One of our final meetings at CES last week was with Slacker Radio's VP of Marketing, Jonathan Sasse, who sat down in a Las Vegas lobby restaurant to tell us what his company has been up to lately. Slacker Radio is one of the many streaming radio offerings that have apps available on the App Store (Pandora, Rdio, and Spotify are a few other examples), and Sasse says that after a few years of building up the service with content and technology and making sure it can be accessed almost anywhere, his main goal these days is just telling people why they should choose this service over all the others. His first reason: Content. Sasse says Slacker Radio has more than ten times more music to play than Pandora does, which is a pretty impressive figure. Slacker's been working hard to make content deals with record labels for quite a while, Read More
Slacker Radio Adds On-Demand Access to 8 Million Songs
Calendar16 Tue, 17 May 2011 19:36:54 UTC +00:00
At long last, music streaming service Slacker Radio is out with a premium, on-demand service. That puts Slacker in direct competition with MOG, Rdio, Rhapsody and Spotify. Slacker Radio has been teasing an on-demand offering for a while, and Tuesday users finally have access to more than 8 million songs at $9.99 per month. The app, available on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch [iTunes link], Android and BlackBerry, will now let users search for specific songs and albums and add them to playlists (either via mobile or on the web). Users can also cache music and playlists for offline listening. So what makes Slacker different from all those other on-demand offerings? Says Slacker CEO Jim Cady: a focus on radio stations. “Radio is still the best discovery tool for the average consumer,” he says. Until today, Slacker’s biggest competition was Pandora. Both focused on creating stations around specific artists and songs, letting Read More
The Austin City Limits Music Festival is going on next week in Austin, TX (as is GDC Online, which I'll be covering for TUAW). The festival has teamed up with Slacker Internet Radio and Seed Labs to spread the word and share some of the music from the artists performing there. They've produced a free app to check out the lineup of artists at the show, as well as make your own schedule, see a map of the event, post your own pictures and stories directly from the show, and even use a virtual lighter if a performance moves you to do so. You're on your own trying to get them to play "Freebird," though. Slacker Radio is also tied in to the app -- you can listen to an Internet radio station called Austin City Limits Radio, playing tunes and providing insight exclusively from the artists at the festival. Slacker Radio, a web-based and mobile music streaming service, has just introduced a new subscription tier for on-demand music. What usually happens is Slacker generates a station for you based on a song or artist, which then tweaks upcoming songs based on what you like and what you don’t. The free version is restricted by ads and a limited number of skips, while the $3.99/month premium version bypasses those and includes offline caching for the mobile app. The new $9.99 Slacker Premium Radio service will not only provide those features of Radio Plus, but also let you play any specific song within their database of millions of tracks on demand, streaming over 3G or Wi-Fi on BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile or webOS. There are a lot of mobile music services out there, but Slacker tends to win out for me, mainly because I can get decent music for free just Read More
Music subscription services never quite struck gold with Internet users, but now that the smartphone is becoming the era’s standard listening device, a new gold rush is on. Established music services like Rhapsody, Pandora and Slacker continue to improve mobile service, but they are suddenly facing new mobile music competition. Depending on a person’s phone, budget and listening habits, the new services may be a better call. The services seem to be converging on the same target — namely, apps that let users hear personalized radio stations, build play lists and store songs for offline listening. No service has all of these features for all mobile platforms, but they are making progress. Rhapsody’s Premier service ($10 a month), for instance, is great for iPhone users, good for people with Android phones and useless on a BlackBerry until Rhapsody’s BlackBerry app arrives later this summer. Users can create play lists or listen Read More
More Music Apps Join The Background-Enabled Party

By Ben Harvell on June 30th, 2010 Slacker Radio and Spotify receive the iOS 4 treatment While Pandora got the top billing when Apple demoed iOS 4 multitasking, other music services are also updating their apps to support background play. Multitasking in iOS 4 allows compatible apps to run in the background while another app runs in the foreground. Apps in the background can continue to perform tasks such as play music streams. Slacker Inc has announced that its personal radio application, Slacker Radio, has been updated to support multitasking and is available now for free on the App Store. The currently Europe-only Spotify is also headed for background-centric adjustment with the company announcing on its blog that an update has been submitted to Apple. The blog post goes on to suggest that a “surprise” will also be included in the update to thank users for their patience. As well as Read More

