• A bored kid needing silly entertaining? - Replay your voice at either low or high speed for kicks.
Smart recorder introduces many innovative features:
• Time based tags allow you to quickly jump back to important portions of a recording. Just tap the “Add tag” button during recording to add the tag. Just tap the tag during playback to jump to the tag.
• Take pictures while recording. The pictures are stamped with the time in the recording at which they were taken.
• If you turn the phone upside down to get better reception for the microphone, then screen will rotate.
• Auto pause suspends recording when there is no sound. Recording starts again when talking resumes—perfect for conference room meetings.
• Multi speed playback allows you to skim uninteresting conversations quickly.
• A forward arrow skips 30 seconds of the recording.
• A back button allows you to repeat the last 30 seconds of the recording.
• A slider allows you to quickly navigate to any part of a long recording.
• You can even tap on the recording time and enter a numeric time at which you want to playback from.
• Smart Recorder provides three methods to transfer sessions back to your computer. First, there is WiFi sync. Your iPhone becomes an HTTP server and you simply point your web browser to the address given by your phone and save the recordings (and page with your tags) using the browser. Second, Smart Recorder supports SyncDocs. If you download and install SyncDocs, then you can use it to save all the files related to your session. Third, you can upload the pictures to Box.net. If you have never used Box.net, Smart Recorder can set you up with a free account. This account will allow uploading of recordings of 25MB (or almost 5 minutes). If you upgrade your Box.net account, then you can upload recordings of up to 1GB or over three hours.
Smart recorder provides a rich set of system settings to control its behavior:
• There is a setting that controls the number of seconds the forward and back buttons move you if 30 seconds is not appropriate.
• The sampling rate can be set anywhere between 8000-44,100Hz. A lower sampling rate saves disk space while a higher rate gives better audio quality.
• You can set the noise (or quietness) threshold at which auto pause activates.
• There are many other settings as well. See the program’s help section for more details.
Note that the iPod Touch (2nd Generation) requires an external microphone.

This is really a fantastic application. As a database programmer I can tell you this application is very well conceived, designed and implemented. It's not easy to think of an application like this, let alone develop it.
There are so many valuable uses possible. For example, recording a work meeting and taking pictures of the white board so you don't have to take notes. Taking a picture of a place and recording a description to go with it. In my case, I'm studying a 1,200 page book on Oracle programming to get an advanced certification. It's both hard and boring stuff. So I study & highlight, then explain the highlighted parts in my own words into Smart Record, and attach pictures of the pages with diagrams. Having to explain it to Smart Record gives great benefit, then I listen to the recording when I'm driving or doing other things. Being able to listen at a faster speed allows me to get through the material faster.
I've tried a lot of these recorder apps, and this one's the best I've found and it's not even close.

Supports the iPod Touch with external mike, has a nice feature to auto record only when sound is present.
It Does things NO other recorder does!! Truly a Smart Recorder!

For me the Auto-Pause feature is worth at least 10 bucks. If you record for long hours with gaps of silence in your recording, this app will make your life soooo much easier to get to the relevant audio. On top of this the developer threw in some other really Nifty innovations like the tagging and photos, etc. I will admit that there are better audio interfaces in the recorder app world, BUT for innovation and functionality, nothing comes close. For .99c this deserves 10 stars.

I have iRecorder and paid more for it. SmartRecorder is MUCH better: controls work better, able to break up a single session into multiple segments each with its own tag, etc. Also allows you to access the recording on a pc via WiFi network. If you are looking for a great/cheap multipurpose voice recorder - this is it !!!

I've gotten about twelve new apps formy iPhone in the last few weeks and this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review. It's easy to use, comprehensive, records for a long time, 22 minutes is as long as I've gone so far...it doesn't say what the limit is...that I could find, so it could go longer.
it's so easy to keep track of things... For instance.. If I put something away somewhere ... I quickly make a recording reminding myself where I put it... and tag it. (yes, I'm a little bit of a scatter brain... But I'm such a busy lady!!)
I can keep track of what I eat or exercise times and enter into calorie counter when I have more time.
Make my Grocery list, and so much more!!
make a running list of what I buy n paid for it at garage sales...
The only improvement I could want is to be able to hook up to my computer and have everything print out that I ( or a lecturer) at school said.
Well worth the money!

Has easy interface but if you still need help, there's a help button with easy to search & find topics!
I also love the AutoPause button.. I have never seen it in any other app! Basically.. No no I won't reveal it! Get this if youre looking for a recorder!!
Oh and wifi syncing is a plus! Plus send to email & more!

Practical and easy recording

This is a killer app. - Fast memos, meetings and class lectures easely accessible! Email and wi-fi features makes it superior. Tags feature while recording gets you to what you need to hear fast! (Just like highlighted sections on documents.) Exporting directly to Garage Band for podcasting and sound editing will be the logical next step to bring back your recordings to the iPod/iPhone/iTunes libraries!

I've never seen a better recording app than this. Great UI - a lot of useful features hidden under the simple screen and the tag option is a great idea!!! Everything a user could ever wanted for a recording app for the iPhone is in here. I think this is a recording app at its best as far as iPhone is concerned. Oh and it's free too.
