Running Apps Offer Live Tracking
Calendar16 Sun, 07 Nov 2010 09:39:15 UTC +00:00
posted by D. St. Charles on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 2:39 am.   On Sunday, November 7th, some 30,000 runners will line up to complete the ING NYC marathon. Over 2,000,000 spectators will line the streets of the five boroughs. Supporters can track their runners via text, web or mobile app. But you don’t have to run in the big leagues to enjoy the support of family and friends your next race day or even your next long run. Recent features added to iMapyMyRun and RunKeeper allow users to track runners and posts distances, paces and times directly to Facebook. Auto-route recording, web site integration for recording workouts and social networking updates are fairly common aspects of several fitness apps.  What sets iMapMyRun and Run Keeper Live is the ability to send real-time updates to the web and social networks. Both apps essentially act the same for live tracking, displaying a Google Read More

Apple bike computer patent surfaces
Calendar16 Thu, 05 Aug 2010 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
My Polar CS200 bicycle computer is one of the few standalone gizmos my iPhone hasn't replaced yet. Hooked up wirelessly to sensors on my bike and a chest strap, the CS200 gives me data on speed, cadence, distance, pace, and heart rate during my daily rides. My current bike computer gets the job done, but I've often wished for a fuller-featured solution, especially since Polar's computers aren't able to sync with Macs without using third-party software, some of which is pretty expensive. Patently Apple has just discovered a 2009 Apple patent which would turn an iPhone or iPod into the bike computer of my dreams. The patent shows an iPod (amusingly, the third-gen "fat nano") standing in for a bike computer and accepting the same sort of data as my current Polar computer, like speed, cadence, heart rate, and so on. But the patent also shows much more interesting features like Read More

Eric | Sep 2, 2009 User rating: ( votes, average: out of 5)  Loading ... If you enjoy running and have an iPhone, than you likely have heard of RunKeeper from FitnessKeeper, the GPS assisted training app for runners.   It tracks and uploads training runs to the  RunKeeper website in addition to keeping a history of runs within the app.  An feature packed Free version is extremely popular in the App Store.   The Pro version adds a few key features, but are they worth the $10 upgrade? Tracking a run is easy with this app.  It took about 20-30 seconds from when the app was launched on my iPhone 3G to obtain a good or excellent GPS signal.  From there, all you have to do is hit the green “start” button and go.  The simple approach to this app is welcomed, as there  isn’t many options to configure are Read More
RunKeeper + iPhone: Better than Nike + iPod?
Calendar16 Fri, 10 Jul 2009 19:06:00 UTC +00:00
RunKeeper provides useful info as you run, then uploads it to the RunKeeper site. Can I gush? RunKeeper is the coolest freakin' iPhone application ever. OK, maybe not for everyone, but it's definitely the coolest for runners, hikers, bikers, and anyone else interesting in tracking their outdoor activities. Let me explain. This summer the running bug bit me hard, and I'm now running farther and faster than in years past. Consequently, I've grown interested in determining my pace, distance, total run time, and so on. My first thought was to get Apple's Nike + iPod, which is reasonable at $29--but incompatible with my iPhone 3G. Plus, I didn't want to have to buy a pair of Nike+ shoes or "hack" the Apple sensor to latch onto my own shoes. Quite by accident, I discovered RunKeeper Free, which leverages the iPhone's built-in GPS to track duration, distance, pace, speed, and more. All Read More

This App works Really Well ... Supports my Data Obsession
Pben 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I have used RunKeeper Free for about 4 weeks and it works really well in our 3g poor area in the heart of Silicon Valley - go figure. I run all over this regional park next to the SF Bay including hills, dirt and paved trails. Even though I've had it cut it, it never loses the route. I like the web based storage and I like the fact that the developers are busy with a new version, taking in requests from their growing base. I plan on upgrading to Pro when the next release comes out since now I'm hooked on all the good data it provides.
