I don’t know about you, but I’m always blown away whenever a game I used to play as a kid in the local arcade is accurately recreated on a mobile device. The latest to do that is Taito’s Space Invaders for the iPad. Now, don’t get this version of Space Invaders confused with Space Invaders Infinity, which is a more updated and modern version of Space Invaders. Space Invaders HD is more like the traditional Space Invaders that we’ve all grown up playing and was already released on the App Store as an iPhone game a couple of months ago. So what does the iPad version of the game offer that isn’t already available in its iPhone counterpart? Well, for one obvious thing, the game takes full advantage of the iPad’s screen. You can play a 1 player game, which takes up the entire iPad screen with the game taking the Read More
5 Awesome Arcade Games for the iPhone
Calendar16 Sun, 27 Jun 2010 05:05:24 UTC +00:00
Thanks to the modern console, arcade games will never hold as large a place in gaming as they did in the 1970s and 1980s. But there is some good news for reto-gaming fans, as many arcade classics are now available in the App Store just waiting for you to download. Here are five awesome games that have made the leap from coin-operated arcade machine to your iPhone’s screen. So limber up your thumbs and let us know your favorites in the comments below. The Atari classic arcade game Pong, is undoubtedly the seminal title in the modern computer game industry. While it might be hard to believe now, back in the mid-70s, a home Pong console was the modern-day equivalent of having a PS3 hooked up to your television. Being the only game on the market at the time made it an obvious success, but the game itself is surprisingly addictive. Read More
25 iPhone Games That Should Rock on the iPad
Calendar16 Thu, 04 Feb 2010 22:53:02 UTC +00:00
Posted 02/04/2010 at 2:53pm | by Andrew Hayward Apple's iPad announcement event didn't put an especially large focus on the gaming possibilities of the new device, but what was shown demonstrated how easily developers can modify current iPhone and iPod touch apps with just a brief time investment. We've already seen how updated versions of N.O.V.A. and Need for Speed: Shift will take advantage of the iPad, but it got us thinking -- how might some of the other best-selling or beloved iPhone games use the iPad's updated features to enhance the existing experience? Here's our list of 25 games we'd love to see enhanced for the iPad, but if you have your own dream app upgrade in mind, be sure to let us know in the comments! We love swapping Bejeweled 2's shimmering gems on our Macs, but we also dig the tactile feeling of actually flipping the gems in Read More
There are few iPhone games that I will immediately buy. Most of the ones I do, however, are the classic games I played as a teenager. The iPhone/iPod touch is more than powerful enough to handle these games and it seems that there are many people like me who are keen to experience these classics again. So, here’s a roundup of modern ports of classic games. Only official ports of classic games are detailed here — clones and the like do exist but I had to draw a line in the sand. I’ve also included links to Wikipedia for those interested in the history of the games. The Video Arcade is where mainstream gaming began, and there are plenty of original ports from this era to re-live your youth shoving coins into cabinets. I’d still like to see BubbleBobble make an appearance here to completely satisfy my urges. Release Year: 1978Original Read More
Space Invaders

Space Invaders has been around longer than dirt, at least to most of us. Sorry to all of our older viewers. Almost every new console or gadget released has seen a rendition of this classic game, and you'd have to be a fool to think it wouldn't be headed its way to Apple's popular mobile devices. Taito has now officially created a version of their genre-defining arcade game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Everything that made this game so great has been included, and almost nothing has been changed. While this can be seen as a good thing, let me dive into why this game may fall short in the long run. The game utilizes the digital arcade interface with a joystick and button on the screen. Great in theory, but I found it just took too much space up on the screen and left almost no viewing area. FINALLY! THE BEST RETRO GAME - BUT NOT WITH A RETRO PRICE!
Daisy Jane (DJ) 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Its TRUE - This IS Space Invaders and for die hard retro gamers that played this in the late 70's like myself, its great! But like Namco and others, PLEASE lower the price!
faithful port, nicely done
braveboat 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
UPDATED REVIEW: 2/25/08 there IS an option to maximize gameplay screen (minimize console view); my original review was premature. added 1 star. slightly lower price would earn 5-stars, for sure! very true to the original, but the "console view" should me minimized (or made an option) b/c it eats up too much screen space. i like the different control options; prefer the accelerometer controls myself. kinda spendy for space invaders... $2.99 seems about right to me. keep 'em coming, Taito!
Great game