The rush to update apps for iOS 4 is upon us, and for me one of the most important to become iOS 4 ready with support for backgrounding are the music streaming apps. And sure, there are lots to pick from these days, however I think most will agree that Slacker Radio and Pandora are two of the most popular. Well, in a little bit of good news for those that prefer to stream — both Slacker and Pandora have been updated and are iOS 4 ready. The Slacker update arrived yesterday evening with support for backgrounding. Plus the update is also noted as having “various improvements and enhancements.” The update for Pandora also arrived yesterday and included support for backgrounding as well as “other bug fixes and minor enhancements.” In short, you can now stream music while surfing the web or checking your email — and best of all — Read More

It’ll be the perfect thing to run on a new iPhone — and oh, yeah: TiPb’s giving away an iPhone 4 as well. If you want to win, download the Slacker Personal Radio app from iTunes, try it out, and then leave a reply in our and tell us what music you’re caching on your iPhone. Read More

Internet radio buffs who are worried about going over their allotted data amount now that AT&T has changed its tune may want to check out Slacker Radio v2.0.  The app is now able to cache your favorite stations on your device, allowing you to listen to your music even without a connection. “This is a significant milestone for us and Internet radio as an industry,” said Jonathan Sasse, senior vice president of marketing at Slacker. “iPod touch and iPad owners will find the new caching feature particularly liberating because they can now travel beyond Wi-Fi networks and still have an uninterrupted and unparalleled music experience.” Slacker Radio v2.0 gives Plus subscribers the ability to select specific stations to cache (over Wi-Fi would be the most logical option since this is a data intensive process) by simply tapping “Cache This Station” from any station page.  Once selected, the station will be placed Read More
Slacker today announced support for music file caching and offline playback on iPhone OS devices. With the added functionality, Slacker Radio Plus subscribers can download “up to thousands” of audio tracks from customized stations and later listen to the stored music without a wireless connection. Although new to iPhone devices, Slacker began to supported music caching on BlackBerry and Android smartphones earlier this year. The timing of Slacker’s news couldn’t be better for iPhone users in the U.S. Just yesterday, AT&T abolished unlimited smartphone plans for new contracts and replaced them with plans capped at 200 MB and 2 GB, although additional throughput can be purchased for an additional fee. With the new caching feature, Slacker subscribers that use iPhones or iPads no longer have to stream music over a capped mobile broadband connection. Instead, they can load up their device with music from Slacker while on a wireless home network or Read More
The Slacker Radio app has just been updated, which has brought the app up to version 2.0 and adds the ability to cache your stations. In order to cache, simply tap “Cache This Station” and then moving forward you will able to listen regardless of your connectivity situation. The one catch is that in order to cache you need to be a Slacker Radio Plus subscriber. The one nice extra perk here comes in the form of battery life — when playing cached music you should see an improvement as compared to streaming. Of course, there is a 14-day free trial available. That said, if you are going for the trial you may as well get ready to pay because trust me — its much nicer as a Radio Plus subscriber. A few perks in addition to caching; you can also skip an unlimited amount of tracks, not have any ads Read More

Slacker 2.0 for iPhone features offline station caching, as long as you have a Slacker Plus subscription. The latest update to the iPhone app for online radio service Slacker, which offers a combination of personalized radio based on particular artists and curated radio stations, just became available in the iTunes Marketplace. The main advantage of the update, announced a couple weeks ago, is offline station caching, which lets you listen to stations even when you don't have a wireless data connection. It's been available in the Android and BlackBerry versions of the Slacker app since February, and it's a welcome addition to the iPhone version. Caching is particularly useful if you spend lots of time out of the range of a wireless connection, like in a subway tunnel or on a plane. On the iPhone, cached stations will start with about 100 songs, but as you listen to those stations while Read More

