It was back in October of 2010 that Sega first released Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I [$3.99 / $4.99 (HD)], a direct sequel to the original 16-bit Sonic trilogy on Genesis and the much ballyhooed return to its classic 2D roots after more than a decade of mostly mediocre Sonic games. While we did enjoy Episode I in our review, I don’t think it exactly lived up to the expectations set by the rabid Sonic fan base (could anything, though?). In short, Sonic 4 Episode I brought modern visuals, great level designs, and a Sonic experience that was decidedly better than the majority of recent entries in the series. However, it didn’t quite feel like the Sonic games of old. Sonic’s movement in-game felt both slippery and sluggish, and it seemed much too easy to lose momentum and speed while playing, which isn’t a good thing for a character that Read More

Ok, so the past 16 months have been sort of a weird schedule of releases for our blue pal Sonic (isn't it always though?). First, the long-awaited franchise reboot that took Sonic back to his 2D Genesis-era roots came in the form of [$3.99/HD] which hit iOS in October of 2010. Then for the next year or so, it was like Sonic 4 didn't even exist as Sega pumped out Sonic Generations on a bunch of platforms and brought the astoundingly excellent port of [$4.99] to iOS and elsewhere. That's all well and good, but come on Sega, don't start a thought and not finish it. Where was the rest of Sonic 4? I guess it takes time to create a modern sequel to a 16 year old Genesis title, but Sega finally did announce Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2 with a quick teaser trailer back in December. The game's release date Read More

The 50 Best iOS Games of 2011: #50-1
Calendar16 Mon, 02 Jan 2012 22:18:44 UTC +00:00
In case you've been busy spending the holidays with friends and family, or just cross-country skiing to the North Pole, here's our recap of last week's epic, five-part series on the 50 best iOS games of 2011. How many do you own? #50: Temple Run In 2011, independent developers Imangi Studios had their biggest hit yet: The endless running game Temple Run. A cross between Canabalt and Raiders of the Lost Ark, in Temple Run you have to make split-second decisions and quick button presses to try to survive. The combinations of simple swipes and tilt controls, plus Temple Run's freemium pricing and stylish 3D graphics, made it one of the year's best high-score survival games. Our Bottom Line: Now is your chance to be Indiana Jones. #49: Tapper World Tour After nearly 30 years, the Tapper license awoke from a drunken stupor to revel in the App Store. Tapper World Read More
Daily iPad App: Sonic CD
Calendar16 Wed, 28 Dec 2011 01:30:00 UTC +00:00
Honestly, I can't really profess to be that big a Sonic fan. I like and have played most of the 2D iterations of Sega's headline platformer series on the Genesis, the Game Gear, and most recently, iOS. But I'm not a superfan by any means, and if I've ever played Sonic CD before, I don't remember. I certainly never owned it (though I do remember renting a Sega CD with a friend and playing Night Trap and Sewer Shark over a few weekends). All that said, Sonic CD, release just recently as a universal app for iOS, seems to me to be an exceptionally faithful port of what I do remember about Sonic, offering up colorful graphics, strong controls (performed with a virtual pad and jump button, and all of the standard complaints that come with virtual controls), and a great Sonic soundtrack. I do know that Sonic CD is heralded Read More
Favorite Fifty: 148Apps Best Games of 2011: 16 – 25
Calendar16 Mon, 26 Dec 2011 14:04:13 UTC +00:00
By Carter Dotson on December 26th, 2011 As 2011 winds down to a close, 148Apps takes a look back at some of the finest games released this past year. In what was another fantastic year in the world of iOS apps & games, we are here to bring you the fifty titles that we, the staff of 148Apps, thought were the best of the year. Here are the gaming titles 16 – 25 in our Best Games of 2011: : Zach Gage’s second iOS release is another smash, as SpellTower proved to be a fun take on the ever-popular word game genre. It comes with some special restrictions to force more creative word usage, and the requirement to make words out of nearby tiles, managing the tile stack as well as trying to form words causes the game to have a deeper dynamic than many word games have. $1.99 Released: 2011-11-17 Read More

Thank you Christian Whitehead and Sega! This is what many fans wished for!
Exceed88 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1
First, hats off to Christian Whitehead. Thank you so much for developing an engine and helping Sega realize the excellence of their original gems! Sonic CD is the least ported and most underplayed of all the classic Sonics and today you will change that by bringing it everywhere in this digital distribution generation! That's an achievement for the connection between fans and game companies. The port is perfect it seems from my playing so far. The graphics don't look like they were fiddled with, they're preserved but function properly in the new iOS aspect ratios. You have BOTH soundtracks at your disposal, this might sound trivial to some modern fans but the original Sonic CD pushed sound department in 2D games of the early 90s with soundtracks that were classy for their genre and brimming with life. Both tracks are great and the debate between fans can be put to an end as they'll have both now! The game runs at 60 frames smooth. The special stages even look worlds different due to the engine refining, anyone who's played the original SCD can tell that the stages run much smoother and look cleaner now. The game also has 4 save slots, and the addition for you to choose to impliment a tweaked spin dash from the other 2D Sonics or play as Tails as well (who was in Sonic 2 first, not CD.)Overall thanks Christian Whitehead. I like to believe your concept engine work helped give Sega the push to acknowledge Sonic CD needed to be brought back and that your ideas and efforts would help bring that to fruition. Thank you Sega for not turning down the ideas of a devoted fan and getting this out the door at last!
Awesome!

Great controls, awesome visual update, addition of Tails, and American and Japanese soundtracks? Sega, you have outdone yourselves this time. You should be proud. This is the standard to which all iOS ports should be held!
Finally, a smart corporation!
Luis Naranjo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.1

It's Sonic CD with both US and Japanese soundtracks! It's takes me way back to when I was a kid playing this. Now, after completing the game, I can play as Tails! Two words: incredible port!
