iTunes is great and everything, but it’s still just a standard music player. The most exciting feature of the whole program is Genius, at least in my opinion, and even that can be off from time to time. But Shazam wants you to ingest your music a bit differently from here on out, and has launched the Shazam Player app to give users a better chance to leverage its new feature, Lyric Play. Lyric Play is already available in the premium version of Shazam, Shazam Encore, and allows users to see lyrics playing in time with the music, as the song is being discovered. This technology is clearly nothing short of impressive, but the 20 seconds spent tagging a song isn’t really the ideal platform for this feature to be shown off. That said, the Shazam Player app lets you get your Lyric Play on throughout the entirety of songs. However, Read More

Starbucks and Apple are expanding their "Pick of the Week" program to include books, music, apps and videos. For several years, Starbucks and Apple have offered a "Song Pick of the Week" program. The program offered a free select iTunes music track that was downloadable by any Starbucks customer. The pair recently expanded the "Pick of the Week" program to include applications such as Shazam Encore. And starting now, the Pick of the Week will include books. The first offering is an extended sample from The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. You can snag a copy of this extended book sample by visiting a participating US Starbuck location and redeeming the free Pick of the Week card available at the register. Read More

We’ve been keeping tabs on Firemint’s newest upcoming title since it was announced back in February of this year. Things were much different back then: their new game was still known as Agent Squeak, Firemint wasn’t owned by EA yet, and Steve Jobs was still the CEO of Apple (ok, that one just happened, but still). Fast forward to now, and after a nearly 2 year development time, the title that is now known as SPY mouse [99¢] is now available in the US App Store. We’ll be putting SPY mouse thoroughly through the ringer and bringing you a review soon, but if you like scoring free games while picking up a cup of your favorite overpriced coffee then I want to let you in on a little promotion that’s going down to celebrate the launch of the game. Posted 08/16/2011 at 12:28pm | by Adrian Hoppel Starbucks has been offering customers free songs from iTunes each week since April 2008. Usually right next to the cash register is a stack of cards with "Pick of the Week" printed on the front and a unique code printed on the back. Grab a card with your coffee, type the code into iTunes, and start downloading a free song. It's a cool thing. Well, the coffee giant has just sweetened the deal. This week, you'll find a "Pick of the Week" card for a free app from the App Store. And not just any app, but Shazam Encore, which normally sells for $5.99. Shazam listens to whatever music is playing, identifies the song for you, and then offer you the ability to see the lyrics or share it with friends You can even buy the song through the app. It is unknown Read More

Shazam Encore updated with lyrics, how about iTunes?
Calendar16 Thu, 16 Jun 2011 14:00:00 UTC +00:00
Shazam has released another update for its paid Encore app, this one adding full lyrics of over 25,000 songs on the service from provider LyricPlay. It lets you stream the lyrics in real-time as the song plays, so you can sing (or even just read) along. It's not exactly a reason to shell out for the US$5.99 app -- I'm still using the free version to identify music that I listen to, and it works just fine for that purpose. But it's a nice addition to the Encore functionality, and it's good to see that someone has worked out how to make song lyrics available to listeners in a simple and easy way. In fact, this makes us wonder just where iTunes is on this issue. We've seen rumors for a long time that iTunes has been trying to add a lyrics feature (and there are plenty of ways to just Read More

