We had a rather in-depth discussion about Ship Finder HD over in the TUAW back channel this morning, trying to decide whether or not to feature it in our First Look series. In the end, we determined that the cool functionality outweighed the iffy design and that it was just really a neat thing to be able to track ships around the world in real time. And that's exactly what Ship Finder HD does. It uses AIS coverage from across the globe to position ships on maps. Lee Armstrong of pinkfroot, a small iPhone OS development house, was kind enough to share this video showing Ship Finder HD in action. He writes. "[T]he new iPad's form factor enables the app to be much more functional for just the casual user and the professional mariner." I like his app it does what it says almost...... i like the fact that you can see a picture of the vessel(s) you are tracking . the only issue i have with this app right now is I havent seen any ship data for the USA as stated in the description of the app. Please fix this or tell me how to.. thanks......keep up the good work i think you have a winner here. I will re-evaluate once this issue is resolved... also would like to see Los Angeles , Long Beach , Portland OR, the bay area and seattle WA ports....

I think that boaters and harbor watchers are going to love having AIS ship plotting and detailed information available in their pocket. Ship Finder obviously needs more data feeds, especially here in the States, but it's designed so that enthusiasts like myself can provide them. Plus, more and more vessels, including medium size yachts, will be equipped with AIS transponders. Ship Finder 1.0 is quite well done, but is just the beggining of what AIS apps can and will be. The developer has done a very nice job of presenting the relevant AIS information directly requiring a minimum of interaction. Detailed information is easily accessible when needed. While the developer is clear to point out that this application should not be used for navigation, it is very useful to get an idea of what vessel traffic might be in the area that could affect your plans for the day. As a professional mariner, I try to collect as much information as is available about the area that I'll be working in and Ship Finder provides quick access to an additional source of data. I'll look forward to more feeds coming on line in other areas.

Great app!! It is just what I was trying to find to identify ships here in the USA Pacific Northwest. It is great to know which ones are coming my way without paying hundreds of dollars for an AIS receiver for the chart plotter. Good user-friendly interface and well worth the money. On startup it goes to the area of the selected AIS feed which is great, but it will be even better when it also goes to the same zoom level. Many thanks to the developer!

As a professional mariner, I try to collect as much information as is available about the area that I'll be working in and Ship Finder provides quick access to an additional source of data. Version 1.2 adds some useful additional feeds. Between the Oregon and Vancouver BC feeds the coverage of the Pacific Northwest is quite good now. I'm sure that new feeds will continue to be made available over time.

Ok I'm going to start off by saying this is a cool app. I live in the mouth of Lake Erie and watch the freighters up and down bound everyday. When you buy the app they tell you what regions they cover, so if they don’t show the region you want I guess don’t buy it. I bought it in hopes that they will expand their coverage to include the Great Lakes Region. In the mean time I still use it as a “time killer” (hey people play games I look at ship stats) to check the stats of Ships that aren’t even in my region.

Tracked my Cargo Ship!

I'm impressed! As an independent toy designer (among many other things) I was very pleased to see this app existed, but wasn't sure if it would actually find the Cargo Ship my latest toy design was on. Not only did it find it, I was actually able to track it and see it arrive at the exact pier that my freight company told me it would arrive at! Excellent job guys! I will be recommending this to my fellow toy designers who regularly get shipments from Hong Kong to Los Angeles (keeps the anxiety down knowing where our Cargo Ship is at!)