Price should be $1 not $5 space out is space invaders and is the same game for 99 cents. But I like this better
Now invading your local App Store...
lpotr4 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Being a retro game fanatic, I was really thrilled to see the original Space Invaders finally ported for the iPhone - it plays exactly as it should! Again, the price will be perceived a bit high for a retro game, but if that's what it takes to get more top tier games onto the iPhone I'll support it.
Welcome TAITO

Color options are a nice touch. I can pick from the machine that was in the pizza shop, skate rink or arcade! Waiting for the next offering.
The game that took all my allowance on the weekend at the arcade.
svt512 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Finally, a official Space Invaders for the Ipod. Very well done, dig the development information in the game. Taito - Good Job!, bring out more arcade classics!!!! Bring on Jungle Hunt, Rastan, Qix......
Classic
eXWorld.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
True to the original. This is a must have for any classic arcade game enthusiast. Thanx!
Authentic & Fun!
Mystery Base 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Very faithful rendition of the classic coin-op. Visually appealing with excellent sound. Simple controls translate well to the iPhone interface. As addictive as ever! The 'rainbow' and 'wall of death' tricks are included. Choose B&W, cellophane or color video--play it the way you remember! Thank you, Taito! 20 games and it has 'paid' for itself.
Awsome!
JSWSN 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Thank you for bringing this retro back from the past great ones. Very nice job!
Great App!
electronico1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great game but the virtual joystick and fire button at the bottom should be removed in order to allow the game area to have a bigger display. Hopefully this will be done in a coming update.

Satisfied.
farrachka 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
Nice version of a classic game, but a landscape mode would make gameplay much easier. Buttons at the bottom take up too much space.
Super true to original
Detroitquattro 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
First heard about this on AppSmile.com they give away Premium Apps for free every week - so cool. Annnnnnyway, Taito owns the rights to this game so it is exactly like the 1978 game we all love. If you're a fan get it now!
Great
O.A.R. fan 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Addictive and just overall a good app
eye strain
transit-byzantium 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Controls too large. Aliens too small, even at largest setting. Strains the human eye.
No go classic
Lunar landerz 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Forget it. I've been a gamer since pong and plugged many quarters into the original space invaders. Again. Controls too large screen to small. Drag w finger and tap to fire would have made better gameplay. They were going for old school feel w the atari like joystick and fire button but that would be better left to the user to toggle on or off with mode for true drag and tap to fire. Too much going on for such a small screen, and, take a cue from atari with missile command, they went with horizontal screen, that would allow for larger viewing area for your aging user core, lol, were in our 40s and 50s for Hecks sake, and years of video games has been hard on our eyes, take it easy on us! Lol.
Brings back memories.
PapaBear27 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
5 stars for being true to the original. I felt like a kid in the arcade again. Yes the controls are an adjustment, but I'm happy enough just getting to play Space Invaders again.
Lame Try
randallsmusic.com 2.0 stars Version: 1.0
Lousy controls, too small, too expensive.
Can't go wrong with a classic!
Floyd Patterson 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Space Invaders might not be so hip with this generation's gamers, but it's still an important part of gaming history, and this version is a great port of the arcade classic with four different versions to choose from.
Great Classic!!!
randallsmusic.com 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.2
I like how you can adjust the screen to fit larger. Wish could do landscape in original version. Exact replica of the game that started the pinball machines to go out and Defender in!! Pivotal game in history for my generation. I stiol play 2D classics most of the time. It's not trying to be virtual reality but obviously helps eye/hand coordination and prepared a whole generation of Tron players to have no problem dropping drone unmanned bombs on foreigners' children.
