Ford has this pretty cool system called AppLink that lets smartphones take advantage of the car’s built-in voice recognition. The selection of compatible apps has been limited, but now they can count one more well-established name to add to their roster: Slacker Radio. Once paired over Bluetooth, you can tell Ford Sync to play stations (either custom built, or any of those tailored by Slacker’s DJs) over the stereo, block artists or songs you don’t like, or conversely mark others as favourites for easy access later, all hands-free. Pandora already has a comfortable home with Ford Sync, and offers similar functionality, but Slacker has the major bonus of being available outside of the U.S. It’s also free if you can sit through the occasional ad, but if you’re willing to fork up ten bucks each month, you get unlimited skips, on-demand tracks, and local caching in iOS, Android, and BlackBerry apps. Slacker Radio made a major announcement last night at the Showstoppers event at CES. Slacker 2.0, the latest version of the music streaming service for Android, will support wireless station caching. This new feature will allow Slacker members to enjoy their favorite music stations even if they lose their network connection. Slacker Radio has made good on its promise to deliver cached stations to Android phones. Anyone with a Slacker Radio plus membership will now be able to listen to their favorite stations even if they lose their connection while riding the subway or going into remote areas with weak data connections. A “Cache Station” will include a locally-stored playlist of songs available if the connection to Slacker’s streaming service fails. The “Auto Refresh” feature will automatically wake overnight while charging and download songs from a selected station. A new set of songs will be downloaded each night, or only if the user selects to cache stations manually. A double-edged sword I have found that Slacker has the best music service (free, anyway) out of all the options. Most customizing, best quality, great algorithms and all around pretty good service. Although, this app is awful. Constant freezing, random skipping, slow to start up, sometimes requires (multiple!) reboot just to get a station to start. If the app wasn't so buggy, I would quickly pay for the full service. Dx

One of my favorites... This is another app I originally downloaded for my iPad 2 (the other one was TuneIn Radio). I don't ever write reviews unless I love something, and this is definitely one of my top favorite apps I've ever used. I actually went to their Facebook page and found a one month free trial of their Premium membership, and I loved it, so I'm pretty sure I'm keeping it I stream music from TuneIn Radio and when I like a new song, I find it on this app and listen to it when I want. When I first used the app it was 3 years ago on my BB storm, an it was great. The Android app is flaky at best. I have used it on a Droid X, Droid X2 and a Droid 2, the one thing they all had in common was how unstable the app was. The car dock seemed to make it even more so. Switching between apps, would kill the app, sometimes even crash the phone.

I've never had any problems with Slacker. I cancelled two XM radio subscriptions because Slacker is better. I love the way that you can specify the songs/artists that you want to hear on your personalized stations. Pandora will periodically play these stupid songs that I have to block-doesn't happen as much with Slacker. 5 Stars all day long!

I always have to sign in even when i shouldnt have to like switching a song or channel. Forgets "favorite" list or loses it. Lags and often skips a song in the middle of playing and sometimes at the start. Sometimes hitting skip once will skip multiple times using up your allowed (6) skips. Force closes sometimes when changing pages while music is playing also wont uninstall tried several timeshare so yea its a hassle ...have fun!...

I understand the need for commercials but when it is the SAME commercial 99% of the time (e.g. Privacystar) it becomes an intolerable nuisance that ruins the listening experience. Far more annoying to hear that same annoying commercial every third song than the nuisance calls they claim to block.

The app works great for me. Playback work decently well even on 2g networks, but it kills my battery. I've narrowed the problem down to the ford sync service. Would drain battery in 6 hours while idle. I have to manually stop these services to fix. Please fix this. I will not use until this problem is gone. N1, t-mobile.

