This Week at 148Apps: August 8-12
Calendar16 Sun, 14 Aug 2011 23:53:08 UTC +00:00
By Chris Kirby on August 14th, 2011 This week, August 8-12, Graveck co-founder Matt Gravelle shares the secret of his app store success, the October App Developer's Conference is announced, and GiggleApps shows you the trick to teaching your child to draw. This week, August 8-12, 148Apps interviewed Matt Gravelle, co-founder of Graveck, the developer behind one of the most successful and addictive iPhone games – Skee-Ball. Interviewer Gianna LaPin writes, “Graveck has recently started developing for the Android platform; this, combined with all the recent advances in the iOS world, is enough to make Matt’s head spin. Looking forward, he sees steady, predictable advancements in the mobile computing field instead of major breakthroughs in the near future. Specifically he agrees with Apple’s move towards creating a more seamless, cohesive user experience between devices by leveraging cloud storage, and Graveck plans on adopting that same philosophy.” $0.99 Released: 2009-09-22 :: Category: Read More

Posted 08/10/2011 at 11:00am | by J Keirn-Swanson Few games quite bring back that extra special feeling of childhood quite like Skee-Ball. The crashing roll of the balls after you drop your quarter, the swing, the drop in the rings. We spent a good deal of our childhood and our allowance pitching ball after ball up the ol' incline, but we rarely get a chance these days.  We're happy to say, all that has changed if only in a virtual sense. Our first game up is Freeverse, Inc's iOS version of the classic arcade game which comes in an iPhone version as well as a bigger brother iPad-sized version, and it's exactly as we remember it. Big ten point ring with smaller rings inside for the 20, 30, and 40 point increments, with a fifty and two 100 point rings up towards the top. The balls roll down a chute to Read More

5 iPhone Games You Should Supersize on Your iPad
Calendar16 Tue, 06 Apr 2010 22:12:32 UTC +00:00
iPhone and iPod touch users who just added Apple’s third device to their inventory of gadgets know that the out-of-pocket expense on the iPad itself could eventually pale in comparison to the total cost spent on applications. For those of us left with much less discretionary income after purchasing our pricey product, we need to maximize our iPad app budget. Thankfully Apple promised that most the applications we already know and love would work on the iPad too. Practice has proven a tad disappointing with some of these apps, but we have found a number of iPhone games that sparkle on the big screen. Here are five that you should definitely try out on the big screen. What other iPhone/iPod touch games have you found to look beautiful on the iPad? Some iPhone games just look amazing and play spectacularly on the iPad even though there may not be an iPad Read More

As a followup to yesterday's inteview with ngmoco CEO Neil Young, this morning we spoke with Freeverse President Ian Lynch Smith to hear what the recent purchase of Freeverse by ngmoco means to them. The full audio is attached below, but here is a summary of the talk. Originally founded in 1994, Freeverse's earliest titles were Mac shareware games. They later branched out in to games for Windows, XBOX Live Arcade, and most recently the iPhone. Freeverse's was one of the few 3D games that launched with the App Store. Also immediately available were and . They then went on to release a catalog of great iPhone games, both developed in house and and by outside developers published by Freeverse. Since the surprise announcement yesterday of ngmoco's purchase of Freeverse, what we've all been wondering is what is going to change. Ngmoco has recently shifted gears to an entirely free to Read More
Posted 02/23/2010 at 7:41am | by J.R. Bookwalter Ladies and gentlemen, the consolidation of iPhone gaming companies has begun! Will startup ngmoco be the Godzilla of App Store gaming? TechCrunch is reporting that iPhone game startup ngmoco has raised a $25 million series C round and taken its first step toward dominance in the App Store by acquiring Freeverse, creator of such popular games as Moto Chaser, Flick Bowling and Flick Fishing. The financing round was led by Institutional Venture Partners, with existing shareholders Kleiner Perkins, Norwest Venture Partners and Maples Investments also participating. That brings ngmoco’s total capital raised to $40.6 million -- which yet again proves that iPhone gaming is indeed nothing to sneeze at. ngmoco CEO Neil Young (not to be confused with the performer of the same name) claims that he wants to “amass enough scale to accelerate away from the pack,” and the swallowing up of Read More
Seemingly out of nowhere, TechCrunch is reporting that ngmoco was able to raise another $25 million in funding (totaling $40.6 million) and went out and purchased Freeverse with it. ngmoco intends to apply their love it or hate it free-to-play model to all of Freeverse’s current and future iPhone games, which will allow them to make money solely off of in-app purchases.  According to ngmoco’s CEO Neil Young, the free-to-play model has been working rather well as of late, so well in fact that the company decided to postpone the development of Rolando 3 until they can figure out how to implement the controversial model. “On any given day, you have about 2% of your audience paying you money,” said Neil Young. ngmoco has about 20 new games planned for this year, and the company expects their newly acquired Freeverse group to match that total, which means you should expect to Read More
25 iPhone Games That Should Rock on the iPad