Slacker Personal Radio for iPhone Now Available in Canada
Calendar16 Mon, 18 Jan 2010 20:37:16 UTC +00:00
By Rene Ritchie, Monday, Jan 18, 2010 | Slacker Personal Radio [Free - iTunes link] is now available in the Canadian App Store. While our friend’s at CrackBerry.com got to enjoy the news a little sooner, thanks to Apple’s currently speedier App approval process and iLounge‘s spot, TiPb didn’t have to wait as long as we feared either. As far as we know, this is the first streaming internet radio service available to Canadian iPhone users (blame our nightmarish licensing) and it includes some nice local content: Slacker also tells TiPb that the 2.0 version is coming soon, and will provide station caching for iPhone and iPod touch. Can’t. Wait. Note: While the app is free for the first 30 days, a $5/month Slacker Plus subscription turns off the ads, turns on unlimited skips, and otherwise makes the service much more enjoyable and functional thereafter. My 10 favorite iPhone apps of 2009
Calendar16 Mon, 14 Dec 2009 18:00:00 UTC +00:00
This year may have been a disaster economy-wise, but app-wise it was awesome. I mean, consider just a sampling of what 2009 brought us: a wealth of GPS apps (most of them quite good), some way-cool barcode-scanning apps, voice-morphing, auto-tuning (still not sure what that is), and, lest we forget, bobble-head politicians--(OK, maybe that wasn't so much awesome as weird). The Kindle app brings nearly all the e-book goodness of the real thing to your iPhone--and in color. With that in mind, I've rounded up the 10 apps that made my year more fun, more productive, and just plain better. I'm not calling these the "best" apps of 2009; they're merely my favorites. (And I'm not including games, as I think that category deserves a list of its own--stay tuned for that.) 1. Five iPhone apps that can save you money
Calendar16 Wed, 23 Sep 2009 14:58:00 UTC +00:00
Keep BetterDeal on hand at the grocery store to figure out which size offers the best deal. As I often tell people, it's not the price of the iPhone that bothers me--it's the monthly fees! (Grumble, grumble, AT&T, grumble.) Alas, while there's no way to get around that $70/month minimum, at least I can use my iPhone to save money on other things: gas, groceries, books, DVDs, and even energy. Let's take a look at five killer apps that can help you pocket extra cash. I know a lot of people are partial to AAA Discounts, which serves up deals near your location. Great app, but only if you're a triple-A member. I'm also a fan of the suggestion over at Wise Bread to use Pandora instead of buying music, though why limit yourself to one music-streaming app? Grab Last.fm and Slacker while you're at it. OK, you've got my picks. Read More
iPhoneWorld.ca: Slacker Radio: iPhone App Review

June 21, 2009 by David Kaufman     iPhone App Review: Slacker – Beyond AM, Beyond FM, Beyond XMReviewed by David KaufmanApp LinkPrice: Free Background Info Internet radio is a hot subject these days. Most people love the idea of services like Pandora and Last.fm willing to provide users with customized radio, free of charge. A relative newcomer to the field is Slacker Radio, which just recently launched its own iPhone application. Preliminary Summary Slacker is essentially a mix between the Last.fm and Pandora methods of music discovery. Lets be clear, it does not identify similar music with a “sound” algorithm and instead creates matches through related artists of the same time period. The program constantly provided music that I enjoyed provided that I imputed a song or artist that I wanted to hear more of. However, Slacker has another major advantage to many of the other services, professionally programmed stations. Read More

Radio applications are all over the place in the app store. Everywhere you look there is a new app stating it has the widest selection of radio stations to choose from. Then there are the applications such as Pandora, Imeem Mobile, and the new Slacker Radio app that will constantly play a selection of music based off a genre, artist or even song that you select. The Slacker Radio application is one of the few that pull this off right. The app has you make an account on slacker.com and then jumps right into streaming music to you. Simply putting the name of an artist or song as well as choosing a genre that interests you will give the app enough information to build a playlist. As is the case with other streaming radio apps, you are only allowed 6 skips per hour per station without paying a monthly subscription that Read More
Slacker Radio Competes with Pandora

05.21.09        App Score: 9/10    I used Slacker Radio for the first time today, and I was impressed. Slacker Radio is a free custom internet radio app developed by Slacker, Inc. that provides some extra perks that its main competitor, Pandora, does not. Slacker Radio offers the same basic features as Pandora. You type in the name of a band or artist, and Slacker Radio creates a custom radio station for you that streams songs from that artist and similar artists. Slacker Radio boasts a library with millions of songs from thousands of artists. One of my favorite indie bands, The Rescues, was even in the library. Like Pandora, you can purchase the music that you are listening to on Slacker Radio directly from iTunes, view album art, prevent your iPhone from sleeping and save songs you like in your favorites. Both apps stream smoothly on WiFi or Read More

