App Review: Tactical Soldier – Undead Rising
Calendar16 Tue, 24 May 2011 00:15:45 UTC +00:00
posted by Joe Rossignol on Monday, May 23, 2011 at 5:15 pm.   Chess was known as the board game of wars in the old days. Chess has been around for ages; it was even used for strategy and technique in actual battles. However, we don’t battle with knights and castles anymore. The world has advanced in technology, including weaponry and tactics. aims to recreate what Chess was once used for, except for modern times — at least that’s what it feels like. The game offers a strategic gameplay, great graphics, superb audio, little replay value, and a good bang for your buck. Catch the review after the break. This game is an action adventure, or at least that’s what the screen shots would tell you. However, it is only half of that. It is an adventure game, but action really isn’t the right word. Could it be action-packed? Yes. Is Read More
Last night Chillingo's WackyLands Boss [99¢] hit the App Store, and turned gaming on its head by allowing you to quite literally play as the boss, slaying hordes of innocent knights, archers, wizards, and more leaving nothing but destruction in your wake. To sweeten the deal, you're not stuck with one boring old boss to play as either. Your boss is incredibly customizable with even more customization that unlocks as you play through the game. Only one control option is included, and every action in the game is performed via tapping or swiping gestures. For instance, holding one side of the screen causes your boss to walk that way, tapping in a direction executes a quick attack, and swiping in a direction performs a slower but more powerful swing. Rolling to evade is accomplished by swiping up on either side of the screen, and picking up in-game objects involves swiping up Read More

Developer MadFinger Games has just announced a followup to the popular hack 'n slash title Samurai: Way of the Warrior. We reviewed the game when it was released in September of last year and found it to be an incredibly stylish (and incredibly difficult) action game with intuitive swipe controls. With plenty of awards and high review marks from around the web, as well as three quarter of a million copies downloaded, a sequel to Samurai seems like a no-brainer. Yesterday MadFinger started a thread in our upcoming games forum to dish out some new info and screens from the upcoming sequel, titled Samurai II: Vengeance. Here is the info straight from the developer, along with some work-in-progress screens from the iPad version (click for full size): Samurai II: Vengeance is slated to be released this September for 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch, iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, and iPad. Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Monday, July 12, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to the latest edition of Small Apps + Updates, our column designed for quick looks at recent app releases and updates. This week’s Small Apps looks at nine titles ranging from games to communications and reference tools. Our top pick of the bunch is the latest version of Fring. Read on for all the details. Normally, we’d consider including Villain LLC’s new first-person shooter Archetype ($3, version 1.0.5) in an iPhone Gems roundup, but after playing it for a bit, we didn’t think there was enough in the gameplay department to warrant even a two-paragraph review… yet. What Villain has come up with is the basis for a really solid shooter, including a silky-smooth 3-D engine with iPhone 4-ready, high-resolution graphics—unfortunately downscaled on the iPad, prior iPhones, and iPod touches—and a streamlined set Read More

Truly innovative
aloepar1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Just like Spider, the game mechanics are such that they can only be done using the iphone/itouch, keeping a perfect balance between accessibility and depth. The controls are very intuitive, but the combo combinations, the way the difficulty ramps up, and the scenery changes keep the game fresh and prevent it from being repetitive and boring.
Breath taking
Maythius 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wonderful game; a few glitches here and there, but absolutely worth the price of admission.
The liquid sword of the iPhone
adbjmb 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Amazing art style and nice game play with heads popping off left and right. Fans of samurai and kung fu flicks will like this. Lots of combos to master and comic book style story make this a good buy.
Superb
FrenchFrie 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This one really took me by surprise. I've just completed the game and I must say it's easily one of the best games on the app store. Amazing graphics, a well composed and authentic score, with quite a good story to boot (told through well illustrated comic book style vignettes - think Max Payne). And the controls really pay off once you figure out how it's done. There's nothing quite landing a three hit combo that concludes with your enemy splitting into two pieces as blood gushes on the screen. Oh yes, this game is violent. There's a main story mode that takes about 3-5 hours to complete your first time through, and a survival-like Dojo mode, where you battle increasingly difficult waves of enemies in an arena. Overall, there's plenty of content. You'll most likely enjoy playing through the main game more than once - considering the gameplay is so enjoyable.