Shazam Adds Lyrics — It’s Spontaneous Karaoke Time
Calendar16 Wed, 15 Jun 2011 15:16:55 UTC +00:00
by Ever had a spirited argument over song lyrics while at a bar? Well, music recognition service Shazam aims to stop such bloodsport with a new feature called Shazam LyricPlay. Shazam LyricPlay, made possible via Shazam’s acquisition of synchronized lyric technology from Tunezee, adds another level of discovery to the Encore premium version [iTunes link] of the iOS app. You can now tag a song, and the option to check out lyrics will pop up. Just click on “lyrics,” turn your phone to the side, and the lyrics will scroll in time to the song. The real-time scrolling feature doesn’t work for all songs, sadly. The lyrics library includes more than 25,000 songs, which means that you’ll be able to sing along more accurately — but no less off-key — to even more of your favorite jams. It’s like mini karaoke for your pocket, without all the weird videos featuring cows Read More
Bravo, Oxygen and Syfy to Shazam their feature programs
Calendar16 Tue, 31 May 2011 08:56:01 UTC +00:00
This summer’s feature programs from Bravo, Oxygen and Syfy are about to “get Shazamed,” giving viewers a “second screen” experience and the opportunity to engage with their favorite shows. That engagement usually means access to some additional content, which is not available elsewhere. The following Shazam for TV programming will begin on Bravo, Oxygen and Syfy this summer: In addition, all of Bravo’s “Summer by Bravo” promo commercials on TV, in theaters, and online will be Shazamable, giving fans extra information about the spot… I’m curious – do you dig the idea of Shazaming a show or commercial to get access to some additional content? [iPad-App] Discovr – Musik entdecken
Calendar16 Mon, 31 Jan 2011 12:52:41 UTC +00:00
Mini Disclaimer: I have done a little video work for the SoundHound website in the past, although I had nothing to do with the update I’m describing now. I’ve always thought that SoundHound ($4.99, review here) looked way better than its main competitor, Shazam, and this update has only deepened the divide between the two. The various UI elements in v3.4 (the mini player, main screen, iPod library) feel more like they were designed to fit together in one app, instead of feature additions added in version 1.x and 1.xx. In particular, the main screen now sports a much cleaner layout, with both the text and voice search fields set right next to one another. I also really like the improvements to the mini player (which was always a good idea — but simply didn’t look as good before) and the iPod library (which now has the same alphabet scrollbar that Read More

Shazam Encore Gets Previews
Calendar16 Wed, 17 Mar 2010 21:21:04 UTC +00:00
I’m shazaming tons of songs every day only to get home and having to look them up again on iTunes to remind myself which ones I enjoyed. Well, to face that issue, Shazam Encore has just received a new update today which now allows you to get previews directly in the app. In short, you can now hit pretty much any song in the tag or chart tab, and access a 30-seconds preview right away. It has some limitations as it doesn’t seem to contain tracks absent from iTunes (like the Beatles) but it’s still a very convenient trick. Read More

Shazam Encore/RED Shacks Up With last.fm and Pandora
Calendar16 Fri, 12 Feb 2010 00:26:35 UTC +00:00
February 11th, 2010 James Isabel You probably have seen the app where you put your device close to the TV and tag/identify music? Well it’s not a hoax! It’s an app called Shazam which is free. Today, its sister apps and Shazam (RED) got some really cool updates. The major update it got was the addition of support for last.fm AND Pandora both of which extend the productivity of the app itself AND makes the app all the while cooler. lays down the new features for both apps: - You can listen to Last.fm stations directly from your tagged Shazam tracks. - You can create new stations from those tracks in Last.fm, provided you have the Last.fm iPhone app installed. - You can view ticket and tour info for tagged artists with geolocation support to see when your favorite band will be near you. Of course the previous versions didn’t get Read More
The great music recognition app, Shazam Encore, just got an interesting new update. On top of allowing you to get tour and ticket information for tagged artists, Shazam Encore & Shazam Red can now redirect you at will to your Pandora or Last.Fm app so you can hear more similar songs on the go. Furthermore, this update also allows you to access Shazam’s official Blog directly from the app. While Shazam is available pretty much everywhere, Pandora is still US only and Last.Fm is limited to the US, Germany and the UK, so no luck for the rest of you. Also, make sure to have Pandora or Last.Fm installed if you want to see the new functions appear. Read More
12 “Wow Factor” iPhone apps [iPhone Applications]
Calendar16 Fri, 22 Jan 2010 15:23:15 UTC +00:00
There are plenty of jaw-droppingly cool iPhone apps, and we’ve assembled a few of them here on JAiB today. These aren’t necessarily the apps you’ll use every day, and they might not even be your favourites, but each of these apps is almost certain to elicit a “whaaaaat, did you just do that on your iPhone?!” from anyone you show them to. Google Maps, Street view ($200 – well, I’m just referencing the price of your iPhone) Let’s start the list off nice and easy. This is something amazing that the iPhone can do by default, and I’ve used it a few times to remember the name of a restaurant I ate at, when all I knew was which street I was on. Street view on the Google Maps app is almost unreal in how easy it makes “walking” down a street from the comfort of your couch a reality. Bump Read More

