Calendar16 Thu, 10 Feb 2011 17:10:19 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/10/2011 at 9:10am | by Andrew Groen There's officially no good reason to pay more than 99 cents for any game on the App Store this month. We always thought Valentine's Day was the kind of holiday that specialized more in cheap pink teddy bears than smartphone software, but apparently we were wrong. The past couple of weeks have been positively flooded with huge iOS video game sales from major publishers, and now Sega, Capcom, and Namco are getting in on the action. Some of their very best games are included so check out the full list. Listen up, fellas and ladies, sure you could go to the shop this Valentine's Day and get your special someone a ho-hum set of bad flowers and some fluffy pink polyester that will be sure to make them feel completely average. Or you could surprise them with an onslaught of totally awesome games Read More

SEGA Slashes Prices On The App Store, Too
Calendar16 Wed, 09 Feb 2011 17:48:57 UTC +00:00
OK. So, SEGA is following suit with the other big publishers on the App Store and is now holding its own personal deal-a-thon. Now, until whenever, you can grab around 16 different SEGA games for 80 percent off the usual price or just 99 cents. And we’re not just talking about the pub’s stable of lackluster Genesis ports getting the cut here; those games are part of the deal, for sure, but there’s also a few native gems mixed in. There are too many games to do a meaningful breakdown with, but here’s a list of what’s being offered and the prices of each: Not bad, eh? At this point, I’m not sure if we should say that the entire App Store is up for grabs, but it’s getting close as all these publishers start racing to the bottom. Who knew that Valentine’s Day would be giving us so much this Read More

Sega's 'Columns Deluxe' Free for 4th of July Weekend
Calendar16 Sat, 04 Jul 2009 21:08:21 UTC +00:00
If you owned a Sega console in the 90's, Columns Deluxe [App Store] will be a complete blast from the past. Originally the only game worth playing that I owned for my Game Gear, I've probably spent more time over the years in Columns than any other match three. Columns has appeared in several classic arcade collection games in recent generation consoles. And the original, as well as its sequels have been ported to nearly every other video game console in one form or another before finally winding up on the App Store. There's no reason not to take advantage of the 4th of July Sale and download Columns Deluxe while it's free. Although, the experience may not quite be the same as it was on the Game Gear without needing to constantly be swapping through six AA batteries to play for more than an hour or two at a time. Jul 3rd 2009 at 7:30PM To all who say the controls suck: Turn off the accelerometer and then read the tutorial. I'm pretty sure that the games weren't actually enhanced with touchscreen control - the emulator is just designed to interpret MBP-style screen swipes (anywhere on the screen) as the D-pad, and touches as buttons depending on what half of the screen you touch. I bought this game last year when the App Store opened. It's okay, but there are far better puzzle games available like EA's Tetris, Trism and Tatomic. It's worth a look for free, but I wouldn't buy it again. Mainly because of the already mentioned poor porting. That seems to be a pattern for SEGA games by the way. @Twitter: I don't use it because I don't get the point of it. However, I view all my RSS feeds in the reader application "Times". Is there any Read More
'Sonic the Hedgehog' - Sega Returns!
Calendar16 Thu, 21 May 2009 05:24:43 UTC +00:00
Over the past few months, iPhone gamers have all been wondering what in the world happened to Sega. They released Super Monkey Ball [App Store], then Columns Deluxe [App Store] not too long after, and then just disappeared until tonight when Sonic the Hedgehog [App Store] was finally released--Surprising us all. There have been some good ports for the iPhone and some bad ports for the iPhone. Sonic the Hedgehog safely lies somewhere in the middle. The default display mode for the game stretches the screen to fit the aspect ratio of the iPhone and overlays a transparent D-Pad on one side and matching transparent button to jump on the other. This not only makes the game look slightly blurry, but in my testing with an iPhone 3G resulted in frame rates which are less than desirable for a game that is all about going fast. Fortunately, Sega included a second Read More

