ShakeItPhoto In Review – Shake it, just like a polaroid
Calendar16 Tue, 13 Apr 2010 07:34:32 UTC +00:00
The built-in-camera is one of the popular features of the iPhone. There is a whole section of the AppStore devoted to apps that make use of it. From postcards to panoramic, photo cropping to image editing. Some more of gimmick then others that can just blow your mind. Today I got my hands on a fun little app that I would say is a bit gimmicky (if that’s a word) but still fun. Read on to see how Shakeitphoto developed. The basic function of Shakeitphoto is to mimic the experience of using the old school Polaroid or “instant” cameras. Keeping that in mind and having used camera mimicking apps such as G700-1st Soft Camera, I expected maybe a fun little interface that would bring me back and give me that old school vibe. Unfortunately that’s one area where the developer decided to skip.  Although not detrimental to the app, I felt that Read More

10 Great iPhone Camera Apps
Calendar16 Tue, 23 Mar 2010 15:34:28 UTC +00:00
Posted 03/23/2010 at 7:34am | by Jason Whong By now, you've probably launched the Camera app and taken a few pictures. Maybe you've even shared these pictures with other people. Though the built-in camera doesn't do everything your point-and-shoot does, and it will never have the optical abilities of a DSLR, it has a major advantage over dedicated cameras: the iPhone OS lets you install apps that take your pictures and video to another level. Here are 10 great apps that let you create, modify and share your images. You probably don't need all ten, as there's some feature overlap among these apps. Try a few of these to see if your creative mind enjoys using a variety of tools.

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane With ShakeItPhoto

06.29.09        App Score: 7/10    by Nick Campbell is a pretty simple app that works just like the iPhone camera app, but simulates a Polaroid camera. Perhaps you’re old enough to remember whipping out the clunky Polaroid camera for snapping instant photos and then delicately holding the film by the corner and shaking the crap out of it so it would develop faster. If not, you really missed out on a priceless point  in photography history. But fear not. ShakeItPhoto lets you relive the Polaroid experience – kind of. ShakeItPhoto launches in similar fashion to the iPhone camera app. When the shutter opens and you focus on your picture, simply tap the camera icon. You will be prompted to use the picture or retake it. Once you have selected a photo to use, ShakeItPhoto launches into an instant film simulator complete with gradual developing before your eyes. You can “shake” Read More

Polaroid
bg1973 4.0 stars Version: 1
Nicely designed Polaroid photo app! After a photo is snapped, the iPhone moves into a realistic Polaroid emulation. It makes a whirling sound, and a gray Polaroid photo emerges from the top of the screen. As the photo processes, the colors appear. Shaking the phone speeds the chemical process along. Very fun! Accurate photo quality with slightly subdued tone.
Great camera app
Jynxy 4.0 stars Version: 1
It would be really cool if you could press on the image and leave marks, just like on a real Polaroid! Great app regardless.
Taking many more iPhone photos now!

Love, love, love this app. I'm using my iPhone camera all day everyday now. It's so much fun to use and my daughter (18 months) enjoys doing some of the shak'n.
Very nice

good fun clean aesthetic - wished the app had more robust features like converting photos in library...but overall - awesome!
love! love! love!
Sally Johnny 5.0 stars Version: 1
Hands down, by far, best photography app for iPhone. The best part is shaking it to make the image appear faster! I also love the little noise it makes when the photo is being "developed" - just like a real Polaroid camera. Super fun: I haven't stopped using this app since I purchased it this morning. My friends and I can't get enough. Perfection!
Good but not great
Perezohana 3.0 stars Version: 1
The earlier reviews never pointed out that if you decide to "cancel" taking a picture the app goes into "limbo" forcing you to close the app. Having the ability to use existing photos on your camera would be great, I also agree with suggestion by others that it would help to know exactly what part of image will be used in final product. I'll reserve 2 Stars to see how updates resolve concerns. Thank you ... Great Start
So FUN