Shazam Encore And (Shazam) RED On Sale For The Holidays
Calendar16 Mon, 21 Dec 2009 21:38:10 UTC +00:00
Shazam Entertainment caused quite a stir when they announced that they would be crippling the free version of their popular music identifying app in order to make room for a more full-featured paid version, but no matter where you stand on that issue, you have to appreciate the fact that both paid versions of Shazam are once again priced lower than the competing Midomi SoundHound by $2.00 just for the holidays. Shazam Encore contains all of the free version’s features, including the ability to share song tags through a variety of services and purchase music directly through iTunes, but it also features a new interface, speed improvements, music recommendations, hot and popular music charts, song lyrics, the ability to search for music by artist, album, or track, a drive and tag mode that makes it easier to discover music while the device is docked, and, of course, unlimited song tagging. Shazam is one of those apps that when you first see it, it blows your mind. After using it for a while you forget how you were ever able to survive without it. The creators of Shazam have seen record numbers of downloads for their app and because of this they decided to make the app cost something. Shazam Encore is essentially the same thing as its older free version. The free version now only allows for 5 tags a month while the paid version offers unlimited. This makes sense that the company would like to make some money off their app but Encore isn't just a rehashing of old stuff. There are some new features that make it a great source for music information and looking up artists. The app now also provides ways to share your music experience as well as find ticket information for concerts that may be Read More
Can I Get An Encore?
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Nov 2009 06:41:56 UTC +00:00
Shazam Entertainment recently announced a new application now available in the App Store. Technically it’s not a new app, but more of a method to actually make money off of the current app. For those of you living under a rock, Shazam provides music tagging with the use of the microphone on the iPhone. The previously free version provided unlimited tagging, and the ability to posts tags on Twitter and Facebook. With the new paid version, you get that same goodness as above, but with quicker tagging speeds along, the ability to search, and a top ten tagged songs buy users. The new free version will no longer provide unlimited tagging. It will now only allow 5 tagged songs per month. Yeah very lame. For those of you with the current version, Shazam says that when you update you will continue to have the unlimited tags. Just prepare for reduced speeds Read More

Would You Shazam for $4.99?

by Since its debut, Shazam, the music discovery tool, has remained one of the most popular applications in Apple’s App Store. The immensely popular app is also available on many other mobile devices, and in June surpassed more than 50 million global users. Now Shazam Entertainment is looking to capitalize on their widespread popularity with a second, premium Shazam application that will set you back $4.99. Shazam Encore, released today, includes added functionality like music recommendations, album reviews, hot and popular tagged tracks, music search, and the ability to dock your iPod/iPhone in your car and tag music playing on your car stereo. We think it’s a valiant effort to monetize the Shazam product, but given that the free application suits the purpose of discovering music perfectly, we think the new app is going to be a hard sell. Shazam Launches $4.99 iPhone App, Cripples Free Version
Calendar16 Mon, 09 Nov 2009 19:22:16 UTC +00:00
Shazam Entertainment has just launched a new music identifying app for the iPhone titled Shazam Encore, which is now available in the App Store for $4.99, and as a result of this, the free Shazam iPhone app has been crippled to only allow you to identify up to five songs per month. According to The Wall Street Journal, the move to a paid version simply had to be done thanks to a slumping economy.  Shazam Entertainment’s chief executive Andrew Fisher stated that the company just wasn’t making enough off of in-app advertisements and iTunes downloads to sustain its current business model. Mr. Fisher says mobile advertising was one of the first victims of the recession, and he doesn’t expect ad rates to bounce to levels to sustain free apps for at least two years. Fisher further backed up that statement by saying the company makes most of its money by selling the app Read More

Seriously. There are ads. The big tag button is nice. But there are no settings. And I'd figure I'd pay for it with no ads. Weak sauce Shazam.
Ads
cdy 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
I downloaded this expecting to be free of the ads after paying the $5. Nope, there are still ads. Avoid it.
So disappointing!

1. Ads. If we're paying for an app, THERE SHOULD BE NO ADS!!!
Ads? for a paid version !!!! wtf!
vgoklani 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Why are there ads on the paid version? What am I paying for? For the privilege of viewing ads...
Scam