1 Billion Apps Later - Here Are Some of Our Favorites
Calendar16 Fri, 24 Apr 2009 22:30:01 UTC +00:00
Today, Apple announced that its customers have now downloaded a whopping one billion applications from its App Store. Here at ReadWriteWeb, quite a few of us have iPhones, so we thought that this would be a good time to feature some of our favorite apps. We download and test a lot of iPhone apps, but here are the ones that have stood the test of time for us. The App Store is now home to over 35,000 applications, so this is obviously only a small selection of applications, but these are the apps that we don't hesitate to recommend to our friends. We couldn't get feedback from everybody on the RWW team (and our BlackBerry users weren't very forthcoming with suggestions either), but here are the recommendations from Richard MacManus (R), Marshall Kirkpatrick (M), Frederic Lardinois (F), and Phil Glockner (P). Slacker vs. SiriusXm, Pandora, Last.FM

Slacker vs. SiriusXm:
Words cannot express how awesome this app is
Slugbabe 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
First of all, whats better then free music? Nothing. In addition to Slacker offering you free music it also has pre-programed stations. Industry pros put their blood sweat and tears into creating the best stations for Slacker listeners giving us the flexibility to create our own stations or listen to a huge range of Slackers genre and seasonal stations (even some comedy). I love the "sneak peak" feature which lets you peak around the corner to the next song. And for only $4/month you get even more awesome features and no advertising. I can't rave about this app enough!
The First KILLER Radio App!!!

Not only does the Slacker app set the bar, but it changes things completely. Some things it does a lot better than Pandora / Last.FM
Best Free Music App

I played around with this app for about 45 minutes from the house to work and it holds the connection better
AMAZING!
Richyrocks 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I was liking Pandora radio but this one takes the cake! I decided to look for a radio app that had all of my favorite types of music(rock, hip hop ect.) and I didn't know I'd find a free one! I mean I was pretty doubtful at first but then I read these reviews and they did not lie! I deleted my pandoria radio right after I opened this application! This is the best free app radio I've seen so far :D
THIS IS THE ONE!!!! Great Music - Great Interface - Awesome Features!
Digital Czech 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've listened to a bunch of the other free music apps. But this is the one. It's got the programing that Last FM and Pandora does not have and the additional information like Artist Bios and Album Reviews that Pandora only wishes it has. It breaks out of the expected iPod like interface Pandora went with including a dynamic next album preview and skip feature. Really slick to just slide the album art over to skip a track. Hearting and Banning a track is consistent with the slacker.com functionality. Now I only wish it cached on the iphone like their Blackberry app. For now it's streaming only. I have WiFi at home so I use the Line In on the iPhone doc and use this to plug into my home stereo. It's the way music should be. Thank you Slacker!!!
The Best Radio Makes The Best App!
Ricky Goldschlager 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I couldn't be happier with this app. I have been a Slacker listener for a while now. I used to listen to Pandora but Slacker has WAY more music and a lot more features. I've only been using the Slacker App for a day, but so far it seems like everything I love about Slacker radio is part of the app. Tons of free music, slick interface, great sound quality and the ability to listen to all my custom stations or their pre-made stations.
Don't even Bother
meshebe 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Don't even bother with this app, just go download Pandora. It's free as well, and it'll let you skip as many songs as you want (unlike this app). Pandora also lets you rate songs and create a station based on a band you like, rather than going by genre as this app does.
H&R Block ads
Quiksilverz24 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Having to listen to 30 second commercials on where to get my taxes done in insane!! Pandora flips up an ad that you can get rid of. I'm sticking with Pandora.
Nice app SLACKER!!!

SiriusXM is in trouble!!!
Good, but....
JHawkFan123 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Good, but I'm going to stick with pandora for now. Slacker's UI on this app blows Pandora 's away, however Slacker has 2 major problems: 1) If I'm driving (which is when I use these apps the most) and I hear a song I like, I need the ability to bookmark that song so I can buy it later. I can't buy the song as I'm driving. Pandora makes it very simple to bookmark a song, however Slacker doesn't have his ability at all. 2) I usually don't want to listen to just one station at a time. Pandora has a quick mix option which randomly plays all of my stations. This is a must have. If slacker added these two things, this app would be the best Internet radio app in the app store. Please add both these things in your next update!
Move Over Pandora
BX35 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Best music app out there...works great over edge, and the interface is smooth..best app for 2009 by far!
All reason for satellite radio is gone
Ex-XM 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
Between this and the multitude of apps available on the iPhone for Internet Radio, there is no reason to pay $13 a month for watered down FM without commercials. If you dislike ads, and the low skip limit on the free service you can subscribe to slacker plus ($3.99 a month, or $47 a year) to get rid of all that. As well as unlimited requests. The killer app here is to make your own custom stations with artists and bands you want to hear, whereas you would have to pull teeth to get a song played on XM or Sirius, you can easily request songs, ban songs you don't like and favor songs you do. The web app also lets you ban artists as well as songs, something Slacker's own G2 portable does not allow. It is the killer app for the iPhone, and it should make SiriusXM very worried.
Great app! Better than Pandora.
magicjj 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Needs thumbnails for custom stations and the songs need to start playing where they left off when you open the app. If you close the app mid-song now it starts playing the next song when you open it back up. Other than that this is a great app. I love the Slacker service, much more than Pandora, and this app doesn't disappoint. Not only does it work seamlessly with the service, it's just darn pretty.
wow! this is better than their own portable player!!