A Waste of Time
Super-G-Money 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
After losing my iPod Nano with the Nike+ receiver I resorted to this application. I'm sorry I wasted my time. The application left me with 10% battery life remaining, and half way into the run I checked my progress only to find it was starting over. Running the app and music simultaneously used the entire battery on a 50 minute run. You could resolve this issue by not listening to music or running shorter distances. Also, even though I locked the app before putting in my pocket, it was easily unlocked and I lost half my 5 mile run. On the positive side the information it did give was accurate. I've run this route many of times and I am confident in the data, but if you’re not getting all the data, it’s superfluous. I’m going to break down and replace my Nano/ Nike+.
They lied...
T1906 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
They told past paid users we would get access to the updated paid app. They lied. New free app keeps quitting after the many commercials.
YOU WILL LOVE THIS
RAYDAR6 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I really like the 1 min interval graph. I like the program so much I donated $10 to product development. I gave 5 stars but would like you to add voice interval updates as well as calories burned. Website is wonderful as well. Very accurate numbers.
what a joke
rk12 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Why should I buy an upgraded version when the free ver does not work. You mean the RunKeeper quits tracking your progress when you use your phone??? How cool is thay???
Pretty Cool
The Spikeman 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I downloaded this program with a lot of interest but was skeptical about how well it would work. I know that the iPhone is a GPS "assisted" location device so the GPS signal is not always that strong. With that being said, the program has worked very well so far. It accurately distanced my run which I checked on google earth. It syncs with a website and show you how much you have run, biked, walked, or skiied in that month. It also estimates how must you were going. The biggest factor will probably be how good the GPS reception is where you exercise. Its free so try it out.
Awesome GPS app for athletes
Josh_in_Tampa 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I can say without hesitation that this simple and efficient application beats the Nike+ application hands down in my opinion. I took it out for my run tonight and it was everything I needed in a tracking application for the iPhone. The web based dashboard and it's graphical interface are top notch! Get it!
Signal?
Atari81 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
My mapped jog says I jogged 5 miles from my actual location. I am using 3G. What's going on?
Gee
Danewill 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
Ok, I paid for this, but now it was turn into lite, not going to pay again to get pro because I had bad problems like no data, GPS would start some two away draw a straight line and add it to my 5 mile run. But the good thing about this app, it made me look for another and I found the best one, RUNNER , once you used it and figure it out you will love it, don't ease your money on this one
Great GPS for running
VprWzl 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
I love this program. It let's me use a running tracker, iPod, and emer cell phone all in one. It works thru my running suit pocket - now I don't have to get a garmin.
This update makes this a great app
Pop85 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
I have only used this program once, but the info it gave me was extremely accurate. The route was right on, and the pace was probably pretty close (though I thought I was running a little faster, I guess I wasn't :P) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS before your first run, if you don't follow the directions exactly, you probably wont get good results. Yes, this did kind of drain my battery, but worth it considering the alternative is a $400 GPS watch. Definitely satiates my need for lots of running stats, and map! Uploaded to the website and displays perfectly. Very excited.
Very Pleased
ActiveSD 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I don't know why people are making negative comments. I used it on a 45 minute run with my music playing and I still had half my battery life. It posted elevation, speed, accurate location, and shared everything online including to Facebook seamlessly. It also calculated calories and had options for hiking which I will try next. Nice free app. Just lock your phone to save battery life or reduce your brightness settings.
Great app
Aokusman 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
This is a very good app, even with it's limitation. I was using imapmyrun before this, but prefer runkeeper as it works without a data connection. It's really a simple app for us non big time runners. Keep it up.
Skiing ?
PerryKing 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Skiing ? : Battery goes dead in 3 and a half hours. Bring auxilliary battery or AC charge at lunch in the ski lodge.
a TINY bit off, but great overall
rabt 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I've used this app to track my same run every day for the past few weeks and it's been fairly accurate but is sometimes off within +/- 0.1mi... it's not much, more of a tiny annoyance than anything... the same run should wield the same results right? I'm not sure if that's a problem with the app or the iPhones GPS itself because sometimes the map shows me cutting across the lake by my house (I obviously can't really run on water!). I do like how you can check everything on your computer and have the option to make each individual run public so you can show off your quickest times! one thing I would like to see is a pause button so you can hit pause while you're stopped (i.e. at street lights and such) and resume it once you resume your run. it's terribly annoying to have one run divided up into separate segments or to have your overall time substantially raised and average pace lowered by stops that you had no control over!
