Late last week Capcom surprised everybody by announcing an iOS port of their classic arcade fighter Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 [ $2.99 ]. In all honesty, I suspect this was a cleverly timed release to casually tie in with 'The Avengers' movie coming out next week, but whatever the motivation I’m not complaining. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is one of the most beloved fighting games in history, and prior to the downloadable rerelease on XBL and PSN in 2009 it could be kind of a difficult game to play unless you owned the Dreamcast or the somewhat rare PS2 or Xbox versions. With that said it’s fairly mind blowing then that today you can download the entire original game onto a device that fits snugly in your pocket (or to your iPad if you’d rather, since the game is Universal, though it’s extra snug trying to jam that in your pocket). In January Namco Bandai released an excellent iOS version of their classic 3D fighter SoulCalibur [ $11.99 ]. A a fan of SoulCalibur on Dreamcast more than a decade ago, the faithful iOS port was a great way to re-experience the game. The virtual controls worked well, the graphics were crisp and high-res, and the finely-tuned mechanics withstood the test of time. However, as good as iOS SoulCalibur was, it was strangely devoid of any kind of multiplayer, a key component for a fighting game. Over the weekend, Namco Bandai looked to rectify that omission by releasing a new update that adds Bluetooth multiplayer to SoulCalibur. The new versus mode works just as well as you’d expect it to, and squaring off against an opponent face-to-face is just as fun as it was back in the day. It really is crazy just how well SoulCalibur has aged after all these years, Read More

'SoulCalibur' Now Runs at 60fps on A5 Devices
Calendar16 Fri, 10 Feb 2012 13:00:07 UTC +00:00
Last month Namco Bandai treated us to an excellent iOS port of the original SoulCalibur [$14.99]. It was based off of the superior Dreamcast version (or more accurately, the high resolution XBLA remake) rather than the arcade version, and came equipped with just about everything that made it a classic back then, barring a couple of significant things. First was the baffling lack of any sort of multiplayer, as well as a few missing modes that had been in previous versions. The second big thing was the frame rate. See, one of the things that was so memorable about SoulCalibur on the Dreamcast was just how crazy smooth everything moved. The frame rate rocked a solid 60fps, and it elevated the visuals way beyond anything that was on current consoles, and rivaled much of what was popular in arcades at the time. In our review of SoulCalibur, I definitely found the game quite Read More

As a video platform, Vimeo has always played second fiddle to YouTube. Yet, Vimeo does attract a more professional grade of videographer and often the contents of Vimeo are much more polished than the much uploaded to YouTube from millions of would-be Internet stars. Vimeo finally has a new app for iOS and Android and it is everything you would expect from the platform in terms of quality video and performance. Users can view videos, manage their accounts and upload all from one app. The Android version of Vimeo requires 2.3 Gingerbread or above. Producteev (Free - iOS, Android) Talk about cross-platform. Producteev is a task manager available for Macs and Windows PCs, iOS and Android, IM and email. It is basically everywhere. Application Review: Soul Calibur

posted by Marcus Nguyen on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 12:30 pm.   It has stood the test of time and lives on. It is regarded as one of the best, all-time fighting games. It is timeless. This is Soulcalibur. 12 years ago, Namco developed and released the first installment of Soulcalibur as a sequel to Soul Edge to continue the long, ever-lasting story. Since then, the game has received quite a few ports to newer devices including Dreamcast and Xbox. However, it wasn’t until January that it has iOS seen its port. Soulcalibur allows players to relive, once again, the great aspects of the legendary fighting game.  Read on for the full review:  Soulcalibur is a 3D, arcade fighter. Offering 5 total modes of gameplay, it gives players multiple ways to warp into their nostalgic past: The gameplay becomes more strategic since character having his, or her, own strengths. Posted 02/01/2012 at 9:48am | by Andrew Hayward Considered one of the all-time great fighting games on consoles and in arcades, Soulcalibur makes a surprisingly stellar translation to a touchscreen interface, with virtual buttons that deftly issue sweeping sword strikes and kicks, and a stick that lets you move your fighter ably around the stage. Soulcalibur still leads the weapons-based fighting genre today (with this week's release of Soulcalibur V on consoles), and this late-90s flashback serves up all of the original fighters -- including the staff-slinging Kilik, as well as sword-wielding samurai, Mitsurugi. While the combat isn't quite as robust as in later entries, this is still a satisfying affair that works well on both iPhone and iPad. Plus, this decade-old classic looks better than ever thanks to the high-resolution bump, though the rough textures of a bygone era aren't entirely absent. Soulcalibur remains a fast, fluid, and thoroughly exciting Read More
SOULCALIBUR