Samurai bidness
Urdopeoldskewler 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The way it's told reminds me of sin city or a 300 type of game, great illustrations and I like the cell shaded graphics. Lots of blood (makes me wonder why the rating says it's meant for 9 year olds, nice combos (could use some more though) and great gameplay, very innovative. They should make a part 2 with 2 player and more combos and added features...I would have bought this for 10 bucks!! A must buy
A lot of problems
arch Lord Jango 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
First, the pros: Great graphical style Looks cool when you cut guys in half Nice blood splatter Now the cons (most become bothersome later in the game): Too hard to dodge The enemy will break your combo WHILE you are attacking Some combos don't work (more advanced ones) Too hard to single out guards to avoid being ganged up on Grammar mistakes in cut scenes (it's not an even old way of speaking, it's a bad translation or something) Once these are fixed, I will give the game 5 stars.
Amazing App- A Hidden Gem, Great Slash controls, Great Game!
Wheatie32 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
You're reading this deciding whether to click buy? DO IT! THIS GAME is Amazing!! It is unique and like nothing else in the app store. It is the whole package with: - great controls (take a little getting used to) - amazing music - 3D like graphics - very fun game play I've downloaded over 190 apps and have about 125 now on my iPhone. This one is my favorite! This is only the 2nd review I've ever written on an app. I hope this independent app developer makes it big like the 'Spider at Bryce Mansion' did. If you liked that game and the unique nothing like it game play you'll love this! Give it a try, it's a steal at $2.99.
Brilliant
Touch This!! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The graphics are fantastic, the game is innovative...this is truly a wonderful piece of art!
iPhone Gaiden
Psycho Mantis 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
A lone samuri, breathless from battle, walks away from the band of mercenaries he has slain. He flings his sword free of blood, sheaths it and continues his journey... That basically sets the tone of the game. It's not quite as frantic and aerobatic as the newer Ninja Gaiden games but it has a similar combo-based gameplay. By swiping to swing your sword you attack. By doing certain moves quickly in succession, you do a combo. By killing enough enemies you learn more and they are easily stored in a menu so you can look them up if you forget. The graphics are done in a style kind of like Feudal Japanese paintings and the animations are smooth. Certain moves will even decapitate or slice an enemy in half. Again, it's not quite as over the top as NG but definately satisfying. Cutscenes are done in a comic book style and are pretty well written even with a couple of instances of Engrish. There is also a survival mode where you fight waves of enemies untill you lose. The game really is quite impressive and at $2.99 it's a great deal.
Kill Bill Approved!
xHALFRICANx 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Of your done beating Alive 4-Ever... Then your next stop as a skilled iPhone assassin is SAMURAI! Controls have a bit if a learning curve, but once you've obtained a "black belt" in controls it's heads rollin and bodies splittin adventure! Worth the price and worth every star! The comic like story background is a pleasent addition to it's arsenal of great features (music, blood, story, and Samurainess) Hot hot hot!
Innovative
EvilGeese 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
The app store is clogged with homogenous games that differ only in the way they look. 'Samurai' breaks the mold and ventures out on it's own. The controls take practice, and can be unpredictable at times, but they're still the most innovative use of the touch screen so far. The graphics are excellent, the comic book cut scenes are well done (if not a bit awkward in translation), and the gameplay is addicting. The simple pleasure of getting a combo right and seeing an opponent slide apart in two gory pieces makes it well worth the $2.99 download price. Though I'd like to see some updates (perhaps different weapons or health pick-ups), this is everything an iPhone hack-and-slash game should be.
Superb.
Gymboy60302 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game shows that an intense action game on the Iplatform is possible. It has great controls that hardly ever fail along with some truly stylilized gory gameply that is just fun to play as it is brautiful to watch. Developers need to take example from this game and start making more touch oriented games made from the ground up like this little gem. My only wish for this game is that would go More in depth in gameplay and maybe add a little more story in updates. The first thing I thought of when playing this game was Zelda and the phantom hour glass for the ds. And then I thought of ninja gaiden dragon sword! That's how spot on the controls are for this game! Tthese developers have already done the hard part and set a solid foundation for what could be the genre that so many iPhone fans have been waiting for. Now all you devs have to do is expand on it! Tighten up the controls for pinpoint precision fast oases action like ninja gaiden and then toss in more in depth level designs with puzzles and more of a story ala phantom hour glass. Seriously thank you to the devs for proving that this genre is possible.