It came with my sgs2 preinstalled and I didn't even want it. I just couldn't leave it alone because it drains your battery even when you are not using it. Matter of fact I never even started up the app but it would try to fetch stuff from the internet on its own, and spam the system event log like every 30 minutes. And the whole thing is done outside of the google sync framework its very annoying. I had to dig through the logcat to figure out what was keeping my phone from sleeping. stupid coders

I use this at work every day. Caching is also a godsend, since my wi-fi is spotty, and I don't really want to use my entire data allowance on radio. Also, my work won't allow mp3 playlists, so no internet radio for me. Great selection, nice options. The commercials are irritating enough that I pay the $4 for Plus service. I figure the ability to pick any song or album to play on demand would be worth $10 if I actually spent that much on music every month. In fact, it's a great deal. But I want random play, so Plus is good for me. One issue I have is that the program will stop periodically throughout the day. Sometimes multiple times in one hour. Less so, when I'm not touching the phone. I accidentally left my screen on (disabled sleep) and guess what? Played straight through. For those with heavily modded systems, I think some other process takes precedence and kills Slacker. Keeping it on and in the foreground seems to have solved that. But since I'm worried about screen burn (happened with XiiaLive on my last phone), I will try to find a solution. Screen saver app? Maybe I'll write one...

It is a touchy app, but I love it. To avoid getting two songs playing at once, or it stopping, let the album artwork load before skipping songs. Only thing I would change is just that; make album artwork optional.

I really enjoy using slacker radio, but it crashes once or so daily, has trouble mantaining a data connection (no task killer), long load times (wifi and 3G), and periodically shuts down completely when the devs issue an update. Extremely annoying having to clear all my cached content and stored data when a major update comes through. Favourites dumped down the crapper every time.

This app was flawless on the iPhone, but with Android, Slacker has been very unreliable for me for over a year now. Commercials on the free subscription are short and unobtrusive, which is nice. But the app frequently fails to resume music streaming following commercials resulting in the app having to be shut down and restarted to resume play. Very annoying. With the latest update the app will no longer connect,although Slacker has acknowledged this.

For all these complaints about it not connecting: When the most recent update was released, they also took the site down (probably for maintenance). It works great for me now, and all I had to do was wait. If you're still having issues, try reinstalling the app. The app itself is a constant work in progress, but nothing that some patience won't solve. I still enjoy it more than Pandora. I paid for premium on both, but so fsr Slacker takes the cake. Station cache is a godsend!

Every time I open slacker on my phone, it never loads. Even when I do have 4G. AND THEN when it does load, the songs take about 10 years to loaf as well. I actually had to uninstall it for it to work. But then of course you have to re enter your login info, which of course doesn't work, and when I tried to have them send me my password, it sent me to a web page that doesn't exist. So then I had to create a new account, but it wouldn't let me because there was an "error". This app sucks. GET PANDORA

I have been a platinum customer since it was first released. Sure the app has had its flaws, all apps do. However I don't think the update is the issue. Slacker's website is down. I suspect that they are doing a server over hall. Just think, with all of the customers that are being added from new phones having Slacker App already loaded on them? I bet the app is fine. Just be patient everyone. Till then play your own music on your device. You know, like back in the day...

What a great idea for an app, and when it's working I love it. The problem is that it's super unreliable. Frequent force close or freeze issues - about twice a day, and caching a station for offline listening just doesn't work. Caching a custom playlist or an album works fine, but trying to listen to a cached station just does nothing. On the fence about whether or not I'm going to cancel my subscription.

rather than a cache station mode there needs to be an offline mode rather. updates over wifi connections only. the current release 3.2.2014 breaks a rather usable option i used to drive in airplane mode with an updated cached station but now they refuse to play at all with out 3g on. Update to .9 still broke goodbye asap

I love this app, I'm a premium user and have no problems. I listen for hours a day in my car. It does have issues where it can skip on its own when u have a bad internet connection but as soon as it comes back its fine. But obviously that's not the apps fault. Edit, yesterday it stopped working for no reason, 4g or wifi. THEN I updated still no good. Please fix soon, I love this app

5 stars before but now, I just installed the most recent update today and now my slacker radio doesn't work. I had a plus account before, meaning I paid the 3.99/ month and I absolutely loved it on my incredible 2. I used it all the time. Now it won't load, and if it does I have to login which I never needed to do before. I've tried logging in with my gmail, resetting, and recreating an account but everytime it says "error code -1" or "cannot connect to server." Please fix it I loved my slacker radio!! :'(

I used to use Pansora but it was so problematic that I switched to Slacker. Slacker worked perfectly until, against my better jugement, I allowed it to update. Now, every time I get an alert, Slacker goes silent and I am forced to close it. I hope this latest update fixed it. Grrrrr!