This totally redeems the crappy default iphone camera. Way to go. Super simple and the pics always turn out great. Nice job.
Fun way to take pictures
conigs 4.0 stars Version: 1
The effect is perfect and the sound spot on. It definitely adds personality to the iPhone camera. Two areas of improvemet could be made, though: First, the ability to recognize if the phone is held in landscape. It's just more comfortable to take a picture that way. Secod is to skip the use/retake dialog. The fun of Polaroid was the instantaneous result. That dialog detracts from it. Though this might be a limitation of the API. Overall, though, a great little app to play with.
Best Polaroid Simulator Available Today
rjl2001 4.0 stars Version: 1
This is the best polaroid app out there today. Does one thing and does it well. The colors are spectacular when compared to other apps such as Polarize. In addition to better colors, the resolution is far superior as well. The only thing I'd like to see added to this app would be the option to choose polaroid style frames. I would love to see the addition of the wide bottom border polaroid frame. Perhaps in the next update? Hint Hint.
Awesome camera app
davco9200 5.0 stars Version: 1
ShakeItPhoto makes a virtue out of the iphone's meager camera. The pics are well styled and the app is really fun to use. Highly recommended.
Great app!
robonic 4.0 stars Version: 1
Very worthy application. The effects are perfect and produce some beautiful shots. Definitely gives the crappy iPhone camera some personality. The only thing I would love to see is the ability to center you own photo crop.
Turns your iPhone snapshots into works of art!
Flozzle 5.0 stars Version: 1
Aside from the cool polaroid effect the processing of the pictures captured from the iPhone camera is amazing. Closest I have seen to what a real polaroid snapshot looks like. Highly recommended.
Awesome app!
BennaC 5.0 stars Version: 1
Everyone should download this immediately!
Just like my old camera!
Jschaible0525 5.0 stars Version: 1
I miss my old polariod so this is very cool. And the poloriod effect is alot more accurate then other apps. That would be cool if you could "blow" on the picture too through the microphone? 5 Stars!
Awesome App -- Andre 3000 would be proud
pcelauro 5.0 stars Version: 1
Photos look great, Polaroid effect is flawless. So fun to shake it! Love that they keep it simple. Bottles of fun, takes no work, perfect app for a workin' man. Hours of Polaroid bliss around the corner! If you love photography this app will knock you out.
Great!

fun AND quality!

