If you’re an old gamer, you may remember owning an Amiga or even an Atari ST. You may also remember playing a fictional sports game titled, Speedball 2 by the Bitmap Brothers. It turns out that that very exact game, apart from the few tweaks was released on the app store as a universal app in the form of, Speedball 2: Evolution. I can vividly remember my Amiga days. Bitmap Brothers was super-respectable name in the gaming business. Pretty much all of their games were rock solid, providing tons of hours of entertainment for the truly yours. Speedball 2 was on that list too, and boy am I glad to see it being re-done for the iPhone (with hopes it will hit the Android Market as well). I’ll explain the basics here – we’re talking about a sports game where you literally need to punch the other player to take the ball and score a goal. It may sounds stupid and dull, but it really isn’t — especially if you play against other human being which is also possible in the iPhone version. Back in October we reported that the classic Bitmap Brothers Atari ST / Amiga / DOS Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe would be making its way to iOS in the form of Speedball 2: Evolution. Moments ago, the game went live in the App Store as a Universal application for both iPhone and iPad [link] and we've taken a close look over the past few days. Speedball 2 is a futuristic cybersport that's something of a mix between handball and ice hockey. The game takes place between two opposing teams -- nine players to a team -- in an enclosed, metal arena littered with power-ups and arrayed in warp portals and various score-enhancing mechanisms. Being huge fans of retro games, but especially those which originated on the Amiga, we’ve been particularly looking forward to Speedball 2 Evolution, the iOS remake of the exciting, violent sports games Speedball/Speedball 2.  The news that the Bitmap Brothers were actively involved with this mobile version made us want it even more. However, despite a 24th February release date being specified, it never arrived, and was revealed to have been delayed until the 25th, but it didn’t appear then either.  Fast forward until today, the 27th February, and Speedball 2 Evolution is at last available in the App Store.