BY FAR THE BEST APP (free or @ a fee) for tracking ones runs
Dj Naz-e 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
I've used it for over a week and found the app to be extremly motivating and well functioning
Love it
HMMC76 4.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
It's great that you're able to keep track of your runs or walks with this. It shows a map of where you went. The only thing is that it keeps the application running and doesn't auto lock...meaning lots of battery life. Other than that, I would say it's great. Don't need to buy a GPS watch anymore with this.
Runkeeper is the Real Deal for Keeping Track of your Hike/Bike/Walk/Run
Altoids Man 5.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
If you want to track your bike ride, run, walk or hike then this is for you. Easy to use, keeps track of your fitness program or maps your hike in the wilderness. Even share your results online. This tool has improved my exercise program! I tried the others (e.g., iMapMyRide) but this was the best of the group. I support RunKeeper!
Forget the Garmin
CrabbyGeek 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I used this app back when there was only a free version, but it's still just as good and continues to get better all the time.
Awesome gps app!!!
Elika108 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
By far the best gps running app out there. Also, this is the only gps app that lets you put the iphone to sleep with the phone sleep button (as long as you have itunes playing, it won't stop tracking your run.)I originally purchased a garmin forerunner, but promptly returned it after a few runs with this. Would love to see calories and photo options ( as mentioned in other reviews)and can't wait until the pro version is released.
Sweet!
edmcc 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Does everything I need it to do. I really like the lock screen feature. I run and bike with it.
Junk
Tjfla10 1.0 stars Version: 1.2.1
Never got this to work....tried repeatedly and no results...frustrating
Inaccurate on first run
Indigopurls 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
My first Run had huge blank spots in the map and it read that I ran 1.5 miles when I had run 5.
Great motivation!
Joedustin 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
Since I started using this app, it gets me off the treadmill so I can see what my stats are, and mapping my route is fun. The app doesn't always draw a line on the map to trace my route. In some cases all I get are mile markers. Also, I would like something more in the pro version to make it worth 9.99. I know SDK does not allow for background run, but maybe a next song button so I don't have to close the app to change a song?
Works well, but...
rhenton 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
I was interested in using it for walking (4-5) hours, not running - and it's far too much of a battery drain.
Love it!!!
scott-e-karate 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
The people who are rating this app poorly must live/run in areas with poor gps reception! It tells you before you begin how strong your signal is. I love that it gave me such a detailed report of my run including time splits and elevation withing the splits, pace and a mapping of each mile of my workout. This app is really going to help me get back into shape!
Easily the best app out there
obelix74 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
I really like RunKeeper. Liked it enough that I purchased the pro version. I have a few thousand words review comparing this with other applications here. http://bit.ly/Zc3U.
Runkeeper review
Runnerphil 4.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
Love this app. Start it, run, forget about it, run is tracked. GPS has been great. Like the simple web site that tracks everything. Also has a simple setup for posting through twitter onto FB.
Big fan
timuchen 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
Very easy to set up and use. Agree w all the reviews. I also like the website to view run summaries. I would recommend a lap button, not just a start/stop and pause, but otherwise perfect. Any runner will love this.
AWESOME!!!
Jking8 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
I love this app! By far the most valuable one I've downloaded. I strongly reccommend it to everyone.
Great app, even greater potential
snorecal 4.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
This app accurately mapped a 1.5 mile test run I just did, so the mapping and distance measurement was not a problem. I loved that it automatically uploaded the info from my run as soon as I was finished. The web-based history tracking is very cool and I look forward to using it to watch my running times improve. A feature I would like: Ghost runner (race against my best previous time with audio cues - would upgrade to pro for this).
Way Cool
BriMaz 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.8
I have the free version. It works great. I ran in a five mile race and the display at the end of the race was 5.00mi. It does not get much more accurate than that. I really can't say enough good things about RK Free. It is the kind of APP that makes having an iPhone so great. It is both useful and way cool at the same time. I like the program so much that became a RK fan on Facebook (I suppose the fan thing was a bit much).