Posted 02/04/2010 at 2:53pm | by Andrew Hayward Apple's iPad announcement event didn't put an especially large focus on the gaming possibilities of the new device, but what was shown demonstrated how easily developers can modify current iPhone and iPod touch apps with just a brief time investment. We've already seen how updated versions of N.O.V.A. and Need for Speed: Shift will take advantage of the iPad, but it got us thinking -- how might some of the other best-selling or beloved iPhone games use the iPad's updated features to enhance the existing experience? Here's our list of 25 games we'd love to see enhanced for the iPad, but if you have your own dream app upgrade in mind, be sure to let us know in the comments! Freeverse Brings You Back Into The Arcade With NBA Hotshot
Calendar16 Wed, 06 Jan 2010 15:07:13 UTC +00:00
Freeverse already has one massive arcade hit on their hands with their best selling paid iPhone app, Skee-Ball, and now they are looking to add another to that list with NBA Hotshot. NBA Hotshot is an officially licensed arcade basketball shooting game for the iPhone and iPod touch.  It features a Classic game mode where you will be racing against the clock to score as many baskets as possible, and a new Three Strikes mode where you must be as precise as possible with each of your shots because if you miss three, the game is over.  Each shot you make fills up your prize meter, which allows you to obtain virtual prizes, like team logo-ed balls, that can be used in the game. NBA Hotshot also utilizes Plus+ for achievements and online leader boards, so you can compare your scores with friends.  To take it one step further, NBA Hotshot Read More

Top 50 iPhone Games 2009, Part 5: The Rest Of The Best!
Calendar16 Sat, 02 Jan 2010 09:44:20 UTC +00:00
For the last 10 games to make our Top 50 iPhone Games 2009, did you see what I did there? Notice how I rephrased the classic “Best of the Rest” to “Rest of the Best”? The reasoning behind that is I wanted to divide the games into 5 sections and I just couldn’t find a coherent theme to glue these last 10 games together. They’re in NO WAY better or less than the first 40. Let’s just get that out the way… CANABALT, a very respectable port of the Flash game to the iPhone. The soundtrack and artwork look suited for more “serious” gamers than With the latest update including scoreboards and a new soundtrack, no wonder this is a serious gaming addiction. As indicated by yesterday’s Flurry analytics data, Christmas day was massively successful for iPhone app developers, but today, thanks to iTunes Connect finally being up and running as it should, developers are finally able to weigh-in on just how successful the big day was. According to TechCrunch, Doodle Jump was able to sell about 80,000 units on Christmas day while being ranked in the top five.  Freeverse’s Skee-Ball, which is currently the #1 paid app in the App Store but wasn’t on Christmas day, sold 47,926 units.  That’s reportedly 10x the sales from the previous Friday.  Freeverse’s other $.99 app, Flick Fishing, which currently sits at #16, sold 31,741 units on Christmas day. Those are just some examples of top-selling apps, but apparently apps located a bit lower on the chart still saw large increases in sales.  Taptivate’s Voices, another $.99 app, was sitting around the #44 spot on Christmas day Read More

Normally we post about freebies on Friday, as "Freebie Friday" has such excellent alliteration-- I suppose in this case "Wild Wednesday" will have to do as these freebies won't last long. While Freeverse's Skee-Ball [99¢] may win when it comes to realism and actually licensing the real Skee-Ball machine, The Iconfactory's Ramp Champ [Free] takes the cake in the art style and originality department and has always been my ball-rolling game of choice. (Even though I agree with some of the criticisms of wonky ball physics.) Ramp Champ takes the arcade game of skee ball, shrinks it down to the iPhone screen, and applies the same thick layer of highly stylized graphical work seen in all the other Iconfactory products. Included in the initial release of Ramp Champ are four different virtual skee ball machines. Clown Town has a carnival theme, Breakwater Bay is underwater, Space Swarm tips its hat at Read More

