a similar look). To those who say that iPhone gaming is little more than a fad, I present this game as Exhibit A to the contrary. Rolando 2 proves iPhone's relevancy as a game platform, justifying the hype and showing what can be done on this device. What Mario and Sonic were to the NES and Genesis, respectively, the Rolando series is to iPhone. Nintendo and Sony- you'd better be scared.
Perfection.
M_Mage 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is perfect, just like the first. It's fun, clever, unique, and looks great. This builds on all the great aspects of the first game but enhances them with things like vehicles and more types of Rolandos. Rolando 2 also has a large array of different characters and a good story to top it off. Easily recommended.
Rolando 2 is simply the best!!
paintwithme 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
ngmoco has done it again! I have never spent so much money on an app but Rolando 2 is definietly worth it. The new effects and overall graphics are stunning. There are more than 45 challenging levels, new combat features and you can challenge your friends to beat your high scores. This is by far the best app on my iPhone, absolutely love it. Stop reading this, and purchase it already.
GREAT!

3D Rolando with new gameplay.
matthiggins 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
ngmoco:) has returned with a sequel that beats the sequel syndrome — this second version is *better* than the first. New theme, new gameplay, new characters, new dimension, new music, and it's all awesome. It may have been a day late, but it's definitely NOT a dollar short. $10 is more than worth it for such a fun game with so much awesome content. Plus, plus+ network is awesome: achievements, challenges — it's Xbox Live meets Facebook. On iPhone.
the best app EVER
AppGuy1312 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
this is a true app store gem. the 3d, many levels, and plus+ network. along with push notifications $9.99 is a small price to pay for the app, because it is lot better then some $50 games for main systems. i hope this becomes one of the most downloaded of all time!
Rolando ruined my life!

I lost my job and just found out that my wife is leaving me because of this game! Simply the best!
Great

Amazing game. I didn't really like the first Rolando, but for some reason, I like this a lot. And to those idiots who complain about it being 3.0 only, READ THE DESCRIPTION first next time. You'll be on 3.0 soon enough anyway, soon it'll be the standard for apps. Great job, Hand Circus Games and ngmoco:) .

Great game and so much game play... its awesome! probally up thr w/ flick fishing and glyder for some of teh best iphone/ipod touch games BUT $9.99 is a little ridiculous for this game... no matter how much game play there is... $9.99 is a little much for me. but if you enjoy hours of game time and very original levels this game is great for killing lots and lots of time!

I have to admit that I have not played the first Rolando but I am truly impressed. I would recoumend this to everyone. I was a little unsure if this was going to be worth the price tag but after playing it, it was well worth money. New update gives it much more smoother gameplay.
Very good

A worthy sequel to Rolando. Hoping the Plus+ network makes it into other non-ngmoco games and integrates with facebook eventually. Could become like the Live network but for iPhones and iPods.