Nick has done an excellent job with the image quality. As a photographer I appreciate that. Add to it that this app is just crazy fun, and you have a winner here. Nice work.
Amazing Polaroid Simulator
Frampton 5.0 stars Version: 1
I can't put this app down. It's so much fun that it makes the iPhone's subpar camera a joy to use! In fact, ever since I got ShakeItPhoto I actually enjoy the challenge of seeing what great shots I can capture on the go. I love that the processing pumps up the contrast and saturation to turn a boring shot into something dynamic and exciting. All this being said, there are a few improvements I'd like to see in a future update. 1. Option to save the original image in addition to the ShakeItPhoto Polaroid version. 2. Option to write a caption at the bottom of the photos. 3. Direct integration with the iPhone photo album so you can look at the photos you've taken without exiting the app. These improvements aside, this is truly a homescreen worthy app in every way!
Awesome app :)
teknokreeper 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Really helps us old guys re-visit the olden days! Good times! ***UPDATED*** Freakin' sweet! The best just got better! Thanks for the update Nick!
love! love! love!
Sally Johnny 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
Hands down, by far, best photography app for iPhone. The best part is shaking it to make the image appear faster! I also love the little noise it makes when the photo is being "developed" - just like a real Polaroid camera. Super fun: I haven't stopped using this app since I purchased it this morning. My friends and I can't get enough and the photos look JUST like a polaroid- only better! Perfection! UPDATE: Use EXISTING photos by pressing cancel when the app defaults to the camera. Choose a pic from your library and it processes it! You can even re-process the same photo for a cool effect! All the other photo apps don't look as great and as realistic as shakeitphoto. STILL the best photo app there is for the iPhone!
Almost perfect...
Cforcalvin 4.0 stars Version: 1
Fantastic filters- would be a perfect experience if you didn't have to confirm the photo "use photo" but if it immediately started processing after you snap the shutter. I don't know if that's a hurdle but that'd be a perfect update :)
Was GREAT, not so great anymore
David Yow 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
Before the new OS, this app was one of my very favorites. It forced you to compose your photo in a square as opposed to a rectangle, which I liked a LOT! Then with the new OS, you preview (as in looking through a view finder) with a rectangle that is not representative of the square you end up with. If you compose your shot with the full sized rectangle, and the final is a cropped version of what you saw in the "view finder", your composition is lost. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.
I'd Love To Give This 5 Stars But...
Ma_chine 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
1. The fact that you can't compose your image in a square format is frustrating and leads to too much of guess-work when you're setting up your shot.
pointless
DrLeRoy 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I don't get the point. I copy pictures from my ipod to look like a polaroid and they are not as good or as sharp as the original. What a waste. Or is there some point I am missing?
Nice!
Zeptepi 5.0 stars Version: 1
I bought after hearing Drew talk about it on Nerd Moment. Great stuff and it does somehow improve the lame iPhone camera.
Post-processing is great, interface is not
andreslucero 4.0 stars Version: 1.1
ShakeItPhoto produces the best-looking fauxlaroids of any app I've tried. Although some other apps come closer to the actual color of Polaroid film, ShakeItPhoto's filter makes for much more interesting photos. That said, I'm not crazy about the interface. At launch, the app opens to the camera by default—which is great if you're using it as a replacement for the built-in Camera app, but an annoyance if you just want to process an image from your library. The camera view itself would benefit from crop marks so you can be sure your composition will fit within the square produced by the app. I'd also prefer to have the original image saved to the library prior to processing. Finally, the whole "shake it like a Polaroid picture" concept gets in the way of taking multiple photos at once. First you have to confirm whether you want to use or retake the photo, then you have to wait for the photo to "develop", and I feel like I miss a lot of good pictures that way. I'd like a setting that allows me to skip those steps and just save the processed photo to the library.
Really, Roadhunter?
trigger119 4.0 stars Version: 1
ShakeIt is a copycat app that definitely doesn't do it better, and ShakeItPhoto definitely came first. ShakeItPhoto is a great, fun photo app that even has a great community of iPhone photographers who post at Posterous and Photoshakedown.com. Despite Wired reviewing ShakeIt first, don't be fooled into thinking ShakeItPhoto is the copycat here.
Staff favorite?
EdSmelly 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's got great sound and visual effects. I used to shoot Polaroid instants and this mimics them very well.
iShake it camera is better
FlSHERKlNG 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
iShake it Camera does all of the things this app doesn't and the shaking is much faster and you can write notes on the pics. I am deletingthis app.
shake it
kristenmcglynn 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
the BEST photo app!! and the newest update just made it even better. yea for faster shake!!
My favorite photo app!
Go_Daddy-O 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This one gets it right. Love it.
Love this app.
Wigglepuppiees 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I find myself using this app more than most other apps. It's the best 99 cent app offered. The photos come out fantastic and they look really authentic.
Square-format fun-and-games
designdroid 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Addicted to this app - really lovely effect - only needs an uploader to flickr and for the Polaroid-like border to be a bit less pink...
Feel the love...
casoundinc 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
How about different Polaroid backs? Like a 600 or a land or the old peel nagative? How about black and white? Otherwise the app I use the most.
AMAZING!!!
tHeBobGnarley 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This app is a must buy for photography enthusiasts! It would be even better if they added a way to label the Polaroid part of the photo after it is developed, maybe even add a fun felt tip marker font or something.
Love the update!
Thomas M Quirk 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Banana Camera Company has really given thought and concern to their customer's requests with this update. Everything works smoothly and is a great app for getting that classic Polaroid look.Great work guys!
Perfection
Venus and mars 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
This app works perfect and is so easy to use :)
Terrific app
Blue Meanie 1138 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Probably my favorite app right now for taking portraits of friends. It really recreates the same kind of warm, ragged intimacy that you got from Polaroids. The colors are a little muddied and the borders give it a nostalgic feel. I've been pleased with almost every picture I've taken.
Like it! And … you can use it on your existing pictures!
DarkClouds 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
OK… I almost didn't buy this app because I'd read a review that said the latest update, ver 2.0.1 would no longer allow you to process existing photos in your album (i.e. that you could only use it on new photos you take with the app). Happily, that is not correct. When you first launch the app, it brings up the camera to take a picture. Simply hit "cancel" and you can then select a photo to process from your photo album by tapping the "squares" icon in the at the bottom.I like the effects and how the app works. It's fun, and produces great results. One thing I would LOVE to see them add is some additional "polaroid style" templates. I've seen some cool ones on the "Lens", the photo blog of the New York Times, and it'd be great if they could build some more striking & creative options in. BUT… that said, it is very well done "as is" and definitely worth 2 bucks!
Meh.
paperlilley 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Not enough options. I know with "real" polaroids you can't choose a setting but it's an app! Images are too over exposed & not at all dreamy like legit polaroids. Waste of two dollars.
Just ok for a paid app
brookieritchie 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
I wanted to start with pros, but i cant think of any! For a paid app it offers not hardly enough. If you upload pics from ur iphone camera like me, it doesn't give u an option to zoom/crop/position photo before it turns it into a Polaroid. In keeping with Polaroid tradition, the images take about a minute to develop. I don't like having to wait when the results are so average. I forgot I paid for it at first so I wasn't bummed, but now I'm bummed!! Just want to let you all know it's not so great, there are better paid apps out there!
Falling Behind
Random User 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Crashes and hangs way too much for a paid app. Email share doesn't work. Love the color rendition and the simplicity of the app. A full-frame option (like the CrossProcess app) would be welcome. It would also be nice to turn the "development" time off completely--I love the fauxlaroid look but have zero patience. Same with the sound effect Lastly: no share/copy/delete/print option in the camera roll = ??? And you can't swipe between photos?
Nifty app but...
Pooky108 3.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Please update with the ability to export to instagram and other apps. Would love to incorprate with other photo apps!!
Instable
andrelopes 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.1
Great Polaroid effect, but the Facebook integration often does not work, and you're not allowed to try again after closing the picture. Should also have a Instagram shortcut.