I would totally give this app 5 stars if I could just because its Slacker and Slacker is SOOO much better than Pandora in my opinion, but I just can't. On every android phone I've had (Attic, Atrix 2, Infuse 4G, & the Vivid 4G LTE) this app has always either crashed multiple times or just stopped playing a station randomly or even just play only the first ten secs of a song before skipping. Fix this and you'll definitely get 5 stars.

Get it! It's worth every cent. I'm using an unsupported phone (Galaxy S2) and it works great. I'm even using the "Best" Quality Sound setting and Track Peloading. Once, I thought I lost my cached albums after a refresh. I used their "Report a Problem" tool and they instantly provided me with the solution (fantastic user support).

I Just started using this radio tonight. It's the best one I've found. It lets me make playlists and it saves stations of MY kind of music. Fantastic selection of tunes to pick from too. I love Method Man and they have Method Man. It's real easy to make your own playlist. Stupid geico adds freeze up the app. I have to change the station, then go back to get it working again. Also occasionally freezes when opening. It will say loading on the main screen, and I would have to go into my app settings to stop running the program. Really sad, because when the app works, its so much better than Pandora.

Was considering subscribing to slacker because of the cached stations option but I am glad I waited! This app is so buggy! Music randomly stops and it will say I have no cached stations when I actually do! Please fix asap! **UPDATE**-After tinkering with the app for awhile, I figured out how to fix the issue of songs randomly stopping if they are in my cached list. I had to refresh the station and that somehow stopped it from cutting off in the middle of a song. Anyway, app still needs to be fixed for it to be a bit more smoother but I have now raised this rating from 2 to 3.

What is it with huge app developers and flawed product. If it stops working, what's the point. My radio used to work fine, now it fails between songs and freezes. Got offered a free month and it failed to update that too. Guess I'll just "shuffle" my own music. Wah wah.

At first I wasn't happy with slacker but u get 99% on demand music selection u can cache 10 stations faster than Pandora it's amazing keep up the Good work. As for the people that complain about can't removing the application stop crying and root ur phone.

I absolutely loved this app by far the most. the only problem is I upgraded to the next version and then it started freezing ALL THE TIME. I understand that you need to make a living, but it would be nice if the free version didn't have to be rebooted every dozen or so songs. Other than that, this is the best music app by far. The music collection is much more extensive than all the other radio apps and I really like that I can fully customize my experience down to fairly minute details. If you could fix the reboot issue I have it would easily be a five star app.

This app used to be rock solid but now freezes and hiccups all the time when I use it on my Android tablet. Even the cached content hiccups which tells me there is fly in the code somewhere when the app can't even play locally cached content smoothly. App works much better on my PC. Hope someone from Slacker reads this and does something to tighten up their app since it is really nice when it is woking.

used to constantly crash and get stuck until i found out you cant have this and pandora on your phone. I hoenstly like the music on slacker better so i deleted pandora. now with the last update it freezes, reboots my phone, crashes and wont stop the process upon exit. i have to go into running apps and stop it or it will just eat battery doing nothing. i may end up going back to pandora but really dont like the station setups. wish i could download an older working version. I now have Pandora, Jango and Slacker. I should not forget Tun-in Radio however, this is in a class by its own with live radio. Pandora still wins with the most selection of music. Jango has the least selection, yet, plays a unique subset of music. Slacker is the most advanced feature rich player, no issues with skips here. Just not the biggest selection and the video ads...WAY OVER THE TOP LAME! Slacker has a nice widget though. So each are useful to have in their own right.