The dark side of Skee-Ball for iPhone
Calendar16 Wed, 28 Oct 2009 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
I won't make any excuses, and I won't beat around the bush: I'm addicted to Skee-Ball [iTunes link], at least to the very-entertaining iPhone version from Freeverse. In fact, the reason I haven't written about it until now is that every time I get ready, I decide a little more "research" is in order, and I find myself on another Skee-bender. It's getting ridiculous, annoying my friends and upsetting my home life. I'd like to say, "I can stop whenever I want to," but I keep coming back to the warm glow of the LED scoreboard and the comforting sounds of wooden balls racking up just for me. What makes Skee-Ball so entertaining for me is the realism of the gameplay. It sends me right back to my childhood; carnivals, arcades and Chuck E. Cheese's. The physics of the game are bafflingly realistic, with each roll responding to every nuance of Read More
Skee Ball
Calendar16 Fri, 23 Oct 2009 08:20:54 UTC +00:00
Flick Skeeball is pretty much an app that gives the player a chance to play arguably one of the most popular arcade games that can be found in arcades around the world. The objective is simple, toss balls towards the holes to score as many points as possible. The more points you can rack up, the more tickets you can earn. Tickets were an interesting addition to a mobile iPhone game. Everytime you play the game, you'll earn tickets based on how well you do. Once you have enough tickets you can visit the store to "buy" different things ranging from useless toys to different ball types that can be used in game. The game played pretty smooth, about the same as every flick game out there. The ball was sometimes inconsistent when throwing as it would sometimes fall short of my target even though I flicked quickly. This could have Read More
App of the Week: A Nostalgic Time Killer
Calendar16 Wed, 07 Oct 2009 22:10:33 UTC +00:00
I’m not a big on wasting time, but there is always that inevitable wait somewhere, at the dentist, the Motor Vehicle Administration, the coffee shop, where a little distraction is appropriate. The 99-cent iPhone app Skee-ball fits the bill. To play, you flick a finger across the screen to set your Skee-ball in motion. You can tilt your phone to add a little English to your shot. Or you can place both thumbs on the screen and make your shot with a shake of the phone. You’ll hear the clatter of the Skee-ball on the wooden ramp as it rolls, hops and drops into a ring to score. Sign up for the Plus feature and you can play head-to-head against a friend and check your scores against the leader board. (People report that Plus can cause crashes—as it did for me). If you join Plus, make sure to click the opt-out Read More
Two New 'Ramp Champ' DLC Packs Available
Calendar16 Fri, 02 Oct 2009 19:47:29 UTC +00:00
The Iconfactory has released two new DLC packs available for their nostalgic ball rolling game, Ramp Champ [App Store]. We had a great time with the game in our review, and these two new packs provide even more of the same great gameplay. Each of the packs will get you two new ramps, along with eighteen new prizes matching the themes of the ramps, six new challenges, and new trophies. Like the other Ramp Champ DLC, both of these packs are 99¢, and extend the original game content with new things to aim for, more great Iconfactory style art, and matching music. The first DLC is the Voyage Pack, which includes Star Struck, a space themed ramp and Plunderin' Pirates, which obviously (eventually) has pirates as targets. The other DLC pack has a Halloween theme. Trick or Treat will have you rolling balls at kids in costumes and candy. Grave Danger Read More
4Q Interview: Freeverse – Skee-Ball
Calendar16 Wed, 30 Sep 2009 17:16:34 UTC +00:00
As I sat back and thought about things last week, I realized that the site was missing something. Every news source worth their salt partakes in long form interviews, which are great, but for the most part aren’t read all the way through due to their length. Being the busy guy that I am, I completely understand, and in my understanding I’ve decided that four questions (4Q) is the length that interviews should take. So with that, I’ll leave you with the interview. _________________________________________________________ Being a lifelong fan of skee-ball, I decided to reach out to Freeverse via e-mail to get some important questions answered about their new app, aptly named Skee-Ball (how was this not used already?). Fortunately, my desperate pleas for answers were answered by none other than Lydia Heitman, marketing director extraordinaire, and Justin D’Onofrio, senior producer/pizza guru. Check out the full four question interview after the break. Read More
Here are a number recent game releases that we had previewed in the past. All seem to be solid titles, though none we felt compelling enough to highlight on their own. Skee-Ball ($0.99) - The officially licensed version of Skee-Ball from Freeverse and Graveck. This game will feel familiar to owners of 10 Balls 7 Cups as it was created by the same developers, but with some notable improvements. There are some additional control options as well as the use of the accelerometer to add spin to the ball. The biggest upgrade, however, seems to be the integration of actual pictures of prizes that you can keep and integration with Plus+ for achievements and leaderboards. As good a version of pure Skee-ball as can be found on the iPhone, but it's still just endless Skee-ball. Against the Fire ($0.99) - Meridian's followup title to the well received dual-stick zombie shooter Alive Read More

Love it! So proud of you guys and the excellent quality of games you put out there. So when do we get to play Setback on our iPhones? :-) (From long lost "you know who" in CT!)
Wow