SOULCALIBUR for iPhone and iPad is here from NamcoBandai Games, complete with all of the 19 original combatants. Gameplay modes for the iOS version of SoulCalibur are, arcade, time attack, survival, extra survival and practice; Museum and Exhibition modes are thrown in for those who like to watch. SoulCalibur (which was originally called Soul Edge) delivered us from 2D fighters like Mortal Kombat towards the end of the 90’s with the Sega Dreamcast port becoming highly regarded.   The graphics are very good here for an iOS game. If you insist on comparing it to the superior frame rate of the Dreamcast you will be disappointed. The platforms, caves and other fighting venues look good, and there is no noticeable problem in getting them to your eyes through the wonderful retina display of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. I look forward to trying SOULCALIBUR on an iPad 3. The controls Read More
You Can Now Pay $12 to Play SOULCALIBUR By Yourself
Calendar16 Fri, 20 Jan 2012 18:01:27 UTC +00:00
I have very fond memories of playing SOULCALIBUR on my first Xbox, but there’s really no way I’d part with $12 ($15 at full price) to re-live them on my iOS device. The first issue is my own: I’ve played a few fighting games on my iPhone now and am convinced that touch controls just can’t match real tactile buttons for accuracy, but that’s understandably subjective. The real sin here is really the lack of multiplayer. Fighting games often feature single player modes, but everybody knows that hitting other people using your joystick (yep) is really where it’s at. Releasing a fighting game without even local multiplayer is is like creating a photo editing app without any export options. Granted, the game description hints strongly that “additional modes” are coming, but they really should be here now. For this to fly, the game should start out a lot cheaper to reward Read More
Review: Namco SoulCalibur

Company: Namco Players: One Price: $15/$12 Compatible: iPod touch, iPhone, iPad Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Friday, January 20, 2012 Category: Games - iPad, iPhone + iPod Rating an early 2012 port of a mid 1998 arcade game isn't easy, particularly when the title in question was ambitious at the time but has been surpassed numerous times by subsequent releases. Namco's universal iOS release SoulCalibur ($15/$12, aka Soul Calibur) is that game -- the first of many sequels to Soul Edge, a breakthrough one-on-one fighter that broke from convention by giving its polygonal combatants weapons, and successfully created medieval backdrops in which they could battle. By looking, sounding, and playing roughly as well on Apple's latest devices as it did on Sega's Dreamcast console 13 years ago, the semi-3-D SoulCalibur manages to become the most advanced game of its kind in the App Store, though it's hard to miss the small bugs, high Read More

Well, get those thumbs ready, because Namco’s arcade/Dreamcast classic Soul Calibur has just been released for iOS. I enjoyed a long-standing fling with Soul Calibur in my younger days, mostly because it was the only fighting game I was ever good at. My skills seem to have dulled considerably over the intervening years, though the touch controls probably don’t help much. [iOS-Game] SoulCalibur (+ Video)
Calendar16 Thu, 19 Jan 2012 11:41:23 UTC +00:00

Great port! Needs multiplayer!
Travis Tameirao 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
The game was ported flawlessly in my opinion with well executed touch controls as well. However, I hope icade support is added, then this will really be a great fighter for the iPad. I have one major gripe, where is the multiplayer!!! At least local wifi, seriously this game was great for its multiplayer, add ASAP. For the price it should have been here from the get go.In my opinion save your money until multiplayer is released, otherwise it's hard to justify the $12-$13 price tag. Great port though!
The Soul Still Burns... Without multiplayer
Dapietri 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This game plays perfectly on an iPad. I've had no issue executing any combination with any of my preferred characters, and I am inclined to say that it plays better on an iPad screen than a dreamcast controller. I'd still rather play this on an iPad than any sequel on any console with any joystick. It's missing mission mode, as the XBLA port was, and multiplayer. This is a big omission, and my four stars will jump to five if it is added and executed well. Without it, Soul Calibur is a flawless technical port that is superb in nearly all other respects. Here's to hoping we get that added soon, eh Namco? Be sure to include the true random 8v8.
Impressive

Console quality gameplay on a phone. Controls are responsive & easy to use. Graphics & animation are nice & fluid. Good sound too. Great job Namco!