What a marketing rip-off. Paid expecting to lose the ads. Nope. Free version is just as good/better. dont waste your money. Crap.
Ads in a paid $5 app?! Ridiculous
J-Streets 2.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
By putting this new app out and crippling the original I had to get it bc I use it way more than 5 times a month. But they have ads in it? Are you joking? That's bogus. I don't want to look at ads in an app I paid for. Especially if it's $5.
Failed to deliver
Pk-girl 1.0 stars Version: 2.2.2
I upgraded - just like the tag said to - to get the additional songs I had tagged that it wouldn't give me in the free version. So - guess what happened--- I lost all my history from Shazam! Including the ones it said I would get if I upgraded! Thanks for NOTHING!!!
Don't waste your money!
YoliD 1.0 stars Version: 2.2.2
Was on a road trip and we came across a great old school station so I broke down and paid. Out of about 20 tries only tagged 1 song!!! Should have went with Sound Hound!!
This NOT an Upgrade.
johnnyoffline 1.0 stars Version: 2.2.2
All of my tags from the free version are left in the old app. This app isn't an upgrade, it's another blue dot on my phone. If I want to keep my previous tags, I have to keep both the pay and free version of Shazam.
Should be $1 or $2
msmusica 1.0 stars Version: 2.2.2
For $5 soundhound is better value because of its faster and more powerful
Do not buy it!
Vadim 1.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
It is not much different from the free version, especially if you do not upgrade the free one to the latest version which limits ability to use free Shazam app to something like 5 trackings per months. I personally have not noticed any significant difference at all. The new "fast tracking" option is still slower than Midomi's :(
Amazing!!!
boyking24 5.0 stars Version: 2.1.2
When I first tried the free App I figured it would get maybe 25% of songs. I tried radio songs and songs from my music Collection that I downloaded from discs without song titles or bands. It picked up at least 80% of them and after trying a second time at different sections of the song it picked up half of the 20% it missed. Pretty obscure music too, not Britney Spears or the Police but: DJ shadow, Bjork's ep's, EZ Rollers, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Stretch, John Murphy and David Hughes, Ocean Color Scene, Nobody, Yann Tierson, Primal Scream, Tortoise, Freakwater, Leo Kottke, Daedelus, Cornelius, ...you get the picture...plus two of my favorite songs I've had for 6 years and never knew who played them...Amazing id...you cant get everything...but what it does is Fantastic.
Excellent App
Chaos5061 5.0 stars Version: 2.0.0
Has never gotten a song wrong. Tried the free version of the app was great ran out of id's so upgraded. Paid version is faster.
Awesome!!!!

I am hard-of-hearing. And I enjoy music a lot. One problem I have, however, is hearing the names of songs when the dj's say them. With Shazam, problem solved! And the links into iTunes make it really easy to add to my music collection. Thanks!
Awesome app!

I wish I had this program YEARS ago! To think of all the time I wasted trying to find out who sang a song I happened to hear on the radio...hoping to catch it again...those days are gone! This app has only failed me a couple of times...how does it do it!
Great for iPods!

Midomi isn't very iPod friendly!
Crashes unlike the prior, free version
AreJayBee 2.0 stars Version: 2.1.0
Two stars is generous. Much worse than prior free version (which was a 5-star app easily): (1) Constantly crashes, (2) Doesn't recognize music nearly as well, (3) doesn't report which remix or song variations you're listening to like the prior free version. Holy cow it needs to be fixed.
DisAPPointing! Has ADS like Midomi!! MusicID is still the best by far!

*New design - slight improvement over the free version…but It’s slow and not user friendly at all. MusicID is better by a mile!
Good but...
THATxSxWHATxSHExSAID 4.0 stars Version: 2.1.2
It's a bit pricey and it can't tag classical music. You guys should fix that. Other than that I love this app 

Works great with all music types, but new version has a minor bug

I've been using the paid version of Shazam Encore for a couple of weeks, and in a nutshell, it's worth every penny and more. The program will identify your favorite song by scanning a few seconds, and most importantly for me (I live in Costa Rica) it can find music in multiple languages (I've confirmed it does find music in Spanish) as well as some different versions of songs (it can identify remixes of certain songs)... With the newest version however I'm having a slight problem. My favorite place to find music is while listening on my car stereo, which I have connected to my iphone via bluetooth (Alpine IVA-w505 with KCE-300 BT). Now, when I make the software listen to my car stereo's music (Touch to Shazam) it actually links the bluetooth adapter, so it mutes my car stereo... Only workaround is to turn off bluetooth on the phone, which is a bit annoying. Otherwise great piece of software!!
An app that's actually worth $4.99

I usually don't buy apps, but because Shazam is one of my favorite apps, I bought this one. Wow. Not regretting this one. I'm pretty impressed how they topped their own product.
Great app; Much better than Midomi
pookerella 5.0 stars Version: 2.1.0
I have both and Shazam wins hands down. I have done several comparison tests and Shazam tags correctly, faster, and with vaguer input, far more often than Midomi. The only thing I wish it would do is allow me to transfer my "free version" tags. Perhaps I am missing something, but if it's available, I can't easily find how to do this.