BigKeil 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
After I lost 8,000 points worth of loot I don't even wanna play anymore, unless I get it back,or 8,000 points! Not to mention I had to reinstall it to stop it from crashing everytime...compensation please!!!!! Could be a 5.star app
Just Awesome...
Skeewalker 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Really digging this app. It runs smoothly, the graphics are great, the prizes/achievements are hilarious (Glitter Pencil FTW), and it's very addictive. It’s definitely the best and most authentic Skee-Ball app around.
Very fun and Its better than arcade bowling and other copy cat games like this
yankees_own! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The original skew ball is better Than arcade bowling and thoes other games
Just as addictive as real-life Skee-Ball!
ctrymaus 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I can see I'm going to be playing this a LOT! I played Skee-Ball one summer at Cedar Point, Ohio so much that I won a casserole dish! Now I can have the joy of playing anytime I want! I love the graphics, the feel of the game, and everything! This app. is SO worth the money!
The definitive Skee-Ball app!
Jypsy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I am a big fan of the various Skee-Ball apps out there, and until this version was released, 10 Balls 7 Cups was my addiction.
Definitely Skee-ball!
kewlfocus 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
Lots of fun even at it's most basic core. This is a skee-ball game through and through. I really like that there are rare items you can purchase. It'd be nice if we could challenge directly through Plus+ though. Some sort of in-app DLC would be interesting too.
Good game
iamveryold 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
One of the most addictive apps I have found
This game is crack and that's a good thing.
stitchrobot 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Have both Skee-Ball and Ramp Champ. The graphics in Ramp Champ are bright and beautiful as expected from the guys at iconfactory, but skee-ball as a whole is far far far more addictive. The dynamics of rolling a ball to put in a cup is more satisfying to me than hitting objects (Ramp Champ) the tickets in Skee-Ball can be exchanged for different balls as well as random kitch objects. And the inclusion of N+ network for achievements is a fantastic add that gives the game a real sense of longevity. this game is easily worth the same $2 ramp champ charges. Pick it up.
Awesome

This game i awesome and addicitng but the only thing is the stuff that you get would be fun if you could use it in some way (ex. wearing it)
Looove this game!!!
J.Thunnder 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Ok, so I was looking through the top 25 apps, and I came across this one. Well, to make this short and sweet, I'm glad I did. Has everything any skee-ball in any arcade would have. After I bought it I was hesitant, but now, I PLAY IT ALL THE TIME! (:
Surprisingly PERFECT!
Maverick3232 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Wow! I must say I was not expecting much with this game. I figured it would be fun for a bit, but would probably end up in my app "toy box" after a few days. But wow...I have now put in probably 3 to 4 hrs total on this game and I still can't put it down!!! Once you figure out how bonuses help, and how they can carry over to your next round...it is a constant, addicting quest for the HIGH score! Physics are right on. Love how you can tilt to aim the ball in the air (little trick you'll learn ;-) Excellent work! WELL worth it if you like Skee Ball at ALL! Can you beat 5,100?!? :-)
Epic
Jeremy*K 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I couldn't think of a way to make this app any better. Would still be a great value at $100.
Cracktastic!!!
Eggpoacher 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
It's going to take one serious 12 step program for you to be able to put this game down.
Get it
Appbuddy 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Awesome physics. Would be great if online, head-to-head matchups were incorporated into the app like Homerun Battle 3D!

Love the game but suddenly started crashing on launch. Nothing will get it to work anymore.
A piece of CRAP!!!!!
Martpie 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
If it doesn't crash after spooling for 3 minutes trying to open/run, it completely freezes up my phone. Not only do I want my money back, I want the considerable amount of time I have spent trying to get this crap app to work. DO NOT BUY!
Keep locking up!!!
Auto Buffs LLC. 1.0 stars Version: 1.0

The game was fun so I purchased the full version. Since I bought it, it successfully loaded and played twice after several trys. Since then, it crashes everytime. DO NOT PURCHASE!!!
Needs GameCenter
AlphaΩmega47 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
Really needs GameCenter! GameCenter is a LOT better than plus+. So many updates but NO GAMECENTER. If you put GameCenter on Skee-Ball than it gets 5 stars.GameCenter GameCenter GameCenter GameCenter
Euclid Beach Skeeball
EBSkeeball 2.0 stars Version: 2.1
Don't know what they did to this game, but it no longer opens on my iPhone. And, it's slower; not so much fun. Sometimes newer is not better. Too bad, because I was using this to get a skeeball fix.
Needs fix

Compensation for lost loot?
BigKeil 3.0 stars Version: 2.1

Simple and fun, definitely worth it!
Good, but...
iCrackerjack 4.0 stars Version: 2.1
I love this game! Great time-waster! However, items you get from redeeming tickets are too expensive! I couldn't afford the ball I wanted for too long! This is still a great game, though, and I would definitely recommend it. Worth $0.99.
Good, but...
Gdttcduhvfuhdyhtgdu 3.0 stars Version: 2.1