Slacker is my new best friend (well, when it comes to music). I've been a big fan of their web player for about a year and now that I can get it on my iPhone - it's even better. The player lets you pick a genre of music, skip songs, see the next song on the playlist and you can mark songs as favorites (heart) or ban them from ever being heard again. I highly recommend the Slacker player, it's pretty cool and best of all, it's free with plenty of new, excellent music.
Great sound, choice, and discovery

Over edge and 3g, I'm getting the same amazing slacker service I am used to on the web and on my slacker portable device, (which I guess I don't need anymore). I have personal stations set up on the slacker website that showed up on the iPhone app as soon as I logged in. The app also gives you info about the artist and album, and it learns about your music preferences by letting you ban or love songs. Sound quality, even over edge, is really impressive and the app has yet to crash. This is a great pandora alternative with a lot of extra bells and whistles. Hey slacker, please add caching so this can be the perfect app!!!!!
On the right path

It's the first release so there are obviously going to be some features missing initially, but Slacker is on the right path. Definitely a must have if you prefer Slacker over the other offerings! Goodbyte repeats from Pandora \o/
Finally! Like Pandora, on crack!

Finally it's available. As a Slacker user for a few months now, I was eagerly awaiting this app. And they certainly didn't disappoint. Great interface, excellent library of tracks and I love the coverflow that shows you the album from which the next song that is to be played came from. I'm a Slacker Plus user and my personal stations came up as soon as I logged in. Great job!
Pandora is better but ...

Why can't someone develop an app that plays when you are viewing email or surfing? I like Slacker but am married to Pandora.

This is a fantastic time to be a music fan, and as long as the record company idiots and legislators don't royalty Internet radio to death, I can't think of a better time to be a music fan. Is that enough repetition for you?
Get Pandora

Tried this and thought it was great until all the commercials and the song doesn't even resume after you close the app, it just starts the next song... Sigh, Pandora is best still.

I've tested Pandora, Last.fm, imeem, AOL, Shoutcast, etc. and to get personalized music that will fit your desires, Slacker is the best available. It continually plays music I like to hear, without overplaying tracks, while making it easy to customize to your direct music/genre desires. It has been "stuck" on my iPhone's home page.
One of my most frequently used apps...

I take a bus for much of my 90 minute commute to and from work. When I get on, I just start up Slacker and stream away until I get to my destination. It has eliminated the need to decide what part of my music collection should be synced to my iPhone, since I can choose what I want to listen to on the spot. And it has also introduced me to other songs and artists that I normally wouldn't have heard, allowing me to expand my musical horizons. I've even found a use for it at work, streaming new age music in the background to drown out others' conversations. Compared to others (Pandora specifically) I think the sound quality of the music from Slacker is better. Slacker also provides more powerful station customization tools, and doesn't limit free streaming to 40 hours per month (I've read that Pandora recently did this; not an issue fir me since most of my listening these days is through Slacker). There is one drawback to Slacker, though... Whereas Pandora doesn't feature audible advertisements on its radio stations, Slacker does- at the rate of about one every 45-60 minutes, in my experience. (That's one possibly 30 second ad during that entire time.) I don't find the ads obnoxious or annoying; your tastes may vary. (If you do, Slacker has an ad-free premium service as well, but I haven't bothered with it since I'd rather have free service.) Overall, this is a great app. It's allowing me to drop my XM subscription (savings of ~$16/month) without really missing anything that I'd used it for in the past. (I'm driving cross country soon and will be streaming Slacker during most of the trip.) Having the ability to run it in the background would be a great addition to its features; I understand that this can already be done on some jail broken phones.