Good app - but NO iTunes - hence useless
MisterAlex2009 1.0 stars Version: 1.4.8.2
It's a great app, but it cannot be used together with iTunes. Big big bummer!!! I really need music so this app is useless for me. Hope the developers figure out a way to do that. For now, I uninstalled the app ... :-(
So far so good...
AlwaysAtTheGroceries 4.0 stars Version: 1.4.8.2
If tried it only once but it works as advertised and fairly well. I love the map that's drawn out with your trail after you run. I'm only a bit wary of the pace I'm running because it seemed like I was running faster than displayed but isn't that what we all think? :) Unlike others who may not know the limitations of the way the iPhone and software works, I know that it's a limitation of the iPhone to not let you go to the iPod function and pick another playlist for example. If you know about operating your music using the home button while it's playing, then this shouldn't be a problem for you. You just need to start your music first with the right playlist and then you can control the songs in that playlist using the home button. Also, again due to the way the iPhone works, you have to have the app running and can't lock your phone once you start the App. So this really drains your battery and could cause your iPhone to die on a long run if you're not starting out with a good charge. Maybe with OS 3.0 these items can be addressed. I HOPE! All in all I'm pleasantly surprised. Keep the updates coming to make it even better.
Simply amazing
X98bak 5.0 stars Version: 1.4.8.2
I was about to buy a 300$ gps watch from garmin and thought "hmmm I wonder if there is an app for that". Sure enough there was. I dowloaded the free version and tracked my first run today. Even though I didn't need too the pro version was the first app I paid for to support this amazing app. Developers did a great job. This app just paid for the phone. Finally this app makes you want to run more, faster, and take new routes. Best app on iPhone by FAR!
Kills the battery in 2 hours, distances measured are way off
afadeev 2.0 stars Version: 1.4.8.2
I really wanted to like this app and buy Pro version, but 3 major deficiencies have kept me from doing so:
Tracks nicely ... Then get lost. Edit on web makes rk ok
b3nkt 1.0 stars Version: 1.5.0.7.3
12 runs in May w 4 completly off. They were all possible to fix on web. Wish The edits would sync w iphone. The start/pause/resume/stop should be one large button see how it's done in "iTalk" It is easy to get started. Starts and display miles and pace as well as speed. I run with iPhone in my left hand so by locking the screen it is easily readable.. But first after rotating it. For 4miles all appear to work fine. Then the speed is displaying 200mph... And keyboard pops up at some point. When home after 5+ mi it will not find location.. Start all out at whole world view... But eventually it does. analysing the data it appears to be very accurate on the road for the first 3.5mi then position is off a 100ft to the east for about 2mi.... And speed is off for about 0.4 mi. Track is fairly consisten with a few trees but clear view of sky. Useless! if it not consistently correct. This may be phone or gps and not runKeeper but result is useless. If this is fixed then i suggest The web has nice functions, great to see elevation and interactive pace along the route - make stop button larger when running. - make resume button larger when at pause -turn off wifi with application i.e. Make sure that is off (if needed.. Not seen any difference) - make lock pref to keep horisontal or left or roght rotation - make it easier to see that the run was sent/uploaded to web - call a run a run ... i. e. Not trip
Used to work
Run2007 1.0 stars Version: 1.5.0.7
I loved the app before I upgraded, now it won't work. Buttons lockup, and it won't even start a run. Wait for them to fox the bugs before you upgrade.
Don't upgrade yet
LesMcP 2.0 stars Version: 1.5.0.7
After upgrade on July 9, app freezes every time. Great experience until now. Do not upgrade until bugs fixed.
Next to Flawless
nubz0r 5.0 stars Version: 1.6.0.10
Just used this app for the first time tonight and it worked incredibly. I strongly believe that those who experience problems with it are simply having problems with their iPhones/GPS signal. The application itself works perfectly. If you cannot sustain good GPS signal in your area, don't blame the application nor the developers. I'll use the free version for a few more runs, but plan on upgrading to pro here shortly. Amazing application. Get it; you won't be disappointed.