Crazy Hack & Slash
The Bat Outta Hell 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
One of the best games on the iPod, and is only $2.99! Excellent story, art, action, controls, and gameplay. An absolute must have.
Refreshing and addictive
WFEJM6 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is a wonderful game. The art design and intuitive gameplay/interface combined with storyboard animation make this a real treat. I rarely write reviews on here, but thought this one deserved it. It lasted me about 1-2 hours so don't be expecting a very long game. However, you'll be thoroughly enjoying yourself the entire way through. It's perfectly set up for a sequel and I for one can't wait to buy it. I think the author just wanted to see if it was well received before he/she poured any more development into the project so hopefully the good press and reviews will give us something a bit longer and more polished. My main gripes: Too short, difficulty needs to be tweaked (bosses were way too easy), fighting mechanics could be made a bit more sophisticated... ie. chaining of attacks, dodging, blocking, etc..
Great title!
Czarro0311 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I absolutely love this game. It reminds me of ninja gaiden on the ds. This game has some of the most original graphics I've ever seen on an idevice. This game is gonna be a sleeper hit. My only gripe, is that there's a little bit of lagging here and there. Nothing to bad. Fix this and it's an instant five star rating.
pretty damn good
SuWub 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
if u like samurai or hack n slash I'm sure I'll like this game. the graphics are nice, not superb but it is just nice thru out the game. I really love the comic story telling inbetween stages, the games length is perfect for the games depth BUT I hope the dev will update his game with more elements like levling, spend points on different stats/ health n ultimate moves. definitlu a 5+ star game if the developer adds more elements to it with an extended story. great game tho!
What?!?
RetroJames 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Wow. Where'd this game come from? I don't write many reviews, but with this game, I had to. This game is not only tons of fun, but the art style rocks. Almost reminds me of Okami. The sound effects remind me of kurosawa chanbara flicks. The controls work incredibly well - it's hard to imagine body positioning/swipe mechanics working so seamlessly together, but these guys did it, and did it well. 5 stars - all the way. Can someone say sequel? Like, right now?
Good potential, TERRIBLE execution
Duke DemonKnight 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Ok, I'm mad as hell i listened to all the good reviews on here. Thus game is monotonous, overpriced, and just does not deliver any lasting fun. The only good thing about it is it looks sort of cool. The controls barely work because you're obscuring the view of your character. The attacks you have are basically all the same. There's no apparent logic to when you slice a guy in half or when you have to sit there wailing on him for forever to kill him. All the bosses are exactly the same, just skinned differently; for that matter there's no real difference between the regular enemies and the bosses besides that the bosses have more health. The only cool thing about this game is that you can chop off peoples' heads, but that wears thin after the third time. DO NOT PURCHASE!!! This game is a complete snooze fest, and if you've played thirty seconds of it you've basically played the whole game. I wish I could give this turkey negative four stars, the only way it doesn't get negative five is it has a cool decapitation animation
Garbage, Crap, and Regret
2kittens1cup 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
DO NOT BUY!!! Its just terrible. Horrible controls and bad sound effects. It's GARBAGE. It's also made with the unity game engine. That should be the first clue as to how bad this is. AVOID IT.
Wow
vidiot.el 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This game is hands down one of the best games on the iPhone period. Great hack and slash and I'm stoked to see a developer make a game like this that doesn't use fake buttons for controls. If you want blood, guts and a polished game buy this.
Wonderful game!!
Harpua108 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow, what at awesome game. You gotta love these indie developers that are releasing super imaginative games!!! Keep up the good work guys!
This game defines beauty
h0130j03 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I only played the first chapter and I must say the game is absolutely beautiful! The comic style was a nice choice! I have a suggestion for future updates. How about a duel mode over wifi? And I don't mean LAN, I mean online. Well that's my two cents, great game guys! Hope to see more!
Awesome!
Paulywogg 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