Needs tremendous polish
joshuag 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
While you may have loved this game on your cell phone, game gear, or genesis, you're not likely to love it on the touch/iPhone.
Huge waste of money!
American Ronin 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
Even at $5.00 it's not worth it. This is nothing but a half baked port of what were originally two excellent and fun games.
Don't Buy. This is just a bad cellphone port.
chookalana 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
Sega dropped the ball on this one. This is just a port of different cellphone games. The graphics, playability and audio are not what one should expect from an iPhone game. Think the opposite of Super Monkey Ball......
Huge Disappointment
Sparky McMuffin 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
For such old games I am stunned how poorly they were ported to play on the iPhone, a system far more powerful than any console these two games once appeared on. Sluggish game play, no saved states, missing SFX...any fan of the games will need to count on nostalgia to help them overlook the poor game experience. I felt that I wasted my $5. You will, too.
Poor
TPALTony 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
This is barely playable. The touch screen controls are hard to use and often misinterpret what you are trying to do. In the lower levels you can just about get away with it, but ultimately you won't be able to cope with it. If it were free I wouldn't play it. It is NOT worth $5. I bought it after the joy that was Super Monkey Ball. This seems like an attempt to just make some more money off the back of SMB without putting any time or effort into it. Bad showing by SEGA.
Notably Improved Due to Patches
bizitmappu 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
The game previously was irritatingly, unplayably slow. Sega recently patched it to use the iPhone/iPod touch's onboard java setup as opposed to running it through cpu, and the speed jump (which is BIG) and addition of sound effects really help the game a lot. I was regretting the purchase until this patch.
Why is everyone complaining?
Canduci 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
I don't see why everyone regrets buying this app. It's addicting and has a good price. I realize there was an update recently, but this is probably my favorite game next to Super Monkey Ball. SEGA and bootant.com make the BEST apps...in my opinion anyway!
Junk
First and Only 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
This is horrible. Do not spend your money on this. Horrible controls, sluggish movements using touch and bad use of the iPhones movement features. The visuals seem a tad off as well. Navigating the menus is a pain. Sega needs to step up and update this into a worthy purchse.
DO not buy
Hfidek 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
Those used to be great but that version is far from the original It's slowwwwww And The graphics are horible Do not spend your 5 bucks for that Sorry sega try again
Just a bad port
Berko88 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
This could have been a great experience on the iPhone, but instead, they seem to have put no effort into making this game any good. I hated it within a minute of playing it.
This is the WORST "paid app" EVER. Shame on you, SEGA!
unten44 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.14
This is the WORST "paid app" EVER. The game runs choppy and has a poor interface. This is NOT what I expected from SEGA.
Missed oportunity
Genesismaster 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Turn off the accelerometer and the game plays... More reasonably, still sucky. But good if you love columns! Seta needs to add some lens flares or something to make the game POP more :(
colums delux
wmscorey 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.11
I was excited about the new purchase, but there are no directions for new gamers.
Meh.
Indigo Rush 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Puyo Pop is a fantastic game. When not played on this platform.
two classics in need of their original features
semifamous 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Columns and Puyo Pop were amazing games and even this poor port of them is quite enjoyable. Having owned Columns for the Sega Master System (the first video game that was ever truly mine), I'm disappointed to see this version is so much simpler with a bland presentation and lack of options. Sega please add the original gem shattering sound effect! The original also offered three songs to choose from, as well as different objects besides gems such as dice and fruit- choices also sadly absent from this port. I also miss the city backdrop that has been replaced by a boring brick pattern. Please Sega, add the original features we remember and love!
Iffy
The Thnikkaman 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Looks and plays like a slap-dash port from a cell phone. Touch control works pretty well, the only issue being accidental rotations. Accelerometer control not so much. Music sounds mediocre compared to the Genesis versions. Visuals leave much to be desired. Basically, it's Columns and puyo-puyo. If you like the games (like me) and can adapt to the somewhat wonky controls, 2 dollars isn't bad at all. Mind you they look the same as the 15+ year old Genesis titles.
Needs big improvement
NBCresendo 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
I am a hardcore Puyo Puyo fan. That being said, this review will only reflect on that game. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. The contols weren't too good and it was diffulcult in the later stages. The sound could be heavily improved starting with the music. There is only one song which gets repetitive. You also don't here the normal *cling* when you pop the puyos. Finally, the graphics were decent. I really miss though the picture of your opponent in the middle of the screen. Overall, the product wasn't too great, but the game us just so awesome, it still is fun.
very good
puszek77 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
very fast, original music from sega columms and game play is very nice .
Fix the controls and you have an awesome game
red_star 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
I used to play this game when it was called Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche for genesis and snes respectively. Its funny because each level is still played exactly the same by the cpu.
Old school gameplay
blaine00 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
I don't understand the bad reviews. People are being way too hard on this game. It basically plays like the Genesis versions but with slightly enhanced graphics. The controls take a little getting used to but I find them quite easy to use. I love the classic music but I am hoping to see all three of the classic songs make it in. Also, please fix that disappearing jew sound effect. I want to hear the old sound in place of that 'beep'. 2 bucks for two great games. I can't complain.
Fix Controls
Zukie8082 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Accellerometer controls for Puyo POP! are JUMPY but alternate system isn't much better. Tapping the sides of the screen for direction and center to rotate would make more sense. 5 Stars when they're updated.
Not like on the Genesis
MadiganLabRat 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Controls are too erratic to make this game worth playing. Not pleased. I would ask for my $2 back to apply toward Golden Axe, but I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Don't buy...not old school...just crappily made!
Disappointed! Remake this Sega!
Designer Nate 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
I have to say I do enjoy the columns iteration better that the puyo pop version of this game. And I get it, it's the classic version of this game... But really the iPhone is much more capable than this I mean this really looks poorly put together come on sega I really like Puyo Pop you have a really fun puzzle game on your hands that could be addictively fun on the iPhone as well.. I really wish the controlls were more fleshed out... I mean take what you learned from puyo pop ds and apply it to this platform. I would much rather have a brand new puyo pop / columns game made just for the iPhone than this sub par port... Heck you even see a glitchy screen at the beginning like it's loading off an emulator or something.. Overall dissappointed.. Avoid!!
Free
Donalds5 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Can't turn down a free sega game ^_*
Seriously???
tpn14 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Sega, YOU MADE SUPER MONKEY BALL FOR THE iPhone AND iPod touch! You showed the world how great the iPhone and iPod touch controls can be with the accelerometer. What the F••K were you all thinking when you designed this??? It took me until the 3rd game to figure out that I had to tilt up and down to move. Now why would a game like this not use touch controls? Plus, you have to flick through the options. I just now figured that out. No tapping for you on this game. Now also, I honestly don't give a s#!t that you're going for the "classic" look. If you are, then make it with the virtual controls, like Sonic! I got this for FREE and I deleted it. And get rid of your freaking funeral music, too! God, that game is HORRIBLE!
Free for the 4th
ripleyr1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
Can't beat getting something for free.
Sega needs to file for chapter 11.
pachi72 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.26
After downloading this turd. Horrible sounds, graphics are horrendous, the resolution is insulting and the control is as bad as trying to pee in a bucket while in a moving car. Thank god it was free.