I like the Facebook integration, but ever since the update the app is ~bad~. New intrusive pop-up ads cover the whole screen and freeze (and sometimes crash) the app until you physically close them out. On Samsung Instinct running Android 2.2.2 and LG Optimus Slider running Gingerbread.

I love building custom playlists and having all my favorite songs right at my fingertips. I have a premium account, and I think it OS definitely worth it. I did run into a few playback issues, which I believe have more to do with my phone than the app. Luckily, I received a fairly prompt response from customer service via email, and its working great. I'm unable to find a few artists and tracks, but I know this has more to do with licensing issues. I most certainly will recommend this app.

I am a big slacker fan. Now that i have the dinc2, i get the invasive pop up ads over the album art that i didnt on my old phone. That tiny little 'x' is really hard to use to close the ad. 90% of the time i get sent out to the webpage, or skip to next song- irritating to say the least. Before anyone jumps on the free and cheapskate, i dont mind the ads in between songs, nor the smaller ads, but those large ones suck! rather than a cache station mode there needs to be an offline mode rather. updates over wifi connections only. the current release 3.2.2014 breaks a rather usable option i used to drive in airplane mode with an updated cached station but now they refuse to play at all with out 3g on. Update to .9 still broke goodbye asap update as of the last build it still open so early what is more usable and cache content works

This used to be the ultimate, it left everything else in the dust. The options out-do every other service out there, but with every update the app becomes less and less stable. Now I can't even access the cached section and it won't cache anything. Uninstalled/reinstalled, same issue. Tested on 3 different phones. It breaks my heart, Slacker rules all, but the app is unusable lately.

So this came on the phone and I have never used it before so I thought I would try it. Wellllll, this sucks as I it keeps freezing up. I have been on two different channels and both times after about 3-4 songs it freezes.

Tried them all... Even with a few crashes here and there it still beats the pants off of any other streaming radio app. The premium service is worth every penny. I am never bored at work anymore, and rarely hear the same track twice. caching music is brilliant for long trips with limited signal. I have talked all my friends into slacker and they all love it! Long live slacker!!

I contacted slacker and they claimed no one has reported any issues. Please email them and bug them. They tell me the issue is because the program has to actively run online and so performance is signal dependant. They told me this is how it has always ran. I told them BS my blackberry want that way. They had me test my caching and to be able to use this function I had to put my phone on airplane mode to get flawless playback. They need to know this is pointless and to make playback "off line" an option

I used to love this app, but now it's constantly freezing and force closing. I usually have to open and restart it six or seven times before I get it working. Aside from the brittleness, it's fantastic, but that's a pretty glaring issue.

In the beginning, this was my favorite app. I didn't mind the ads and considered supporting them. Now, the streaming has progressively worse with each upgrade. I used to listen to 20 comedy tracks with commercials with no problem. Now, I hear 1, maybe 2 and pray that a commercial will work. Download but be prepared to be disappointed in the long run.

This is so much better than Pandora! Not only does it have better pre-made stations (great songs you forgot about) but it has awesome copy features that lets you copy a pre-made station but then remove any artists you don't like and add others...and most importantly you don't hear the same song over and over and you don't get a random country song on your alternative channel...unless, of course you added it in.

Was my favorite music app. I even pay for the no ads. Works perfectly on a BlackBerry of all things, but when I updated to an HTC One X, it freezes between almost every song and crashes randomly. If it's not updated soon, I'm going to cancel the account.

I prefer Slacker over Pandora simply because Slacker pushes my music data to my Facebook seamlessly and without problem. Slacker for the most part is carefree. Only thing I don't like is when you cache a station you can't ever listen to it without a data connection. So why even cache? Other than that its a suitable platform to rival the ever so popular Pandora weakness.

This us the only app on my phone that routinely crashes it. Every time I try to use it, it gets stuck on a "loading" message and I have to forcibly restart my phone to get out of the screen. This is on WiFi and with the cache cleared and the most recent update installed. My advice, avoid this app like the plague.
